Set in a stunning former bank near City Hall, the Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia combines historic elegance with luxe amenities and top-notch service.
"There’s no social hour quite like this. For those who want to turn up, but not get turned out — this is it. The new winter social hour at the W Philadelphia in Center City (4-6 pm on weekdays) is serving less for less that’s ironically more fulfilling. Their new mini-cocktail menu is pouring up smaller versions of the classics (mini-tini, mini-rita, mini-quiri, and mini-loma) for under $10 in both alcoholic and zero-proof options. It’s the wise response for those who want to try multiple drinks without hammering their wallet — or themselves. I was impressed by the quality of these cocktails (I had the the mini-loma and mini-quiri) that hit the spot. Beverage director Isai Xolalpa, who’s a seasonal cocktail expert in his own right, doesn’t scale back from his talents even as the portion sizes differ. For example, the zero-proof mini-rita is made with a notable zero-proof agave spirit, super lime, simple syrup, and zero-proof orange liqueur. Bites wise, they are serving tasty flatbreads and “mini” versions of their popular appetizers (such as cheesesteak empanadas and crispy layered potatoes topped with trout caviar) all under $10. Translation: Come here when you want something light without lowering your upscale dining standards." - Ernest Owens
"The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia’s Broad Street address in Center City features a neoclassical bank building from the 1900s. It offers top-tier service, classically appointed guestrooms, Chef Richard Sandoval’s Latin-American menu at Aqimero, Richel D’ambra Spa + Salon, and a well-stocked fitness center. The hotel is suited for special events and large gatherings, featuring 301 guest rooms and suites." - Travel + Leisure Editors
"Set within a century-old, Pantheon-inspired former bank building, the Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia raises Center City living to classical heights. When the building opened in 1904, the Girard Trust marble dome was the largest in the country, and its columns and styling matched its inspiration down to its oculus 142 feet from the floor, the exact height as the Roman original. Today, every stay starts in this grandiose rotunda, where staff man the immaculately preserved bank-teller booths. Guest rooms and suites are in the attached 30-story office tower, gutted and transformed into a hotel by Ritz-Carlton. All 299 rooms and suites bring classic Ritz-Carlton elegance, with wood furnishings matching gold, sage, and pumpkin hues. High ceilings and picture windows with stunning city views enhance the vibe, while spa-style marble bathrooms have rain showers."
"Set in a former bank adjacent to City Hall, the Ritz-Carlton stands out—even on the corner of downtown Philadelphia’s busy Broad Street. The building, constructed in 1908, was designed to resemble the Pantheon, complete with large white columns, a portico entrance, and gigantic dome that towers over the stately lobby. The grandiosity extends to the interiors, too; the 301 guest rooms and suites are a study in soothing, neutral tones. All of the furnishings are comfortable and contemporary, while large windows offer downtown views and plenty of natural light. (Though, if you like your space, consider booking a spacious Superior Room or suite; if you go with the latter, you’re guaranteed access to the Club Lounge, a 30th-floor oasis with a dedicated concierge and light bites available throughout the day.)" - Regan Stephens, Katie James Watkinson
"Give us a little bit of background on this place: Where is it, and what's the vibe?Set in a former bank adjacent to City Hall, the Ritz-Carlton stands out—even on the corner of downtown Philadelphia’s busy Broad Street. The building, constructed in 1908, was designed to resemble the Pantheon, complete with large white columns, a portico entrance, and gigantic dome that towers over the stately lobby. What’s the crowd like?Though the price point is higher than many other local hotels, the Ritz-Carlton sees an influx of weekday warriors, weekend wedding guests, and touristy families and couples at all times. How was check in? The entrance is never without a friendly valet or bellman, and the front desk team are swift and efficient in whisking you to your room (note the guaranteed 4 p.m. check-in time, which is standard across Philly). Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room. The 301 guest rooms and suites are a study in soothing, neutral tones. All of the furnishings are comfortable and contemporary, while large windows offer downtown views and plenty of natural light. Standard rooms are a bit tight at 280 square feet, so those who prefer more leg room should consider a spacious Superior Room or suite. History buffs: Book the City Hall guest room for prime views of Benny Frank. How about the little things, like the mini-bar, or the shower goodies? Anything that made your stay more comfortable? If you book a suite, you’re guaranteed access to the Club Lounge, a 30th-floor oasis with a dedicated concierge and light bites available throughout the day (breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, snacks, and evening chocolates and cordials). How about the room service, and the dining options, in general? Worth it?There’s just one on-site restaurant, Aquimero, where critically-acclaimed Chef Richard Sandoval serves Latin-American cuisine (think grilled meats, a raw bar, and ceviches) plus an extensive collection of mezcal. Expect a mix of locals and hotel guests chowing down on Brazilian short ribs, Yucatecan prawns, and pork tostadas. It’s a winning spot for dinner if you don’t feel like dining out, but for breakfast (not included) and lunch, be sure to explore some local eats. Did the staff treat you right? The Ritz-Carlton brand is known for delivering on exceptional service, and this location is no exception. Any other services or features you'd like to shout out? The Richel D’Ambra Spa & Salon is a tranquil place to while away a late afternoon or Sunday morning during your stay. If you don’t have time for a full treatment but need a quick hit of R&R, hotel guests can pay a $25 fee to use the facilities, which include a steam and sauna. So, bottom line: worth it, and why?If Insta-worthy interiors are your main hotel criteria, The Ritz-Carlton reigns supreme in Philadelphia. If you're bringing your kids, there’s no more convenient location—the hotel is within walking distance of City Hall, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Reading Terminal Market, and more. If a historic setting is key, prepare to walk in the footsteps of America’s forefathers—and absorb all the newfound energy that Philly has to offer." - Katie James Watkinson
