Gertie's Insta game is fantastic. Seeing picture after picture of beautifully red libations put this bar on my radar. It didn't hurt that it's a hotel (affiliated) bar and that's a trend I wholeheartedly support. Being a trend, though, it's important for these bars to have a specific point of view... and I think Gertie's does. The thing is what it projects and who comes might be a bit disconnected.
Like I mentioned, the colorful quality of Gertie's is what drew me in and in sampling their wares, I wanted to skew towards that brightness. Currently, the bar features a Dr. Seuss-inspired menu (maybe that's where the color comes from). With arrows pointing the way to your spirit of choice, the Kentuckian in me demanded a start with bourbon. The 50 year-old* in me demanded I start with the Sally O'Malley. This bright mix of bourbon, yellow chartreuse, amaro nonino, peach syrup, and mint got me in the mood to kick, stretch and show off some sort of 'toe. It's not a ton of booze (especially for the price) but it's strong and the presentation is nice. Plus, the bourbon and digestif ingredients really helped my stomach ease back in to drinking. Buoyed by the first drink, I thought about having another. My initial bartender wandered off so I interacted with another bartender (more on that in a bit). Despite wanting to go all in on the Yertle The Turtle (more bourbon, deep red color, copper mug), I was pushed into getting the Cat In The Hat (visually appealing but the combo of gin and thyme syrup led to a round, soapy pine tree taste in my mouth; not pleasant). After 3 small sips, I was done. Thankfully, they took the drink off the bill.
That matters because Gertie's is pricey. At $14 a pop, think carefully about what you're ordering. Point of order: Nashville, please remember that you are not Chicago/Seattle. Your pricing is getting stupid. That said, happy hour. Gertie's has a strong happy hour. $6 drinks from 4-6 with extended hours and lower pricing on Wednesdays. Those are the times/days to come in, folks. I was surprised with the crowd. Granted, it was Monday but it wasn't overwhelmed with hipsters (maybe the price point keeps them away). Instead, the crowd was a bit older and there to take advantage of the whiskey bar (which is a thing of beauty).
The bar, itself, is cool-looking and accessible. I found the seats a wee bit too low but that's a minor point. The bartenders were where Gertie's can improve some. In my experience, the barstaff ranged from unavailable to disinterested to strangely aggressive. One bartender in particular surprised me by disparaging the menu and its offerings. I get it: you're way too cool for Dr. Seuss and the 'pretty pictures' have nothing to do with how something tastes. I get it. But demeaning the very place that's employing you in front of customers is not a good look. Also not a good look: dismissing a customer's drink choice. Granted, I'm a big boy and should have used my words but I was taken aback by the strong opinion of The Cat In The Hat over the Yertle. As it was, the CITH was not to my liking at all. I know my tastes. I trust my palate. I shouldn't have allowed myself to be talked into something I didn't want. Both my buddy and I were struck by the barstaff and wondered if our interactions were de rigueur or a one off. For the sake of the bar, I hope it's the latter. There's a lot of potential here.
