"Toriya might just be the best place for a late night meal on the LES. Sure, you could come to this izakaya before 10pm and get a spread of skewers, fried squid legs, or perhaps an onigiri. But their fat chicken meatballs and $6 spicy salmon rice balls just taste better after midnight—say, if you’ve already had a couple of drinks somewhere else in the neighborhood. Or, if you’ve been hanging out in their huge, neon-filled space taking down a bottle of sake from their great selection. Especially if you’re in the area, this place should have a permanent spot in your late-night snack and meal rotation." - Carlo Mantuano

"Chicken is often just a fallback order when you’re not in the mood for red meat or a $29 vegetable dish topped with edible flowers. But at Toriko, it’s the main attraction. Sit at the 20-seat chef’s counter at this West Village yakitori spot, and watch as a chef prepares an omakase menu starring various grilled chicken skewers. As he puts each one on your plate and announces the cut - like chicken oysters, thigh, or neck - he’ll point to the corresponding part of the bird on a diagram you’re given at the start of your meal. While all of that makes for entertaining dinner theater, all you’ll really be thinking about is how chicken can possibly taste this good." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg, matt tervooren

Google
I highly recommend Toriya. Delicious authentic yakitori with so many options it's hard to choose. They also offer larger plates and smaller appetizers as well. I had their seafood okonomiyaki which was wonderful. The drink menu is wonderful offering a good selection of Japanese beers, soju, and a very extensive and well crafted sake menu. Also I was seated immediately despite dropping in at a prime time on a Friday evening. The ambiance is very nice, well decorated with excellent choices in music that is not overly loud. The staff were all lovely and very attentive as well. Truly top notch all around.

All the food was really good! The service was amazing and they gave so many good recommendations. The atmosphere is perfect for pictures as it was decorated very nicely. We tried so many things and enjoyed all of them. The okonomiyaki had so much toppings in it and so did the gyuname. The drinks paired really well with everything and were really yummy themselves! There is a huge variety of skewers and they all had distinct individual flavors. The small additions of scallion and wasabi made it really tasty. I would definitely go back to try more of the menu items!

I would suggest going to this place on a weekday because of the quietness and the Ambiance that they give you. a great date night spot or just a place for you to hang out with your friends. The pricing is not as bad it is the food was delicious, and the staff was very attentive.

Google
My favorite Yakitori in the lower Manhattan area! Amazing staff and service, and the tastiest, most deliciously made Japanese food! Everything i ask about and get recommended turns into my favorite dish. I’ve been coming here since last fall (October 2023) and try to make it a point to come here whenever I’m in the area. The yakitori is very consistent and perfectly grilled, all the dishes are portioned bigger than what you’d get in other yakitori spots. I definitely recommend going for the skewers of your choice to start or just jump into their massive share dishes like the karaage, okonomiyaki, and tteokbookgi (spicy rice cakes). I can keep going with their entire menu since I’ve been here enough to have tried everything, but I can honestly say, there wasn’t a dish I did not enjoy. I’m also saying this as I have just came back from Japan! If I miss the food I had during my trip, I can come back here anytime. The decor, theme, vibes from the atmosphere is also perfect. Reminds me of hitting up some late night underground spots out in Osaka, except much roomier. Give the place a try if you’re in LES, you won’t regret it!

Was great to have service on point as well as the food at the end of the night after Xmas after I left my job. Will be back often

Google
Yakitori is clawing its way up the rankings for my favorite types of food groups. Ohhhhh you don't know what Yakitori is? You should have just told me you haven't been to Japan, haha. It's essentially just skewers, typically chicken skewers but has expanded to all types of meats and veggies. My big bro and I walked into Toriya like Godzilla and King Kong ready to DESTROY some skewers. We can both EAT. After walking through a chic minimalist Japanese exterior, the interior was kind of odd. Super dim lighting to the point where I had to turn my phone flashlight on to read the menu like a geriatric, but also had a bunch of neon signs on the walls and music BLASTING. I prefer a much chiller vibe for my Yakitori, but to each their own. Personal preference is beautiful. We went CRAZY. In total, we got 22 skewers and 10 piece gyoza that was actually some of the best I've had this year. See attached pic of that gyoza for your own mental health. The skewers come spaced out one after the other, and you can easily order more as you go which is idyllic. Our favorite skewers were the Kushikatsu Meatballs with tare sauce and the chicken thigh, with the least favorite being the short rib. $12 for a tiny little skewer of mid rib was not worth it. After demolishing everything because we are soldiers of god, the damage totaled up to $125 before tax and tip. No drinks or anything either so lowkey kind of expensive, but also we did get a lot of food so... I'll be back mostly due to the quality of food and how late they are open. This would be a solid place to pop your Yakitori cherry, although I am still looking for a Yakitori spot to really hang my hat on in NYC. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

Yelp
Their food is so good that I came here two days in a row. Their portion sizes are decently large, and prices are relatively similar to other izakayas in Manhattan. Space is quite large and open so it would be a good spot for large parties. Their fried appetizers are seasoned nicely and aren't too greasy. I love their purple sweet potato fries, which is difficult to find elsewhere. I personally would stick to the Japanese foods on the menu and maybe not the buta kimchi. The buta kimchi was good but not worth it, in my opinion.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great food. I love everything we ordered but especially want to applaud on the tofu and pepper wings. My friends and I came one late night. We sat there for almost 3 hrs and never got rushed out. Great place to catch up with your friends with drinks. This is such a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Street neon vibe. Monday to Thursday sake bottle half off - that's a good deal!! The pretty good ones: - Yakitori - overall above average so worth a try. - Okonomoyaki - not hard to fail, tasty. - Fried Oyster - juicy - Fried Squid - like while squid leg fried, had to cut them, pretty good. The to avoid: - Seaweed Salad - those store bought type. - Tako Wasabi - store bought, something is not right didn't love it. - Grilled Cod Roe - the worse dish, probably the quality wasn't good already, it was also overcooked, dry, tasteless. Came with huge slices of cucumber not sure why. Loved the same we tried!

Yelp
Whole new Yakitori experience in NYC!! I am so obsessed with their Yakitori everything was well taste and flavors! Especially chicken thighs are great and soft and yummy!! Karaage was a bit luck of taste but they are crunchy and you can dip with mayo. Age-dashi Tofu is amazing exact broth with. We were just excited and ordered too much but we did ToGo and enjoyed next day as well :) their waiters were very efficient and knowledgeable! Good with some group of people you can share and enjoy!!

Yelp
Such cute decor and vibes at Toriya!! If you want a good late night Japanese cuisine fix this is your spot Everything we got was delicious from skewers to small bites to the nabe Gyunabe 5/5: my fave!! The soup base was soo tasty and the fatty beef was good quality meat too - very vender Karage 5/5: the fried batter was fried just right!! And chicken was also very juicy Fried squid legs 4.5/5: this was also very delicious too - their fried stuff are all great Takoyaki 3.5/5: don't rly taste the seafood in the takoyaki Okonomiyaki 4.5/5: very meaty with all the seafood in it! Would get this again! And def get any of the yakitori skewers!! Only con was the cocktails, it tasted watered down surprisingly

Yelp
The restaurant is dimly lit with Japanese-themed decor. The music was a little too loud for conversation but many guests were still chatting. Though the waiters came around quickly enough the food took a while to come. We got the cucumber dish quickly, but had to wait a while for our chicken slider and okonomiyaki to arrive. The cucumber dish was refreshing. The chicken slider was well-balanced in terms of content. It was stacked a little tall but could be squished down to make it easier to eat. As for the okonomiyaki, it was filling and very savory. I felt the need to wash it down afterwards. Water didn't quite do that but a sip of beer helped. Overall, I would come again to try other things on their menu.

Yelp
Known for their meat skewers (yakitori), this Izayaka is open quite late, though they do have their last call around 12:45am. The interior is quite hip and trendy, but also a little dark in the front room booths. There's much more room in the rear. Happy hour is Mon-Thurs 5-7pm, and they've got some nice $1 deals. Bathrooms are surprisingly modern and clean. The staff was pleasant, but kept trying to take our plates even while we were eating. I get that we were eating around closing time for them (we still had about 20min before they closed), but it was a bit rude and off-putting. The food was good, but a little overpriced. The yakisoba was quite tasty and filling; probably goes well with a drink late at night. The skewers were a bit small. Overall, I'd come back, perhaps slightly earlier next time.

Yelp
So excited to try the new izakaya in lower east side. The yakitori and Kushikatsu are quite good and delicious. Service is good and love the old traditional Japanese decors with modern twist here.

Yelp
Nice new place for Toribar! I recommend if you drink and come for happy hour. Every day of the week they have a cheap $1 special. Highly recommend the fried skewers, and grilled squid. I would pass on the okonomiyaki (too squishy for my liking), karaage (not that flavorful, also be careful because it completely burnt the top of my mouth). Ambiance is amazing. The neon lights and seating made everything look so cool. Service is good, and attentive. Looks like a great place for a night out with friends.

Yelp
The deals at Toriya are too good to pass up! They were having a 50% off bottle of sake special and a $1 menu that rotates daily. On Wednesday it was 3 pieces of takoyaki. We got an assortment of grilled skewers and some deep fried ones, along with an order of fried oysters. They were all pretty good and they had pretty standard options. The atmosphere was also retro and they played city pop all night. I had a great time!

Jason W.

Yelp
Pretty fun izakaya spot with a pretty good happy hour and daily specials. The restaurant has a pretty cool neon-lit decor and the service was great. The kitchen comped us a couple small plates which was a nice touch. Toriya has pretty standard Izakaya with various things on skewers cooked with either salt or tare. They also offer a variety of small plates that are good for sharing. We shared a few skewers with my favorite being the pork jowl. Also, the fried oysters were really well done. Overall, I say Toriya is a great addition to the neighborhood and a good place to stop by with friends or coworkers for some light eats and drinks.

Min B.

Yelp
We went to Toriya on a Friday night. It was surprisingly only half full. We got the seafood okonomiyaki, beef nabe, and 6 skewers for 3 people and felt that it was more than enough. The nabe came with more meat than veggies, and the broth was pretty good. The service was quick and pleasant. The space was nice, but I felt that the loud edm music did not match the ambiance very well. I would not recommend if you want a more traditional izakaya experience.

Michael K.

Yelp
I had a very nice experience service was excellent food out of this world and prices very reasonable I would definitely recommend this place to anyone

Yelp
This cozy spot is great for date night, happy hour with coworkers, or a dinner with family. They are very accommodating for reservations, and let me sit even during a busier hour when I was 20 minutes late due to traffic. As an izakaya, they serve a wide variety of drinks and skewers, which is plenty for just a small snack, but also have an amazing choice of tapa sized appetizers such as squid, both teriyaki and fried, and main dishes as well. Pictured below are a few of my favorite dishes: -beef tongue: which was grilled to a perfect blend of slight crisp but very tender inside -chicken meatball, chicken skin, and chicken thigh skewers -hamachi collar: masterfully grilled and very juicy -tako wasabi: beware of the spice but well paired with the crispy seaweed strips All in all a must-try spot in the lower east side with a variety of options for all taste buds out there!

Julia H.

Yelp
Hard to find authentic yakitori in the city that isn't absurdly priced but Toriya checks all these boxes. Wasn't too hungry and wanted a beer and some skewers and found this spot on Yelp last minute (believe it was a Sunday but it just as well could have been a Monday). Walked in with one other and it was pretty empty. The space itself is pretty cool-- fun lighting and some of the bigger tables in the back are ideal for larger groups. Skewers here were solid. as was the karaage. Don't recall trying other items but would definitely come back on a Friday/Saturday night. Could see it being fun as a place to start on a night out.

Sophia C.

Yelp
Unassuming but fun and cheap izakaya spot! They have daily specials as well as Happy Hour deals and their menu is very affordable even without these specials, which is awesome. The interior is super hip, trendy, and quite spacious. Toriya is a great place to grab some bites and drinks with friends before a night out! Definitely a welcome addition to the Lower East Side.

Crystal H.

Yelp
Another spot worth trying!! We ordered almost everything on the menu and were not disappointed with any. To start we definitely recommend the purple sweet potato fries and chicken karaage. This spot is best with a group so you can share everything, we also really recommend the toppoki and onigiri. They were highlights of the dinner and we just cant stop thinking about them. The yakitori is delicious too! For a great price we ordered a bunch and a few kushikatsu, which are the fried skewers. They have so many options to choose from and you cant go wrong with any. And to finish off the meal you need to get the motsunabe, the yummy broth tops everything off and the meat tower that comes with it. Not to mention, the service is great here and food comes out quick!

Joshua S.

Yelp
Toriya is a must-visit for Japanese cuisine lovers! The menu offers a great variety, including amazingly flavorful Skewers, ensuring there's something for everyone. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive. I have been here twice now and absolutely love it.

Emmie C.

Yelp
Food is good, the only suggestion I have for the owner is: please give each table a pitcher of water instead of asking to refill. The food makes you very thirsty, having a pitcher of water for each table would be very helpful.

Kc Z.

Yelp
I ATE THIS PLACE UP I've literally gone here countless times already since my gf found this place. Nothings better than the food here but the service, bro I love this place omg

Tim S.

Yelp
tl;dr yakitori lovers rejoice! In my yakitori era, I often fantasize about getting a beer and eating skewers at a no frills place. This place didn't have the cozy bar vibe that fully fit the bill, but it was quiet and trendy topped with a fun playlist. We were able to walk-in on a Monday night with the restaurant only being around 1/4 full. You're handed a menu full of delicious sounding items, and a sheet to fill out for yakitori. Some items are limited, so get here early! There's also a sheet that shows $1 specials per night. Ours was $1 for a couple pieces of their pan-fried gyoza that was really good. First we ordered takowasa, which quickly came in a huge portion with extra wasabi on the side and nori sheets to eat it with. I've never had it that way, but this was one of the best versions of takowasa I've had in NYC. We then put in a giant order of skewers and fried skewers (~16 total) that were various pieces of chicken to enoki-wrapped pork belly to deep-fried mochi. One really cool element was you could choose whether you simply wanted salt on it or the traditional tare sauce for each stick. Everything was delicious, but some worth calling out as a must-get: * Chicken skin (with salt) -- limited quantity but so so good. The night we went we got one order at around 6:30p, but one hour later at 7:30p they were out when we wanted another taste of the crispy savory goodness. * Chicken thigh with yuzu (tare sauce) -- new combo of flavor I've never had. Mind-blowing. * Zucchini (tare sauce) -- grilled zucchini has such a good texture and flavor. Also makes the all-meat meal feel a bit healthier, but that's quickly destroyed by the slightly sweet sauce that works so well with it. * Deep-fried lotus root -- something about the breading with this tasted just right. The service forgot about the deep-fried items we ordered, and they were too polite to kick us out (kept refilling our water) and we were too polite to ask them about it. After the polite standoff for about 45 mins, they quickly acknowledged it was on the way but didn't offer an apology. However, they fried up an additional 3 items beyond what we ordered to make up for it. Note they do not serve dessert here, so make plans elsewhere if you require that. For us, we were far too stuffed to even think about it. They also seem to be open late (1am weeknights, 2am weekends), and would be my #1 late night spot. Definitely has taken the spot as my go-to affordable yakitori place in NYC. Will 100% be returning and getting my second order of chicken skin early!

Erika N.

Yelp
Super solid izakaya serving up skewers. The best ones were the dark meat chicken thighs (breast is still breast, aha). I would come back with a group! Although they say they open late on weekdays, they will close if they haven't had any business which left us stranded in LES without any food options at 10:00pm on a Tuesday. They said to just give a call if you will be coming, and they made it up by offering us a free app when we were able to make it.

Jackie Z.

Yelp
As a self-proclaimed izakaya maniac, I'm always on the lookout for succulent skewers, delicately delicious dumplings, cold Asahi, grilled whole squid, and other irresistible Japanese bar food. Luckily, I found all this and more at Toriya. Beyond the quality of food, the service was unbelievable. Super friendly and attentive, the staff really made us feel welcomed and even let us have a taste of some wildly expensive sake. And if the food and service don't impress you, the ambiance will. It was serving "streets of Tokyo" and my friends and I were here for it. I simply cannot wait to go back.

Fu D.

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends for some Yakitori and sake bomb. The place is causal, lively, and the food is decent.

Sarah J.

Yelp
Amazing onighiri yakitori - the smelts was so good. And the seafood Soup was wonderful. Waiters were so kind and attentive. Great place. Don't miss it.

Reagan C.

Yelp
I left with a great experience at the restaurant and will definitely be back. All the yakitori items tasted excellent, service was good with comfortable seating.

Victoria S.

Yelp
This izakaya just opened, and after my first visit yesterday, I will definitely return. My friend and I had several dishes, which were all generous portions, and all outstanding. But I must mention my two favorites, the agedashi tofu and the takoyaki. All the ingredients were so fresh, prepared perfectly, and presented so beautifully. We also had a few glasses of their house Sauvignon Blanc, which was far superior than many house Sauvignon Blancs I have recently had at good restaurants. I also love the decor. Tradition is intertwined with hip modern accents such as neon lights and beautiful orb-shaped hanging lamps, lighting the dark wood walls, tables and seating. The ambience is warm, laid back, yet very put-together all at once. And lastly, but just as important as the food, the staff is top-notch. Attentive to every detail of your dining experience. I very much look forward to my next dining experience at Toriya!

Rodolfo G.

Yelp
My son and I had a fantastic time all I can say is that the portions are small but it makes you want to go back for more different types especially with the chicken teriyaki on a skewer amazing, the ambiance the waiters everyone, but the only glitch? is that my son is a diabetic and he didn't like the fact that he brought his own drink he wanted my son to drink with they have and it's not right I would definitely give them a 5 star, but because of that inconvenience I gave them a 4, they should have been a little more considerate but overall good to go to!!!!

Dale N.

Yelp
This place is criminally underrated. Ambiance feels like a small street in Tokyo. 5 Japanese beers on tap, and great staff.

Joe C.

Yelp
Stick to the skewers which were very good. Service was just as good, which is rare. If they changed the music to be a bit more hip, it would have been perfect, but few things are perfect in this world.

Darren J.

Yelp
Amazing ambience. Great service. The yakitori was great and perfect for large groups and sharing. I highly recommend the gyunabe as the broth was flavorful and the meat was delicious with the dipping sauce. The yakisoba was extremely flavorful as well. The highlight of the restaurant would be its yakitori which were well marinated and tender. The deep fried yakitori was also unique and delicious. I highly recommend the mochi yakitori

Aakash D.

Yelp
Very good ambiance , amazing prices and the food was really good. The lighting was just a bit dark so could not read the menu well. The music was a bit loud as well. Service was amazing, multiple people always coming up.

Alicia N.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Food was very similar from what I had in Japan. Everything was delicious. Service was attentive but staff seemed like having a bad day. There was a waitress walking towards me when I leave. She looked very angry! She didn't say thank you or smile. I hope the owner provides some customer service training to the staff. The ambiance was nice and it wasn't too noisy.

Muhamed H.

Yelp
The vibe is great! It features dark wood with neon signs. They play pop, electronicy music such as Calvin Harris. The service was astounding, servers constantly attended to us, anticipating any of our needs such as new plates or beverages. The food was delectable. The skewers were simple but delicious, cooked perfectly. The chicken thigh was our favorite skewer. I also highly recommend the quail eggs.

Reerang S.

Yelp
I was so excited to visit new Izakaya in LES! The food was very delicious, Especially Yakitori!! It was my favorite! The portion sizes are adequate. Great service and friendly atmosphere. I would go back for dinner and to chill with some beers and sake! Highly recommend.

Donnell G.

Yelp
Suck an amazing place service and everything was so great and I can't wait to go again

Matthew D.

Yelp
The food was excellent yakatori was grilled to perfection, the fried dishes were perfectly fried and the okonomiyaki was amazing... drink menu is exactly what you want in a yakatori. the service was diligent and welcoming.

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Exceptional ambiance, accompanied by outstanding service. The yakitori is a splendid choice for large groups, fostering a perfect sharing experience. I enthusiastically endorse the gyunabe for its rich broth and delectable meat complemented by a delightful dipping sauce. The yakisoba boasts an intensely flavorful profile. The restaurant's standout feature is undeniably its impeccably marinated and tender yakitori. Don't miss the distinctive and delicious deep-fried yakitori, and I wholeheartedly recommend indulging in the mochi yakitori as well.

Michael G.

Yelp
Excellent food & service! Wait staff was super helpful & attentive. Chicken meatballs, chicken thigh skewers and steak skewers were fabulous. That had a $1 daily special on fried sweet potatoes that were also yummy.

Jina P.

Yelp
Fantastic food with a variety of Japanese cuisine + drink options - a perfect place for a hangout with friends or even a casual date night! The service was also top-notch with attentive staff, and the restaurant is nicely decorated with chill vibe and upbeat music that are nice added touches to make your visit even more enjoyable! Highly recommended and I sure will be coming back for more!

Katie H.

Yelp
Toriya is a fun new izakaya for LES! The vibe is lovely and could be a fun option for a casual date or dinner. We even thought it could be a fun place for a larger party. It's spacious and welcoming. We tried many types of their yakitori including shishito peppers, chicken breast, short rib, and zucchini. They also offer a deep fried yakitori option which was delicious! The chicken, mochi, lotus root, and sweet potato were delicious to the point where I probably will be back tomorrow to curb this craving. We also tried their pork belly okonomiyaki which was delicious but very rich and filling. All the portions were a good size, so we left full and happy! They had a long list of beer, wine, sake, and cocktails. I tried a yuzu sochu cocktail that was very refreshing and my partner had a generous pour of lovely sake. The service was lovely and the staff was incredibly considerate and kind. All in all, we will definitely be back! Welcome to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Went for dinner tonight, everything from the food to the service was great! Excited to go back!

Kirk D.

Yelp
Great local izakaya for me. Good food and great service, with $1 food specials Sunday through Thursday. Their yakitori is super tasty, as are their grilled fish. Wish they had more of a full Japanese menu but all good given they are super nearby.

Jin M.

Yelp
I love agedashi tofu and okonomiyaki, I love Sapporo beer. And I love Toriya, which brings it all together! It's simple food, but it doesn't all taste the same. Thankfully, a place with the flavor I'm looking for recently opened in New York City. I love Toriya.

Jihong K.

Yelp
This place is a pretty spacious with good vibes. Loved all the food we ordered and they have a variety of Japanese beers on draft. Ppl are so nice and attentive!

Jung L.

Yelp
Just stopped by this week for quick grab. I just wanted couple of skewers and beers with my buddies but we ended up cycling the full menu. My favorite was the beef skewers and it felt like a nice K-BBQ in Japanese style if you know what I mean. Place has a nice vibe and has modern Japanese izakaya feel to it. Food were prepped quick and they were delicious! There were ample number of staff around making the continuous ordering seamless. Would be my regular going forward.
