This vibrant taqueria serves up authentic Mexican fare with a twist, boasting loads of vegetarian and vegan options in a colorful, welcoming space.
"Michoacán native Noe Bermudez combines the traditions of his home region with his own penchant for nutrition on an herbivore-friendly menu that’s supplemented by a vibrant selection of juice blends, aguas frescas, and smoothies. Signatures include the deeply savory sopa Tarasca (bean soup), tamales de elote, and seven-chile mole, but Bermudez’s vegetarian huaraches and enchiladas — loaded with the likes of cactus, carrots, potatoes, spinach, zucchini, and mushrooms — warrant mention too." - Ruth Tobias, Eater Staff
"Of course you love tacos, but if you can take off your tortilla-focused blinders for a second, there are some other major, must-order Mexican dishes at Tarasco’s. The menu at the Federal Boulevard strip mall spot can be overwhelming because it’s so long, but skip to the Michoacano section, where you’ll find stuff like sweet corn tamales with salsa verde, spicy pozole, and the complex seven chile mole served over carnitas. Besides the amazing food, the space radiates positivity, with happy quotes and calaveras covering the walls." - Allyson Reedy
"This Federal Boulevard favorite has long been known for two things: Michoacán-style Mexican cuisine on the one hand, vegetarian-friendliness on the other. The signature sopa Tarasca exemplifies both, with a super-smooth and creamy pinto-bean base plus an abundance of queso fresco and tortilla strips to mix into it." - Rebecca Treon, Gigi Sukin, Ruth Tobias
"From the outside, Tarasco's looks like any other taqueria on Federal Boulevard, squat and nondescript, wedged in between auto shops and check cashing stores. It looks like your average taqueria from the inside, too, albeit an especially homey one: yellow and red with lots of colorful folk art—ceramics and masks and humorous signs in Spanish—and souvenir postcards beneath glass-topped tables. But one glance at the menu, and you’ll see things a little differently. At this Michoacán kitchen—not specifically a taqueria at all—owner Noe Bermudez takes special care to offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free versions of his regional specialties, making a diverse, low-key crowd of regulars feel welcome and comfortable in the process." - Ruth Tobias
"Chef Noe Bermudez’s Federal Boulevard fixture (and its Westwood sibling, Kahlo’s) stands out from the taqueria pack in two ways: one, it’s vegetarian-friendly, and two, it’s sprinkled with recipes from Michoacán, the so-called “soul of Mexico.” Highlights include tamales de elote, made with fresh corn beneath dollops of crema and salsa verde, plus a sprinkling of queso fresco; the earthy bean soup called sopa Tarasca; and Bermudez’s notoriously intense mole siete chiles." - Ruth Tobias
