Not much has changed at the new Wayfare, and that’s a good thing - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Whether you were a regular at the original Wayfare Tavern or have no idea who Tyler Florence is, all you need to know is this iteration of Wayfare Tavern is still one of the best restaurants in the Financial District. At the new location, the American spot has kept its slightly retro, upscale look with wood beams the color of barely cooked caramel, maroon booths, and full-wall nautical murals. There are also a few literal holdovers from its former space, like the taxidermy deer heads. The menu sticks to the dishes that were essential to the Wayfare experience. Deviled eggs, fried chicken, the Tavern Burger, and, of course, the free popovers to start the meal are still here and solid. They all make for a reliable, low-stress group dinner or a casual power lunch, especially because Wayfare's tables don’t require much advanced planning and the restaurant is open all day on weekends (a rarity in the neighborhood). How to get into Wayfare Tavern Weekdays are typically easy for walk-ins, but try to plan at least a day ahead for weekend lunch or dinner. And for those looking to host an event or a private group gathering, this newer version of Wayfare Tavern has a stellar second-floor space for it. RESERVE A TABLE WITH RESERVE A TABLE Food Rundown Popovers Thankfully, Wayfare Tavern has kept their complimentary popovers, which are still brought over warm, so that first tear releases steam like a big breath on a cold day. Slather on the butter and savor it, as there’s a one-popover-per-diner limit. photo credit: Patrick Wong Petaluma Farms Deviled Eggs Served ice-cold with a silky mound of egg yolk. We love how there’s a slight sweetness from the Swedish mustard aioli, balanced out by the pops of trout roe. photo credit: Patrick Wong Mary’s Organic Fried Chicken While there are some dry bites, this is still a good entree. The crust is light and crisp, and the meat tastes like it was getting rosemary and garlic infusions right before it was fried. Each order comes with five sizable pieces, so you’ll likely have leftovers. If you want a smaller serving, get a side of it with one of the salads. photo credit: Patrick Wong The Tavern Burger There’s nothing wrong with this burger—the patty is cooked perfectly to your liking, the bacon is crispy, and we love the little bit of sweetness that comes from the onion relish. But in a city with fantastic burgers, this one doesn’t stand out. If you want a good burger, though, by all means. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong
