Jo'burg's Watering Holes

Kitchener's Carvery Bar
Bar · Johannesburg
"Have A Drink & Get Your Party On At One Of The Oldest Bars in Jozi On this rainy afternoon that I visited, Kitchener's had the DJ on the decks mixing up a storm inside the venue, with patrons being able to browse the goods with their drinks in hand all the while being able to do a little boogie! Whether it's on the weekend or during the week, Kitchener's does get very full, but is always good fun! On the weekend's the bar transforms into a bustling, bar/market with jewellery, vintage books, clothes and more on sale. A cool fact about Kitchener's: It has the honour of being the second oldest bar in Johannesburg . Check out their full list of events on their Facebook page"

"Saturday foodie market in Braamfontein This semi-outdoor market on Juta Street in Joburg's Braamfontein neighbourhood is fun fun fun. Eat oysters from Namibia, drink craft beer from South Africa, and devour paella, gelato, cheeses, chocolate...a food lover's paradise! Open on Saturdays."
Foundry
Permanently Closed
"At Foundry, guests can throw back craft beers with quirky names like the Naked Mexican, Franky Four Fingers, Van Hunks, and Jack Black. Housed in a great part of Johannesburg called Parktown North, the gastropub is a favorite of locals in the know, meaning that if you want to come on a Friday, you’d best make a reservation by Wednesday morning. In addition to beer, there’s a wide range of food, from mussels, barbecue ribs, and spit-roasted chicken to burgers, mushroom ravioli, and wood-fired pizzas. Add to that a warm, lively ambience and you have the makings of a great night out with friends."
The Sands lifestyle Centre
Dance club
"Have a Classy Drink & Party the Night Away This Jameson-themed bar can be found in the Sands entertainment venue, where glamorous models and stylish gents gather to party. Once you've ordered your poison, you can bump and grind to the sounds of top local and international DJs on the adjacent dance floor! Located in Sandton, this awesome venue is best in summer with it's Absolut Vodka bottle– shaped swimming pool and outdoor bar section and pool deck."
"Beers at the Baron in Bedford The Baron in Bedforview is always packed, even on a Monday night. Get there early and have a good meal before working your way to the bar. You'll find a good range of drinks to wet your whistle. I'm not usually a fan of franchise bars/restaurants, but this particular place is quite a lot of fun."
The Griffin — Gastropub

"The Tale of The Dragon, The Gorilla & Some Banana Bread A couple of my mates and I decided to visit The Griffin gastropub one night for a bit of a chilled evening after having had a few days of raucous fun. This was the perfect place to do it, with it's laid back vibe and great selection of craft beers on offer, we had found a winner! Scouring the menu, there's almost too many craft beers to choose from, but if beer isn't your thing, there is also craft whiskies... which I will definitely test out on my next visit as this time round I was just too full to fit in anything else. My personal favourite out of all the beers we'd tasted was the Banana Bread Beer, but other notable mentions included the Dragon Fiery Ginger (ginger beer) and the Bone Crusher with hints of orange which become richer when paired with the right food."
"Chillout in the Library Bar Sit down in the comfy leather couches and read up on the local news while you sip on a perfect whisky or hustle up a game of pool and sink a cold beer while keeping your cool, either way you'll love the Library Bar at the Melrose Arch hotel for it's classy, old school opulence and it's cosy atmosphere. Hot Summer evenings can be enjoyed on the verandah with cocktails and friends while cooler evenings can be spent cosying up on the couches at the fire side with a hot cup of cocoa. A well thought out bar food menu, is also available if you're feeling a little hungry."
San Deck, Bar & Restaurant
Bar & grill
"Sundowners on the Deck at the Sandton Sun Enjoy a sundowner outside on the San Deck of the Sandton Sun Hotel, which offers great views and a good menu with some light snacks. Once you're done, find your way inside to the hotel's restaurant before heading back up to your spacious hotel room with ample amenities."
Great Dane
Permanently Closed
"Fun Times at the Great Dane One of the first things you'll first notice about the Great Dane pub in Braamfontein is the floor. It's made completely out of 5 cent pieces, which gives it a very awesome copper colour! Located right next door to the other hip and happening bar, Kitchener's and open all week long, the pub also serves some good grub. Be sure to get in earlier as the place does get packed even with an over flow area in the form of a cosy courtyard in the back. There are some pretty cool parties each weekend so be sure to check up on the Facebook page for relevant details like the secret password to get in the front door!"
Stella E Luna
Permanently Closed
"Dine Under The Stars in Parkhurst Stella e Luna is a recent addition to the bustling 4th Avenue strip in Parkhurst. After touring the city for a bit, my friend and I decided to stop in at this restaurant as it seemed interesting and we wanted to see what it was all about. The decor and ambiance make this place feel quite romantic (thanks to the stars on the roof and the mood of the lighting) and would probably be good as a first date kinda spot. To our surprise, as much as it is a restaurant with great ambiance, it has some pretty awesome cocktails on the menu. Fit for a classy bar even... so much so, that if you just wanted to meet your friends for a drink and a few snacks, you could easily do so here. If you're too busy for a sit down meal, then the dedicated take away section offering just pizzas is where you want to be. The restaurant's speciality is pizzas and pastas, with some very intriguing pizza combinations on offer, so definitely make a move for that, but their other meal options are quite interesting too!"
