"Quality Travel in Rural Italy: Palazzo del Te in Mantova Mantova may sound familiar. It's where Romeo was exiled from fair Verona in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It may not sound like an obvious choice as an artistic hidden gem, but when Shakespeare wrote his play Mantua was a swamp land. The Palazzo del Te was built in 1526, commissioned by Duke Frederigo II Gonzaga and designed by Giulio Romano. The Palazzo itself is an embodiment of Gonzaga's desire for love and struggle for power. It was built in two phases: The first phase of the Palazzo is rife with frescos of passion, love, and a whole lot of naked gods and goddesses. It was in these rooms where he would probably make believe he was as well endowed as Zeus and play out the sexual scenes with mistresses, of which he had many. The second phase was built in 1530 and in those 4 years Duke Gonzaga got his priorities in order. This time he meant business and aligned himself politically with Charles V—Holy Roman Emperor, aka Charles I King of Spain. Aside from its history, what makes the Palazzo del Te "quality travel" is its location off the beaten track, away from the crowds of tourists blocking your view of the Sistine Chapel or the colosseum. You get an intimate experience with a work of art, or in this case an entire building without being shoveled out (which was my experience at the Sistine Chapel). Give the small towns of Italy a chance, and help preserve lesser-known works of art that deserve it as much as the famous sights in Rome, Florence, and Venice."

🏛️ Palazzo Te, a true architectural gem. I admired the breathtaking frescoes in the Hall of the Giants, an explosion of color and incredible details. The beauty and art of this palace in Mantua deeply impressed me, offering me a total immersion in Italian history and culture. Palazzo Te is a stunning example of Italian Mannerist architecture and a must-see for art and history lovers. Built in the 16th century by Giulio Romano for Federico II Gonzaga, it’s both elegant and eccentric. The highlight is the Sala dei Giganti, where dramatic frescoes engulf visitors in a collapsing world of myth. The palace’s playful illusions and masterful fresco work make it feel more like a theatrical experience than a museum. While it’s not massive, the artistry is unforgettable. A unique gem in Mantua that blends grandeur with creative flair.

This is the palace built by the royal family of Mantua, as a palace of leisure, now a museum. It is richly decorated with frescoes, including those by Giulio Romano. My favorite room was The Hall of the Giants alhough others were also quite beautiful. There is a good audioguide in English and other languages.

Lots of neat artwork, but what you get to see for the €15 entry pales in comparison the the Ducal Palace complex including the San Giorgio castle (same entry fee) and museums. It was neat to check out, but if you only have time or funds for one, this is not the better choice considering offerings options and price. But it sure is worth stroll thru if you are here and interested. Different style of artwork than a lot we saw around there. Don't forget the grotto before you leave!

This palace by Giulio Romano is rightly world famous. It stands out as an original masterpiece in architecture and painting too. A must see in beautiful Mantova. Don’t miss the view arriving from north of Mantova and see renaissance town just lying d as young of 3 lakes. Just stunning

Art on every single wall, although a lot of it is mythical, the Greek Gods. I wouldn't take children there. I think they'd be bored and the art is odd but it's incredible. Every single room has paintings on the walls, moulding. It's old, it's beautiful.

A gorgeous piece of history that is still standing today. Seeing Palazzo Te transports you back in time, and feels as though you’re in a dream. We visited the wonderful November 2023 exhibition, and the place was in pristine condition. The infamous Sala dei Giganti e Sala dei Cavalli are not to be missed! Staff are extremely kind, and like all other museums in Italy, they offer discounts for students, elderly people and children.

Located in outskirts of the old town of Mantua (UNESCO city) this is a palace worth a visit and has the occasional special exhibitions. The rooms are covered with beautiful wall paintings, ceilings and great art display. Buying online tickets is highly recommended during holidays as it can be very busy.
