"Like most good thrift stores, the Brown Elephant is hit or miss. Sometimes you can find great books, T-shirts, and super-cheap vinyl—other times, nothing appeals, and you just wander around until your feet hurt. This shop is well organized, and most of the home goods are reasonably priced. All of the proceeds go to benefit the Howard Brown Health Center, a great LGBT charity; if you’re waffling on spending a couple extra bucks, just go for it and know that your money is going to help someone who needs it. (The Brown Elephant has three outlets: this one in Lakeview, one in Andersonville, and one in Oak Park.)"

This store is great. You can find a good selection of clothes and shoes! They also have a big selection of books and CDs. The prices are pretty reasonable and affordable. They have a small jewelry section. They also have two available dressing rooms. The staff is nice. I found some great Mary Jane heeled ballet shoes that I've been wanting for the longest time. I can't wait to come back to shop here!

Decent quality thrift place with VERY high prices. It is also very disorganized, with most items sorted by COLOUR! Clothes, colour. Books, colour. Books! It made it difficult to find anything, or I would get excited for a piece, only to see that it was a smaller size than needed, nestled up next to other items of a totally different size.

Great selection & great prices! Bought two shirts and a dress from there today and I absolutely love them! The dress is perfect for an upcoming wedding I’m attending in a couple of weeks. The staff were nice, and making donations were souped easy. To make a donation, you enter through the front and walk to the back right corner to drop off your items. Brown Elephant has tops, pants, shoes, accessories, formal attire, home goods, and various medias such as vinyl records, movies and books. Can’t wait to go back to see what I find next time!

The staff are extremely friendly, they take in so much inventory and literally rotate it daily. They have a wide selection of everything from clothing and accessories to home goods and cookware. Overall a very pleasant shopping and donating experience. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a positive thrifting activity. They also support great causes!

I was very impressed with this store. After searching high and low for a decently priced couch, both online and in multiple stores, I finally came across the Brown Elephant. All of their items are donated, so yes they are slightly used but all of the things they sell there are in such good condition that you can't even tell. Also, because they are donated it allows them to give a much lower price than other places. I bought the couch/futon in the picture for 95 Dollars. Other couches which were a lot more solid/traditional couches were around 100-150, which for how nice they were are prices than simply cannot be beat. Even the Salvation Army's couches were much more expensive and were also uglier and not in as good condition. The only downside was they do not deliver the furniture-- however the clerk was extremely helpful and wrote down 4 different services for me to try which were all pretty affordable/average amount for transporting a couch. As for the rest of the store, I thought it was kind of hilarious that they had an actual DJ playing tracks there....At 1pm on Saturday. But I enjoyed it. Their book and vinyls section was nice and I enjoyed looking through the clothes which had some very trendy options but I didnt spend as much time in those sections as the furniture part. I do plan on going back as I buy more smaller items for my new apartment. Side note-- on the receipt you sign there is a spot to 'tip'...I asked the clerk if this was usual here because I have not seen tipping on non-food store receipts before-- he informed me the tips go straight to the Howard Brown Medical center, which by the way, is what the profits of this shop go to...So yes you can shop for furniture with prices so low that I almost felt like a bandit making off with my new couch, but also you get to feel good for supporting a local health center by buying there....OH and last thing! Do you have some furniture you can donate? Well if you go to their website you can see they will actually pick it up for you...And they even provide you with a form you can fill out which you can keep to write off in your taxes! Anyways long story short this place is cool and I would definitely recommend coming here, especially if you are in need of some nice, quality new furniture for ridiculously low prices.

I drove by they went under? Saw huge closed sign on window. This store has become a retail store the prices are so high on any antique furniture or any type of antiques the only thing that maybe is worth buying is clothes but they raised the prices so high that this is not a thrift store anymore. I remember when they were a reasonable very busy thrift. The prices are so high they turned into being a ghost town. Village discount outlet five blocks away is a much better more reasonable store. Salvation army too high too.

FANTASTIC thrift store for a great cause! They have try-on rooms and a more curated designer section along with general sections. Books, CDs, and lots of other media, and a selection of furniture and knick knacks are also purchasable! They also offer volunteer opportunities if you ever have time. It's a great store :)
