Not sure how long Tamashi has been open, but we live 1-1/2 miles away and made our first visit last night. When we arrived there was a sign-in sheet on the wall next to the front door, so we signed in and waited (impatiently) for our name to be called. By the time they called our name we entered a full restaurant with three parties behind us. A really good sign on a Monday night!!
Very small dining room and about 6 or 7 four-top and 4 or 5 two-top booths, with about 6 or so stools at the sushi bar. But the servers were hustling and working to make sure everyone was served quickly.
Started out with Edamame, Takoyaki, Gyoza and a Shaggy Dog roll; there were three of us, so we didn't want to run out! Excellent on all four dishes!! The dumplings appeared to be deep-fried not pan fried and they were chrispy with a tasty ground pork filling. Edamame, well it's Edamame what can you say. The Octopus balls weren't fried as crisp as most, but not a drawback and at the price ($5.75 for 5 balls) you couldn't expect them to be chock-full of octopus, but they had enough to make the grade. The Shaggy Dog roll was outstanding! Freshly made, plenty of "stuffing" and nicey presented.
After those gems, we went on to order the "main", which included a Houston Roll, Curry Tsukemen, and Tonkotsu. The Curry Tsukemen was OUTSTANDING, best Ramen I've ever had, in the US or Japan!! So much flavor in a single bowl, just enough curry for flavor but not so much it took over the dish. It a must try for anyone's first visit. A couple of bottles of Sake and the meal was complete.
The food is FIVE STAR, the ambience, waiting outside, small dining room and cramped tables are down to FOUR STARS, but had to keep the FIVE STAR rating. But definitely a keeper. Very young crowd, probably because the food is great and the prices are very reasonable, actually GREAT for the quality and portions.
I took some pictures of the first course before we starting eating, but when the second course came, we did wait for pictures, we started eating immediately, before I could get any pictures.
