"This little cafe is a calm, bookish oasis within the bustling, narrow streets of Cartagena’s Old Town. Duck inside, and you’ll find walls of floor-to-ceiling books just waiting to be plucked from the shelves.
Anyone can pop into the sunshine-yellow shop and hunker down with a steaming cup of Colombian coffee while flipping through the pages of hundreds of different titles. The cozy cafe has earned itself a reputation as one of the best bookstores in the city.
Opened in 2002, Ábaco is a quiet spot, a place where tired tourists or laid-back locals can come to take a break from the city crowds. As it’s right in the heart of the city that inspired many of Gabriel García Márquez’s most famous works, you can expect to find his titles spread throughout the space. But of course, there are books from other local and international authors there as well." - ATLAS_OBSCURA
"In a city that inspired the most famous works by the winner of a Nobel Prize in literature, you'd be forgiven for expecting a place to buy novels on every corner. Cartagena's book offerings are somewhat slim, but the best by far is Ábaco, a bookstore and café in the heart of the old part of the city. It draws local literati, but even if you don't speak Spanish, you'll find something here; there's a small gift section, and, of course, Colombian coffee."

A shockingly good bookstore in the middle of the Old Town’s tiresome tourist traps. Yes, they have Stephen King and thrillers and so forth, but also a better range of university press books and critical texts on current / recent Colombian history and politics than I found in Bogotá’s bookstores. They also sell field guides for ecotourists and treatises on Cartagena’s fortifications. There’s even a cafe built in. Hats off to you guys, the world needs quality independent bookstores more than ever!

I started my Friday morning looking for a change of pace and found this charming bookstore–coffee shop tucked away in the heart of Cartagena. The moment you walk in, you’re surrounded by towering stacks of books that give the space a warm, old-world feel. Tucked in the back is a cozy coffee bar with a surprisingly strong offering — including a siphon setup and pour-over options for the coffee aficionados.
I went for a simple macchiato and a chocolate croissant, and both hit the spot. The staff speaks great English and is helpful in guiding you through their curated book and gift selection. If you stop by, I recommend grabbing a spot on the small front patio — seating is limited but it’s a great place to soak in the atmosphere.
I’m planning to come back Saturday to explore more of their coffee options. All in all, a peaceful, welcoming spot worth visiting.

Delicious coffee in a quint old bookshop setting. The lady at the till was lovely. The barista was not very friendly but he was probably having a bad day. Other than that, highly recommended.

Honestly, a wonderful, if not the best library I have seen in Latin America so far.
Amazing book selection, amazing atmosphere, amazing prices even!
The coffeeshop is also good.
The staff is amazing, they need a raise, every one of them was kind, helpful and really made the experience so much better.
Totally recommend if you like books or not, come, take a look, buy some coffee!

Abaco Cafe and Books was the nicest place for us to go for a cup of coffee out of all places in Cartagena. Good coffee, delicious palo de keso, nice music, good books. Even the great Mircea Cărtărescu was exposed there. Recommend!!

Amazing place, I just wish I could’ve sat to enjoy my drink. All tables were taken by people reading or whatever but people actually buying food couldn’t sit down. Maybe reserve a few tables exclusively to people trying to eat/drink.

It’s one of the coolest coffee shop in Cartagena, if you’re interested to stop by, having a coffee after long walking in the old town. stop here grab your coffee, looking at the books. It’s a very cool place. It’s in the middle of the city not very far from the sightseeing.
