"So, what's the story with this one?Built in 1927, this much-loved Portland landmark, elevated to international stardom by its cameo in the steamy 2011 bestseller 50 Shades of Grey, got a fashionable face lift earlier this year, and those used to its old-money library looks will either love or hate the 10-story historic hotel’s bright and stylish refresh. What hasn’t changed are the opulently costumed doormen, prime downtown location (next door to the popular Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall), and luxe downstairs tea court. After a day of shopping, museum-hopping, or hiking in nearby Washington Park, pluck a good book off the lobby library shelf, grab a glass of wine, and secure a spot on the blue velvet sofa by the fireplace. Who's staying here?Weekend wanderers, wedding parties, honeymooners, and the occasional 50 Shades of Grey superfans. Tell us everything about the rooms. The 151 guest rooms are beautifully done in white, gray, and sea blues, with bright white wooden wall panels at the head of each bed, elegant bar carts, plump cozy chaises, pretty blue-and-white patterned throws, and locally produced Water Avenue Coffee and Steven Smith teas. If you want space to spread out, book a Corner King Room; it's nearly 500 square feet, with a leather lounger in the sitting area and plenty of natural light. Any stand-out features or services? The all-local honor bar sports wee bottles of Burnside Bourbon, fig vinegar sourced from Red Ridge Farms in the Willamette Valley, and Sourdough and Olive Oil bars by Portland chef turned chocolatier David Briggs of Xocolatl de Davíd. Feel like a pint of Salt & Straw’s Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons in bed? Whether it’s 9 p.m. or 9 a.m., room service will deliver it with a spoon—and a smile. What's the deal with food and drink?Upon check-in, choose a pint of Oregon craft beer or glass of wine, and mark your calendar for 5 p.m., when the hotel hosts a complimentary spirits hour featuring a craft cocktail of the day. Since you're perfectly placed in the center of one of the most exciting food cities in the country, plan on getting out and about come mealtime; farm-to-table favorite Higgins is two blocks up Broadway, esteemed Japanese chef Naoko Tamura's Shizuku is a short stroll, and the Saturday morning Portland Farmers Market at nearby Portland State University is just the place for a hot and hearty breakfast and edible souvenir shopping. Any thoughts about the hotel's facilities? You’ll be eating well and often during your Portland stay, so best take advantage of the hotel’s small but mighty gym, with its mini rock-climbing wall, punching bag, and live-streaming Peloton bikes. If leaving the room isn’t part of your workout, order a Well+Fit kit, equipped with a Manduka yoga mat, barre3 bands, weights and core ball, and workout-video loaded iPad. The hotel also has discounted and complimentary passes to local fitness studios; just stop by the front desk. What's the bottom line? The Heathman is a fresh-faced piece of authentic Portland history with the perfect downtown location, lots of local amenities, and the library of your dreams." - Jen Stevenson

"Don’t let Portland ’s low-key, outdoorsy-hipster vibe fool you: the Heathman Hotel is as grown-up and refined as they come. Opened in 1927 as an expansion of one of the city’s grande dame hotels, the Heathman continues to set the standard for classic luxury in the City of Roses. Rather than rest on its laurels, though, the hotel has consistently upped the ante, collecting a museum-worthy array of modern art (including a handful of Warhols alongside works by acclaimed local artists), boasting one of the most impressive collections of autographed books in the world, and offering guests a choice of mattress in the sumptuous rooms. Indeed, so famously decadent and romantic is the Heathman, with its award-winning restaurant and almost-nightly live jazz in the bar, that it was used as the setting for several of the rendezvous in E.L. James’ infamous Fifty Shades of Grey —although, for most guests, the original crystal chandeliers and marble fireplaces inspire magic enough."

The room and hallway temps were a little cool. Also, the shower hot water never really got all the warm. I'm guessing that you're tring to save energy? Domestic Water $$'s are driven by demand, i.e. the more hot water you use the higher the cost.

The place is ok, nothing fancy. But everything is clean and nice. I rarely give 5 stars, but in this case the customer service was perfect. Good employees are always nice and friendly, ready to help you. The price is fair and the placement is convenient. I went for business and my employer paid for it. I asked them to rebook this Hotel in future visits.

We had a wonderful mini staycation downtown Portland. Our stay at the Heathman was excellent and a perfect location for us! A couple of things we did in Portland was hanging out in the Heathman library, drinks at the Benson lobby decorated for the holidays, a walk through Pioneer Square, shopping, an Uber over to Piattino's for a great meal. Highly recommend downtown staycations to support Portland's resurgence - and of course for spending some special time to a special person!

Nice location, great helpful staff, smallish rooms. Note that if you are planning to work in your room during your stay you have to request a desk. The resort fees for what essentially should be truly complementary items are excessive (they can amount to a 50 - 60% surcharge on your room)

Google
Positive: the location and cleanliness Negative: they only had one coffee pot and it was empty both days i came down to use it as was the water dispenser in the library area. It was great coffee (Stumptown) when it was filled!

Overall, our stay here was fine. It’s clean, updated enough to feel fresh, the staff was nice and the beds were comfortable. I wouldn’t choose to stay here again though, mostly because the curtains in the rooms don’t keep the light out. After flying across the country, literally from the east coast, and getting in at 3am EST, I really wanted to sleep in. I wasn’t able to though because the sun blasted me right in the face at the crack of dawn. The curtains have a huge gap between the end of the rod and the wall, so it’s not possible to close them all the way. Additionally, the televisions are old. It’s 2024 and this hotel is marketed as a “luxury” hotel. I at least expected a smart tv. They’re cheap these days, so it was surprising that the technology was so outdated. The shower had a nice clean shower head, but the water pressure was poor. The most frustrating thing was the “amenity fee” … we paid $67 for amenities that we didn’t even use. Amenities like the fitness center which I didn’t use, coffee that I didn’t drink (I hate coffee), bike rentals that I didn’t use, in room pet treats that I didn’t need because I didn’t have a pet with me, access to the library that I didn’t use, 10% off the Tavern Restaurant that I didn’t eat at and wifi which I also didn’t use. Seemed odd to be “nickeled and dimed” for a list of things that I didn’t need. Was honestly disappointing. Some of these amenities were listed as “complementary” despite the fact that guests are forced to pay for them. It’s not complementary if I have to purchase it. The staff honestly was extremely nice. If I could have actually slept and wasn’t charged for a bunch of stuff I didn’t use, I’d probably return. Everything else was fine.

A lot of what I'm going to write will probably sound nitpicky but keep in mind the Heathman is supposedly one of the nicest hotels in Portland with an incredible reputation. These are not things that should happen in this kind of a hotel. In short, I would recommend staying at the Governor (now the Sentinel) or the Benson over the Heathman. 1. The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on. I don't really like hard mattresses but I can usually deal. This was the flattest, hardest mattress in the world. I've slept in Holiday Inn Express beds that were more comfortable. 2. The room really wasn't that nice for the price. It was small, the chaise was cute but not really practical to sit on. There were chunks in the wall where they hadn't bothered to fill in holes after they moved the toilet roll. The furniture had bent legs in some places. So my luggage slipped right off, that was fun. 3. The mini bar wasn't fully stocked. Which was kind of fine until I found out that the way they charge for the mini bar was housekeeping counting the items after check out. The person at checkout didn't really seem to understand why I was so annoyed. (I barely slept in an overpriced shabby room to start.) I mean sure, it's not going to break the bank but I'd rather not get charged for things we didn't eat or drink after someone didn't stock completely. It's worth noting, we didn't even check in early or on time. We were like 40 minutes late. 4. How THE HELL are you supposed to order room service? Instead of a useful little book of things you can do, like how to order in room service from the hotel restaurant/bar, there was a book on plants and and a Portland magazine. The Portland magazine may have been useful but um, literally where was anything relevant to the hotel services and its 4 stars? Oh and a list of food carts that were probably closed. I scanned the QR code by the TV and it popped up with the menu from the restaurant and a pop up that asked me to "book now" for either the hotel or restaurant. The menu wasn't formatted for mobile. It wasn't easy to make restaurant reservations. 5. The TV was old so if you wanted something in the background you were stuck with basic, basic cable or an HDMI cable to use the TV as a monitor. You couldn't sign into Hulu, you couldn't cast to it with other Samsung devices or Windows... The pros: 1. Ok pillows 2. Location 3. Nice check in staff 4. Very good soundproofing All of this was highly disappointing for what's supposedly one of the oldest and most prestigious hotels in Portland. I had to travel to Eagle, Idaho last year for work and I stayed in a Hilton Garden Inn and it was better in every single way. Actually in comparison to every single room I've stayed in over the last couple years for work travel or leisure trips - this was the worst of them. I'm staying at the Atomic hotel in Astoria next month - I'll bet it's better. Overall I was just really disappointed. It seems like it's coasting off its reputation and location. Any attention to detail in the rooms and service has been totally lost. If you want some old Portland charm - definitely choose the Sentinel or the Benson.

First, I am from Portland. I live here, but I have on occasion stayed at the Heathman to attend a show or have a staycation over the years. I have recommended out of town friends here. So imagine my surprise to be wiring this negative review. I was charged for my room twice plus a $100 security deposit + resort fee. I had a ticket to see a show at Newmark, and I was coming back to PDX from a trip. I booked a last minute room so I could quickly check in and go to the show. I paid for the room through Expedia. When I got to the hotel, I was in such a rush. I gave the front desk gal my credit card I used to book the room. There was enough on the card to cover the resort fee and incidentals. She told me my card was declined. I was so embarrassed but I was in a huge hurry so I gave her my debit card and then ran to the show. Later I realized she charged me the cost of the room, security and resort fee. I brought this up two separate times to the front desk and they never apologized or explained why this happened. They just said I would EVENTUALLY be refunded. It was a debit card. That is cash that is being held pending for something I already paid for and they can't tell me for how long. When I got back from the show my key card didn't work in the elevator and another guest told me she wouldn't get in iif my card didn't work. Again, super embarrassing. The room was ok. I didn't stay but 10 hours tops in it so I can't really give it a good review. The shampoo in the shower was weird and I thought it was pretty silly to charge for coffee to use in your room. Again, I am from Portland and I have stayed here several times over the years. I travel a lot and I have never been treated so bizarrely. I won't be recommending The Heathman to friend and family again. Let's see how long it will take to get my money back.

Yelp
Went to the restaurant after theatre. Busy! Great sever Sam... we had a wonderful time.

Yelp
Great little boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Portland. Wonderful vibe, friendly staff, and an enjoyable setting in a Harry Potter-esque lobby area with a nice, warm fireplace. The restaurant in my opinion is just okay, food is nothing great, but the manager told me they are working to revive the menu. My only (and biggest) grip is that in the quiet, peaceful mornings, between 7am & 9am, when people are just getting their day started, relaxing and having morning coffee and/or breakfast in the wonderful lobby area, every single day we have to endure a vacuum cleaner loudly going about, ignoring the fact that people are trying to talk or do business. It is loud, and disturbing. Every day. Oy! - Perhaps vacuuming when everyone is tucked in bed would be a better option.

Yelp
This beautiful Portland hotel is a local historical place. I remember clearly having a drink here back in 2012, the first time we visited Portland. It seemed stuffier then. Now it feels cozy, fun, upscale and warm. I LOVE the library. It's gorgeous and we'll I absolutely LOVE a library and a book ladder so that won me over. The staff was very friendly in every interaction we had with them. Our room was very small but comfortable. The bed was quite hard for my preference and I didn't sleep well either as I hate down pillows but it was quiet until the morning when our "neighbor" woke me because they were enjoying one another lol I did wake up one other time when the AC/heat kicked on as it was loud and a bit thumpy at first. The shower though was really nice. I really liked the water pressure and warmth and steaminess that happened because I enjoy a hot shower was also lovely. I would definitely come back but maybe bring my earplugs (my fault for forgetting them,) and pillows.

Yelp
We've stayed at this hotel twice. I did my online booking and my boyfriend did his. Please be mindful if you're paying in the booking app- you'll pay the resort fee but when my boyfriend booked he was charged twice and one with the resort fee & one without. He spoke to a gal this morning and the second amount would be returned in 2-3 business days. Just be mindful. Overall the hotel is pretty nice. We've had rooms 909 & 902. 909 windows can open and 902 can't... not sure why. I don't recommend purchasing anything from their bar inside your room. Your best bet is to purchase items outside the hotel based on the up hike. Snickers $5 lol you can find that much cheaper. Valet Parking is $55 max I would recommend parking directly across the street as it's only $8 total for the entire night. Valet is nice- our first trip we had Steven working. At the time he was the only one working and he managed. The hotel wasn't as busy though Xmas Eve. New Years they had quite a lot of people but about 3 valet guys working. The Rooms- both rooms are pretty decent. One was ADA- which is a good room. They have sliding doors in the ADA room and it's larger for the purpose of being ADA compliant. Regular King room is nice. The tv is kinda far from the bed. The library is pretty nice. The restaurant overflows into that as well. There are books and games for adults and some kids. Kids- it was just us but the hotel would be fine for kids: the rooms are very modern and minimalist so you won't find your kid breaking anything which is nice. Overall it's pretty nice. I'd recommend it. Just again be mindful about the booking and charges. & the Booking app isn't responsible for the hiccup. It was the gal working the front- we explained we had been charged already and showed her... she still felt the need to do it again. The morning gal was helpful.

Yelp
Once we finally got the attention of the valet gents, things went pretty smoothly. There is no parking to be found on the streets of the city. So plan on using valet. Our bags were loaded on a trolley. One of the valets escorted us to our room and unloaded it for us. The room was modern and luxurious. The bathroom had ~6 ounce containers of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. These are sold on the premises. My sole complaint is related to the style of bed, making utilized. The two flat sheets and the comforter are tucked in as one unit, so if one does not want the comforter, all the sheets become untucked. It makes for a messy bed if you don't like being swaddled. The library is charming. The artwork on the premises was fun to look at and read (as they all seem to have a message). The workout room is small. It has weights, a jump rope, stationary bikes, a mirror which shows you what to do (my friend really liked it). No pool nor saunas. There is a tavern which serves meals on the first floor. We were very impressed with the yogurt and granola that were made on the premises. Connie took care of us and is divine.

Jesy B.

Yelp
Nobody is wants to talk about the guest amenities fees up top? Okay I will! From their website: Guest Amenities Fee Your daily guest amenities fee of 29.00 USD plus tax includes bike rentals, in-room french press coffee and tea service, 5.00 USD F and B credit for lobby Honor Bar, shoe shine and steaming services. I'm sorry, are we in Vegas? I want NONE of those things. This just seems like a tack on charge to appear cheaper upfront but at the end it isn't. The hotel itself is cute and the room was okay. Minimal working space if you needed to use a laptop. Doors are thin. Also - doors LOCKED at night. Safety is obviously important but higher end hotels have keycard locks so you don't have to wait for the lone lobby clerk to notice you and eventually let you in. We do a lot of staycations downtown and wanted to branch out from the Hilton and, well, we have learned our lesson. The overall cost and inconvenience was not worth it.

Lisa A.

Yelp
Great stay! Wonderful hotel. Our room was beautiful. The staff was amazing and we enjoyed hanging out in the library. Very close to everything downtown. We also had breakfast in the Tavern. We loved our stay and will be back.

Stephanie V.

Yelp
The Heathman Hotel recently went through a redesign. While I like most of the design choices they made, I was not a fan of a painting in my room with a lot of big-eyed people. I just found it kind of creepy. My room was nice. The air-conditioning was quite loud, but I guess that's to be expected in an older building. The walk-in closet in my room was so large. It's honestly bigger than my closet at my house. So, I found it a little unnecessary. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice closet, I just felt the space could have been used better in the redesign. My favorite aspect of this hotel is the library. You can get breakfast and drinks there. I worked from the library for a few hours each day of my stay. I was in town visiting friends, but still needed to get some work done, so it was a nice way to start my morning to go downstairs and have a beautiful space to work and enjoy a coffee. There are also a lot of plugs to charge your devices too. Breakfast is also served at The Tavern. The hotel restaurant provides room service during the hours that the restaurant is open. I was reminded multiple times while ordering room service and when it arrived that 20% gratuity was already added to the order so I did not need to tip. I appreciated the reminders. Everyone I interacted with at the hotel was nice and helpful. One morning while I was working in the library, I went to lobby to get a glass of water. I noticed the water container was empty, didn't say thing to the front desk staff since they were helping someone check-in and went back to the library without any water. Moments later, the front desk staff was refilling the water in the lobby. So, they pretty attentive too.

Deborah L.

Yelp
This is the worse hotel. Do not valet park your car. For some reason I needed to ask some questions concerning valet, their experience and safety. I was assured that they had top quality drivers as well as a secured facility/garage to store my car in. Next morning ready for an appointment and the valet said please check your car and see if there's anything wrong with it. What?????????????? Due to this being in the hands of my attorneys.... No one was honest or forthright. The only way I found out what happened and the truth is because my 360 degree cameras caught it all in video. I had to give them my videos or the lies would have kept coming. Absolutely unbelievable and sad. If my windows were smashed that's one thing, but when you set my car up to be robbed that's a problem!!!

Tracy M.

Yelp
Very pleased with this boutique hotel and will certainly stay again. I walked-in to secure a 2-night stay last minute, and asked for the least expensive room option. Front Desk staff Emily and Cat graciously put me in a Queen; the room was small-ish yet super clean, well-appointed & a cozy vibe. The French Press coffee and tea service is lovely, everything operated/functioned just fine in my room; good water pressure, heat, etc. The bathroom (while small) was fantastic since everything was new & clean & shiny. No creepy "old hotel" situation. I enjoyed dinner snacks during their 4-6PM Classic Hour in the restaurant The Tavern. I did not park here so can't comment on that. The exercise facility was clean & a handy feature. Brendan & Brandon at the front desk & door were very gracious & engaging. As a single woman I felt fine walking around alone sightseeing during the day, and after dark there were quite a few restaurant & theater patrons also walking about.

Julia N.

Yelp
Had a group lunch in a private room that was close to abysmal. The space was freezing cold and the sandwiches felt like they'd been made days before - limp, uninspired and complete lackluster. Not the Heathman we all remember and would not come back

Jamie C.

Yelp
I have rarely, if ever, stayed at a hotel that I would return to. They're all just fine, good enough, or nothing stands out about them to remember that you've been there. While I'm a Portland native, I currently live in Seattle. As a native, the fun of Portland is never downtown, its really only on the east side, but this hotel is ideal for work trips. You don't need to book a we work, there is an enormous two floor library w a ton of tables and completely reliable wifi. If you need to run a virtual meeting they have room options for an hour or so that are worth the spend. The art throughout is gorgeous, you get a free beverage every evening and coffee in the AM--in your room or out--there is a little shop where you get credits for each nights stay to buy some treats, beverages, or local trinkets, + the front desk staff is amazing at any hour. Very friendly, conversational, and helpful when I was in a pinch for my phone cord that was left in the valet car. Remember to bring cash! It seems like no one has any on hand these days anymore. It's pretty close to downtown biz as well if you're coming for client meetings and some classical concert venues. Is downtown a place I love walking around? Absolutely not, but it's pretty central for daytime walking. Highly recommend. Oh also! The rooms don't have a ton of carpet or fabric furniture. When this wasn't totally removed from all hotels after covid I was shocked. No one wants to come home to something they didn't arrive with when fabrics aren't sanitized or steamed after each stay. 10/10, would return.

Sahara L.

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay here! At first we were skeptical as we have heard just how bad and unsafe Portland has gotten. After much consideration we made reservations and don't regret it. The hotel is beautiful and just so classy. We felt safe during our whole stay even in the nearby vicinity. We wouldn't recommend venturing out too if you are going to be walking. The library is amazing and inviting, you can read, drink coffee or just sit there and take it all in. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The coffee shop/candy store is pretty cool with great service. The only complaints we have are the service in the restaurant and the front desk could be better. The server at the restaurant forgot about us after awhile and the front desk members are cold and indifferent to customers. Besides this we loved everything else about it. We stay here again

Stefanie C.

Yelp
4.5 stars. I already know I'm coming back to this hotel. It's such a charming spot located right in the middle of Downtown Portland. I came here for work but felt a little under the weather, so I didn't get to explore Portland as much as I wanted to. The Heathman was a perfect work-cation spot with its stylish, comfy room (with separate sink and bathroom) and common space areas. I wish I spent more time checking out the library and taking advantage of the daily 4-drink happy hour (2 alcoholic and 2 NA beverages). Root Beer and Pinot Gris sound good right now. My only complaint is the 5:30am alarm set in my room by default. I thought it was my fault until I heard the alarm go off in the next room the following morning. No one was there, so it kept going off. It was a night I needed to sleep... annoyed. Anyways, I took an Uber to the hotel from the airport because parking Downtown is always a terrible idea. If you ever have the opportunity to stay here for a night or two, check it out! Portland is one of my favorite cities, and the Heathman just became one of the best, most memorable hotels I've ever stayed at. Love the generosity of the staff, including the snack credit, and close proximity to many other cool spots in the city.

David K.

Yelp
From the moment we were greeted by the doorman until we bid farewell to the front desk attendant, our experience at this hotel was nothing short of outstanding. It's rare to encounter a team so uniformly courteous, friendly, and accommodating, but this staff truly made our stay delightful. Cleanliness was evident throughout the hotel, and it was clear that meticulous attention is given to maintaining an impeccable environment. Among the hotel's charming features, the library stood out as a particularly enchanting space. With its cozy fireplace and inviting vibe, it provided the perfect corner to unwind after a day of exploring the city. Our corner king room was not just a room, but a haven of luxury. It boasted a gorgeous layout and the walk-in shower felt like a spa experience. A special shout-out to Nic Altomare, whose exceptional service and willingness to go above and beyond played a pivotal role in enhancing our stay. The location of the hotel is unbeatable, conveniently within walking distance to a myriad of great restaurants and must-visit spots, adding to the ease of our stay. Returning to a spotless and well-maintained room was always a pleasant end to our busy days.

Susan C.

Yelp
Classic accommodations, spacious rooms and now a restaurant is back on the premises. The vibe, the beds, the shower! 5 star! Definitely quite with great service. Looking forward to staying here again some day. Such a treat!

Justin F.

Yelp
There are so many people like me. I'm sure that is stuck in the Hilton and Marriott point trap. You don't realize it but everywhere you travel you will only stay somewhere where you get points but after two decades of this, I realized I'm missing out all local downtown vibes and experiences. I did some initial research and this hotel looked amazing and it exceeded my expectations! It had a fun Portland downtown vibe with a huge library and area to relax in. I didn't even realize it, but it was next to the Broadway as well. Parking was a little challenging at night to fine, but it was right across the street and it's not too bad. All the staff was extremely nice and helpful. I absolutely loved the books, library, fireplace. This is a place where you can just relax and feel at home. The room accommodations were spot on, and unlike Marriott and Hilton they clean my room with him one day, which they stopped doing at Hilton Marriott, so huge perk! I'm so glad I had this experience and I will continue to do it as well. The only negative aspect that I can think of that the management could work on was that if your flight gets in after 10 the front door is locked and you will need to use the doorbell to get in. Disgrace a problem if they don't hear the doorbell or if it's not working, etc. So far everyone's safety in just overall best experience, I recommend installing a door opener with your hotel key. All in all tonight at 10 Stars & Amazing place to stay!

Angela B.

Yelp
Their Afternoon Tea service is wonderful. A real treat for Tea aficionados. They had a nice combination of sweet and savory treats along with their scones and Double Devon Cream

Jessie M.

Yelp
I found bed bugs in my sheets and had hives every where for the whole time I stayed there when I asked for a room switch the said no and then said I would have to pay extra to switch rooms

Alexa D.

Yelp
Had a lovely stay! We were able to get a suite on booking.com at a huge discount because we booked last minute and it was lovely. The hotel itself is historic and gorgeous, feels very classy but comfortable at the same time. We were greeted with hard ciders at check in, which was a nice touch. Our room was HUGE and had two bathrooms, a giant tv, and beautiful art and furniture. I hardly wanted to leave! The gym is incredible as well and has two peleton bikes. We also found that most things we wanted to see in Portland were easily within walking distance. A few downsides-there is no parking included. Their valet is $50 per day and the parking options in the area have a 2 hour max or are super expensive. This was frustrating. Also, check in isn't until 4pm which is very late. We asked for early check in and we're told we could come at noon, but our room ended up being ready at 4 on the dot. I also saw a few homeless people in the lobby without masks on and the employees didn't do anything. Overall a lovely stay. Would be great for someone with no car who is eager to take advantage of the library and gym.

KC C.

Yelp
Another wonderful stay in Portland, but this time at a fancy boutique hotel. I had heard sooo many great things about this hotel (the hubby has stayed here for business purposes a few times), so when I had the opportunity to book a suite for just $275 out the door for two nights, I jumped on it. Upon arrival we were greeted by Brenden who was super nice and friendly. The room was ready early so we were able to check-in and freshen up before brunch. Brenden was also there when we checked out (12pm checkout time) and helped us with our luggage for storage. Brenden was very fast and efficient. The room was big, clean, and although no view of the city, it was quite alright bc we were next to another tall bldg. so there was no excess sun shining through in the early morning, and it was as quiet as can be. The hotel has a great gym. If I remember correctly there were two pelotons, three treadmills, two ellipticals, a rack of free weights and also space to do abs and other misc. things. The property itself is super nice and clean. This was prob one of the cleanest hotels I've stayed at. The only thing I wished they had was a BAR. I think they had one but closed it down a few years ago. I was prepared though. This girl packed some wine and mixers! We brought them to the lounge and drank there. The location of this hotel is also very good. We walked pretty much everywhere except for one dinner across town. Bonus - if you forget your umbrella, they have some in the room and at the front desk. Side notes: resort fees (or whatever they call it) is $33 a night. Didn't drive so I don't know what overnight parking costs.

Yelp
This is our go to Portland hotel. Always clean, staff always friendly, restaurant has a small but delicious selection. Favorite spot is in the library at the Heathman. Taking a hit cup of coffee and choosing a book .... Then loving the book ... been unable to finish the book... And having to walk down to Powells to buy the book so I can read the rest of it at home.

Yelp
NOT SAFE FOR FAMILIES And certainly not a 4 star hotel We will be traveling to Portland often for business and we're hoping to find a home hotel. Our biggest issue- the homeless man sleeping on the second floor, where the gym is located and my children are sleeping on the third floor. So much for the key card access only elevator. Insane to me. We travel often, have traveled all over the world, live in Houston and have never had a homeless man INSIDE let alone UPSTAIRS a claimed 4 star hotel. Now on to normal 4 star issues- the pull out couch for kids had no comforter and no pillows. The second day- cleaning service took towels and bath mat without replacing them. They left a single towel for a family of 4? We left them hanging, not on the floor. They didn't need to take them. We leave our room tidy, beds made, clothes in drawers. It didn't make sense. Two of the three mornings the lobby was out of coffee by 7:30 am? Single ply toilet paper- legit the airport had thicker paper. This is just not quality service and I'm shocked to see they are considered 4 stars, I assumed my husband booked incorrectly. Needless to say, we will be needing another hotel.

Yelp
What a beautiful hotel! Not a cookie-cutter hotel like a Hilton, this place is elegant yet has that rustic style. My room was AMAZING! Fireplace was perfect to warm the morning. Room, plus sitting area. Double shower heads. Soft comfy mattress. Also, they have an excellent restaurant for dining!! This is the ONLY hotel I'll stay at in the Vancouver/Portland area. You've got to stay here. My only regret is no breakfast. That's it! Other than that, it's totally perfect.

Yelp
Attention to detail was exceptional. Very clean, very professional and courteous. Rooms are elegant, clean and very updated decor. The inside library is very Peaceful and spacious. Thank you for the awesome stay. We will be back.

Yelp
This hotel is absolutely wonderful! The employees are all super attentive and very kind. It's only a short walk to Powell's Books. The library inside is absolutely gorgeous! We really wanted to explore the haunted side of it during our stay and were not at all disappointed, (being able to capture some ghost activity while staying on the 7th floor.) We would absolutely stay there again and definitely recommend it!

Yelp
Beautiful room, comfy beds, large bathrooms. Stayed in King corner bedroom which is pet-friendly for our doggie with nice street view. Located in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, walkable to Bluestar donuts, Powell bookstore, restaurants and shops. Valet at the front of the hotel @$50/night which is way more than what we expected. Valet service is great but with pricey valet it adds up to the cost of staying per night at the hotel.

Yelp
Very helpful and accommodating staff. Exceptionally clean with attractive decor. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return if back in Portland!

Yelp
We originally booked this hotel and when we arrived, every service like the restaurant was either not available or barebones. It was like a ghost town. (Also this was not stated at the time of our booking). We were pretty frustrated and found another hotel, The Nines, that was fully functional and wonderful. We spoke to the manager at The Heathman who was wonderful and acknowledge the situation was not ideal. She let us know that we would not be charged, so we went to stay at The Nines. Flash forward and we notice that the charge never came off our credit card. We emailed several times with no response, leading us to eventually call in. The person we spoke to claimed the manager didn't work there any more and didn't leave any notes. Though based on our emails and receipts (we provided all of our Nines receipts that showed hotel, dining, parking, etc charges) it was clear we didnt stay and she would be taking it to the manager and get back to us. We NEVER HEARD BACK despite emails and calls. So we're now our almost $1000 for a hotel we never stayed in. Do not give them your credit card details and go stay at The Nines or somewhere else.

Yelp
Excellent decision to stay in this hotel! It is very very nice, with many options, from a good coffee, a game of chess to a good book. Excellent atmosphere! But above all, great location! Perfect to go for a walk and see everything in downtown Portland!

Yelp
This hotel has a lot to boast about. It's within walking distance to many interesting sights. The staff especially both Brendan and Brandon were both excellent. Not sure if I could say the same for the female front staff since they didn't quite seem eager to help, nor did they seem happy to be there. I love the look and feel of this hotel. The only major complaint is: no microwave and not housekeeping over the weekend, which was a bummer since it's pricey and elegant.

Yelp
The staff is absolutely top notch. Everyone is incredibly nice and helpful. The rooms are a decent size and exceptionally clean (love that). Super disappointed they don't have a restaurant (anymore). Can't order room service or anything so that's kinda a bummer. But we did enjoy the complimentary beverages in the lobby during happy hour. Also no fan in they bathroom kinda sucks because the bathroom gets all steamy. But will say I felt exceptionally safe here and that was worth everything to me.

Yelp
Very lovely stay. The rooms are spacious and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We wanted to give special thanks to Dean who really helped us out during our stay!

Yelp
Stay away, there are better places to stay in Portland. Took over 2 hours to get extra towels sent to our room! Front desk staff are not customer service oriented. Keith the valet was the only person who was helpful and exceeded in customer service. Paid for late checkout and had my toddler woken up at noon by the manager who failed to see that we paid for late 2pm checkout and was not at all apologetic. Customer service is horrible and management is no help... Stay away!!!!

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely one-night stay here. The only downside was the ONE...would have preferred to spend a week in my corner suite. A large, spotless and beautifully-appointed space. Felt more luxurious than I expected at the moderate price. Friendly and efficient guest services. The lack of restaurant and on-site parking are a bit of a bummer...but not enough to impact my 5-star rating. I'll be back.

Yelp
Absolutely my very favorite hotel chain in Portland, Oregon. So far my very favorite is The Sentinel Hotel only because the rooms are a little bit larger and some rooms have fireplaces. However, The Heathman is by all means first class! Brandon & Daniel, staff, were incredible helpful. They have a library of 300+ books all signed by authors who have stayed at this fine hotel. Sweet, quaint, charming rooms with cool art AND they have FRENCH PRESSED coffee in the rooms! Attached to the hotel is thee most decadent gourmet chocolate store in all of Portland called "Azar Indulgences".". If you want a truly decadent chocolate experience visit the owner Christine who can educate you in there finest chocolates imported from other countries including Africa and Lebanon. Let Christine know you were referred by Gayle Slade with Urban~Diggs for an additional 10% off!

Yelp
We just stayed here for our anniversary in the studio suite. While it was fine, we were both extremely underwhelmed. I was very aware of the "amenities fee" but didn't realize that there were no amenities to go with the fee. There is no room service, no pool, and while they say they provide coffee, by 8:30 am both the coffee and cream were empty. My wife had to ask for it to be refilled, and once they got around to it, it was subpar and this being is a little generous. It's frustrating to pay $29/ night for nothing, but again, I expected it. In essence we paid $60 for crappy coffee, which we never tried after the first morning. By the time the charges rolled in, it was almost $900 for 2 nights and the room was $263.12/night, only $46.00 of this was for food. The fees felt very sketchy. $900 for a hotel without room service. I absolutely don't mind spending money when we get the experience that we think we are paying for, but the value for the dollar just wasn't there. I had made a very specific request by phone and also on the request form when booking for champagne on arrival for our anniversary, but this never happened. The room was very very warm. They did have air, and while it was working, it wasn't quite adequate for a warm day. We requested a fan, they weren't sure if they had one, but one quickly arrived to the room. The bathroom was extremely warm as was the area where the bed is located. We were still so warm even with the fan that we ultimately couldn't sleep in the same bed, and I slept on the sofa...for our anniversary. The pillows were very uncomfortable and felt cheap. I see people complain about the bathroom, but no complaints from us, we knew the bathroom would be tiny because it's a historic hotel, so it meet our expectation. I appreciated the original art work in the room, but the booger on the wall that has gone unnoticed was gross. We asked how to get the fridge to work, we were told to fill it up and it would chill. We filled it, and 2 days later it never chilled. The closet door was off the track, and while I normally would have just fixed this myself, I didn't since I'm recovering from a hand injury. It rendered the closet fairly useless. Now the front desk. They were not rude, but there was nothing warm and welcoming about them, we felt as if we were bothering them. However, the valets were great. They were very welcoming and brought our vehicle quickly each time. I didn't find the parking fee to be out of line for valet parking downtown, it seemed acceptable at $55/night. If I had to look for positives, the check in process was smooth, the room was clean (minus the booger), the robes were clean, fresh and comfy, the artwork was great, and the valet service did a great job. That's about it. We won't stay here again. At one point in my life I traveled for a living and have stayed in some of the finest hotels around the world. I have been wowed before, and have stayed in a few places where I didn't have any desire to leave the room. I didn't arrive expecting to be wowed, but I did hope for more than what we received. I have to say that I wouldn't recommend the Heathman. Portland has other very great options, and I encourage you to look at other hotels. The Heathman is not the worst hotel that I have stayed in, but I certainly expected more from this experience than we received.

Yelp
The Heathman hotel was an underwhelming one night stay. We had left Seattle a day earlier than planned to spend another night in Portland to stay in a "nice" hotel. Upon check in, the front desk informed us about our room number and pointed us to the elevator. No details were given about any amenities other than the fact that we were entitled to a $5 food credit from the lobby snack bar. Where was our welcome beverage that was advertised? Where was the information about the wifi or any other amenities (even if currently suspended)? We arrived to the room which was clean and tidy to be perplexed about the layout. For business travelers, please note that the queen room does not offer a working space: you can either situate yourself on the bed or try to balance your laptop in an arm chair. You can see in the photos that the set up was just bizarre: a chair in front of the closet that had to be moved in order to be able to access the closet, a TV placed on top of a cabinet that faced away from the bed. The tv swiveled, but given the set up, it couldn't swivel enough to be angled in a way that one could watch it from the bed. Lastly, the shower requires about 5 minutes to warm up the water. Maybe the older building has something to do with this? I believe the amenity fee is $30 which is honestly quite the insult when the offerings were non-existent during our stay. With so many nice hotels in the area, it was a shame we landed on this one that made for a lackluster final night in PDX.

Yelp
This hotel was a terrible disappointment. Rooms are okay though nothing special, and small. Beautiful library with many signed books. But service was terrible, with a rude front desk staff and an overpriced valet that kept us waiting 35 minutes for our car.

M C.

Yelp
Solid two stars. Some of the staff are very rude, others helpful and courteous. Housekeeping skipped my room. The coffee in the room is soooo bad, it seems like it is five years old. Coffee in the lobby isn't much better. The bedding has no actual fitted sheet or cover for the comforter, kind of gross. Not super clean. Room service food from the restaurant was really bad. I wouldn't stay here again.

Aj A.

Yelp
Overall, the rooms and lobby/library of the hotel was nice. The attendant at the front desk wasn't transparent about the additional fees that they charge. There's an additional fee when you arrive to check in and they failed to mention valet parking is $55 per night. The Heathman needs to be more transparent about the total cost during booking.

Yelp
This used to be a wonderful venue to host events, but my experience has been far less than stellar. I host over 40 events a year and have never had this level of miscommunication, confusion and the worst aggressive attempts to upsell. I almost feel bullied and my simple request to honor budget ignored. Had they made any effort to create an experience vs aggressively demand upcharges, I would happily spend more money but they have taken all the fun out of planning my opening party for my organization. I most definitely will not be returning.

Yelp
I flew into Portland to attend the performance of Carmina Burana by the Oregon Symphony. I made reservations for Saturday and Sunday night (2/26-2/27). I called the hotel around 2:30pm to ask about a possible early check-in and was told they couldn't find my reservation. I gave them my confirmation number and was told that I had canceled my reservation due to the snow that seemed to overwhelm the city. I stated that I had not canceled my reservation and asked if they had another room available. I was told no but they said they would check with the manager and call me back. I verified my phone number and waited. Although I didn't hear back immediately, I was able to obtain help from Sanford Fibish, the Front Office Manager who was able to resolve this situation to my satisfaction. As a result of his great customer service, the rating for this hotel has improved significantly and I have hope that the Heathman Hotel is returning to its pre-pandemic greatness!

Yelp
As I write this there is hammering and sawing going on. The Heathman is undergoing a renovation. I frequently visited the Heathman when I attended concerts at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. I had enjoyed the plush bedding, the look and feel of the hotel, and the spectacular service. I used to rave about this hotel to everyone I knew. Sure, a little pricey but the location was the best. Late last year I stayed at The Heathman and noticed that something was amiss. The level of customer service was rather weak. I was attending for a wedding, and while I personally had no problems, the wedding party experienced only problems, but I figured perhaps it was just an off-weekend for the typically stellar Heathman. This past weekend, though, has led me to rethink returning to The Heathman again. First, the good. The valet service is still top notch. The drivers took care of my car and were very prompt and polite the entire time I was there. When I called for my car it was at the door by the time I arrived. The free drink upon arrival was a nice touch. My friend rather enjoyed his beer. The welcome card with the free bottle of Voss and a small bag of Poplandia Popcorn was an unexpected surprise. It did make me feel welcomed. The renovations are going well. I enjoyed the brighter feel to the hotel. Gone are the yellow, gold, and brown tones replaced by blue, white, and light grey. While I thought the wood tones matched the library theme a bit better, I trust the Heathman will integrate their fantastic library when the remodel reaches the lobby. Now, the bad. The first morning upon using the shower rust specs came out when the water was first turned on. I am not sure if this was because of the construction or what, but it was rather unexpected and unwanted. The water also was extremely fickle. It took some care to get it to be warm enough without it being scalding hot. The bed was atrocious. Heathman, where went your wonderful pillow top soft lovely beds? Every morning I woke up with a sore back because the bed was just not comfortable. Along with the three sheets I also found it to be particularly cold. Then came the billing. Originally my friend booked a night and then realized five minutes after booking the room that we needed another night. So, he called and asked to add a night. They could not add another night to the existing reservation and instead insisted that they had to create a new reservation for one night. Didn't really think anything of it, just wanted to stay there two nights. We had checked our credit cards on the second day there and noticed that my credit card had been charged over $200 more than his. When I called to inquire about it they told me that $100 was incidentals and the other money wasn't really charged, it was a pending charge, and that the final charge would be a lesser amount but not the lower amount my friend paid because he had a different room rate. Same room, booked fifteen minutes later, different room rate. They promised that when we checked out everything would make sense with the final billing and they could print me out what that was. When we checked out their entire system was down and they could not tell me how much the two of us were charged. They had to hand write my e-mail address and stated they would e-mail it to me. As I am writing this I have not received that receipt and I don't entirely know what I was charged for yet as the transactions are still pending. Perhaps this is all a hiccup with a new company buying out The Heathman. Perhaps it will all be resolved within a few months. I am going to hesitate, though, when booking in the future.

Yelp
What started off as a little rough- the Hotel is being renovated at the moment and so it's not in full splendor- the staff made up for in droves of accommodation! This is a lovely historic hotel, with Beefeater doormen and modern rooms! I loved the extra touches they put into making us feel so welcomed, I really appreciate the texting concierge that made access to information, room requests fast and easy. The local beer at check in, the whisky happy hour, the high tea on weekends- this does require 24 hour advance notice and reservations. Located in a great area with walking to many fun sites and restaurants! Historic 5 star accommodation with modern flair!

Yelp
They dropped the Beefeater and lost their way. The Heathman used to be a classy slice of European charm in Portland, but it's no more. Three stars for the good: Nice staff, comfortable bed and the room was clean. Great view from the 8th floor. The library room was a nice touch but no replacement for a restaurant. The soap and shampoo smell great. The bad: The old "this is a special place"ambiance is gone. There is no restaurant. The hotel decor is an un-cozy minimalist mix of George Jetson meets youth hostel, the furnishings reminiscent of leftovers from a tacky 50's motel, that unfortunately were salvaged just before someone tossed a well deserved match on the pile. The check in counter is now a couple of of TV tray ish desks. The wall "art" looks like something I'd be capable of which is no complement. My bathroom featured a sad/nauseating/disturbing abstract litho of an unfortunate mollusk that was run over by a steam roller, one sad eye staring out at the viewer. I threw a towel over it. Good location but no longer a destination in and of itself.

Laurie B.

Yelp
Unfortunately, it's not as nice as it was in the past. No bar, no room service, no housekeeping. Some of the staff are friendly while others act like you're putting them out by asking for clean cups at the front desk. Rooms are quiet and comfortable. Nicely decorated. On the fence as to whether I'll ever stay here again.

Yelp
Pleasant room, terrible hospitality. After two weeks of road tripping up the west coast with my gf, we arrive at The Heathman looking forward to the two night stay. I park out front and go to check in. The only parking option is valet for $50/night, about $20/night more than the closest garage a block away, but I did it anyway because I was tired and didn't want to look for an alternative at the time. At check in we're informed that there's a $30/night "amenity fee" for basics like a gym. This isn't a resort and if your only amenity is a gym I'm not sure how we're all justifying a fee for this... I just drove 5 hours so fine, take my extra $80/night for parking and a gym I won't use. If they have other amenities, there was no information provided about any of them. I go to get my bags from the car and receive not even an offer of help. I schlep two 50lb suitcases and two bags up a few stairs and into the elevator. Not once did anyone offer even a cart or to hold a door open. I have stayed at roadside motels with better service. We make it to the room and it's perfectly fine. There are some basics missing like a water glass and coffee for the French press, but otherwise it's a regular hotel room. My gf and I take showers and get ready to find some dinner. The shower takes a solid 5 minutes to heat up, which was surprising. On our way out we tell the front desk that we're missing water glasses and coffee, they offer to get some now and we say ok we're heading out. Then they tell us we will have to come back when we can take the water glasses and coffee up to our room ourselves. Really? You can't just put it in the room for me? After dinner there's no one to be found at the front desk so we just give up on the water glasses and coffee. Taking the car in and out of the valet is similarly frustrating. There was only one person working at a time and no system for checking in and out. They only take one set of keys at a time, so you can't just drop your car off and go - you have to wait for someone to be available to leave and park it. So expect to spend a few minutes waiting around. The second day of my stay they left my car sitting outside in a loading zone for 8 hours and then the kid working the front desk tried to blame someone else when I had handed him the keys earlier in the day. Not even an "I'm so sorry, I'll take care of it right now". My car could have been towed, ticketed, etc. The guy tried to hand my gf the keys to go move the car herself - which is more confusing than anything else. Am I just donating $50/day to The Heathman? No turndown service or room cleaning either. For two nights this wasn't a huge deal but if you're staying here longer you might want a clean towel or something. The location is pretty good. Mostly walkable but sketchy at night. In the morning there are good coffee shops and breakfast spots just a few minutes away, but otherwise I was driving or taking taxis everywhere. Some positives: The bed and pillows were very comfortable. One of the better beds I've slept in on this trip. Quiet. My room was so nice and quiet. I got a very good sleep at The Heathman. The blackout curtains are nice as well. The room and bathroom are reasonably sized. I saw some reviews mention and awkward layout but mine was good, despite a weirdly large TV. Fun art. The prints and paintings around the hotel are lovely. An otherwise fine hotel ruined by exceedingly poor hospitality.

Caleb K.

Yelp
The hotel's art isn't bad and it's clean. Pretty nice place actually. But here is the annoying part that instigated my review. They've got a resort fee of $30. And what makes the Heathman a resort? Well they've got a library and you can read the books. Hahahaha. Such a funny explanation for ripping people off. You can read all the books you want! Haha.
