"This elegant restaurant on the harbourside of a small fishing village has been run by the Schiavone family for over 10 years. Son James treats diners to a daily changing selection of simply cooked whole fish and other, more modern, imaginative seafood dishes. Apart from fishermen they support the local baker that provides daily bread for the village and a hydroponic farmer which is a few kilometers from the restaurant. Their 150+ bin wine list is renowned locally." - Michelin Inspector

"The small fishing village of Marsaxlokk is the perfect fit for the Schiavone family’s elegant harbourside restaurant, Tartarun, which is all about fish. Having run the place for over 10 years, their restaurant has become an integral part of village life. It’s all about freshness here, and father Joseph sources only the best quality fish to bring to the table. A typical day at Tartarun starts early at the fish market and includes meticulous preparation of the day's catch for the menu's popular main course, 'catch of the day'. The evening winds down with dinner service and finally, time for a team chat. After attending culinary school, James started work in the family business, and in 2009, Tartarun reopened as a smart yet laid-back fish restaurant. The brothers have since elevated the standard of their dishes and polished the service, aiming for customer satisfaction and business sustainability." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

A Hidden Gem for Seafood Lovers Tartarus in Malta is an absolute delight for seafood enthusiasts. We had the catch of the day, which was perfectly cooked and full of fresh, delicate flavors—more than enough to share between two. The wine selection is exceptionally well-curated, featuring rare finds, including a beautifully balanced sweet wine from Chile that was a standout. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the staff are knowledgeable and passionate about what they serve. If you’re looking for a place that values quality ingredients and expert pairings, Tartarus is a must-visit!

It is easy to see how this place had a 2024 Michelin mention. The food was crafted with sophistication and thoughtfulness. The olive bites were an absolute revelation and the fish was fresh and savory. A definite must if you are in town. Prices were extremely competitive too

Back corner seat, great people watching, food was excellent, service was OK. I don't believe we were posh enough. Other tables seemed to get better service. But all in all, a great experience.

Excellent food and service. Chili and lime oysters were great. The lobster linguine was delicious and for main we took a spotted sea bream which was cooked and cleaned to perfection. Fine dining at a fair price.

Stopped by here for lunch during our 3-day visit to Malta. Even though we didn’t have a reservation, the manager happily accommodated us and got us a table within 30 mins. We had the fish tartare and oysters to start with. I would skip the oysters as the price didn’t justify the quality. The fish tartare was excellent, with fresh chunks of fish. For the entree, we picked out a beautiful snapper and had it salt-baked. The meat was so tender and fresh. The restaurant was bustling, so service was a bit slow at times. Overall, our experience was great, and the meal was delicious at this Michelin Guide restaurant.

We ate here today, a family of 4. On our way to the restaurant our driver explained this is the restaurant to gain points with his wife, this started to set our expectations. We had the prawn carpaccio, the tuna carpaccio and squid to start, already the best meal we had eaten in our week in Malta. It followed with red snapper and John dory as a main which also failed to disappoint, both beautifully cooked. The food was exceptional, the staff (family run) were a delight, our waitress recommended a white wine to go with the meal, and she nailed it. I can't recommend this enough.
