"There’s a chance you went too hard at the clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter last night and need a reliable breakfast. This preserved corner building from the 1870s serves morning staples like french toast made with housemade cinnamon bread, plus some great breakfast burritos and chilaquiles. It also has a full coffee bar with great drip and specialty drinks—order the hammerhead, a combination of espresso and drip for a more aggressive jolt. When you’re feeling more like a normal human, head over to The Quartyard. They’re always hosting different events such as live music, roller skating, yoga classes, and more." - ligaya malones

Google
Out of all the places we’ve tried on our trip, 10+, this was the most mediocre. It was fine, but nothing was great and the prices were much higher than other breakfasts we had that ended up being much better. I got the banana caramel French toast and my husband got the pancakes. The French toast was good but way too sweet after the first couple of bites to enjoy and it was cooked and served in a cast iron skillet so it was very well stuck to the skillet and difficult to eat. I gave up about half way through and called it. The pancakes were good and fluffy, the side of bacon only came with 2 slices which was disappointing for $5 with 2 eggs.

This cute brunch spot, built into an old home, has so much charm and character! The cozy setting adds to the experience, making it feel warm and inviting. The food was pretty good—simple yet satisfying. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a laid-back brunch.

Google
After looking all over downtown for a breakfast spot, I stumbled upon this hidden gem. The food here was amazing, and a menu with a wide variety of options to really satisfy anyone that you're with. Fair warning though, if you do decide to come here (which you definitely should) you need to bring your appetite! For the price, the portion sizes were huge. That included the specialty coffees. The staff here were all amazing and super attentive to top off the experience. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Google
Picked up the saddest, smallest looking burrito, in perhaps all of California. I had them leave out the black beans, and add bacon. There is a smaller than average banana for scale, for reference. We’re talking 5” here. I got this for my friend, and coworker. It was utterly disappointing. $22.00 plus tip not included. People walked by and mocked the underwhelming size. There were no chips or salsa included, either. What in the utter shrinkage?! Will not be going back!

Google
Will recommend for the food but our server sucked! AND BISCUITS AND GRAVY WHERE THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD. Doughy biscuits and bland sauce. Chilaquiles were AMAZING! Espresso also good. French toast was the BEST WE EVER HAD!

Matthew A

Google
I’ve come here on and off over the years and maybe I built it up in my head, but boy were the banana pancakes disappointing. When you cut into them with your fork they rip in half. A really weird consistency. The scrambled eggs also taste like instant/powder and not freshly made. The Portuguese sausage was good however and the service was friendly and attentive. Wouldn’t come back.

Jessica Bautista

Google
The place and the service was outstanding. All employees were efficient and nice. The food was just ok, nothing to rave about. The drinks were just normal, the eggs in the chilaquiles were made from powder, and all other flavours were average/good. With the exception of the rosemary potatoes, those were really good. I will come to this place if you want to chill and have a nice time with family or friends, the food is just filler.

Google
I have been to both Mission locations for breakfast and it’s always top notch. They have quality breakfast and great coffee. I have enjoyed every dish I have ordered. Definitely a great location for breakfast.

Yelp
Jorge is the best bartender!! He is always a good vibe. It does get kinda warm in here but I love mission brewery!

Derick G.

Yelp
The food here is quite Excellent. And the prices are reasonable, i love ambiance, it feels like you're tucked away in a secret little corner. Too many things to try everytime I come back

Elena W.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! The customer service is also extremely caring especially if your server is Estella!!

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
i've been here several times in the past few years although last time it seemed like they were closed. tried again last thursday after reading the reviews and was glad they were open. this is a solid breakfast/brunch place that in my opinion is much better than other overhyped breakfast chain restaurants. I just love the homey cozy atmosphere and the menu that is one page only. the food is as good as the pictures show - just look at all the yumminess!! the only few downsides were the extra crispy potatoes (no judgment if that's your thing) and the service which was good, fast and accurate but not particularly memorable or warm. these are not absolute deal breakers and not worth knocking off a star for though.

Ant R.

Yelp
Best of the Best; San Diego's 10/10 Breakfast Spot. Today, I'm having the Breakfast Burritos and yesterday I had the Biscuits and Gravy. Service here is terrific - great people working here. And the coffee is good! Shoot! Clean, spacious dining area.

Carol C.

Yelp
I love their pancakes and french toast...its a must have in the heart of San Diego especially if you are a visitor. Their coffee is the bomb! The staff are friendly and respectful. Place is clean and classic! I wish to go back again to try some more in their menu...

Ali B.

Yelp
Enjoyed a tasty omelette with rosemary potatoes this morning, delicious! This location was super busy. A great spot for families to enjoy good food. Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. 2025/5

Yelp
The good: I dined outside and got seated immediately. It was nice to people watch from our sunny seats. The hostess was really friendly and easy to talk to. We got the coffee cloud (coffee with ice cream and whipped cream), the sweet corn and chili tamales, and the sweet Hawaiian Portuguese linguica with eggs, rice, rosemary bread, tomato and scallions. I thought the breakfast menu offered many familiar things with fun and interesting twists. Our food came out in a timely manner. Our corn and chili tamales dish had a nice kick to it. The bad: The cloud drink was basically like an affogato but kind of worse because the two elements didn't melt into one another the way a hot espresso over vanilla gelato does. Instead, it seemed like cold coffee with a cloud chunk of regular vanilla ice cream inside like an ice cream float. My husband ended up drinking out of the straw and drank all the coffee, not even realizing there was ice cream on top. He was unimpressed by the breakfast but I thought the breakfast was decent. We got street parking but there were quite a few homeless people around. The interesting: They have multiple locations in San Diego.

Yelp
I would say the mission is a pretty solid spot for brunch but not outstanding. This may differ across locations, but this is for the one in East Village. It had its pros but it definitely had its cons also. Located right by Petco Park, this location could definitely get a good amount of foot traffic. They don't have their own designated parking lot, it's all street parking. You could get lucky and snag a close spot or you may have to go on a search. The place itself is pretty clean. They have a dog friendly patio and indoor seating. There's a good amount of seating as well. Food was pretty good and the sizes were pretty good. I had the avocado toast with a side of bacon and it was yummy. It was pretty big too and I like that they didn't skimp on the avocado. The lemon curd pancakes will always be one of my favorite ones. Service was the questionable part. We didn't have the best service experience which is why I feel like I can't give it any higher than 3 stars. Our server was doing his job but he wasn't the most attentive and friendly. When we were waiting for him to take our check with our card, we waited like 20mins just to get his attention, and he still didn't take it. We ended up going to the front and paying ourselves. I still think the mission is a solid spot. The food has been pretty good for all the times I've been. I could've just caught service on an off day. I know I'd be willing to go again or hit up another location. I still say give this place a try.

Lilly J.

Yelp
Pancakes were delicious! And I got a virgin Bloody Mary and that was tasty, my partner got the biscuits and gravy- he said the only thing was the gravy wasn't very thick. The consistency was like milk. Still good though. I will def come back for the chilequiles.

Dante S.

Yelp
The best part of waking up is Mission on your plate. Corny? Maybe. But it's exactly how I felt after starting my morning at Mission. With both indoor and outdoor seating, the wait was short--even for a weekend breakfast spot. You seat yourself, and within seconds, a friendly staff member was at our table. One woman seemed to be running the whole floor like a pro, with quick help from a man bringing dishes and drinks out. It was impressive to watch. Now, the food--wow!!! It came out fast, hot, and fresh. I had the House-Made Cinnamon French Toast with eggs and bacon. Every bite was perfectly fluffy and flavorful--I honestly didn't want to stop eating, even when I was full. My co-worker had the Baked Banana Caramel French Toast, which was just as delicious (I stole a bite, of course). The portions are generous, and the prices are almost too good to be true for the quality and quantity. If you're looking for a cozy spot with killer breakfast, don't sleep on this place. Just wake up and go.

Charlotte B.

Yelp
It's a great location for brunch in the downtown area. We got their Desayuno burrito with added bacon and a side of avocado & a caramel macchiato. The burrito was big enough to share and was flavorful. The coffee was nothing special and I wouldn't come back for it. The service was great and the ambiance was nice. We sat outside and it was a perfectly sunny day. Street parking.

Oso L.

Yelp
I've come here on and off over the years and maybe I built it up in my head, but boy were the banana pancakes disappointing. When you cut into them with your fork they rip in half. So you basically have a strip of pancake in one half and then some pancake filling in the other. A really weird consistency. The scrambled eggs also taste like instant/powder and not freshly made. The Portuguese sausage was good however and the service was friendly and attentive. Wouldn't come back.

Justine D.

Yelp
Such a cozy spot. No wait for breakfast on a Monday. The seats and table are worn and mismatched giving off a nice casual ambience. No central air so we were toasty, but they had all the doors open that allowed for a breeze. Food: delicious banana French toast. Not cloyingly sweet... just right. They use their banana bread as the base. Abc omelet: the omelet itself was fine and fresh. Nothing crazy..: the real star was the rosemary potatoes and rosemary toast... incredible. Really tasty cold brew. The portions were generous and the prices were cheap (coming from LA).

Marisol A.

Yelp
Never thought I'd taste a loco moco equivalent to that found on Waikiki but sure found it here! The gravy was smooth silky and had nice bits of mushroom in it, the beef loath was cooked well and the rice was just right!! Loved the Mexican mocha and the omelette was good but those rosemary potatoes so YUMMY!! Service was fast and staff was kind!! Was very low key inside, parking wasn't bad even though it's all on the street.

Leslie G.

Yelp
This location is great. They have a walk in coffee bar for coffee / pastry to go or a sit down and eat there. Avocado toast on that rosemary bread is delicious. The fresh beets add a great sweetness. The corn and green tamales with eggs and beans was delicious! Some French toast came out to a close table and I think I need that next time!!

Mark C.

Yelp
Yumiko did a fantastic job! She was super friendly and attentive. The food came out quick and tasted great. Thanks for the great experience!

Somi J.

Yelp
Eh. I had some high hope for this place as it was raved by many people. We were here for a late brunch and seats were empty. I've got house quesadilla and it was alright. I wish there was special sauce or some kind of spice kick to this, but nothing. It was just normal quesadillas. I thought for the hype, it would be something special? Parking is street parking, they do offer outdoor seating and the bathroom has its own key, as it's outside the building.

Teresa M.

Yelp
The serve staff is great the food is great so what's wrong?...The MANAGER is RUDE, condescending and DOESN'T RESPECT customers! We've been frequenting Mission for over 10 years at least 1x week but avoid it now if we see her! She fired one of our favorite waitstaff! We now go to the restaurant where she works.

Justin M.

Yelp
This has become one of my staples in the brunch rotation. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. I highly recommend the rosemary potatoes! There's a little bit of everything on the menu and I've never had anything bad. Some of my favorites: blueberry pancakes, rosemary potatoes, avocado toast. My wife is celiac and they have an entire gluten free menu! The ambiance had a welcoming casual vibe. It can get a little noisy when it's full, but nothing too bad.

Brittaney L.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast/ brunch spot in downtown. I looooooveee their breakfast & brunch options! The coffee bar is amazing too! There's so many things you can get! The service is always pretty quick. Once you order your food comes out quick & fresh! It's a very low key environment, just like cafe vibes.

Janelle H.

Yelp
We've been coming here for over 15 years and love this East Village hidden gem. The breakfast dishes are superior to some of the other trendy breakfast restaurants in the area. We love the Cinnamon French toast, Lemon Curd Pancakes, Granola Pancakes, Vegan Granola with Greek yogurt, Soy Chorizo and Egg Scramble, Sweet Corn and Chili Tamales, Desayuno Burrito (add the soy chorizo!), Mission Rosemary, and the Papas Loco (also add soy chorizo here!). The staff here are wonderful - Julio, Hugo, Amanda, Youmiko, and David will get you anything you need. It's a great place for families and friends and easy to grab a table before 11 on the weekends. If you are visiting during the week, they have specials only offered weekday mornings for a steal!

Ed L.

Yelp
Really great food, excellent breakfast spot. Parking can be a little challenging and the line to get in can get tedious. But the food is truly some of the best in San Diego. There are comparable restaurants but only among the best in the area. They could use longer hours though. The staff was very nice and apologetic at how long the kitchen was taking due to how busy they were. Portions are quite ample.

Leigha M.

Yelp
Delicious!! The lavender latte and banana French toast. It was a very decadent morning and I feel good about it.

alex

Yelp
"The team at the Mission went above and beyond to provide me and my Family with the best dining experience ever! Definitely will come back again.

James H.

Yelp
The Mission always delivers good food and a welcoming staff. Never a wait if you arrive before 9am on a weekend and it's a great place to meetup before Padres day games. It's a great place to bring your kids and I highly recommend you add the soy chorizo to the dishes that offer it. Last pro tip is that street parking in the immediate area is free before 10am Monday-Saturday and free on Sundays.

Steve M.

Yelp
Is the East Village Mission Restaurant closed for good? We walked by last week and the restaurant was totally closed. Patio furniture was also inside locked up tight as a drum. Today, 5/13/25, I called to see if the restaurant was open, however, no one picked up the call.

C F.

Yelp
If it was an option I will give to this place on customer service -5, Mario our waiter totally rude, he doesn't know what customer service is, after the Hot Chocolate run we decide to go here, 45min waiting to sit, 35minutes to get serve 4/7 order tortilla soup and 1 never NERVER arrive!!! My friend was looking us eating and her food never was served, when Finally Mario show up was to ask if she still want it. At this point everyone finished to eat already. I feel so bad for my friend that missed her breakfast. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE!!'

Sarah D.

Raelene P.

Yelp
Not the best savory place but the sweets are good! The French toast was yummy. The steak and eggs were a waste of money - not enough steak

Jonathan M.

Yelp
We were seated upon arrival and ordered Cafe Au Lait and Hammerhead. Both were very good. We ordered tortilla soup and biscuits and gravy for our meals. The service was extremely slow - it took nearly 30 minutes to get two simple dishes. The tortilla soup was a bit salty and nothing special. The biscuits & gravy was runny, lacked flavor, and the "gravy" had the consistency of soup. The jalapeno biscuits were tasty and more bread-like than biscuit. Overall, the service was extremely poor due to the long wait to be fed. The food was just ok. More attention to detail is needed. I likely won't go back.

Kamran A.

Yelp
Amazing vibe and food , we has so much fun at the place. Thank you Definitely recommend it for a group

Robert H.

Yelp
I've walked pass this place a 1000 times as I live near by and never stopped in. After a few errands I decided that the time has come. After grabbing a seat, I settled on a mimosa and the classic pancakes with eggs/sausage. I haven't had pancakes in over a year and this stack was perfect. The pancakes are sizable and warm, which melts the butter. The eggs were delicious and the bacon was out of this world. I haven't had breakfast food in a long time and this experience may make me change that.

Sam T.

Yelp
This is hands down the best breakfast spot in San Diego (and maybe in the US). There are multiple locations now but the east village one is tucked away on a corner and is a hidden gem. They have an incredible menu of options from somewhat traditional to unique dishes. The mission croissant is so good and my go to every time I'm here. They also have great sweet options if preferred... their cinnamon French toast is incredible. Highly recommend getting the rosemary potatoes as your side to any dish... best flavor and perfectly cooked!! Service is also on it, you get seated quickly and they're all over it to get your order and take care of you. Highly highly recommend going here!!

Wendy R.

Yelp
Everything was wonderful. I went during the week, no wait at all. The service was great. No complains. I sat outside and sure it's downtown but there was no chaos. Even if it was it wouldn't be the restaurants fault. I mean it is in downtown. The food was delicious! Portion was decent. I got the Chilaquiles. Very good!

Samuel M.

Yelp
May have been a little warm inside but the service from Jorge was A1 -- unmatched!! This is the spot to be

Crystal K.

Yelp
My girlie & I walked down to 13th & J in East Village on a beautiful Saturday for brunch. The cute white historical building at the corner holds the best breakfast restaurant in San Diego. So decided to go there of course! The weather was sunny so we decided to sit outside on the patio. We were seated right away. The table was next to a fairly active street so we could also people watch. It took us a while to decide from all the delicious food on the menu, so we ordered a michelada & bloodie to help. Yum! We finally chose the cinnamon french toast & Sweet corn & chili tamale. When the food arrived, the portions were big, affordable and the food was fantastic! The plating was beautiful with a signature swirl of compote on the plate. My favorite was hands down the freshly made soft doughy bread & crisp crunch of the cinnamon french toast! Hands down the best french toast Ive ever had. I believe they make the bread in house too! Plus I added the bacon & eggs on the side. Just wow!

Jenna B.

Yelp
Big, flavorful plates of food. Nothing too fancy, the prices reflect the homemade aspects. I got papas locas, some potatoes were super crispy and and others less so - but I liked the texture variety. A steady stream of people, but no one seemed rushed. Would like to come back to try the pancakes, saw them on a few tables and they looked great. Plenty of seating inside and out, and I also saw people ordering coffee and food to go from the counter.

James M.

Yelp
Fantastic food and a great location! My wife and I live just a few blocks away, and we have been here many times. The food is consistently excellent, I've tried quite a few menu items at this point and I wasn't disappointed with any of them. The French toast is something special. I always like to try the seasonal offerings. My wife is a vegetarian and they have plenty of options for her as well. The coffee is also some of the best in the neighborhood, I always enjoy the caramel macchiato. The service is excellent as well, even when they are busy they are always attentive. The patio is dog friendly and we love the bring our pug with us. This is a must in the East Village!

Darcie J.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I waited so long to go here. The food was amazing for brunch, the service was fast and wonderful, and the overall environment was great!

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Solid brunch spot by the Gaslamp District! The service is quick and the food is delicious. Their entrees are huge and best to come here with a party of 4 so that you can split a bunch of goodies amongst your group and they even let you order a ton of different sides. Their breakfast is like a fusion of Mexican and American brunch.

Jessica K.

Yelp
Walked here on a whim. Two of us were sat within ten minutes! We got our drink order taken immediately and they were brought out very quickly. We then unfortunately waited 15 minutes before we had any other service. Our waitress apologized and the rest of our experience was amazing! The food was absolutely delicious. We got the pineapple upside down pancakes, side of potatoes, and sweet corn tamales with eggs and black beans. Everything was cooked so well and between the two of us, we couldn't even eat half of the food on the table. The prices were extremely reasonable for the area. Would go back and have already suggested friends go there! The patio seating was adorable but because we sat out there, I didn't actually see inside to say anything about that.

Dave K.

Yelp
Excellent service for a highly popular brunch spot in downtown San Diego. Space was pretty casual and gave a "diner vibe" versus elevated brunch. Good was ok, nothing special... just pretty average considering its popularity. Tried the pancakes and eggs and chilaquiles. Both average.

Reina A.

Yelp
I have been coming to The Mission since they opened. The food is always delicious. I have never had a disappointing dish. The juice, espresso drinks, and food keep us coming back. The service is more inconsistent. We understand it is a very popular place and the staff does their best so we focus on the food. We love the booths, the art on the walls and the cottage feel.

Gamini G.

Yelp
Love the food here! They have amazing vegetarian options. I got the tamales and absolutely enjoyed it! The hot chocolate was yummy and not overly sweet. Highly recommend checking this place out for brunch!

Beaux X.

Yelp
Close to my abode. Coveniency, walking distance. Reasonable, breakfast and lunch specials.

Selena A.

Yelp
Friendly, and quick service! I had an excellent experience. I stopped by on a Sunday morning the weekend of Comic-con and didn't have to wait at all! I got the sweet corn and chile tamales. I love tamales and this hit the spot. Delicious!

Raoul U.

Yelp
The food at the Mission is excellent. The baked French toast is a show-stopper. It is essentially a rich bread pudding covered in whipped cream, carmel bits, and fresh banana (with real maple syrup on the side). It is so filling that I brought some back to our hotel to enjoy later. I also really liked how clean the chicken sausages were. My partner got the chilaquiles with soy chorizo and raved about them all day (I would have tried it but I don't eat cheese). He was really impressed. We especially enjoyed the service--we felt like the staff actually cared about us and our experience. We appreciated that they took the time to explain dishes to us, but also to dish with us a little bit about things in general. Everyone got the balance right--personable and professional. Pitch perfect. We sat outside on the street so the ambiance was the city itself, which we always love to soak in when we travel. We will definitely return to the Mission East Village whenever we are in downtown San Diego.

Sabrina A.

Yelp
Portions were huge & fairly priced, the waiter was amazing and the environment was very friendly. I got the breakfast potatoes, a side of bacon, and the pancakes. Everything was delicious!
