Victoire was the first of the seriously good bakeries in Sydney. Before Zumbo, before Bourke Street, before Black Star Pastry, Victoire was getting it just right.
They import their sourdough flour from France, and you can tell. Their sourdough Levains are probably my favourite bread loaves in the whole wide world (though these days they're rather expensive). This is a little piece of Paris, in the middle of Rozelle. That sounds cheesy, but it's true, they're the real deal.
I have known Victoire Bakery since I was a little tot - and they were still down in East Balmain - so I admit this review is skewed by nostalgia. After East Balmain they moved into the main drag in Balmain, now they're in Rozelle, and who knows, they may keep moving west!
Victoire's taught me what a croissant ought to taste like (and how to pronounce it too). Unfortunately this means that all other croissants dissatisfy me.
