Favourite pub in Stoke Newington! Been here so many times and keep coming back. Always some new and interesting beers on tap, great selection of IPAs. Very nice staff, happy to recommend beers according to customer's preferences. Indian menu is a massive plus, their spicy dishes go very well with some beers. Excellent chicken wings and onion bhaji.👍

We visited the Jolly Butchers on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink. This isn’t a review of the food, though the roast did look good. I hadn’t been to this pub in about 10 years, and like the area, it has changed quite a bit - certainly more polished. The beer selection is large, but the barman was pretty reluctant to let us try anything. In fact, he wasn’t particularly welcoming and didn’t say much at all - even thanks when we paid. I always find it odd when there's such a wide selection of beers but little willingness to offer samples. Another server asked if we had booked a table, but we explained we just wanted a drink and asked if we could sit in the area clearly designated for drinks only, which seemed to confuse them. It feels like the pub has gradually morphed into more of a restaurant, perhaps due to lingering effects of COVID, with an emphasis on table service (and service charge). That said, the drinks were good, and the overall atmosphere was chilled. It's the kind of place you could visit alone, with a group, or with family. It’s nice, but when it comes to the overall pub experience (and it being welcoming), especially in an area with so many options, there are better places for just going for a few drinks.

Love this place! Very welcoming and accommodating. Top notch food, the Sunday roast is second to none and they have a terrific selection of real ale too. High ceilings create an airy space, a bright shining gem in the heart of Stoke Newington.

I've been here on a few occasions, both just for drinks and to eat as well. The tap selection they have is great, with some regulars and a few rotating ones. There's always something interesting to drink. The food is delicious. I'm surprised that more pubs aren't doing Indian food. I've had the duck kathi roll a couple of times, which is probably my favorite. We ordered the ribs last time, which were well seasoned and fall off the bone. Service is always very friendly, the prices reasonable, and just a nice and relaxed vibe. If I lived closer this would be my local.

Google
"Posh", authentic Indian food at a reasonable price, wide range of beers on tap and a relaxed friendly atmosphere... what's not to love? Having lived in the area for a while now, we walked past The Jolly Butchers a few times and had entirely the wrong impression from the outside. Wish we'd discovered it sooner! Super casual spot with delicious Indian food. We ordered the butter chicken, some naan, rice and onion bhaji which was all excellent but the salmon was stand out! ... dog friendly too!

Really enjoyed some food and a couple of pints here on my birthday (December 23). It's an amazing place - I mean I love my Yard Sale Pizza as much as the next guy and applaud their ubiquity but this is genuine Indian food (which, for me, still represents a welcome change). Awesome beer and really comfortable interior. A top place.

As soon as we walked in we were greeted with such a lush smell - a smokey, seasoned tandoori/ BBQ type smell. It made us even more excited for our Sunday roast. I was torn between regular half chicken, the pork loin or the tandoori chicken roast. In the end, after a chat with our waiter, I went for the tandoori chicken roast. He said it was the most popular choice, also I thought I might as well - it’s not the usual thing to have with a Sunday roast, might as well make the most of it. I did not regret it. Everything was great. Very tasty. It arrived quickly. The portion size was generous. We defo enjoyed our meal! My highlights were the chicken, the cauliflower cheese and the rich gravy. Even our Aperol spritzes were well made. The pub was spacious, high ceilings, gorgeous windows. A really nice space on the high street. The only thing that could’ve made it better was if the front door wasn’t left open, the cold breeze meant we ate with our jackets on. We’ll defo go back again, but in the summer!

Hands down the best Sunday roast I've had at a pub in quite a while! The pork was delicious and the roast potatoes were perfect. All the vegetables were well- seasoned and there was enough gravy to cover the whole plate, including the massive Yorkshire pudding and soften the pork crackling. Everything was tasty and I'm looking forward to trying a different roast next time :)

Yelp
I decided to come by here on my recent whirlwind 3 night trip to London in December, just because they had a vegetarian (and, sometimes) vegan option for their Sunday roast dinners. I was a little confused by their ordering process, not realizing that you had to go up to the bar to place your food orders, which the waitstaff will then bring to your table. Being a bar and all, they had an impressive selection of beers and ciders, and, if I can recall correctly, at least 5 different types of roasts available for dinner. I opted for their vegetarian roast, which consisted of some sort of soy and carrot mixture. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect a Sunday roast to be, but after getting my food, I immediately realized that it was like a Thanksgiving day meal back home in the states. I had roasted potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce with my veggie roast, which are pretty standard to a Thanksgiving day meal. The Yorkshire puddings, however, was what made it distinctly English. It's a bit out of the way from Central London, but I think this place is worth visiting if you're hankering for some sort of Sunday roast. Fun, friendly staff in a divey kind of bar setting. Prices were also reasonable and the portions were huge. All the right components for a good meal and dining experience, if you ask me.

Yelp
Another food on my British bucket list was a Sunday roast, but most places that offered this were charging exorbitant prices. I found this place after researching about it a little and saw that it was a nice little pub that I could walk into, grab a drink, and eat some good roast. Sadly, the food itself was a little lackluster. I got the traditional prime rib roast, which was served with roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables, and a Yorkshire pudding. Everything was drowned in a brown gravy, which made it difficult to taste the flavor of the individual ingredients. I would ask for it on the side so that you can add as much to your liking. Regardless, I loved the roast beef and the potatoes, especially when paired with their horseradish. The biggest disappointment of my meal was the Yorkshire pudding. I don't know anything about Yorkshire pudding, but I was expecting something fluffier and moist. This was just dry, bland, and had the texture of cardboard. The biggest saving grace to my meal was the sticky toffee pudding. I think the word "pudding" deceived me because pudding in America refers to a soft and creamy dessert while in London I think it means more bread-like. This sticky toffee pudding was basically a warm cake covered in caramel sauce and served with ice cream. It was a great end to a sub-par meal. The service was extremely friendly, and the staff went out of their way to make sure that I was happy and attended to. Sadly, the food left a little bit to be desired, so if I ever come back to London, I'll be searching elsewhere for my Sunday roast. PS: Make sure to place your order at the counter

Yelp
A long long time ago I used to live in Stoke Newington. There is still something special about this area despite the signs of gentrification and The Jolly Butchers seems to retain all that is best about Stokey. They probably didn't sell any food in the old days and I've yet to taste more than their chips (yummy fat ones), but the idea of a traditional Sunday roast here surely appeals. In the meantime, it's my favourite destination for a quick drink or ten after meetings in the area. They have a good range of proper beers on tap, but what makes me happiest is their rather more-ish Malbec. You don't often get to order wine this good by the glass. Gentle journey back on the 73 bus - one of the few things that hasn't changed.

Yelp
My first time here and it was bloody worth the wait. Friends recommended it, so we came with a big group and big tummies for Sunday Roast. Recommend calling ahead to book a table. We got our big group in easily and it was really fun. I got the lamb shank roast, which was ginormous! Was very full after. Started with a Bloody Mary, which was thick and very spicy. Wasn't the best ever but did its job. I then got a pale ale, which was good. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious with salted caramel ice cream! Will definitely be back. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This pub is really good for a proper Sunday roast but even better than their roast is their pork belly. Tender, juicy, crispy and perfect for a late lunch with a pint. They also have specials that are always on point! If you're in Stoke Newington, just go there!

Yelp
I was told that you have to try a proper British Sunday roast at least once. Well, I love trying new things, so I was more than happy to go to this place for lunch last Sunday. Our group of 5 arrived shortly after 2 pm and we were lucky to snatch the last available table cause the place was quite busy. All of us went with a Sunday roast option - I had the prime rip roast. I was unsure what to expect in terms of the quantity, but as it turns out, you get one nicely filled plate with meat, veggies, potatoes and "bread". My order consisted of a couple of pieces of well cooked prime rib, green beans, carrots and red cabbage, a few pieces of potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and plenty of sauce. I was not a big fan of the Yorkshire pudding bread thing, but the rest was quite tasty. The plates of my dining companions who chose chicken or lamb instead of prime rib looked equally delicious. A few notes: Reservations are recommended on the weekend. For kids, they offer a smaller portion of the Sunday roast. You order and pay drinks as well as food at the counter, but they will bring you the meal to the table (it took just 10 minutes for our food to arrive). Their focus is on beer when it comes to drinks, but their Chardonnay is quite tasty as well. Thumbs up for Jolly Butchers. :)

Yelp
The Jolly Butchers would be perfectly at home if someone plucked it from the busy streets of Stoke Newington and plopped it back down in Santa Monica, California, somewhere between The Library Alehouse and Father's Office. This is more beer bar than pub -- which is not a bad thing -- with a young and vibrant crowd filling the clean, modern interior with a definite buzz. The selection of English craft brews is good, and The Jolly Butchers boasts a very good selection of international beers both on draught (e.g., Mort Subite Kriek and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) and in the bottle (e.g., Brooklyn Brewery and Flying Dog). (Might there be a Stone or Russian River or Lagunitas beer pouring here in the near future? We California expats can only hope.) The servers knew their beers and seemed genuinely excited about them. Along with The Southampton Arms, one of my favorite pubs in North London.

Yelp
Food is phenomenal. I had the crispy pork belly, with mashed potatoes, gravy. Spinach, and apple sauce. Along with a cider. Mm highly recommend! I bet they do a fab Sunday roast.

Yelp
We were out on a Saturday afternoon walk enjoying the Not Rain weather when we reached the end of Church Street. Hmm. Yelp told us to check this place out, so we figured we would stop in for a pint. We are already excited to go back. The staff is lovely and the beer selection made me feel like I still believed in Santa Claus. Haven't had the food yet, but it was Su h a comfortable pub that felt both modern and familiar.

Yelp
I've walked by many times but it always seemed like any other pub (though more packed than most). But after sneaking out of work early on a rainy afternoon, I finally stopped in and was amazed by the beer selection on tap. Then I sat down and was even more amazed by the beer selection on the menu. They have beers from Colorado, for example (Ska and Odells) which I've never seen outside of the state, let alone N16 London! Ska is a tiny brewery in a tiny town in the Rocky Mountains, run by stoners (who I grew up with). Someone at the Jolly Butchers is seriously obsessed with finding hidden gems. As such, I'm going to spend a lot more time (and money) there.

Yelp
Stellar beer selection - and no Stella in sight. The Jolly Butcher is Stokey's #1 destination for real ales, ciders and microbrews, with about 20 taps and more rotations than the 2012 QPR team. If variety of origin, taste and percent are what you're after with you beer then the Jolly Butcher delivers with bells on. From local masterpieces like Hopspur from Tottenham's Redemption Brewery to US imports, wine and even hot mulled cider in winter - there's something for everyone. Our group of 11 was equally diverse in age, origin and taste but everyone drank happy. Also worth a mention is the great kitchen. Lamb chops, the burger and bangers and mash all satisfied us very well and with average prices at 10 or 11 pounds it's just about right for a pub like this.

Yelp
Popped over on a Sunday because I was craving some Sunday Roast (seriously one of my favourite things about living in London), and found the place super busy and every seat taken. After circling the pub (yes, very vulture like), we snagged a table as a couple was leaving. They have a great selection of drinks - we went with a couple of ciders, and the Sunday roast is good (under £11). Definitely looking forward to spending more Sundays here!

April K.

Yelp
My favorite place to go after a Chelsea match! Good people, good drinks, good atmosphere, and always a good time. The bar tenders are at tentative too which sometimes can be a hard thing to find. They also have a decent selection of beers. I have not yet tried the food but you can be I will be going back some time in the very near future!

Terri C.

Yelp
We made specific plans to check this out for the beer selection, and decided to do Sunday roast there as well. It was very crowded, but the manager? owner? took us right in hand and got us seated immediately. The beers were amazing and varied! If you get a chance try the Beaverton Smogrocket Smoked Porter, yum. The beef roast was delicious and perfectly done, although the potatoes could have been better...pale white, more boiled than roasted. Get some brown on those spuds, chef! The broccoli was also undercooked. Sticky toffee pud was as you would expect, nice, sticky and tasty with a generous side of custard to pour over. Went great with the porter. Wait staff was pleasant, knowledgable and quick, considering how busy they are on Sundays. Definitely will be returning next time in London!

Yelp
great pub in stoke newington. really busy on a saturday afternoon but managed to get a table. Staff know their beers which is nice when you want to try something new. the sausage platter won me over. nothing goes better with a few good beers than a plate of sausages served with bread and mustard.

Chris F.

Yelp
A pub run by friendly people who love real ale. They always have a great selection of real ale from different (but all great) breweries. They seem to like Thornbridge and I tend to go for them first myself! I am a big fan of the brewery so seeing a pub stock them says to me they know their good beers. They also have various brews from breweries closer to London, from which they seem to have made a very discerning selection..I take my hat off to them! If you prefer your beer colder their Keg selection may even outdo the ale choices! Sometimes I go for something from there myself but they have too much choice! Even if I only had a half of everything I wanted I'd end up way beyond my limit! The food looks appealing but I haven't managed to try it yet My favourite pub in London? Maybe? Easily one of my top five!

Yelp
Great real ale pub on the corner of Stoke Newington High Street and Church Street. The beer selection seems to vary week by week each time I pop in (and is always excellent and varied, with e.g. a Brewdog here, a Camden Brewery or London Fields Brewery there, plus a lot of international (American, Belgian) beers). The atmosphere is laid back and there is no music to get in the way of appreciating your beer! The food is just as good: their sausage platter is a must. Costs the same a single meal but will easily feed at least two if not three, and the sausage is as good as any i've had outside of Germany. I have heard complaints that if you sit near the open kitchen then you will come away smelling of fried food though, so beware.. Only real problem aside from that is its a relatively small place, and its popularity means that you will struggle to get a seat on a weekend and even some week days. If you are planning on eating I would recommend ringing up a day or two in advance and they will be happy to reserve a table for you.

Ashley V.

Yelp
Get the sausage sharing plate. You will thank me later. Matter of fact take me with you. And wash it down with a Bavarian wheat beer. In a giant stein. do it. Otherwise there's a large selection of beers regularly rotating to try as well. And the bartenders are fairly knowledgeable with their stock and can help select options to try if you want to do some exploring. It can get a bit crowded at times but it's worth it.

Yelp
We bumped into Jolly Butchers by accident but I soon realised this place is one of those special places where to come back and again. First of all, it has something very few places can boast; you can drink coffee AND beer. Great for morning boozers and evening coffeholics like me. Yes, the coffee is filter American style but is cheap and you get milk and sugar in jugs which make it homey. Beers, the lot. All sorts of colours, which I guess is good if you are after variety.

Yelp
I haven't felt this dreadful after three pints for a long time. Next time somebody tells me This really is lethal about a drink, I will listen attentively, rather than merrily going Yeah, whatever. The Jolly Butcher has a fantastic array of beers, stouts and the deathly drinks cider. I tried the scrumpy (delicious) and the perry (delicious, but utterly evil) and the knowledgeable and lovely staff let me try a morsel of both beforehand to pick what I wanted to try. It's a beautifully-decorated pub with lovely detail; from the bird taps in the loos, to the Victoriana wall prints. The staff were all efficient, friendly and helpful, and the punters were as jolly as the pub's name deserves. I didn't eat (probably half the problem) but the portions of food that came to our table were very generous and by all account delicious. Definitely worth visiting if you're in Stokey.

Qype User (beardy…)

Yelp
Newly reopened as a real ale pub, 7 beers, a cider and a perry, 5 Belgians too. Unfortunately the music does the pub no favours, so it gets marked down. Good choice of ales, 2 Dark Star, 2 Thornbridge, Brewers Gold, Brodies Mild and Redemption Urban Dusk. The Brewers Gold was particularily good. The Jaipur IPA was dangerous.... Some soft furnishing would deaden the noise. Why do people think ''noise'' is necessary?

Arron S.

Yelp
Fantastic beer guaranteed. The food is also ace. My only niggle is it's now too busy anywhere near a weekend to have a quiet pint. But respect to this pub, one of the finest beer selections I've ever seen. Constantly changing beers brings a bit of variety to life. Now please don't go there so I can be guaranteed a seat!

Leighton S.

Yelp
Solid pub overall. I visited on a Friday night and the place was packed. The pub was in the midst of a London Beer Week so most of the pumps were occupied by London breweries: Meantime, Camden, Redemption. I tried a few beers. They were each in good shape and the prices were pretty fair. Other draft options included Chimay, BrewDog and Mort Subite, as well as some nice bottles including Kernel Brewery. The decor was hip and clean, as was most of the clientele. Would like to visit this spot again.

Bryan K.

Yelp
The beer is great, the staff is knowledgable and friendly, the food is delicious, the portions are massive. Can be quite crowded but the crowd is nice!

Qype User (grumps…)

Yelp
Ok it's growing on me, still full of people with fake glasses tho.

Jessica O.

Yelp
Our favourite local, I adore the Butchers so much that I even brought them a box of choccies on Christmas Day. Fantastic craft beer and a great atmosphere - as well as affordable roasts.

Melanie H.

Yelp
Nice dog friendly pub in Stoke Newington with extensive world beer selection. Food was nice, the only problem was the service was slow and we all ended up being served our meals at different times.

Katy M.

Yelp
Nice pub with loads of traditional ales, although it does get VERY busy and you may end up standing if you're not there early on a weekend evening or early enough for a Sunday roast!

Douglas R.

Yelp
Really friendly atmosphere , fine selection of craft beers and really good food only problem was the three of us who were eating got our meals at different times, would definitely go back.
