When in doubt, go with the original location.
That is what I did here, and my golden rule still stands to this day. I had heard of this pizzeria from various sources, but refused to add it to my famous pizza project, as I needed a bit more dark horses and less of the main stream. I got myself on the L train and made it my business to give it a go, even in 97 degree heat. This is one pizza that must rank among top tourist spots, but not for the reason that you may think.
I will explain why, in the form of each slice getting its own respect of a paragraph. I got three slices, a Margherita, a Plain, and a Pepperoni Square. Heck, for $13, that is a delicious deal.
Margherita: The pizza arrives, hot off the oven, onto my paper plate. I could not yet hold this, as the slice was still hot upon first touch, and first bite, burned the top of my mouth. So now I make do like a Ben and Jerry's ice cream pint, going on mouth feel. The crust is very crispy, but a bit well done to my liking. Nice beautiful air pockets, but still, a well done crust. The cheese is flavorful and stringy, the sauce is a typical Margherita sauce. The thropple in this pizza slice works well, and makes it all pretty good. I nod in approval for this one.
Plain slice: Thirty seconds later, I try to try this slice. Again, I foolishly burn my hand and mouth as the slice is still too hot to pick up. I try a Squidward sized bite. Cheese is stringy, lots of cheese on this slice, the sauce is too sweet. Beautiful crust, but again, it is on the well done side. I try to eat this slice without burning myself and each time I burn myself. How I finished this slice with all my fingers intact remains to be seen. Could have went without this one if I had a redo, but it is a solid slice if you are looking for one.
Pepperoni Square: Intimidating, intoxicating, just one of those slices I looked at with interest and in trepidation. Just to be safe, I take a bite of a pepperoni cup. Already I am transported to another part of this universe. So good. So salty. So porky. So cheesy. I had heard they crust them with parmesan cheese. They do and it works. I had to also think about this. Is this slice better than Prince St Pizza? The short answer is yes. It is bigger. The Mike's Hot Honey is a delight. The sauce is deep and ripe but not overpowering. The pepperoni is delicious. A Big 3 of righteousness and delectability. Now, is it better than Paulie Gee's? The short answer is no. But whoever conceived putting hot honey on a pepperoni slice, I applaud you. It works every time.
There is no denying it. The slices are good, the service is friendly, and the experience is unique. Try these slices in your free time and hopefully you will feel how I feel. Who knows? Maybe you too will want to write about it.
