My husband and I recently ventured to Superior Motors for dinner and it was an excellent experience! The menu is diverse, with fresh from farm produce and high quality meats, and rotates pretty regularly from what I can tell.
Our starter was beef tartare. The flavors were really intense and wrapping it in the nori paper (as our waiter said, “like street tacos”) was a new take I really enjoyed. I had the lamb for my entree and it was unbelievably good. A sweet and savory mix that surprised me, and it went well alongside the lentils and yogurt. I had their vermouth drink alongside it, an herbal, lemony drink that was really refreshing. I later had the rye, and the gin drink, with watermelon and lime - completely to die for!
[From John, regarding his entree & drinks:] The tuna entree featured a generous portion of quality tuna seared rare with a coriander seasoning rub. It was delightfully savory and sweet, but paled in comparison to the light summer salad served on top. It was undeniably fresh, light, and summery - easily the best salad ever served to me at a restaurant. I didn’t care for the pureed olive sauce under the tuna and salad, partly because I don’t like olives *that* much, but also because it overpowered the very delicate flavor of the tuna itself. I had a crisp wheat beer with the entree, and followed it with the bourbon excellent cocktail over desert. [/John]
Our dessert was the sourdough poundcake, which was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Moist but delicate, with blueberry and honey to dip in. It also had an excellent caramel ice cream alongside it. We loved how flavorful it was, and it was a significant serving, too. Not too overwhelming with sweetness, but still felt like a really indulgent dessert!
The restaurant’s atmosphere is very casual and modern, but has the touches you would expect from somewhere that started as a car dealership. There’s a lot of natural light, and there are low half-walls of painted cement (similar to the floors). There’s music in the background, courtesy of cassette tape decks and vinyl playing full albums.
The service was excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the drinks and food, and pleasant to talk to. We never lacked for full drinks or waited long for service.
The manager, Chris Clark, took us on a brief tour of the kitchen and areas still in progress. The kitchen is surprisingly quiet, but is filled with busy people. Clean and very simple in appearance, featuring some unique space for smoked meats and roasting vegetables. The staff was really nice and welcoming even when we were stepped into their space, which was really great. We also got to see the back area where they’re putting in a theater (hopefully seating around 75!) and box office, and then walked out the back to see their community bread oven and the upcoming patio seating.
We were excited to hear about the job training program that they have in place, something promised by the planning, and look forward to seeing the trainees grow and bring their work to the community! It does seem like Superior Motors is working towards - and fulfilling - their promises made by the Kickstarter, in spite of setbacks from a few different directions. We are so grateful to Chris for letting us see the restaurant in full and for the excellent service, and can’t wait to go back to Superior Motors for another excellent meal!
