Zabar’s is the quintessential Upper West Side gourmet emporium, where you can dive into a sea of smoked fish, delectable bagels, and diverse kitchen goods while mingling with local food lovers.
"This gourmet deli and grocer has been in the same location for over 85 years. They sell high-quality cheese, meats, and hundreds of packages of chocolate babka daily, but the real star of Zabar’s is their smoked fish. Eat a bagel with whitefish or nova from their takeout and cafe area on the corner of 80th and Broadway." - bryan kim, willa moore, neha talreja, hannah albertine, will hartman
"Zabar's is definitely a neighborhood if not NYC institution. It's a foodie destination housing some of the best smoked fish, prepared foods, coffee's and more. On any given day, rub shoulders with UWS locals buying gourmet breads, bagels, cheeses and prepared foods. Some of my favorite things to get there are the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee by the pound and their delicious homemade soups. For an added bonus, check out the upstairs area for a massive selection of kitchen goods at great prices! This is definitely worth a trip to the UWS on it's own." - Ken Pao
"Classics are classics for a reason, and that’s why we love the sufganiyot at Zabar’s. It’s unfussy, delicious, and you won’t have to plan your entire week around picking up a box of these. Put on your best Mrs. Maisel cosplay, schlep to the Upper West Side (if you don’t already live there) and make an event out of it. Pick up some smoked fish and babka while you’re at it. "It’s a heck of a lot easier to exude cool with a hoodless crewneck from Zabar’s than with an ill-fitting Reformation dress." - Linni Kral
"Do you hate brunch? If so, head to Zabar’s. The no-frills fluorescent-lit cafe attached to the longstanding appetizing store is the perfect place for a quick, antisocial meal. Pick up a bagel sandwich and a couple of latkes, then head out front and eat at one of the standing tables while you do a crossword and glare at all the people walking by. " - bryan kim
