"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Looking up from ground level, the Westin St. Francis feels almost too big to fathom. Towering 31 stories above Union Square and spanning a city block, this gray stone hotel looks like a European castle that somehow landed in the center of San Francisco. Inside, the lobby follows suit, with soaring ceilings, cream-and-black marble flooring, and huge glittering chandeliers. What's the backstory? In the early 1900s, the family of railroad magnate Charles Crocker dreamed of transforming San Francisco into “the Paris of the West,” constructing the St. Francis as a sort of centerpiece. The hotel, remarkably, survived the 1906 earthquake, and quickly became a magnet for the glitterati. The parade of people who have passed through the hotel reads like a who’s who of…everyone. Louis Armstrong played here, Shirley Temple posed here, Ernest Hemingway drank here, Emperor Hirohito slept here. Perhaps most famously, in 1983, following a state dinner, Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip retired to the hotel’s Windsor Suite, while President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan stayed in the London Suite. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The St. Francis has a whopping 1,196 rooms, split between the hotel’s original (Landmark) building and newer (Tower) building. While parts of the property date back over a century, the rooms feel fresh, thanks to renovations in 2018. I stayed in the Bridgeview Suite, one of the hotel’s 81 suites (though it's currently under renovation). Like the St. Francis itself, the room impressed with sheer scale: Just inside the door, it had its own miniature lobby, with marble flooring and a chandelier overhead. Huge windows granted views of all San Francisco, from the downtown skyscrapers to the glittering Golden Gate Bridge. This room, like all the others on property, features the trademark Westin brand bed, which feels like a cloud. And the rain shower is so soothing, it was hard to get out! Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is free to Marriott Bonvoy members, and $14.95 per day for everyone else. (FWIW, it is incredibly fast!) Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? At the hotel’s sit-down restaurant, The Oak Room, Chef Fernando Reyes draws on various culinary influences to breathe new life into old standards. To wit, his Dungeness crab cake arrives topped with miso-ginger dressing and Napa cabbage kimchi. Indulge in a nightcap at Clock Bar, which harkens San Francisco in the 1920s and is overseen by Michael Mina. In the lobby, Cafe Rito offers grab-and-go Italian fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They brew Starbucks coffee. And the service? The service depends upon who happens to be on the front desk. Some staff members are knowledgeable, helpful, and anticipatory; others are less so. What type of travelers will you find here? Flip-flop wearing tourists laden with shopping bags, Silicon Valley types tapping away on laptops, international travelers toting oversize luggage, airline pilots in uniform. You never know just who’ll you encounter. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? Perhaps no hotel is more intricately interwoven into Bay Area life than the St. Francis. The hotel caters events all over town, hosts proms for local high schools, and organizes fundraisers for the likes of Guide Dogs for the Blind. But above all, locals know the St. Francis for its opulent holiday display in the lobby, centered on a massive, intricate sugar castle, built by Executive Pastry Chef Jean-François Houdre and his team. Many people make an annual pilgrimage to the hotel to come admire the décor. Is there anything you'd change? I would have loved to see more anticipatory service. Any other hotel features worth noting? Chateau Montelena—the Calistoga winery whose Chardonnay famously bested its French competitors in the 1976 Judgment of Paris—has a tasting room in the lobby, the only one outside the chateau. Reserve a tasting in advance, and you can have the Napa experience right here in San Francisco. Riding the elevator in the Tower Building is utterly magical. The glass-walled elevators run up the building’s exterior wall. That means that, at first, you’ll ascend first through darkness, then behind the Landmark Building, and, finally, you’ll clear its roof…and get a breathtaking bird’s-eye panorama of Union Square below. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? If you’re looking for a stunning property with a fascinating history, the St. Francis is a good bet." - Megan McCrea

"A historic luxury hotel located on Powell and Geary Streets on San Francisco’s Union Square, construction on the Westin St. Francis started in 1904, just before the San Francisco Earthquake. It took many years to complete, though, with work on the double-width north wing finally ending in 1913. In 1972, the hotel was expanded and, with the completion of the 390-foot tower to the rear, the Westin St. Francis became one of the largest hotels in the city with more than 1,200 rooms and suites. Though it was already well-known and in and out of the news as one of the most luxurious places to stay on the west coast, the Westin St. Francis didn’t reach its pinnacle of fame until 1921, when it was the scene of Hollywood’s first great scandal. In September, Fatty Arbuckle and friends were staying in several of the hotel’s guest rooms when one of his guests fell ill. Arbuckle would later learn that Virginia Rappe had been hospitalized and, before she died while receiving care, claimed to have been assaulted and raped by Arbuckle. The story made headlines around the world and Arbuckle was brought to trial. He was released when the jury couldn’t decide whether or not to convict him, but his career was ruined forever. Today, the hotel is still standing and plays temporary home to hundreds of guests every night. It is known not for rape scandals anymore - or for the dozens of United Nations delegations that the place hosted throughout the mid-20th century - but for the restored details. A master clock in the lobby was the first in the Western United States, for example. Since 1938 all of the coins that are passed into the hands of hotel employees by guests are laundered in a special machine. This service was introduced in order to avoid dirt spots on the white gloves that the ladies wore around the Westin St. Francis and has been kept going ever since. The Westin St. Francis even employs an individual specifically to wash the coins; this might be the only legally working professional money laundered in the world." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Any hotel in San Francisco that has been operating for more than a century certainly has some stories to tell, and the Westin St. Francis is no exception. From socialites to celebrities to politicians, it seems every bold-faced name has slept (or attended late-night soirees) in its Bliss and Faville–designed towers. Today, guests to this distinctive 1,195-room property still enjoy top-notch service with some thoroughly modern touches: The 1904 landmark building recently underwent a $45 million renovation by Dallas -based interior design firm Forest Perkins, inspired by San Francisco ’s moniker as “The Paris of the West.” Guest rooms are painted in Parisian blue, goldenrod yellow, and peony pink, and feature original crystal chandeliers. Downstairs, travelers can marvel at the lobby’s master clock—the first example in the western United States—and study a collection of photographs by Ansel Adams depicting the hotel’s long-lost Patent Leather Bar. Pro tip: Let the hotel’s resident historian bend your ear during a historical tour."

We were two adults, two teens and stayed 5 nights. I am sure some of the rooms are fine, but we just booked a regular one, and I wanted to make sure other people knew, we would have been much better off at one of the other nearby hotels instead. It was so expensive, even at a conference rate. And our room was tiny, and dingy, and had no light, and no air system so that the moisture from the bathroom just congealed on the walls. Any time someone took a shower, the condensation would just drip down the walls. The towels never dried out. The carpet was also extremely dingy and worn down.It felt very unsanitary and unhealthy. Our room location was terrible. There were two windows that looked into a dark and very narrow interior airway, with other windows about 4-12 feet away, facing directly into ours. We could not open the curtains to let in even that small amount of light because there was a hallway with wide windows directly across, looking straight into our room. I stood in the hallway and even with the shades drawn, I could see the outlines of my family members moving around the room. It was creepy to have zero privacy even with the shades down, and also zero light. It was, functionally, a windowless room. The location is nice but we walked past 4-5 hotels nearby that would have been more affordable (and probably would have assigned us a nicer room). Even walking to the superfancy patisserie a block away (One65 is fantastic!) the croissants were better priced than the ones inside the hotel.

Five stars: The professionalism of the staff; attention to detail in style, lighting, comfort throughout public areas and rooms; very clean; amazing view; fascinating history! Spacious bathroom for dressing, with room for an ironing board. Extra appreciation for quality of the food (club breakfast buffet includes smoked salmon, fresh berries, croissants, sparkling water and good coffee; casual, central cafe serves tasty, light fare in a bright, comfortable, calm space, despite lobby setting). Maximum appreciation for the friendly, helpful staff — especially Luis at the front desk, a gentleman who represents the hotel and San Francisco so well, makes guests welcome and sparks enthusiasm for a stay.

Stayed here a few months back, great location with BART a few blocks away and many things within walking distance. The hotel is luxurious with an amazing concierge lounge. So many historical items in the hotel to see. The fitness room is the largest I’ve experienced in a hotel. Amazing stay

If this review is helpful, please make sure you give it a like. My company chose this hotel and I stayed here for 1 night. The front desk was very kind and helpful. Because this is one of the old grand hotels. The rooms tend to be small. This did not bother me so much. However, it takes a long time for the water to get hot. But when it does, it's very good in the shower. The gym inside of the hotel is excellent .My biggest two problems with the hotel is that the beds were horrible. It was very hard for me to get good rest in this bed. Plus the fact that the toilet would not flush, and I literally had to open up the back of the toilet to get it, to flush. This made me so angry !! If you are visiting San Francisco, the location of this hotel is definitely ideal. Right in the center of everything.

The Westin St. Francis is one of the most iconic hotels in San Francisco. It has a history and heritage dating to before the big earthquake at the turn of the last century.||||Having stayed at the Fairmont, the Palace, the two Intercontinentals, the Marriott Marquis, and the Hyatt Regency, I was excited for my first stay at the Westin St. Francis.||||My stay was a mixed experience.||||First, the positives:||||1) Location, location, location. Union Square is a great part of San Francisco to base yourself. Either for work or pleasure. Almost everything you’ll want to see or do is within walking distance.||||2) Staff were responsive to requests, etc. ||||3) My room, a junior suite, was clean.||||4) Rates are reasonable. ||||5) Club Lounge is nice. The selection at breakfast is a little better than average. At night, the $19 glass of wine is a bit expensive. $12-$14 would be reasonable, but even by hotel standards, $19 is excessive. You might as well go to a restaurant or bar at that price. ||||Now, the negatives:||||1) The hotel advertises itself as renovated, but my junior suite was very tired. Despite advertising renovated suites only the specially named "luxury suites" on the 31st floor have been renovated. Except for the TV, a Samsung TV from 2018, I would guess the suite hadn’t been refreshed or renovated in at least 8 years. There were no USB outlets ANYWHERE. How does a hotel not have USB outlets in the year 2025? Two electrical outlets were built into each nightstand, but one wasn’t working. The walls had scuffs and scratches. Ceilings could use a fresh coat of paint. Some parts of the bathroom could use new grouting or sealing. The décor was heavy on browns and beiges. It was the Westin décor that was very popular from around 2006-2018. Nothing about the suite or décor said this was a suite in the historic Westin St. Francis. It would have been perfectly acceptable for an airport Westin or the Westin in some random suburb. But given the history and heritage of the St. Francis, it was a little below what you would expect.||||2) The hotel advertises that it has “amenities to match your expectations.” But it doesn’t. There is no turndown housekeeping service despite the turndown service being advertised. There are no newspapers. Only basic toiletries in the bathroom are provided with none of the toiletries you’d expect (like a dental kit, mouthwash, etc.). My bathroom had three facecloths but two hand towels and three body towels. Why the discrepancy? Also, the suite had no stocked mini-bar or even a bottle of water. How does a suite not have a stocked mini-bar? Also missing was a corkscrew. The coffee was cheap unbranded coffee, not the Starbucks coffee you usually expect at a Westin.||||3) No in-room F&B amenity or even a welcome letter. Usually, guests staying in a suite get some kind of an amenity or at least a personally addressed welcome letter or thank you card.||||4) The hotel charges a scam resort/destination fee that isn’t disclosed correctly in compliance with California law. At check-in, nothing was provided about what is included in the resort/destination fee.||||5) Limited staff. No doorman or bellman was working when I arrived. The front desk never offered any assistance with luggage.||||6) Elevators can be accessed by anyone walking off the street. No keycard is necessary. That's a security issue.||||All things considered, once you get past the history and heritage of the St. Francis Hotel, the hotel is at best an average Westin with slightly older or tired rooms. The amenities and services don’t match what’s advertised nor do they match expectations for a 4-star or 5-star hotel. Would I return? If the price was right. But I would check the rates of competing hotels. The Intercontinental on Howard Street, the Fairmont, the Palace, and Hyatt Regency are all better options with a nicer, more elevated product.

Google
Nice location. Nice price. Clean hotel. Didn’t have the opportunity to use some hotel services but saw a lot of employees around making sure everything was running smoothly. WiFi worked fine besides the fact that the hotel was crowded. Believe or not, some places still don’t have WiFi working properly due the lack of connectivity and technology updates. Just few disappoints but again too few to mention. I will definitely come back.

I bought a Travel Package for Celebrating 60 Years of Grateful Dead Music August 1-3, 2025 I hope to complete individual category ratings and revise my overall rating with Five ☆s. As one of the distinguished hosts for this iconic San Francisco event I hope St. Francis will be prepared for the logistic of allowing guests to check in early. If the rooms are not ready then having luggage storage options would be appreciated. Gates for the show open at 2:30. Photos from the St. Francis website show this to be a truly special place. I'm looking forward to my stay during the Days Between.

First of all, the hotel is beautiful. It's very centrally located and within walking distance to shopping, restaurants and several tourist attractions. The accommodations were great, the bed was especially comfortable. The Club Lounge was served a great breakfast and good appetizers during Happy Hour. ||The Saint Francis offered several lovely amenities in addition to the Club Lounge for Bonvoy members including an afternoon wine tasting. ||We also enjoyed having night caps at the bar. My husband loved the espresso martinis, and I totally enjoyed having a hot toddy before turning in for the night.||Although all of the staff members were helpful, our concierge, Jeff Aquino, was wonderful. He provided excellent information and guidance and has the perfect personality for his role. He went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our stay as well as made solid recommendations about where to go and what to do. Jeff is a welcoming presence and a valuable asset to the hotel.||We look forward to future stays at the Saint Francis.

Yelp
Fantastically sized rooms with lots of space and conveniently located right on Union Square, and just a couple of blocks from Powell BART station. Additionally the Powell & Hyde cable car runs by the front door, and the turnaround is just down the street. There is a mandatory $30 resort fee added to your cost to stay, but this can be used in the restaurants and bars located within the hotel. There is also a tasting room showcasing wines from the small Montelena Estate in the lobby, however this $30 fee is not accepted here. That being said, the wines are delicious, albeit pricey, but definitely worth a taste. In the lobby there is a small museum detailing the history of the building and some past famous guests, which are further showcased in some other display cabinets around the building. We found the check-in desk seems to get very busy and rarely has enough staff on to deal with all the people in line. This is particularly frustrating as happened with us and other guests the room keys often don't get activated first time at check in. I think half the people in line when I returned were there trying to get the key to their room to work.

Yelp
Overall, very disappointed but trying not to take it out on them. So here goes. Beautiful building in the heart of San Francisco. Lots of homeless and run down buildings nearby. The hotel has 1 restaurant, if you can call it that. It's a walk up, counter service cafe. Boooo. But oh well. And it's open air to the sliding doors that are constantly being opened to the current cold, windy, air. Again, lots of great character to the charm of the structure. The hallways to the room are gorgeous, wide and they get you excited to see your room. Which has good structure. But it is tiny, cramped even and nothing to write home about. Views of the exterior of the other side of the building only. We have titanium elite status we got access to lounge. Which is closed! Because it's a Friday. So they are only open for breakfast. We leave at 6 am and breakfast starts at 0730. They don't even have coffee available at 6 am. I saw airlines crews here. That's usually an indication it will be an overall good accommodation. I don't know how they got this contract. I would NOT intentionally choose this place. They do have a cute little St Francis Museum.

Yelp
Stay here every year. Great location can walk to almost anywhere relevant. Service is good and the room is clean The gym is well equipped and open 24 hours

Yelp
Not the best reviews for this Westin but man do Westin beds make me happy! When you walk into the lobby and see the beautiful decor and intricate architecture, you know you're a great hotel. Rooms are clean and I guess my only complaints would be that the rooms are super tiny but it was just one night.... I'm not moving in.... I can't afford to. Also, the employees I interacted with, aren't the friendliest but again.... That Westin Bed is everything!

Karen D.

Yelp
Wow! The hotel lobby was decorated so beautifully! I felt like I was walking into a very classy, welcoming space. Check-in was a breeze with friendly people. My room had taller than average ceilings with a European flare accentuated with a crystal chandelier. I felt like royalty! I even had a terrific view from my hotel room. This was overall a fantastic stay.

Yelp
Pros: Hotel is very beautiful and historic. We enjoyed: -The architecture -the elevators with windows that face the outside -view of the city and GG bridge from our room, -the ample space our room offered compared to others we've stayed at in the area. -we were given 4 free water bottles which was a plus -museum with information on the hotel's history and famous guests was a cool feature Cons: As other reviews have stated, the workers are currently striking outside the front door of the hotel. This is their right and not unheard of, but it was a little irritating to be yelled at by them upon arriving at the hotel. Other issues: -Our bed didn't have a comforter, only a top sheet and a thin blanket. -26 floors up and you can still hear strikers and street noise -bathroom was not cleaned well. Hairs from previous guests remained on the counter, floor, and tub, and we could tell the mirror hadn't been cleaned. -the prices of the food and drink at the grab and go station was ridiculous. $7.25 for a can of Coke is just wrong. -$15 per day to use the wifi... no thanks. Overall, we liked the location and vibe of the hotel, but for ~$400/night, it was a little disappointing.

Yelp
I finally decided to post online our experience staying at Westin St Francis, San Francisco! It was one of the worst hotels we have stayed at, nationally or internationally! We decided on a "newly remodeled" Grand Deluxe Double room (for 3 adults, 2 nights) with a "walk-in shower", because of my wife's health issues. When we checked in, I reminded the Front Desk Clerk about our reservation and the type of room and the bathroom! Despite that, she gave us a worn out room with a bathtub. Waiting another 1/2 hour at the lobby, we were given another room, far from being a "newly remodeled" room. During the 1st & 2nd nights, all 3 of us developed major nasal congestion, in the morning, our faces were swollen and congested. On the 2nd morning, the sun shined through the window, we observed when moving or walking around, it looked like it was snowing in the room, it wasn't regular dust, it looked like a combination of human skin (larger particles) and dust. The glass table, window sill and any other horizontal surfaces were covered by the same human skin/dust particles. The bathroom, especially the shower section was filthy, black mold, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks! During the checkout, complaining to the hotel manager regarding the room's conditions and showing her the pictures from the room, her reaction and reply was "sometimes I do get nasal congestion too, I know the feeling"! The breakfast buffet ($40, plus taxes, fees and tip, per person = $50) was a joke, very limited selection, some foods seemed to be leftovers from the day(s) before. It is a shame that a major hotel chain promotes itself as a "prime service provider", charging customers accordingly and then neglecting their own obligations.

Lisa X.

Yelp
Previously visited only the lobby area during the holidays/Christmas time. Also previously dined at one of the hotel restaurants. Both good experiences. Recently came by because my friend booked her room here while visiting SF. First of all, they were having issues outside because a lot of their employees were striking. It was uncomfortable to cross the picket line but my friend was only staying 1 night and the room already paid for. Wished we knew sooner that they were striking, I would have recommended somewhere else for her to stay. The checking in took a while and was very unpleasant. The front desk lady seemed to have some attitude towards my friend until I said something. I normally mind my own business but watching their interaction, I was getting annoyed. Also, my friend's room was not yet ready and even though she paid for a room with a view, the reception staff was pushing another room (no view). I know that my friend really wanted that view, so I advised her to wait for the room (took maybe 2 hours of wait) and she was so happy that she did. Kudos to the guy with the dreads that was manning the luggage hold area. He was cool and nice to us. Sorry didn't get his name tho. I did make sure to tip him when we came back for her luggage because he was nice to us. Meanwhile, I took my friend and I to a late lunch and shopping in the Mission and the hotel notified her sometime during our lunch/shopping that her room was ready. I know that tension is high and maybe due to the strike, the hotel is understaffed but please do not take it out at your hotel guests. Also, please pay your staff better so they don't have to strike.

Chris R.

Yelp
Very nice hotel and very accommodating, staff super friendly here and the bathrooms are always super clean. They always decorate around the holidays and special events and be sure to check them out!

Yelp
Hubby and I have been staying at this hotel for nearly 40 years. The St Francis has been here since 1904. Initially, it was just the Saint Francis; now, it's the Westin St Francis in Union Square. The location is everything. Macy's is around the corner, and Nordstrom's is also nearby. There are many restaurants and cafés. After a beautiful day of shopping, lunch, or dinner, you can return to this historic hotel. The service here is impeccable, from the bellhop to the check-in, nothing but five-star Service. The room is always crispy, clean, classy, and has comfortable beds. Yes, yes, yes, and yes again. They have a small coffee shop, and the coffee is the best. They used to have a very nice setup for a coffee shop, but now it's very casual, and you no longer get the ceramic coffee cup. I miss that, but the coffee is still delicious. If you're looking for a fun weekend in the city, this is the a perfect spot, You'll have lots to do and all the restaurants and shopping at your fingertips. There's no way you'll be disappointed. Maybe you'll see me there? Union Square during the holidays is a beautiful idea I'm already booked. Cheers my friends and SYOY 11/12/24 Review #352 #2

Yelp
The Westin St. Francis was a great hotel that we stayed at this past weekend. It's located right by Union Square. It's in a convenient part of town and everything is Uber or Lyft ride away. I think the property used to be two different hotels. I was able to stay in the tower side that was renovated not too long ago. The rooms are fairly big and it was a very comfortable stay considering you're in downtown SF. There is a small refrigerator underneath the TV which made things convenient in case I came back with beverages or things that needed to be cooled down. Be sure to download the Marriott Bonvoy app so you can check in prior to your stay. Usually, they'll try their best to accommodate you and be able to anticipate your room being ready. Most importantly, you'll be able to accumulate points for your nightly stays.

Yelp
I am not sure if I would stay here again, more on that below. Strike happening during my September stay, which impacted some services... more importantly. I had the chance to talk with the workers for the first time about contracts. Otherwise, it is a fine hotel and for that I am giving a 4 star rating. But I hope the folks at Marriott have listened to their staff and worked out a fair contract by now. The room was larger than I expected for an older hotel. It is clean, comfortable, nice view of the square outside. Beautiful reception area with information about the hotel's cool history. Parking is expensive and valet only. The prices for food- even for snacks in the little cafe up front- are wildly high. I think a single can of Pepsi was $6.00 and a single-serving bottle of juice was $15! No pool, which was a bummer as I was hoping for a nightly swim. If you are a higher-level Marriott Bonvoy member, there is super posh complimentary lounge with free breakfast and an impressive after-work appetizer buffet. I was able to buzz into the lounge every morning for an hearty hot breakfast...be sure to tip the servers, generously, if possible. The strike happening during my stay was eye-opening for me. I have been staying in Marriotts nearly every week for over two years. All across the USA. I have a friendly relationship with folks in hotels where I spend a lot of time, but I never really talked with the staff about labor practices, contracts, work schedules, and pay. I spent an hour with the strikers learning about their experiences and it gave me pause. I am hopeful the staff and owners been able to work out a solid contract. As always, please generously tip valet, housekeeping, lounge servers, and anyone else who makes your stay possible. They work so hard!!

Yelp
Unfortunately, there's a labor dispute, so there was a very loud picket line outside the Geary Street side of the hotel. Even more unfortunate was the fact that the hotel blocked off the Powell Street entrance so you *had* to go through the Geary entrance. Since I wasn't really patronizing the hotel, I felt it was okay to wander in to see their holiday Sugar Castle. Well, the Sugar Castle was a bit of a disppointment. The sign stated that it was 12 feet tall, but it was definitely not; it was probably about three and a half feet tall. I asked at the desk and because of renovations and other circumstances, they only have a small one out this year. Regardless, the lady at the front desk was nice and nobody hassled us about being there, so all is good!

Yelp
We usually love this hotel and have stayed here exclusively for the past few years but we were so disappointed in our recent stay. When our car dropped us off, the entrance was closed so we had to walk around to the side and the entire street was full on employees on strike picketing the hotel. They had bullhorns and were banging on drums and buckets. The screamed at us as we entered. It was very unpleasant and they terrified out dog. We had only made the reservation a few days before and later discovered that their staff had been on strike for almost two months. We were never notified when we booked or through email that this was happening. I tried to go enjoy their usually well decorated lobby while my husband checked in but there was wood up over the entrance and it said that area was under construction. I tried to confirm with multiple employees and there was a lot of confusion. I don't know if they were all scabs so they didn't have answers or if they were just incompetent but I was finally done when employee Michelle Harrison was rude and I finally started taking names. I inquired about the Clock Bar because I had made plans with friends to meet there before coming and one employee said it was open and then another told me it was closed. I eventually spoke to a manager who confirmed it was closed (due to inadequate staffing from strikes) and pointed to the small food area across from check in and said that was the bar they were referring to on the "Bar is Open" signs and she said they could get me a drink. At this point, I needed one. (I later had a friend run down and request a jack and coke from the bar and I was shocked when he brought it up and told me it was $32!!!) Our room has clearly not been cleaned. I went to look out the window and got literal gunk on my blouse from the window sill. There was a cracker jack box under the table and when I took my shoes off I could feel crumbs. I was so disgusted and very glad we had only booked one night. Also, I had apparently cancelled a card last month that changed my "status" with the hotel and was advised I would not be getting enhanced internet for free. After changing my plans for the evening, I got in later than expected and at 7am sharp, in a room on the 12th floor we were jolted awake by the sound of employees protesting outside. It did not stop for hours and we were unable to sleep. We tried turning the tv on but it could not drown them out so we got up and left about 3 hours earlier than intended. They should be ashamed of themselves. I cannot believe they would treat customers like this (and apparently staff as well) and not have the decency to tell people they will be screamed at upon entering and exiting and they will absolutely not be able to sleep.

Yelp
The Westin Union Square is in the heart of San Francisco and in a great location. I have traveled the world and must say this is the busiest hotel I have ever seen although my photos don't show it. The lobby and cafe are routinely packed with tourists, families, business men, every type of traveler you can imagine. The hotel is currently undergoing a renovation so we didn't get to enjoy the festive seasonal decoration display but it's a beautiful, historic landmark nonetheless. They were kind enough to allow us an early morning check-in since we had an early flight arrival. We were able to walk to Chinatown and all around the city from the hotel--felt very safe at night too. The room was clean and spacious and we were offered a complimentary hotel credit or free gift as a Marriott Bonvoy member.

Yelp
I just returned home after a quick trip to San Francisco where I stayed two nights at the Westin St. Francis. This is an older hotel right on Union Square. It is a decent area, but you should definitely use caution when walking as one wrong turn and it may not be the best block! (This is probably advice for anywhere in the city, however). My room was cozy (ie: small), but it was fine for my needs and had everything I needed including the heavenly bed that Westin is known for. Unfortunately, however, the walls were thin and I heard a lot of noises while attempting to sleep both nights. Amenities were quality including toiletries in the bathroom, closet space, a full length mirror, working wifi, etc... I forgot to pack toothpaste and they even ran some up for me, which I so appreciated. The hotel has clearly undergone some renovation and it appears that there is more renovation happening now as well. The service from check-in to check out was friendly, the AAA rate was reasonable for San Francisco, and it included bottled waters daily, a $25 credit to the market and onsite restaurants, and several other perks that I wasn't able to take advantage of due to a busy schedule for work. I did utilize the workout room one morning and was pleasantly surprised by the size of it, the quality of equipment, etc... Thanks to Andrea R for waking up early and motivating / meeting me there. If the price is right, I would definitely stay here again, but would likely request a quieter room location if at all possible!

Yelp
I am morally conflicted as I write this review. I love the Westin brand and enjoyed my stay at this property overall. But there was an active strike during our stay. Several members of their housekeeping + hospitality staff were protesting low pay and unfair working conditions. It disappoints me deeply to discover that an expensive hotel that makes a lot of revenue can't figure out how to pay their staff, who, let's be real, are the backbones of the hotel, fairly. I mean, I paid $1200 for my 4-night stay during the Portola festival weekend. I'm sure other guests paid the same amount if not more. You could see, feel, and hear the impact of this strike in most of the common areas. Many of the public restrooms and even some of the most visible spaces (like the bag + luggage assistance area) had overflowing trash in their bins and lacked essential amenities like soap and paper towels. I could hear the protesters from my room on the 11th floor at all hours of the day. And the staff who were onsite often seemed overwhelmed, especially in the Lounge during breakfast hours. (I should add that while breakfast hours were a bit chaotic, the food offered was some of the best breakfast fare I've had at a Marriott group property). The building is stunning. The gym is well-furnished. Our room was gorgeous (and we gotta a lovely upgrade we were super grateful for). But the well-manicured exterior started to feel like a veneer masking some larger issues @ the hotel. This whole experience honestly has me questioning my loyalty to the Westing brand.

Yelp
A classic hotel in the heart of SF, not bad in its foundation. But really bad at the present time. Apparently the hotel staff strike had been going on for 5 weeks already with non-relenting drumming, megaphone messaging, and other unpleasantries. No end in sight. Now let's look at this: While this was totally annoying, the other SF problem - the massive numbers of unhoused people on the streets - is directly connected to this: as a worker, one should be able to make ends meet and get some insurance, the lack of which is unquestionably associated with ending up on the street without social support network. It may be time to rethink goals for these hotels: pay nice, achieve happiness of staff and customers, and reduce the social disaster.

Yelp
5/17 2pm Andrew was SO helpful and lead me to my event and made sure I was taken care of and even walked me and made sure I made it !! Security working in lobby was not helpful at all and pointed me in the absolute wrong directions and was so rude not helpful at all.

Yelp
Incredible hotel. I booked the hotel not knowing the history but from the moment I walked in, you could tell that there was something cool about it. The architecture and style were first class, the rooms were comfortable and spacious and the staff was incredible. Throughout the lower level, you will find artifacts from the golden days of the hotel along with a history lesson on the people who stayed there, from US presidents to the Queen. The location in Union Square made it all the better as it was within walking distance to everything we had planned. The only downside is that we were only there for one night. I will definitely be staying there again when I'm in town.

Angela Q.

Yelp
We originally had reservations at a different property but had to change our travel dates. I selected this property based on reviews and proximity to union station. We didn't plan to rent a car and wanted to take the public transportation to get around. We arrived in town on Saturday around 1pm and got notice that our room was ready. We arrived to the hotel around 2pm and Herman checked us in. We rode BART after walking about 3 blocks with our luggage. There was construction at the Powell entrance but we got in and were very happy to come in out of the cold and rain. We were upgraded to an amazing suite with city views. They also waived our early check in fees. The hotel gave us round trip cable car passes for 1, bike passes (we didn't use them) and 25.00 'per day fee but we could use at the bar or restaurant. I used for two glasses of wine and each day which worked out well and even better if I made it for happy hour. Herman and the concierge was very helpful. We also got help with selecting the right bus to take to ferry building for our Alcatraz tour. The elevator was a smart elevator in which you had to choose the floor and it assigned the car for you. The room was super nice with great views, spacious closet and restroom with a giant tub. Location was great, right on the cable car line and close proximity to the muni bus line too. We went to fisherman's wharf and ferry building on the cable car line and bus line and back. Download the clipper app for BART from the airport, cable cars and bus trips through the MUNI app. You could do the 3 day visitor passport for 31.00 per person. The room was comfortable but got warm for us a couple of nights but we brought fans which helped.

Sherree S.

Yelp
Clean, safe and a lovely experience. I suggest they rip out carpets in the room for cleanliness and have a microwave. Beds are lush and comfortable. The views are amazing!

LaRae B.

Yelp
The hotel workers are on strike and we weren't notified prior to arrival despite having a reservation which would have made it easy for them to contact us. Thankfully they canceled our stay without penalty, however, I would've appreciated a heads up.

Belle Z.

Yelp
4.5, really. Great location literally next to Union Square and cable car (though a very busy stop). It's a stately old hotel, steeped in history and bolstered by friendly staff. The rooms are well-appointed, though my only gripes are with the bathroom. Sliding door with NO lock. It feels flimsy, and if you slide it a little too far there is a gap that eliminated privacy. It's also too easy to pull off track. Furthermore, there is no fan and paper-thin walls. Outside of that, the shower head is nice and so are the bath products. Comfy beds and blackout curtains make sleep a welcoming proposition, and I adored the view--especially for a reasonable price. I would stay here again--even though the bathroom situation is a little dicey.

Yelp
Came here a few times for various conferences/ceremonies/social events. This place is huge and centrally located in the city. I always took taxi (or company organized private transportation) over. The door is facing the union square. Their lobby is always beautifully staged and decorated. There are pretty good amount of help around guiding you to the right conference space. Their food here has always been pretty good. Drinks are decent. Networking space is awesome. Some hundreds of people could easily fit in. Service has been great consistently. Love this place!

Yelp
I had a fine stay here, but the hotel has definitely seen better days. However, the location is top notch and the front desk staff was always so helpful. My room was a little dated and my room phone didn't work. It was blinking constantly and when I called the front desk it sounded so garbled that I had to go downstairs to speak with someone at the front desk to inquire about where I should direct any deliveries. The phone itself was pretty dirty and didn't look like it had been wiped down in awhile. My room though was very clean and my bed was so comfortable! The pillows and blankets provided me with a super cozy sleep. The walls are a tad thin so I could hear everyone in the next room chatting with each other for hours. Luckily, that never lasted into the wee hours and overall wasn't disruptive to my sleep. But just something to be mindful of if you are booking for a group that would like to be free with music or volume of in-room conversations. Overall, I would still give this hotel another shot for convenience in location!

Julia P.

Yelp
We stayed at the Westin SF during a recent dance convention. The room was very nice and spacious. The hotel and convention area was a little confusing to navigate, but very nice overall. Our only negative critique was the lack of a family friendly restaurant within the hotel.

Rare R.

Yelp
A weekend getaway of luxury. I stayed here for the weekend and was throughly impressed. The entrance was beautifully decorated, service was phenomenal and there was some nice welcome gifts our first day. I arrived at the hotel earlier than my husband but was accommodated to our suite. Upon arrival we were given tickets for a trolley ride, Westin San Franscico water bottles and few other nice gifts. The clock bar was a nice place to grab drinks before dinner. I would recommend this hotel if ever in SFO again.

Yelp
Charging almost $20 per day for WiFi is criminal. Elevators are freezing cold. Rooms are outdated.

Yelp
Our wedding on the 32nd floor at the St. Francis was perfect. From the moment we first visited, we knew it was the perfect place for our special day. The venue is breathtaking, with stunning views, creating the most romantic and unforgettable atmosphere. Brittney, the Hotel's event planner, went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. Her professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail made the process so easy. At our tasting, my husband made a comment in passing about something he wanted on our wedding day. Many months later, Brittney remembered and delivered the request. I was so impressed to say the least! She was the best to work with. Our guests are still commenting about the beauty of the venue and the incredible experience they had. We couldn't have imagined a more perfect setting for our wedding day. Thank you!

Yelp
Look, I'm a loyal Marriott member for close to 20 years. I travel a lot for business. This stay is the first negative review I've written.. - yes, there is a strike happening in front of the hotel. - the on-site restaurant is closed due to this strike - I wouldn't have stayed here for this alone - when I got to my room, there are pubes all over the toilet - on the seat, rim, etc. there are also hairs in the shower. - I do not have soap I was delayed getting in. It's 11PM back home, and I still haven't eaten. I'm tired and just don't have time to go out or order Uber Eats. I don't have time to change rooms - the elevator was also interesting and for some reason took 10 minutes to get to my floor. Not sure what's happening here, but I'm disappointed to say the least. If I find one more pube I am going to LOSE IT.

Yelp
Haven't been here since three years ago. We stayed here just after pride month this time (2023). The entrance/lobby was decorated with these beautiful flowers. The hotel was pretty busy. This time I got to stay for a couple of days. The room I stayed in this time was a bit cramped. Almost too small for two people but it was still a lovely room. I got to eat at the hotel restaurant/cafe. The pasta is delicious and pizza was hot and cheesy( the way I like it) and crispy around the edges. It's a nice lobby to hang out in after a long day (if you're here for work). The hotel also has a bar which also has a nice vibe. You can easily grab a Uber or a Lyft right in front of the hotel. Which is really nice! The staff were always very nice and friendly.

Yelp
First time staying at hotel in SF. We decided to just stay for one night after we did a tour. Hotel is super clean and staff are friendly. Like how this hotel is close by to everything in Union Square. Since it was pride weekend, they had beautiful decor of flowers in the lobby area. It smells good too. They sprayed a scent of flowers. Room was nice and clean. Never stayed in a hotel room with a chandelier. It was kind of weird to operate the elevator. You have to select what floor you want to go to and scan your room card before entering the elevator. There is no floor selection button inside. It would be nice if there was elevator music too. Parking is only valet. For one night it cost $85. If you decided not to use the hotel valet, you can park your car at the Union Square parking garage for a cheaper price. Hotel guest get $25 depending on how many night you stay. The $25 credit can go towards food, stainless steel water bottle, two ticket for cable car or bike rentals. We decided to go with the food credit. We used this the next day for breakfast before we checked out of the hotel. $25 credit coupon was good enough for two coffees and 2 pastries.

Yelp
It's an old standby where I've stayed at least 30 times in the past. Service is still good and they are doing their best to keep it intact, despite the fact that the Union Square and downtown areas are a shell of what they once were. Of course, location is a big plus here. Anything you'd need is around Union Square and it's easy to get to other parts of the city if you need to move around. I prefer the tower rooms here to the traditional rooms in the smaller, old building. I'd describe the tower rooms as "typically Westin" - you get exactly what you'd expect. Nothing spectacular, but VERY big by today's standards and still in decent shape. They are very comfortable and most have great views. Service here was very good. The front desk attendant could not have been any friendlier. My Bonvoy Platinum status was recognized and I was upgraded one room category. They provide full daily housekeeping which, these days, is tough to come by. They charge a $25/night amenity fee, which, of course, is always annoying. However, a couple of things that don't make it seem so bad: First, Marriott has gotten better in that the amenity fees are not included in the displayed room rate when you book, so you shouldn't be surprised. Second, the Westin provides a lot for that fee, which I've never experienced for an inter-city hotel: $25 food and beverage credit, a free cocktail at the Clocktower Bar, free bike rentals, and some other touristy stuff. I would have spent the $25 on F&B and bought a cocktail, anyway, so it was a wash for me at the end of the day. Oh, and you get two well-made metal Westin water bottles, which can be refilled at filter stations (although plastic water bottles are still included with your stay).

Yelp
Could be better! Iconic hotel in San Francisco at the Union Square. Great location. A bit old and outdated setup that could be improved but it is not! Rooms are ok, and nothing special. They are however clean and housekeeping is on top it. This is a plus! Elevators are really old. As in 50+ years without the floor control inside of each. If you change your mind there is no going from floor to floor. You have to go out of the elevator and specify what other floor you need. Hotel gives guests $25 daily credit for food and beverages, but that will get you two coffees and a croissant. Not much at all. Lastly my two biggest complaints are on the account of internet service and security! Internet is terrible and network is not safe. In fact I could not use hotels network to log into my work as my employer has firewall. It seems others in my group had the same issue! Security is problematic. I ran into food delivery person not affiliated with the hotel who pushed his way into the elevator demanding to go to certain floor! I feel person like this should not make it to the elevator at all..... All in all, I would not stay here again

Yelp
My friend and I stayed at your hotel for the New Year's Eve in San Francisco. There was a long line for the parking lot at the side of the hotel that took us less than 30 minutes to be checked in with the valet. Coming in from the parking lot and into the hotel, the concierge is the first desk you will see but they don't do room check-in. You will need to go to the lobby. There was a line but we didn't need to wait too long. Once we got to the reception, it took 15 minutes to be done. Our room was the tall tower in the back. When you get to the elevator, there is a cold draft coming from the slits of the elevator. Not well insulated so wear a jacket to protect you from the chilly air. The elevator ride up was fine and has see through glass. If you have vertigo, don't look outside. My friend didn't feel well after looking. On the way down, it's a drop than a ride down but not too bad but you will notice when going down. Our hotel room was good. Furnishings and bathrooms were up-to-date. As for the streaming and TV guide, there were problems using it. In the end, we didn't use the TV at all. That was unfortunate. We needed time to kill while waiting 5 hours until the New Year's fireworks. We decided to have breakfast in the hotel. They have a buffet if you choose it. The buffet had the typical offerings except for toast and bagels. When we sat down, the waitress asked if we wanted coffee and juice that were made by them which we accepted. What we learned once the bill came that the drinks were not included with our breakfast. I had the buffet which they had their own juices but no OJ. There is a service charge. Checking in and checking out of the hotel was smooth but getting our car took time. There were many ahead of us and the wait time was less than 30 minutes. The hotel stay for the price we paid ahead of time was just right with the accommodations but the TV programs and streaming needs to be fixed.

Kelli L.

Yelp
Amazing hotel! Great staff and very clean. Our fridge was broken in our room when we checked in and we notified the front desk, they sent someone up immediately and we got a new fridge. The breakfast is amazing!! Along with the snacks:)

Kelly M.

Yelp
We definitely had a great time here and it's so centrally located so you cannot beat that. They were all beautifully decorated for the holidays and you can tell they're old school fancy. The elevators were so cool - be sure to check them out when you visit. They have a nice gym (with Pelotons!) and they do a great job cleaning up your room during your stay. However, just be aware that space is at a premium in San Francisco. I was surprised at how much smaller then room was vs what I expected. However, I would just pony up for a bigger room next time! The staff were super attentive and you can chat with them on the Marriott app. I also recommend using the app for check in and for your key card. There is also a restaurant, bar and coffee shop downstairs so you will be taken care of.

Yelp
Stayed in one of the updated suites and here's the pros and cons: Pros: service is good, free unlimited water bottles, great location, great views, lots of fast elevators, lobby is inviting and fun, wide hallways. Very family friendly. Love the food and uber credit that comes with the room. They also provide a free microwave upon request. Cons: shower tiles are very dirty brown staining, bathroom doors don't lock, had to request a comforter, bathroom very tiny, bathroom countertop made for one person, no hot water - water is lukewarm and takes a long time to get warm, tv remotes don't work. Food at the cafe is extremely overpriced. For those with lounge access- food runs out fast and they don't refill. They are also consistently out of plates and utensils. Lounge is closed after breakfast on fridays and saturdays.

Keiandra G.

Yelp
Loved my stay here. The flowers make it so pretty. Ask for an updated room with the cute chandelier. Bathrooms aren't that big. The beds are so so comfy. Housekeepers were awesome so tentative!!! The guest service people where you get your cable car voucher an etc were so nice and welcoming. Check in representative are very professional as well. Would stay again. Perfect for shopping and right by Mastros steak house!!!

Yelp
I could not be anymore impressed with my recent stay at the beautiful Westin St. Francis! I was in town recently for the GDC conference and luckily, received a room assignment for this hotel. I stayed for there days and from start to finish, every single person I interacted with, from check-in to check-out and everyone in between, extremely hospitable and just overall stellar and warm customer service. My room overlooked Union Square which was really amazing. I didn't have any in-room dining, but I did try the cafe downstairs by the check-in counter, and it was absolutely delish. THANK YOU for having a pasta bar with a gluten free pasta option!!! Honestly, if I am to ever return to downtown SF, the only option is the Westin. A huge thank you to the bellmen as well for helping me with my bags as I recently underwent surgery and couldn't carry my luggage up and down the stairs. 5/5 stars!!!

Todd L.

Yelp
This is one of the finest hotels in the world! I wish I could move in here permanently. I was out on business, and I was just blown away by how excellent this hotel is. Everything is impeccable, clean, and calming. You feel terrific being in the hotel. The staff was top-notch and perfectly trained for any situation. I felt welcome, valued, and, above all, safe. I'm a gym guy, and finding a good gym in a hotel is hard, even high-end hotels, but this place had a fantastic, huge gym! This place is pricey, so save up your money or Marriott points as I did, and get a room overlooking Union Square...my trip was fantastic from start to finish.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to my stay at the Westin because I really needed to get some rest and relaxation. I actually felt depressed when I walked into my room - I was SO disappointed. The room was tiny, the decor was ugly, and I couldn't even have my curtains open because my window looked directly across to like 20 other hotel rooms. I'm not someone who normally has a problem with feeling claustrophobic, but this room literally made me feel closed in and was not relaxing at all. Sitting in a very small room with not even a glimpse of the sky out the window is miserable. It felt like a glorified jail cell. At first glance the room seemed clean, until I happened to see the side of the bed. Judge for yourself in the picture, but it sure looks like semen to me, with some other disgusting substance next to it (poop or blood?). Gross as hell. Next year when I come back for my annual work retreat, I'm going to forgo the convenience of staying at the same hotel as the meeting and find something nearby that's actually clean, relaxing, and has a window view I can enjoy. I don't think that's too much to ask, especially for $350+. Good riddance, Westin St. Francis.

Yelp
I was here for two nights over the weekend during Christmas and their location is PRIME! Worth every hard earned dollar to stay here, so if you want to spoil yourself you picked a great hotel - Westin by Marriott Absolutely beautiful from the ambience and fragrance of the hotel & Christmas is my favorite time of the year, but they would have done a better job on their showcase in the entrance from Union Square. Right next to the showcase are some stairs up to a lounge that is a Moët bar with small appetizers, absolutely stunning. The bartender, Latino gentleman, cannot recall his name was thee best! I paid for my bottle of Moët to be ready when I arrive back to the hotel after picking up friends from the airport, he was accommodating and loved his personality, I wish I could remember his name. Sorry! This hotel is safe and sound for sure! Getting to your room has extra protection with only access to the elevators via your room key which assigns you which elevator to enter. The room was spacious and immaculate, if you care about water pressure like I do when you shower you'll love it and actually feel clean after. I cannot stand taking a shower with little to nothing on the water pressure and not feeling clean and rinsed off. Plus, they don't have any back-up issues with their plumbing like you experience at lower level hotels. Little off sounding, but some people really care about stuff like this. LOL! Sorry y'all who don't care about that info. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Valet parking available on site and self parking is available about half a block away. Front desk staff is very helpful. Dog friendly hotel. The king room in the Tower is very spacious but not quite a suite. It's quiet from any hallway or neighbor noise, except street honking if you're ultra sensitive. Happy hour at Zeno wine and bar downstairs Wednesday- Saturday 4-6pm. From my view on the 23rd floor, we can see Macys and the bay. Walking distance from the ferry building, Chinatown, and the theater district.

Y M.

Yelp
My husband and I had a wonderful time at the hotel. Our room was on the 18th floor, and it was spacious, clean and quiet. The staffs were friendly and professional. The hotel was beautiful. The bartender was awesome too. The problems at the hotel were long line for check-in, some wait time for elevators, and incorrect bath amenities. There were 2 body wash bottles and 1 conditioner in the bathroom. Shampoo was not there. Everything else was good. I will definitely stay there again.

Oscar G.

Yelp
I stayed for the weekend and from the moment we arrived the service was one hundred percent . To the gentleman that check us in (thanks for telling us about the $30.00 credit per day) and to the concierge, He really made our Saturday (gave us tickets for the trolley) also remembered all of names the very next day. The staff that clean our room was also very helpful and respectful of our space. Everyone greeted us and made us feel welcomed. I will definitely recommend this hotel to all my friends and also look forward to staying here again in the near future. There are some good places to eat like the diner across the street.

Yelp
Something changed recently with this hotel. I'm not sure what it was. They would accommodate you in accordance with the renovations etc, or any errors you had with your booking. You used to receive vouchers with the clock bar to offset the resort fees etc but in my recent check in none of that was present. I was upcharged for fixing my room that didn't match the pictures here on hotels.com. To the property manager: Feel free to reach out to me regarding this.
