"In a quiet part of the city, Yanaka Ginza is a retro shotengai shopping arcade. Before shopping malls and supermarkets, there were shotengai filled with mom-and-pop shops selling seafood, tofu, meat, and vegetables. It’s a good place to try a number of local dishes: menchi-katsu (ground meat that is breaded and deep-fried), chestnut sweets, ikayaki grilled squid, and sweet bean paste–filled cakes in the shape of cats. A short walk from Nippori Station, Yanaka Ginza offers a glimpse of how the Japanese used to shop and some still do."

This place is just claming and quaint... you have to explore this little town if you come to Japan. The snacks and souvenirs are cheaper than those touristy places. They have temples that hold history - the 47 samurai, the temple doors with bullet holes from the 1800s. Don't worry, there are English signage to explain the stories.

Didnt really enjoy the place as much as we thought we would and we went on a Saturday, a weekend. Prob cos it was winter when we went. No sightings of cats in the cemetery or at the street alley in a place known to be a 'cat city'. We didn't stay long, maybe less than 3 hours, as there was nothing attractive. Even the street food was so so. Nothing to hype abt.

Cat-themed shopping district. Enjoyed strolling around the pleasant streets, with a myriad of little shops. Nice to see mostly Japanese there instead of tourists. Not as crowded as the touristy Ameyoko, Tsukiji or Akasuka, all these which I avoided this time round. Managed to get most of my souvenirs at Yanaka with reasonable prices. If you are hoping to see cats roaming around you will be disappointed.

After the overly busy and seedy markets of Ueno, Yanaka Ginza is a refreshing journey with interesting shops and tasty food. The older style building and less people make for a rewarding journey. Close to a few train stations. We had a few snacks and bought small things from about 4 different shops while walking along this street.

We were here on September 15, a Sunday. Very busy with lots of people. Most restaurants are very small and the waiting time can be up to 2 hours, especially for the popular ones. Personally I don't find it anything special. As we were staying in Ebina, it was definitely not worth the time and effort to come here. But if you are staying nearby and have nothing else to do, why not? It's an okay place.

Quiet older shopping street with boutiques and cafes. Nice change of scenery from the big chains and overwhelming energy from other parts of the city. Town has a cat theme but I did not see any living cats.

Fun shopping street with good food available and plenty of souvenir style shopping. It is conveniently located a short walk west of Nippori fabric town. Lucky for me there was an antique market going on that day at the Enmeiin Temple on the East end. It looks like that happens maybe one weekend a month. Look that up too. Yanaka street is recommended!

Random stop. Well worth it. Great selection and super friendly staff. Not much English spoken but didn't matter. They roast to order if you want beans to go & 10mins approx to wait
