Nestled in a retro diner space, Superiority Burger whips up inventive vegetarian delights like flavorful grain patties and indulgent gelato in the East Village.
"In the world of East Village restaurants, Superiority Burger is what we’d call a “chaotic good” character. The walls are covered in photos of everything from Taki 183’s graffiti to Dock Ellis' acid-fueled no-hitter. In the bathroom, audio clips switch every 15 seconds from old commercials to episodes of The Dating Game. There is a real soda fountain. They also make vegan burgers and space-age desserts, and have a fan club that borders on cultish. They also do a late night menu from 11pm to 2am Thursday through Saturday. "While there are a lot of indulgent things to eat at Superiority Burger, you can keep things pretty light at this vegetarian East Village retro diner. Their vegetarian sloppy joe might not be a part of any lifestyle that’s currently trending, but it must be healthier than the real thing. The veggie burger also tastes like it’s made from real vegetables, and the sides generally won’t do you much damage. Have some burnt broccoli. Have some focaccia. Maybe even a little gelato." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, will hartman
"Superiority Burger drew legions of fans when it opened a tiny takeout spot on East Ninth Street. More recently, the restaurant relocated to bigger digs in the former home of Odessa Diner. Owner Brooks Headley has continued to sell vegetarian fare, some vegan, only now the menu and seating are much more extensive. The terrific food, desserts, and atmosphere made it Eater NY’s “restaurant of the year” for 2023." - Eater Staff
"Hours: Fridays and Saturdays until 1 a.m. The acclaimed vegetarian restaurant serves some of Manhattan’s best comfort foods. On the weekends, the restaurant stays open until 1 a.m. Good news? For the first time in its history, you can now make a reservation at SB." - Luke Fortney, Robert Sietsema
"Superiority Burger does brunch on the weekends now, meaning that their faux-diner aesthetic turns into a real diner for two days a week. Obviously, if you’re looking for your bacon fix, Superiority Burger isn’t the place for you. But if a spongy, crisp waffle served with guava butter and syrup, grits, or a tofu scramble sound like a good way to start the day, then Superiority Burger is a great East Village option. Plus, it’s easier to walk in for brunch than dinner. The menu changes often, but one weekend special is always available—ask them for a slab of their absolutely killer focaccia.
