I just received a voucher for one free drink here, as part of an event a couple weeks ago, and last weekend, I popped in to spend it. Based on previous experience, I wasn't expecting to be particularly impressed (I hadn't been here in a couple years, *because* the last time I was there, I didn't think the drinks were that impressive, certainly for the price, but hey, it was free!) I was expecting it to still look just as awesome as it always does, but to be a bit disappointing regarding the quality of the drinks themselves.
Well, anyway, I was *solidly* surprised, so I'm updating my review. Note, this update *only* encompasses their bar, especially during happy hour, which I happened to also be there for. My previous review stands as far as food goes (tasty but overpriced), but they've massively revamped their drinks menu since I was there last, for the (significantly) better. I expect to be back fairly often for drinks now, based on my most recent experience (great drinks, great service, great prices, and yes, also great ambiance. That last one's the least important to me, but still, it is a pretty cool place.)
Their happy hour on beer is 2 dollars off full pours, and a dollar off half pours. That meant during happy hour, when I was there, you could get 9oz of Smog City's coffee porter for $3.50 - heck yes! That's cheaper than at the brewery! (And a great beer. I haven't been back since then, though, so I can't say as of now how frequently they rotate, but regardless, I'm expecting great deals on beer now.) Happy hour is until 7, and includes Saturday, because DTLB is freaking awesome when it comes to happy hours on Saturday.
Sadly, as far as cocktails, only their cheap wells are made cheaper on happy hour, not the fancy stuff. But happily (for me and for them), they said the voucher was good for *any* one free drink, so clearly I went with a $14 mezcal punch that advertised it would hit all my favorite cocktail notes: mezcal, smoky, spicy, citrus. I would go so far as to say that it tasted like a $14 cocktail. Granted, I probably wouldn't come *back* for that cocktail for $14 again at this location, but that's only because The Harbor is literally next door, where I can get a cocktail for $8 (if it's happy hour) that'll hit all the same notes if I want, because The Harbor has the best happy hour in Long Beach, and probably all of SoCal. But if The Harbor stopped having such a great HH, or if me and that same drink were together at a bar somewhere that *wasn't* right next door to The Harbor, I absolutely would pay $14 again for that drink, and that is pretty high praise.
Still probably wouldn't be back for food, though. (Though if I were already there for a HH beer, I might *get* some food - they do have some appetizers on happy hour, and again, the food's pretty good, just too pricey. Their appetizers are $2 off for HH, which makes them only *kinda* pricey. I haven't tried the food in a couple years, but I might again at some point, in which case I'll update this.)
p.s. I also loved that they played super-classy jazz instead of typical bar music, and also, that they played it at a perfect volume, where you could enjoy the music, but you could also hear yourself think/other people talk. Definitely *not* a "get sloppy drunk" kind of bar, which means it's my kind of bar.
