The Mission/ East Village

After looking all over downtown for a breakfast spot, I stumbled upon this hidden gem. The food here was amazing, and a menu with a wide variety of options to really satisfy anyone that you're with. Fair warning though, if you do decide to come here (which you definitely should) you need to bring your appetite! For the price, the portion sizes were huge. That included the specialty coffees. The staff here were all amazing and super attentive to top off the experience. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Will recommend for the food but our server sucked! AND BISCUITS AND GRAVY WHERE THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD. Doughy biscuits and bland sauce. Chilaquiles were AMAZING! Espresso also good. French toast was the BEST WE EVER HAD!

Her French Toast was nice and she said it was delicious. We bot enjoyed the meal very much. Our server was Guatemalan (I love to know who people are and where they are from. It opens opportunities for cultural expansion) the whe staff seemed from the same area. But they said they were not family. Maybe it was a miscommunication. Our server spoke very good English. The price was very reasonable considering it was East Village and a bit yuppyish. Overall, a very enjoyable experience. I would recommend the place to everyone.

I have been to both Mission locations for breakfast and it’s always top notch. They have quality breakfast and great coffee. I have enjoyed every dish I have ordered. Definitely a great location for breakfast.

Steak and eggs were fantastic. Mexican mocha was also very good (ordered mine with oatmilk and no whip topping). Pretty good prices for the location too.

Skipped over us a few times. The food was good, the coffee was very good. Nice cappuccino. We had chilaquiles, tamales and pancakes. All were pretty good, certainly not the best we’ve had of any of the three but all high level and done well. Parking is pretty tough had to find a spot 2-3 blocks away. Which is fine. Overall we would definitely come back.

Fantastic food and a great location! My wife and I live just a few blocks away, and we have been here many times. The food is consistently excellent, I've tried quite a few menu items at this point and I wasn't disappointed with any of them. The French toast is something special. I always like to try the seasonal offerings. My wife is a vegetarian and they have plenty of options for her as well. The coffee is also some of the best in the neighborhood, I always enjoy the caramel macchiato. The service is excellent as well, even when they are busy they are always attentive. The patio is dog friendly and we love the bring our pug with us. This is a must in the East Village!

Eh. I had some high hope for this place as it was raved by many people. We were here for a late brunch and seats were empty. I've got house quesadilla and it was alright. I wish there was special sauce or some kind of spice kick to this, but nothing. It was just normal quesadillas. I thought for the hype, it would be something special? Parking is street parking, they do offer outdoor seating and the bathroom has its own key, as it's outside the building.

Such a cozy spot. No wait for breakfast on a Monday. The seats and table are worn and mismatched giving off a nice casual ambience. No central air so we were toasty, but they had all the doors open that allowed for a breeze. Food: delicious banana French toast. Not cloyingly sweet... just right. They use their banana bread as the base. Abc omelet: the omelet itself was fine and fresh. Nothing crazy..: the real star was the rosemary potatoes and rosemary toast... incredible. Really tasty cold brew. The portions were generous and the prices were cheap (coming from LA).

Never thought I'd taste a loco moco equivalent to that found on Waikiki but sure found it here! The gravy was smooth silky and had nice bits of mushroom in it, the beef loath was cooked well and the rice was just right!! Loved the Mexican mocha and the omelette was good but those rosemary potatoes so YUMMY!! Service was fast and staff was kind!! Was very low key inside, parking wasn't bad even though it's all on the street.

I had the Zen Breakfast, which was absolutely amazing. The seasoning of the tofu was very good and combined very well with the brown rice. The squash and zucchini were a unique and marvelous complimentary side. I felt very satisfied but not overly stuffed or guilty for indulging in a gratifying full breakfast (which I normally don't have). This place is my new favorite breakfast Café!

This has become one of my staples in the brunch rotation. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. I highly recommend the rosemary potatoes! There's a little bit of everything on the menu and I've never had anything bad. Some of my favorites: blueberry pancakes, rosemary potatoes, avocado toast. My wife is celiac and they have an entire gluten free menu! The ambiance had a welcoming casual vibe. It can get a little noisy when it's full, but nothing too bad.

This location is great. They have a walk in coffee bar for coffee / pastry to go or a sit down and eat there. Avocado toast on that rosemary bread is delicious. The fresh beets add a great sweetness. The corn and green tamales with eggs and beans was delicious! Some French toast came out to a close table and I think I need that next time!!

This is my favorite breakfast/ brunch spot in downtown. I looooooveee their breakfast & brunch options! The coffee bar is amazing too! There's so many things you can get! The service is always pretty quick. Once you order your food comes out quick & fresh! It's a very low key environment, just like cafe vibes.

Breakfast was great. Coffee was great, food was great and service was great. Got the sweet corn tamale dish and my husband got the Mission rosemary. All of the food was amazing. I have been to this location before and it never disappoints. Highly recommend.

Everything was wonderful. I went during the week, no wait at all. The service was great. No complains. I sat outside and sure it's downtown but there was no chaos. Even if it was it wouldn't be the restaurants fault. I mean it is in downtown. The food was delicious! Portion was decent. I got the Chilaquiles. Very good!

Excellent service for a highly popular brunch spot in downtown San Diego. Space was pretty casual and gave a "diner vibe" versus elevated brunch. Good was ok, nothing special... just pretty average considering its popularity. Tried the pancakes and eggs and chilaquiles. Both average.

Me and my kids recently moved into thw neighborhood and have been trying to come here. We finally got the chance. We literally walked here in less than 5mins. My daughter got the ffruit and granola bowl that she loved. I got the soyrizo scramble it was ok not too much flavor but I was more disappointed because it was cold I barley touched it. We might come back for coffees and smoothies I'm not sure. Thw customer service was good though that's why they get 4 stars

The ambiance was nice and right when got there we were sat which was very nice. Out server was very nice and sweet we enjoyed her but service was very slow. It took us a long time to get our food. The coffee wasn't sweet the omelet was filling, croissant was very good. We had several mimosas which was nice but I would say our came out pricey!

I've walked pass this place a 1000 times as I live near by and never stopped in. After a few errands I decided that the time has come. After grabbing a seat, I settled on a mimosa and the classic pancakes with eggs/sausage. I haven't had pancakes in over a year and this stack was perfect. The pancakes are sizable and warm, which melts the butter. The eggs were delicious and the bacon was out of this world. I haven't had breakfast food in a long time and this experience may make me change that.

This is hands down the best breakfast spot in San Diego (and maybe in the US). There are multiple locations now but the east village one is tucked away on a corner and is a hidden gem. They have an incredible menu of options from somewhat traditional to unique dishes. The mission croissant is so good and my go to every time I'm here. They also have great sweet options if preferred... their cinnamon French toast is incredible. Highly recommend getting the rosemary potatoes as your side to any dish... best flavor and perfectly cooked!! Service is also on it, you get seated quickly and they're all over it to get your order and take care of you. Highly highly recommend going here!!

My girlie & I walked down to 13th & J in East Village on a beautiful Saturday for brunch. The cute white historical building at the corner holds the best breakfast restaurant in San Diego. So decided to go there of course! The weather was sunny so we decided to sit outside on the patio. We were seated right away. The table was next to a fairly active street so we could also people watch. It took us a while to decide from all the delicious food on the menu, so we ordered a michelada & bloodie to help. Yum! We finally chose the cinnamon french toast & Sweet corn & chili tamale. When the food arrived, the portions were big, affordable and the food was fantastic! The plating was beautiful with a signature swirl of compote on the plate. My favorite was hands down the freshly made soft doughy bread & crisp crunch of the cinnamon french toast! Hands down the best french toast Ive ever had. I believe they make the bread in house too! Plus I added the bacon & eggs on the side. Just wow!

Walked here on a whim. Two of us were sat within ten minutes! We got our drink order taken immediately and they were brought out very quickly. We then unfortunately waited 15 minutes before we had any other service. Our waitress apologized and the rest of our experience was amazing! The food was absolutely delicious. We got the pineapple upside down pancakes, side of potatoes, and sweet corn tamales with eggs and black beans. Everything was cooked so well and between the two of us, we couldn't even eat half of the food on the table. The prices were extremely reasonable for the area. Would go back and have already suggested friends go there! The patio seating was adorable but because we sat out there, I didn't actually see inside to say anything about that.

Big, flavorful plates of food. Nothing too fancy, the prices reflect the homemade aspects. I got papas locas, some potatoes were super crispy and and others less so - but I liked the texture variety. A steady stream of people, but no one seemed rushed. Would like to come back to try the pancakes, saw them on a few tables and they looked great. Plenty of seating inside and out, and I also saw people ordering coffee and food to go from the counter.

I'm not sure why I waited so long to go here. The food was amazing for brunch, the service was fast and wonderful, and the overall environment was great!

Solid brunch spot by the Gaslamp District! The service is quick and the food is delicious. Their entrees are huge and best to come here with a party of 4 so that you can split a bunch of goodies amongst your group and they even let you order a ton of different sides. Their breakfast is like a fusion of Mexican and American brunch.

Friendly, and quick service! I had an excellent experience. I stopped by on a Sunday morning the weekend of Comic-con and didn't have to wait at all! I got the sweet corn and chile tamales. I love tamales and this hit the spot. Delicious!

I have been coming to The Mission since they opened. The food is always delicious. I have never had a disappointing dish. The juice, espresso drinks, and food keep us coming back. The service is more inconsistent. We understand it is a very popular place and the staff does their best so we focus on the food. We love the booths, the art on the walls and the cottage feel.

The Mission in East Village is a quaint spot on J Street in the East Village. Parking is really difficult in the area as there is primarily only street parking available. We stopped in on a weekday for a late brunch and there were only a few other tables while we were there. We were greeted cheerily by the staff as we walked in and the service overall was prompt and friendly throughout our meal. We ordered a Chorizo Mission Omelette and a Tortilla Soup to share. The thought of jalapeños, chipotle crema, tomato and jack cheese with the chorizo had us really looking forward to a spicy delectable omelette but we found it a bit bland so that was a disappointment. We added plenty of hot sauce to spice it up a bit. The Tortilla Soup was super fresh and tasty and we highly recommend that and would order it again. As for atmosphere, I would probably recommend sitting inside to avoid the potential homeless encounters in the area. Definitely a solid brunch spot with excellent service.

I was happy to finally try this place after walking by it so many times. We were seated immediately at 9 am on a Sunday. The restaurant seemed to fill up with patrons around 10. I ordered the French toast and my boyfriend got the breakfast burrito with chorizo. Everything was tasty! The French toast was some of the best I've ever had with a great flavor and texture. The burrito was on the smaller side but I liked that they came in two pieces with black beans. I enjoyed dining here and understand why it's always so busy with people now.

The food at the Mission is excellent. The baked French toast is a show-stopper. It is essentially a rich bread pudding covered in whipped cream, carmel bits, and fresh banana (with real maple syrup on the side). It is so filling that I brought some back to our hotel to enjoy later. I also really liked how clean the chicken sausages were. My partner got the chilaquiles with soy chorizo and raved about them all day (I would have tried it but I don't eat cheese). He was really impressed. We especially enjoyed the service--we felt like the staff actually cared about us and our experience. We appreciated that they took the time to explain dishes to us, but also to dish with us a little bit about things in general. Everyone got the balance right--personable and professional. Pitch perfect. We sat outside on the street so the ambiance was the city itself, which we always love to soak in when we travel. We will definitely return to the Mission East Village whenever we are in downtown San Diego.

Portions were huge & fairly priced, the waiter was amazing and the environment was very friendly. I got the breakfast potatoes, a side of bacon, and the pancakes. Everything was delicious!

Love the food here! They have amazing vegetarian options. I got the tamales and absolutely enjoyed it! The hot chocolate was yummy and not overly sweet. Highly recommend checking this place out for brunch!

The food and service are excellent here- location has changed over the years but the food is worth the experience. Many locals and friendly waiters staff. Portions are very large, I also have had their pancakes and French toast in the past and they are a must try. My burrito had too much potatoes in it compared to eggs so if you aren't a fan of potatoes I suggest asking for less or trying something other than the burrito

Go GO GO GO GO! Everything was delicious! Definitely meant to be a brunch restaurant. I got the Loco Moco and I loved how they had pickled onions on top. Totally could've gone without the green onions but that is just a personal preference. It was a lot more saucy than I am used to but I did like the use of mushrooms that they had in the gravy. My partner also got the classic buttermilk pancakes with the berries on top rather than in the batter mix. It was amazing ! High recommend.

Went to the Mission for breakfast. I heard good things about it. DELICIOUS We started breakfast with coffee and a warm piece of toasty banana bread! So good! The coffee was great also. My husband ordered the steak and eggs. That was served with toast and fantastic rosemary potatoes. I usually don't order steak and eggs because the steak is usually leather. This steak was flavorful and juicy. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla. Scrambled eggs with bacon and jack cheese, tomatoes and scallions. Side of black beans and salsa. The outside was cooked so nice, slightly crispy! We had to take left overs home! The service was outstanding! I just love this place and can't wait to try it again! DO IT!

Overall: 3.7/5 (dine in) The place was empty when we came in for late lunch on Friday afternoon. It took a while for the food to come out all at once but the portions were huge. The people here are super nice. Our waiter was attentive and always had our water refilled. Mango Green Tea Smoothie ($8): This was not good and tasted spicy from the tajin dust. Mission Chilaquiles ($14): This was a huge dish of black beans with the chips and eggs on top. I like it when the chips are coated with the eggs instead and had better chilaquiles elsewhere. I thought this one was lacking flavor so I used a lot of hot sauce. Sweet Hawaiian Portuguese Linguica ($13) + four strips of double smoked bacon ($5): I didn't get to try this but both the guys who got this really liked it and were satisfied after their meal.

Food was great, service was excellent! We had the strawberry banana pancakes, Desayuno burrito, side of eggs and bacon. Would visit again when in San Diego.

Great experience with some work colleagues. I remember great service and a cute ambiance. I was having a lot of trouble picking a meal to eat because there were so many good options! I ended up getting a frittata which was great and I would get again in theory but if I do return there are so many things I would like to try. We all had a blast and it was a good meal. The food was not mind blowing so that is the reason for the 4/5 stars.

the mocha was so tasty and smooth. The Sweet Hawaiian Portuguese Linguica is my new favorite sausage! It was the perfect blend of savory with a hint of spice. The brown rice, egg and toast that came with it were a perfect mixture. Savored it so much, took home the leftovers and enjoyed it all over again. Also, the outdoor seating is so serene!

By far one of the best breakfast potatoes in San Diego! I've been here a few times and always get the Rosemary potatoes. They are so delicious. The Mission is the perfect spot to get your breakfast fix and start the day off right. I highly recommend it to others and will be back again. The staff are polite. I'm always seated in a timely manner and the table is cleared frequently. If you're in the SD area it's a must try!

There was virtually no wait even though we went at around brunch on a weekend, and service was very prompt, so that was nice. It's also more affordable than some of the other brunch places we've checked out. We got the mission rosemary, the steak and eggs, and the oregon chai latte. The food was really whatever. The horseradish cream that came with the steak and eggs was just straight up bad. The best part of the meal was the rosemary bread, it was plush and really yummy. Everything else was just really whatever. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back here if a friend wanted to check them out (and maybe we just didn't get something that they're known for), but I wouldn't be the one to suggest coming here. I'm not sure if maybe I didn't clarify that I wanted the chai latte to be iced, but I always get my drinks iced. It came out hot, so I had to clarify, and it came out iced relatively quickly. The drink itself was kind of whatever too.

Here it was, my last day in San Diego. I had eaten a lot of great stuff. It was one amazing restaurant after another. And this was no different. The Mission I had identified as one of the best breakfast spots in the city, so here I went. And it did not disappoint. Located in probably what the locals call, "the young kid, " part of town, all the doors are open, and the sunshine shines right down on you as you're deciding what to eat. This place had one of those rare menus were every single dish sounded like an absolute banger. I had to resort to asking the server for help. And my suspicions were confirmed. I ordered the Steak & Eggs (Grilled CAB Steak + horseradish cream + rosemary potatoes + grilled rosemary bread + scrambled eggs). The steak was cut up in cubes. You know what that usually means, overcooked, tough steak. Not in this case! Juicy, tender chunks of charred deliciousness. Very impressed. On top of Mega crispy potatoes. With fluffy eggs. Crusty bread. This dish had everything, and I am very glad that I got it. You should get it, too. I also got to sample the Mission Rosemary (Crispy rosemary potatoes + scrambled eggs + tomato + scallions + rosemary bread) (Add two strips of chicken sausage). This was also really good. All the secondary components of the meal were here, the potatoes, the eggs, etc. Then they added the chicken sausage. Which was nice. They were plump and juicy and very flavorful, making up for the inherent blandness of chicken. Overall, this restaurant was a banger. If you're thinking about coming here, and you read this review, come here. There's a lot of breakfast competition in San Diego, and I carefully chose this place for a reason. So good.

The service wasn't good. I waited 30 minutes for my food and had to remind the manager that I'd ordered. The food was delicious, per usual. This was for the North Park branch of The Mission. Not the one on J street.

Sweet Sunday surprise! I've been craving some French toast and found this place. We haven't been out to brunch in forever. Usually it's such a pain to try to brunch on the weekends with where to go, long wait times and needing to make reservations weeks ahead of time. But coming here was surprisingly better than we expected! We called, no reservations required. Walk in and chose your seating. There were tables available inside and out. We picked a booth inside and done! That easy! We were going to get two separate dishes, but after watching other peoples orders come out, we decided one order of French toast was big enough to share. It was huge! We decided to add some bacon and potatoes to round out the meal. The French toast was exactly what I was looking for and hit the spot. More than filling, it satisfied my craving! Everything was delicious. Staff was attentive and quick. They have two other locations but we thought this was the easiest to get in and out on a Sunday for brunch. We were right! There's only street parking available but we got lucky and parked only a block away!

I went here a year ago and got the steak and hash. It was amazing. The steak was juicy, tender, and flavorful. The potatoes were nice and crispy. So when I went the other day and ordered the same item, I was expecting the same. I was wrong. The steak and potatos disappointed me. It had no flavor. The steak was also chewy, and the potatos were mushy. But, the service was awesome. Our waiter was on point. I wish I had gotten her name to give her credit.

There is a reason The Mission is in the top 5 best breakfast spots on basically EVERY list! I've never had less than an excellent experience here. I had friends in town recently and knew this was a must go to spot, and they LOVED it. The only con I've ever had here was the parking, but that's expected anytime you go anywhere downtown. We had the french toast, pancakes, and the chilaquiles and all of them were incredible! I'm more of a waffle guy, but these pancakes got me hooked. They are so fluffy and flavorful, and the fresh strawberries in the middle make them that much better. The french toast was far above your average breakfast spot french toast. And the chilaquiles... so good! They go above and beyond and plate these meals in a beautifully artistic fashion. We went on a Monday morning around 9 o'clock, walked right in and had a coffee in our hand 2 minutes later. We finished all three meals and a couple cups of coffee and walked out 50 min later. Staff was very quick and kind. Highly recommend!

After the hot chocolate race in San Diego was over, was starving for some food. Most of the brunch places we called had a wait of 45- minutes to an hour , and this was no exception. We waited an estimated 20 minutes before we got seated , which was super awesome. The service was awesome and the food was delicious. I got the French toast and it was delicious ... topped with fresh bananas, pecans and warm Syrup with fresh cream on top. You can tell the cream was homemade and not out of a can ... Mmmmm good like Mr. Food says. My Other half got More of a traditional Breakfast which was tasty as well. We shared a side of chicken sausage which was flavorful and plenty to enjoy with our meals. Mission is a good brunch spot to check out.

Coffee, coffee, coffee. That's what I love best about this place along with the breakfast entrees after a brisk walk downtown. Well, actually we stopped by after the Hot Chocolate Run. First sign that it is a popular eatery is a waiting line and full seating inside. We didn't wait long before we were seated and the first thing I ordered was a coffee. The Mission is one of few places that serve great tasting coffee that isn't oily, watery, or tastes like acid. Kudos to them for serving great coffee and free refills. The other great thing about them is their service is spot on. They come by at the right time to check on you and they don't rush you. Gotta love that. Will definitely stop by again when I'm in the area.

What a cute gem! I came here with a co-worker for lunch on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. Mission is located in the heart of East Village, Downtown San Diego. Inside, it's cozy and spacious; there is open-air seating. It's a Mexican-style breakfast place but the menu is varied with many Vegetarian and gluten-free options; you can order breakfast and lunch and they offer an assortment of coffees and even kombuchas. I ordered the avocado toast and added bacon (because I'm extra) and a Hibiscus Kombucha. The service here is fast, friendly and professional. If you're looking for a delicious brunch spot, Mission is the place for you. Parking is very challenging (street parking only) and the neighborhood is surrounded by homeless people.
