"“Zauo” is an amalgamation of the kanji for “Sit” and “Fish”, which is basically the entire concept of this themed restaurant chain in Japan. Unlike those in most seafood restaurants, the aquariums in Zauo are not just for show. When you enter Zauo, you’re given a fishing rod and some bait, and are told to catch your own dinner. You sit on a giant boat, surrounded by an equally impressive aquarium full of fish. The aquarium is full of a variety of pescaterian delights ranging from red snapper, to mackerel, to sharks. If it’s in the aquarium, it’s fair game for you to catch. Whether or not you can catch the more delectable fish depends more on luck than skill. When you eat depends on how well you fish, and how you want your fish prepared. You can get your fish grilled, fried, steamed, and boiled, but the freshest option is to have your fish raw, sashimi style. This is probably the most fun I’ve had for a dinner experience as we were able to catch our own fish. I’d strongly recommend going for the flounders as they taste incredibly good whilst cooked as fried + breaded. The service was also really good as they helped us through choosing and also got a celebration with the drums every time we caught a fish.

Make a reservation in advance, they seemed to be booked pretty fully when I went in. This is an interesting restaurant where you have an option to "catch" your own seafood. Catching your own fish is cheaper than just ordering (and honestly the main point of coming here). The only caveat is that you eat what you caught, you cannot release the fish back. The whole gimmick is pretty fun and is a good one off kind of thing to do.

This restaurant has a lively atmosphere, offering a unique experience where you can try fishing yourself. The catch is fresh, and the food is absolutely delicious.

Wasn’t real fishing but the experience was still fun. More geared for kids and foreigners Food was good but not necessarily great.

This would be an unpopular opinion, but our entire experience was disappointing. We came here under influence from the instagram hype. The restaurant was not as clean as typical Japanese standard and felt less hygienic. The process was confusing for foreigners. Catching the fishes were challenging. When we finally did, the fish portions were small despite its high prices. Additionally, cooked dishes were huge let down, with tiny portions and poorly prepared. Only pro was that the staff were friendly. We suggested skipping this instagram place and don’t be mislead.

So... Go into this experience with an open mind but blind eye. You pay for tickets to catch certain fish. The staff celebrate when you catch something. Just don't look at it in the eye or name it. 5 minutes later it comes to your table to eat. All jokes aside, the food was remarkable, and the service was amazing. Our server HIDE made our experience so great and the staff celebrated our honeymoon in style. Would come back, just wouldn't look the fish in the eyes this time! Haha.

This review might be a bit bias but bear with me. I’m not a big seafood fan but I thought it’ll be cool to come here for the experience. When my family finished fishing, most dishes served was unsatisfying. Although the flavor is unique, some dishes were wasteful, like the sashimi which half the fish isn’t even fully used. We just wasn’t able to fill our stomachs despite the price tag of ¥20,000+. The service however was top notch! The servers were not coarse and was dressed in traditional clothings. Very nice and even allowed us to use their chargers to charge our phones. Lovely atmosphere-

Honestly not that good. Much better places to go eat. The fish in the tanks didn't look very healthy and even noticed some dead ones. The food itself wasn't anything special and fairly forgettable. We are 100% positive we were scammed. We specifically asked for a fish within our token limit. We were led to a tank and told we should fish there, we double checked and assured it was the correct tank. Only to be told after catching our fish we had actually caught the most expensive fish on the menu and would have to buy more tokens. So be warned for staff to scam you otherwise though the staff were friendly and attentive. However the atmosphere was fairly annoying and very loud. This place is probably more appreciated by families with younger kids.
