On the Grid : Villa Aurora

"The Villa Aurora is truly a hidden gem in Los Angeles. Initially built in the 20s by the Los Angeles Times as a demo house for new building technologies, the Villa Aurora was purchased by Marta and Lion Feuchtwanger who were escaping Nazi Germany. Their home became a cultural hub for an array of émigré luminaries including Fritz Lang, Thomas Mann, and Bertolt Brecht, among many others. Upon the Feuchtwangers' death, the house and its library of some 30,000 volumes were given over to the care of USC who ultimately took responsibility for the books while the house was sold to Friends and Supporters of the Villa Aurora, a non-profit organization with the support of the German government, who restored the house and opened it to an ongoing artists residency in honor of its history. The house is not regularly open to the public, but they offer tours by appointment and there are a handful of public events each month that are worth the wait." - No Style Studio

Yelp
Arrived for the "Moebius Strips" event. Entered through the garage and mingled for a short while in the hosting room. I was able to catch a glimpse of the view during the golden hour... Beautiful view!

Yelp
Phenomenal views of Santa Monica Bay make up for this not-so-well maintained historical & architectural gem, which serves as a "live" artist residence. The place has amazing potential and is definitely a diamond in the rough with endless possibilities for amazing cultural experiences. Expect to be enveloped in Literary History! A MUST for everyone insterested in this subject...

Yelp
I visited the Villa Aurora for a silent movie event with my family this August and loved it! First of all the view of the coastline all the way to Long Beach is breathtaking. We had a picknick in the garden before the filmscreening. They showed a selection of short silent movies in the stunning historic salon while a musician accompanied the films on the built-in organ. Needless to say the atmosphere was magical. The staff is really friendly and helpful and before the films started we were offered an insightful tour of the house. It was a wonderful family-friendly evening and I put my name on the mailing list to stay updated with their events. The Villa is a residency for artists but also hosts all kinds of concerts, exhibtions and artists talks - definitely an exciting cultural meetingpoint with an interesting historical background.

Yelp
A great house with an extraordinary and unique library from famous exil-writer Lion Feuchtwanger, an amazing salon for events and concerts, a beautiful garden and very kind people organizing the vivid cultural life of the Villa. You should definitely check it out!
