"You’ll probably smell this timeworn, flag-festooned fish kiosk before you even spot the queues along the Singel canal, about 550 yards from Centraal Station. Below the quirky sign—the superscript ‘s’ of Stubbe’s is appealingly slapdash—Dutch matrons in striped aprons deliver salty, slippery herring, a rite of passage for Amsterdammers. Smoked eel, anchovies, and shrimps are all on the menu, but raw herring is what you want. If you’re not so sure about eating the fish au naturel, go for the herring roll, offsetting the salt with soft white bread, chopped onions, and sweet, crunchy pickles." - Meredith Bethune, Jennifer Ceaser

"Going Fishing on the Singel Bridge Eating raw herring is a right of passage for many who visit Amsterdam . Order yours from the friendly Dutch matrons in blue and white-striped aprons at Stubbe's Haaring, a herring stand with a view on the bridge over Singel Canal, just off Haarlemerstraat. For decades, this local institution has satisfied the fish cravings of Dutchies and visitors with lightly brined herring, smoked eel and other delicacies from the North Sea. Unless you want bragging rights, there's no need to eat your buttery snack Dutch style, grabbing it by the tail, throwing your head back and lowering the fish whole into your gaping mouth. Most locals eat it in a less flashy way: cut up into small pieces, covered with onions and sweet pickles, topped with a Dutch flag. It's served on a waxed paper plate, sans bread or cutlery. Use the flag-festooned toothpick to stab the soft, mild-flavored morsels and bring them to your mouth. For a more filling meal, order a broodje haring (herring sandwich) on a soft, white bun, filled with fish, pickles and onions. Eet smakelijk!"

Google
Stubbe’s Haring, located near Amsterdam’s Central Station, is a renowned spot for traditional Dutch herring. Serving locals and visitors for decades, this family-owned stand offers fresh herring with pickles and onions, either on a plate or in a soft bun. The friendly service and authentic flavors make it a must-visit for anyone seeking a true taste of Amsterdam.

Google
Great prices, friendly staff and the best rollmops I've ever eaten, fresh and not too sour!. Friendly to my dog too 😊

Google
This was the first time having Dutch herring served this way and it wasn't really too bad. I kind of enjoyed it as I don't get these sort of fish served this way back where I come from. I liked eating it whilst walking around the streets of Amsterdam and I loved how both the onions and pickles add that little bit of acidity to the overall flavour profile. They didn't accept credit cards so have cash ready.

Google
You have to try a herring sandwich when in Amsterdam !! And this is the place to try 😀

Google
This was my last meal before departing back to the UK in 2022, and I must say I really enjoyed it! The quality of the food was splendid, and the service I received was welcoming! Will be visiting again when I'll be returning to the Netherlands!

Google
The best herring I have ever had! I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich and the service was warm and efficient. One of my highlights in Amsterdam.

Google
4 stars. Short walk from Amsterdam central station. Good simple fish in bread. Not too expensive (~€4 per sandwich) and hits the spot. Give it a try. Staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of locals also in the queue

Google
The Haring sandwich was honestly good. I reduced two stars solely for the following interaction: "How much is it?" "It's 4.5 euros, oh wait, no, it is 5 euros."

Yelp
so good. i wish we had raw herring as a street food in the states too. it's clean, fresh, and delicious. didn't taste or smell fishy. salted and frozen before serving thawed, it isn't overly salty. i really liked the pairing of the diced onions and pickles with the fish as well. not sure how much of it i can eat in one sitting, but i'd eat it as a guilt free tasty snack every day if i could. stand ladies are efficient. must try when in amsterdam.

Yelp
Not just Herring, but they also have a smoked salmon sandwich and a hotdog in a bun that looked very good. I love the little pickle slices and the chopped onions. This is not a restaurant but more like a food truck/trailer. Service was good, and from the to-go concept, you can walk and eat outside.

Yelp
My favorite, everything about it. Cute li'l to-go shop, friendly staff. I was here last April, and I ran right from Centraal for my haring fix. Must have! Everything is fresh and delicious. I love the Dutch and their herring obsession! I'll come here every single time I'm in AMS, which I hope is SOON and frequent.

Yelp
Very friendly service... Got an order to take away, but ate it just a few steps away.... Absolutely delicious.

Yelp
When in Amsterdam, roam around and eat Herring (Haring). This is one of those Herring Stands. Walking distance from Centraal station to the right. I had a Herring sandwich first, then had the smoked version. If they had not been closed for a Stat Holiday, I would have gone back next day. Honestly delicious. If you like fish, please do give this a shot.

Victoria L.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh herring at this stand. A definite must to experience old Amsterdam. It is strictly take away; there is no seating whatsoever.

Sze Ting L.

Yelp
First time having herring sandwich, and the herring was amazing! Honestly felt like I was eating sashimi. May have found my favorite fish (used to be salmon)

Angela D.

Yelp
Great little stand with traditional Dutch prepared herring. It was not fishy or salty. It was very yummy with the onions and pickles.

Florian K.

Yelp
This "Stubbe Haring" kiosk is located near the Amsterdam Centraal railway station. In Amsterdam it is probably obligatory to taste this sandwich. Raw herring with onions and pickles in a bun. Very good and healthy and inexpensive something a few euros. I've been here several times.

Caitrin O.

Yelp
I was here in May 2015 so I'm not sure why it's listed as closed! The location may be slightly off on the map, but it is still located close to Centraal Station and definitely still open. I had to try raw herring in Amsterdam and Strubbe's is on the top of every list. The taste didn't totally suit me, but the fish was fresh and I'm glad I tried this authentic dish. It did seem a bit pricey- I believe it was €7 or €8 for a fairly small sandwich- but I guess that's just the tourist tax!

Joyce K.

Yelp
It's A-OK. Located in a very prime spot in Amsterdam, the sandwich is what it is. Traveler's tip- just order one and share with your group. If anyone wants more than can buy it.

Larry G.

Yelp
First they are not closed. The bridge their store is located on was being repaired. And the same family has been selling fresh fish at that same location since 1903. They are open. And the food was amazing on Saturday. I could not get enough of the fresh herring, no bread, served on was paper with onions and pickles. With a toothpick and a Dutch flag to eat it. Amazing. Simply amazing. The best ever. I ate breakfast there when they opened and came back again for dinner. And I had a fresh kippers sandwich too. I literally flew 7000 miles from Chicago for the fresh herring. And I would advice you to try it too. Best herring in the world.

Yog D.

Yelp
Haha, this guy is awesome, I had haring sandwich and I asked for mayo or ketchup on the sandwich, this guy refused saying that would be a bad sandwich and if you want to eat traditional dutch haring sandwich just add pickle and onions. he was very polite and funny while saying that. The sandwich is very very nice. I hadnt had anything like that before.

Sarah T.

Yelp
The place is not closed but the food is not that good as well. The herring was too fishy for us and the bun was pretty bland. Pricier than the other herring stand we went the day before which is understandable since this place is in the very touristy area but i have had much better herring in amsterdam from other places

William H.

Yelp
We loved this place. Firstly, it's not closed. Also the price is not as high as people say. We paid about £4 for our sandwich. First time trying it but the bread with fish, pickles and onions was super tasty. Shop is in a good location which is nice. Will definitely go again when we come back.

Joanna C.

Yelp
On the canal and close to the train station, Stubbe's has been around for a long time. This was my first time having fresh herring and it was really delicious! The people working there were also really nice and we ended up coming here again for more herring. Definitely check it out!

Wanda Y.

Yelp
I was scared to try this at first, but am so glad that I did! it's not fishy at all, like I thought raw herring would be. in fact, the texture is velvety and savoury, kind of like smoked salmon. the onion is mild and adds a great contrast, as does the sweet pickle. now I want more!

Syl M.

Yelp
Delicious fresh herring (and much more). Eat it Dutch style (grab the fish by the tail, tilt your head back and enjoy) or have it cut up in small pieces. Stubbe is located on athe beautiful Singel canal: makes it a 100% Amsterdam experience!

Chris Y.

Yelp
My first trip to Amsterdam, I neglected to try the obligatory raw herring. Consequently, a Rick Steve's episode further fueled my desire to try this local food fare. I think we happened upon the same herring stand as on the Steve's show, I asked for and ordered the most popular sandwich, it was delicious. Nice non fishy tasting slices of raw herring on a fresh soft bun, add some raw onions and a couple pickles, yum.

Greg J.

Yelp
So, I'm not quite sure how to write a legitimate review of this place. A legitimate review would need me to have eaten herring from another restaurant as a valid comparison. How do I know whether the herring is delicious or disgusting because of the quality of Stubbe's Haring or because that's just how this odd Dutch idiosyncrasy tastes? I don't think I'll be trying raw herring again anytime soon, unless the states serve it somewhere (which I doubt) so I'll just have to review this place based on how much I liked the raw herring - which I did. I got the herring sandwich-style, topped with chopped raw onion and pickle. I ate half of it, sincerely enjoyed the taste and experience, then forced my comestibly myopic girlfriend to try a taste, which she sincerely disliked. To each his own.

Yelp
so i only had this cuz i wanted to try new foods. this raw herring with sweet pickle and onion was pretty strange for my palate. the fish was a bit fishy, and the texture was a bit slimy... i'm glad i tried this but nope wont do it again.
