The Best Montreal Caribbean Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"This pan-Caribbean spot is from chef Jae-Anthony Dougan: With a menu that brings together as many Trinidadian street food platters as it does Haitian classics, Dougan’s creativity persists with plates of ‘rasta pasta’, oxtail tacos and shrimp po’ boys. The restaurant doubles as a nightlife spot with its weekend speakeasy Truth in the basement." - JP Karwacki

"Chef Jae-Anthony Dougan was so busy running his first restaurant and catering company that he didn’t make it past week 6 of culinary school. But his television debut this year on Top Chef Canada should help establish that the self-taught chef knows plenty. So does the success of his two new pan-Caribbean restaurants — a pop-up in the Ottawa City Centre complex that sells takeout and freshly ground spice blends, and the far more upscale Tropikàl, on a restaurant-heavy stretch of Montreal’s Notre-Dame West, which Dougan calls “Joe Beef Street.”"

Tropikàl is a vibrant cozy lounge taking all the best cuisines, charm, and culture from each caribbean nation. We booked a late dinner, and boy are we glad we did. As the delicious foods and drinks flowed. The space slowly transformed to a dancehall hub. The DJ set up and the tables slowly disappeared. We didn't need to leave for clubbing as dinner turned into a night of dance. The Jerk calamari was the star of the show. Along with the curry goat with rice and peas tasted home-made, the roti to soak up the gravey was a nice touch. The fritters was too salty (more than saltfish fritters is expected to be). The stuffed plaintains were good, but our table was conflicted on whether the callaou was fresh. The ackee was clearly from a can, with minimal prep. The jerk tacos was on the sweeter side, which was unexpected. The spicy mango wings was good but tasted more lemon pepper than mango, still a little tangy. Their jerk dipping sauce is undefeated. Overall the staff clearly take pride in the asethics and outward appearance of the restaurant. The bathrooms, and accommodations needs serious attention.

This restaurant was awesome! The service was fantastic - the team was ON IT. The food was also really great. My partner and I enjoyed this meal quite a lot and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the jerk calamari - don’t sleep on this dish!

They charge you 25$ if you bring your own birthday cake because “we already serve dessert here” and the food was good but not really authentic except for the rice and beans. Three pieces of oxtail and a cup of pasta.. it was okay , service was a bit slow . They were nice I guess. The rice and chicken came with a good amount

Our experience was underwhelming. The food was fine, but nothing exceptional. In my opinion there are other better Caribbean restaurants in Montreal. The service was fine. The restaurant really needs a cleaning reset. Half of the globes on the light fixtures are missing so it just looks cheep. Also the light fixtures that are there are SO DUSTY, they really need to be clean, it’s unappealing at a restaurant. The mirrors were also really streaky and dirty. The overall restaurant didn’t give me that clean vibes. We reserved, and were sat at the bar as there were no tables available. Two other groups of people who arrived after us were also going to be sat at the bar and you could tell they weren’t happy. If the dinning room is limited I recommend on the reservation site you but both options dinning room and bar so at least when we arrive we aren’t surprised.

I visited this place the last time I was in Montreal just for dancing and it was a great time. This time we were adamant about going for the food and made the reso weeks in advance. My husband and I had trouble deciding on what we wanted to eat because everything was fantastic. We had the Rasta pasta with oxtails, ackee and salt fish fritters, oxtail tacos and the jerk chicken. Oh my! Everything was so good. I was surprised about the amount of chicken we were given, the tacos were flavorful, the pasta had the perfect amount of spice and the fritters were phenomenal. The service 10/10. Jah was our waitress and Arielle is who greeted us at the door, both so kind and attentive. The restaurant was short staffed so we waited about 10 mins before being seated, the staff were incredibly kind and gave us free drinks to apologize for the delay. When Arielle found out it was our anniversary they gave us dessert on the house. The hospitality and service was amazing. I truly recommend to everyone and we may even go back before having to return to Alberta!

Unfortunately not the best service, lack of care. Barely acknowledged my wife and I. They were talking to other tables they know. Service took for ever & just an off vibe. I never put bad reviews but it was so long to even come and get our order in the first place that we were 2 seconds away of just walking out, which we saw another group do after us by the way.... One positive thing is the food was good at least.

Very nice experience. We had stuffed plantain for the appetizer and Griot/Ital Bowl for supper and everything was quite good! The new drinks menu was interesting and tasty, and the cocktail selection is appreciated! Shout out Kenny g !

Yelp
First things first: make a reservation! Visiting from USA-FL and if you ever been to Miami this place has the vibes. Great food, custom drink cocktails, quality service. The hostess of the night was Ariel bubbly personality was able to get my party seated provided recommendations. I had such a great experience. IG:Deejaymadmaxx was turning it up with afrobeats, kompa, Miami music and more. I felt right at home. Food tried was the island wings and salt fish fritters.

Yelp
I went here for an event for Sunday brunch. I paid 20$ and with that I had free mimosas I'm not quite sure if the brunch menu was a regular lunch menu they usually have. But we ordered a few different plates to share, We got the Ackee and saltfish with fried bakes, brioche french toast with fried jerk chicken and deep fried plantain stuffed with jamaican calaloo and Ackee. Everything was really good, but my favorite was the plantain dish We received our food pretty fast The place is very nice, and the waitress was very kind and checked up on us a few times. The mimosas were abit water/juiced down you couldn't really taste the champagne. They were playing reggae/ soul music which was nice. I would like to come here during night time also to see how it is, and also it looks like the menu is different at night time. This place looks good for small and big groups. I would come back

Yelp
I liked my food and the ambiance. They played great music. I sat at the bar, and I was over charged for my drinks. I asked for a lemon drop with don julio and I was charged for double shots which made each lemon drop $28! The bartender knew what he was doing my overcharging me for the my 3 drinks. Other than feeling like the bartender scammed me, I would recommend coming here if you're from the states to feel a good Carribean vibe but beware of your check before giving them your card.

Yelp
I recently attended a media event at Tropikal Restobar to try their new winter menu. As you can see from the photos, every dish not only looked appetizing, it was delicious! If you're ever in the mood for Carribean inspired food and flavours, check out Tropikal! It's also only a 4 min walk away from Lionel Groulx metro if you don't want to drive! The vibe of the restobar is super cool and modern and they have an awesome bar serving really yummy drinks! I tried both their mango & pineapple and the strawberry moscow mules and they were both so refreshing and tasty! The owner and staff of the resto were also super welcoming and informative about not only the ingredients of what is in the food, but also the story and inspiration behind it!

Yelp
It's Saturday night; two of my friends are in town from Toronto. I wanted a fun and vibrant place, and Tropikal popped in my head. I love this place. Thankfully, we made reservations in advance, because this place was hopping. The service was excellent, our waitress was very attentive. We started with our cocktails, and I asked for a Remy cocktail which has coffee as a part of the ingredients. It was a long day, and that shot of caffeine was really appreciated and the drink was an absolute marvel. Then my boyfriend and I shared the appetizer of plantains with aioli sauce. It was really "wow ", then for our main dish we had the goat curry with beans and rice and a piece of roti. It was delicious; I wish the spice level was slightly elevated. The experience of this place is always a joy, and I am really glad my friends had a great time.

Yelp
Food was amazing! The best poutine ever- with jerk chicken. The oxtail was also incredible.

Yelp
I am very surprised to see this place has anywhere lower than a 4-4.5. Why? It has some of the best Caribbean food I have ever had. I won't say I am any kind of Caribbean food expert, but I just wanna relay that I think their food is incredible. I went with some friends, had some appetizers, some mains, and some drinks, and I absolutely loved everything I had. I shared their jerk chicken and po boy sandwich, and wow! If you are looking for an upscale bar with amazing food, definitely check this place out!

Yelp
We went out for date night, dining and cocktails. It wasn't the first time. I personally love it for the well mannered staff throughout, our barkeep/entertainer Kodjo delivered in all the ways that matters; from his flare to his warm presence, he made sure we were embracing the full experience .. we left completely fulfilled. He even kept 'em coming, with perfect timing the food always so amazing!! No matter what you eat, your eyes will roll back! I most definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a flavourful meal, in a place that delivers plenty on ambiance, beautiful staff always smiling, there is even a room for your parties (book by phone or online/reserve) and you know Chef Jae Anthony is incomparable when it comes to taste Tropikal is an amazing supper club that I CANNOT wait to go back to!

Yelp
I am visiting for the states and this place doesn't disappoint. I enjoyed the Rasta Pasta, oxtail tacos, and fries. Everything was amazing. We met the chef, got great recommendations from the bar tender, and they celebrated my birthday with me. The ambience is great; with great decor. Highly recommend. Everything was so good! 10/10! It is also all-black owned!!!

Yelp
Food was good. However, we had a reservation for 6 people for a birthday party. We got there on time, still waited half an hr before being seated. Once at our table, everything from the Chef's special menu was unavailable. Not once did the owner who seemed to b checking at some of the other patrons came to our table to apologize for the scarcity of food. Music was good though

Yelp
Good food and ambiance(music is a bit too loud at times ), the cocktails are expensive imo but the menu is very different from most Caribbean restaurants and the presentation is on point.

Yelp
I was excited when I found out Chef Jae Anthony opened a new restaurant in Montreal! I used to regularly order from Seasoned Dreams back in the day, and have also visited his restaurant Tingz in Ottawa, so I am pretty familiar with Anthony's signature Caribbean fusion cuisine. We ordered takeout via the restaurant's website which was an overall seamless experience. To sample a variety of things on the menu, we got: a fried chicken sandwich, oxtail mac n cheese, a plate of jerk chicken and the plantain bread pudding. My favourite was the mac n cheese: creamy and rich - like an upgraded version of what I used to get from Seasoned Dreams. The jerk chicken came with a hearty portion of rice n peas and was super tasty; next time I'll be sure to ask for extra gravy though. The chicken sandwich was nothing stellar, and it it had clearly been fried in the same oil as some fish, hence why this review is getting 4 stars instead of 5. To finish it off, the plantain bread pudding was such a unique sweet and savoury dessert - definitely a great addition to the menu! Overall a lovely modern Caribbean culinary experience, consistent with Chef Jae Anthony's signature style. I will definitely be back, and looking forward to trying the doubles!
