"Like most good thrift stores, the Brown Elephant is hit or miss. Sometimes you can find great books, T-shirts, and super-cheap vinyl—other times, nothing appeals, and you just wander around until your feet hurt. This shop is well organized, and most of the home goods are reasonably priced. All of the proceeds go to benefit the Howard Brown Health Center, a great LGBT charity; if you’re waffling on spending a couple extra bucks, just go for it and know that your money is going to help someone who needs it. (The Brown Elephant has three outlets: this one in Lakeview, one in Andersonville, and one in Oak Park.)"

Store is bright and clean, staff is beyond amazing 🤩 I have found some great things here. The price is amazing and it’s raising money for an amazing cause and space. My day gets better when I find time to swing over here. The intake donation workers always are helpful and happy also! I am very thankful that Chicago has this location and opportunity! ☀️

Google
Great location, great staff and I almost always find something cool. I thrift more craft, decor and home goods than clothes and they always have a pretty good selection. Just note that it’s not as big as their Andersonville location

Outstanding selection of quality items. The prices are fair and the quality of the furniture for sale is excellent. Beautiful unique items.

Trying to donate a 2-year-old, perfectly good TV stand to this place has felt like trying to give away free gold to someone who refuses to open their front door. I’ve left voicemails, sent emails, and waited patiently. Crickets for the past two days.. No catch. Just take the damn thing.

I was very impressed with this store. After searching high and low for a decently priced couch, both online and in multiple stores, I finally came across the Brown Elephant. All of their items are donated, so yes they are slightly used but all of the things they sell there are in such good condition that you can't even tell. Also, because they are donated it allows them to give a much lower price than other places. I bought the couch/futon in the picture for 95 Dollars. Other couches which were a lot more solid/traditional couches were around 100-150, which for how nice they were are prices than simply cannot be beat. Even the Salvation Army's couches were much more expensive and were also uglier and not in as good condition. The only downside was they do not deliver the furniture-- however the clerk was extremely helpful and wrote down 4 different services for me to try which were all pretty affordable/average amount for transporting a couch. As for the rest of the store, I thought it was kind of hilarious that they had an actual DJ playing tracks there....At 1pm on Saturday. But I enjoyed it. Their book and vinyls section was nice and I enjoyed looking through the clothes which had some very trendy options but I didnt spend as much time in those sections as the furniture part. I do plan on going back as I buy more smaller items for my new apartment. Side note-- on the receipt you sign there is a spot to 'tip'...I asked the clerk if this was usual here because I have not seen tipping on non-food store receipts before-- he informed me the tips go straight to the Howard Brown Medical center, which by the way, is what the profits of this shop go to...So yes you can shop for furniture with prices so low that I almost felt like a bandit making off with my new couch, but also you get to feel good for supporting a local health center by buying there....OH and last thing! Do you have some furniture you can donate? Well if you go to their website you can see they will actually pick it up for you...And they even provide you with a form you can fill out which you can keep to write off in your taxes! Anyways long story short this place is cool and I would definitely recommend coming here, especially if you are in need of some nice, quality new furniture for ridiculously low prices.

Yelp
I have been going to the brown elephant since they opened i think the staff at belmont are wonderful and helpful. But management just made a decision to raise all used blue rays to 5:50 a Piece from a dollar fifty1:50 i can get a new cd sealed for $5.99 at walmart . Or 5.00 dollars at the Exchange on belmont. Why would i buy a middle of the road title used for $5.50. Management is clueless

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at this location. We were looking for a dining room table set and stopped in here on a whim. We immediately found what we were looking for. It was not priced but Jonathan provided us with an incredible deal we could not pass up. They also suggested an amazing delivery option. We are ecstatic and grateful. Thank you Jonathan and Freja for your exceptional customer service. The Brown Elephant is unmatched.

Yelp
A lot of North side locals already know the brand for the Andersonville location built in a old theater. Recently the Brown Elephants's Lincoln Ave location closed which is smart because its low traffic. It's honestly a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. The lot was empty for a bit. You can expect similar offerings as the Lincoln Ave location being about the same approximate size. It's a very easily accessible area being at the junction of Clark, Belmont, and Halsted. Belmont station is down the street a block away. There's plenty of other clothing shops and restaurants in the area. It's honestly a nice Saturday to hit maybe the 5-6 vintage shop and grab some lunch at one of the many tasty restaurants in the area

Yelp
It's not horrible for a thrift store, but the one on North Broadway is much better. They have a lot of furniture and a lot of clothing which I think is overpriced six or seven dollars for a worn T-shirt. They seem to just have the same DVDs and CDs and books. the books are hard to shop because they're organized by color of the spine, which you don't see that in the library or in a normal bookstore. If you're looking for a book, I guess it would help to know the color of the spine. they're pricing on Books is confusing. the sign says two for one, but it's only certain books so I checked out. The cashier certainly has a attitude. Makes me not want to go back.

Yelp
Was accustomed to the Lincoln store (and before that, the Halsted Street store) and this one just isn't as nice. Staff is great but the selections are minimal and the quality of the products are not as great. Not sure whether the donations have changed in quality or whether the persons who screen the products and decide what to sell are different. There was a time when you could get high end products at great prices but since they moved to the West Belmont store this doesn't seem to be the case any longer. Too bad.

Yelp
We are in the midst of furnishing a 2nd place in Chicago. I try to visit the Brown Elephant on Belmont a few times/week when we are here. The selection varies widely --sometimes I don't find anything. Other times, however, I've found exactly what I need at really good prices. Some examples of what I've found: a beautiful modern pitcher (for rum punch!) for $6, nice cocktail and wine glasses for $1-$2 apiece, assorted kitchen needs (e.g., ladle, measuring cup) for 50 cents, and new-looking plastic storage containers for $1.50. The staff are super helpful.
