I enjoy exploring new sushi places and have visited various locations in New York and Japan. For my 2023 Christmas in Tokyo, I chose Sushi Ryo - because it was the only place where I could reserve online – you know if you don’t speak Japanese fluently, it’s so hard to do so
Long story short, to sum up my experience:
- Although informing them of a shrimp allergy in advance, there was no pre-acknowledgment or follow-up. Unfortunately, my guest had to skip when shrimp was served, and it seemed like the chef was unaware and indifferent to allergies, despite confirming with my hotel concierge beforehand
- Sake choices were not up to the customer; they decided for you and you have no choice. As a frequent sake drinker, I found their sake's smell and flavor akin to it being open for too long - I’m pretty sure about that. The one they opened a fresh bottle, it was surprisingly good though
- The strained relationship between the main chef and the server created an uncomfortable atmosphere and it was so awful. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up in Asia culture, I could see the invisible but obvious hierarchy in the restaurant added to our discomfort very much
- Priced at ¥25,000 per person for Christmas, the sushi lacked the expected "wow" factor. The course was SO PLAIN, without truffles, caviar, or exquisite ingredients. At half the price, it might have been acceptable
- The dessert was only one strawberry. Literally just one strawberry
This is my last day in Tokyo for my trip, the disappointment at this restaurant compelled me to share the experience. If you go to sushi places a lot and see these pictures, you know what I’m saying - you could see that the sushi course was not for the price.
