"Visiting St. Peter Stiftskulinarium is a spiritual and gastronomic pilgrimage.  Located within the expansive confines of Salzburg’s St. Peter’s Abbey, a 7th-century Benedictine monastery, its existence was first chronicled by Alcuin of York, a scholar and trusted advisor to Charlemagne. Wandering these hallowed halls, one can’t help but imagine Mephistopheles talking shop with Faust, or Christopher Columbus raising a glass of Salzburg Stiegl beer before his historic voyage. While legends persist, the establishment’s age is undeniable. St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, mentioned in documents dating back to 803, claims to be the oldest known operating restaurant in Europe. Over the centuries, St. Peter’s was forced to close a number of times, most notably during Napoleon’s invasion, so it’s not the oldest European restaurant in continuous operation; that honor goes to Sobrino de Botín in Spain, established in 1725. The restaurant’s grandeur extends across 11 dining rooms, each with its own elaborate design and tapestry of captivating anecdotes. From the opulent Baroque Hall to the intimate “citizens’ room” Prälatenstube, the establishment is certainly a feast for the eyes. With an 850-person capacity, it also offers ample opportunity for people-watching. The Stiftskulinarium’s kitchen prides itself on serving upscale regional specialties, including the Viennese classic tafelspitz (slow-simmered beef in broth and vegetables) and Salzburger Nockerl a sweet dessert soufflé made with egg yolk, flour, sugar and vanilla. With changing seasons, the menu embraces diverse local flavors, showcasing fresh fish, game dishes, and often imaginative influences from Mediterranean cuisine. As twilight descends, the restaurant’s renowned Mozart Dinner Concert takes place. Every night, the Baroque Hall’s high stuccoed ceilings are illuminated by candlelight across white gala tables. In collaboration with the Salzburg Concert Society, the dining experience features a three-course menu of authentic 17th- and 18th-century recipes accompanied by live musical performances featuring the work of Salzsburg’s most famous native, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Performers and stewards in fanciful period attire add to the time-warp flair. Know Before You Go Every so often, the restaurant digs deep into its remarkable, 600-position cellar for wine tasting seminars and events. Check the website for more info." - WhiskeyBristles, barbarawoolsey, linkogecko, Sydney Rose

"Dating back to 803, this is considered the oldest restaurant in Europe! Diners are seated in the comfortable, nicely decorated interior of this beautiful historical setting to enjoy great Austrian and Mediterranean food. The menu includes traditional classics such as Tafelspitz, but also premium steaks. They have over 600 wines! Lovely baroque function room on the first floor." - Michelin Inspector

"Dine with Mozart in Europe's Oldest Restaurant Dating back to 803 C.E., the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium is said to be the oldest restaurant in Europe. While there’s a fine contemporary Austrian menu, the history and atmosphere of the various salons and dining rooms are an even bigger draw. The arcaded courtyard in particular is charming and turns into a winter wonderland during the Christmas-market season. The highlight for most travelers will be the Mozart Dinner. Taking place in the stunning ambience of the Baroque Hall, the meal is served with a performance by an ensemble of Mozarteum University Salzburg graduates wearing period costumes—wonderful musicians who also work with renowned orchestras."

We had a truly beautiful experience at this restaurant. The ambiance was unique and inviting, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing meal. The atmosphere stood out with its charming design and calming vibe. What made the evening even more special was the outstanding service from Waiter Cesar. He was incredibly helpful, kind, and attentive, offering excellent recommendations that turned out to be absolutely delicious. Thanks to him, we enjoyed a perfectly curated meal. Highly recommended for both the atmosphere and the impeccable service.

Dining at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium in Salzburg was a truly memorable experience, blending exquisite cuisine with a sense of timeless elegance. Nestled in the heart of the city, this historic restaurant—considered one of the oldest in Europe—offers a unique ambiance that transports you to another era. The stone walls, candlelit arches, and refined decor create a romantic and intimate atmosphere perfect for a special occasion. I chose the Wagyu steak, and it was simply outstanding—tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The side dishes were thoughtfully paired, enhancing the main course without overpowering it. For dessert, I indulged in a traditional Austrian treat with a modern twist. It was light, beautifully presented, and delicious. The wine selection is impressive, with a knowledgeable staff ready to recommend the perfect pairing. I opted for a local red wine that complemented my meal perfectly—smooth, rich, and full-bodied. Service was impeccable throughout the evening—attentive but never intrusive. Every detail, from the presentation of the dishes to the timing between courses, was handled with care. Overall, St. Peter offers not just a meal, but an experience—a harmonious blend of history, atmosphere, and culinary excellence. I would return without hesitation.

A timeless experience in every sense 💣 Dining at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium was one of the highlights of our Salzburg visit. The historic setting alone is worth the visit, but the food truly elevates it to another level. We started with a silky soup that was subtly seasoned and comforting. The green risotto with parmesan crisps and poached cheese was not only visually stunning but also incredibly flavorful with a perfect creamy texture. For the main course, the duck breast was beautifully seared, served over a rich grain base with perfectly cooked vegetables. And finally, the crème brûlée with sorbet was the ideal ending-light, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. Everything from the service to the atmosphere was top-tier. You really feel the weight of history in the room while enjoying food that's modern, creative, and expertly prepared. Highly recommended for a special evening in Salzburg 🖤🖤🖤

Food was nothing to shout about. Beautiful presentation but the taste is mediocre. Stunning environment and even more stunning interior! Wish the person serving us could do better? He’s absolutely gentleman, don’t get me wrong, but… we ordered asparagus for starters, he should’ve recommended something else without asparagus when we picked our mains? Who likes to have repeated ingredients when we can try them all? Nockerl was fluffy, warm but too sweet. Perhaps it’s just the way this dessert is rather than the way this place prepares it. I’d still recommend coming here but it’s really expensive… €40 just for baby veal with asparagus…

I had dinner here on my 1st day in Salzburg and it was a very good experience. Food was good, service was efficient. I had made reservation via google just 30 mins in advanced and they were able yo arrange a nice table for me. Great choice to experience Salzburg old town ambience!

Google
WOW!!!! Our dinner was ABSOLUTELY amazing!! Incredible setting with wonderful food!! Caesar was one of the best servers I have ever had!! The restaurant is elegant and beautiful!! It was established in 803!! This is a must-do if you come to Salzburg!! Just fabulous!!

Google
Food was delicious and unique. The service was great and everything we ate was delicious! The place itself it really interesting and seems tucked away from the main city and feels like a local hangout. There’s something special about being in the oldest restaurant in the world, and that caramel butter. Definitely worth a visit and get the nockerl!

Google
Please eat here on your first day in Salzburg, because you'll want to come back again and again. Or you could be like me, came here on my last night and now wishing I could've had every meal here. I made a reservation which was a good idea. I almost didn't go in because of the loud music in the courtyard, but once you are inside it's like you've stepped through a time portal. Service is impeccable. Like they actually want you there. That salted caramel butter and bread cost 6 euro. But so worth it. Pumpkin and orange soup, amazing. But the "curd cheese nougat dumplings"? Don't be thrown off by the name, this dessert will change your life. Because once back home, you will now be forever dreaming about it.

Yelp
Came here on our last night in Salzburg to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. It was THE BEST meal I had while visiting. We started off with a couple of cheeses (Voralsberg, a chablis cheese, and a roquefort) and the bread service. We skipped getting any apps. For entrees, I got Pete's roast beef and my husband got the schnitzel and the risotto. The roast beef was absolutely amazing. The red wine gravy reduction was to die for. The roast beef was so tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were thick and creamy. I savored every bite and was so happy to have leftovers to enjoy the next morning. My husband liked both of his dishes. They were prepared simple but delicious. The risotto was very different with the blackberries. And the parmesan chips were pretty cool too. Service was fantastic as well. I was so happy to end our vacation on a great note.

Yelp
This was our favorite meal in our week in Austria. The restaurant is modern and fun in a really old environment (it's supposedly the oldest restaurant in Europe but I didn't dig too far into how or if this is proven because even if it isn't true, it's still absolutely worth coming here). The food was delicious and unique, the ambiance was, again, just really fun. We went at a really odd hour (2pm on a Wednesday) because we heard it gets booked and is hard to get a table without a reservation so we just went as soon as we arrived in Salzburg and were able to snag a table right away. Despite the timing the restaurant was still buzzing. We had a few drinks (all the cocktails we had were amazing) and in general had a great time. I don't remember exactly what dishes we got but enjoyed them all.

Yelp
Wonderful place to eat in Salzburg Make a reservation very easy to do on line using a link from St Peter's website Food was wonderful Beautiful and whimsical decorating for Christmas

Christine L.

Yelp
Cool place and amazing food. Bread and butter homemade was delish Monkfish prepared perfectly. Christmas goose was tender and amazing. The dessert was different- egg whites and a sour base. Holiday decor. Helpful service. Highly recommended and great advent bar next door

Jon P.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. Everything. The ambiance, food, drinks, dessert and service. Absolutely must go.

Catherine M.

Yelp
Were here for Mozart dinner, the setting is absolutely stunning. We enjoyed the entertainment the musicians were on point and I found the male singer to be so entertaining. The meal was ok, the dessert left mych to be desired in my opinion, way too sweet for me. Achiuce woukd gave been appreciated. Cost varies depending upon the seating, so be aware.

Yelp
This restaurant was so unique and beautiful. It is speculated to be the oldest restaurant in the world. The service was great, and our waiter was super helpful upon ordering. Food and drink reviews below! Drink: Raspberry Margarita: 5/5 Delicious and superrr stiff. Food: Bread and Butter: 10/5 Omg. This butter was a gourmet version of Texas Roadhouse's butter. It was so delicious, and so was the bread. Chicken Piccata: 5/5 Delish! The combination of the breaded chicken and pasta with the different red and white sauces was magical. The waiter sold me on this dish upon ordering, and I am glad he did! Desserts: Calamansi Crème Brûlée: 5/5 This had a lemony tang to it and it was so good. Salzburger Nockerl: 4/5 This dessert was wild. A lady eating alone next to our table invited us over to split this dish with her. She used Google translate to tell us she travelled an hour away from home to try this restaurant and this specific dessert because it is famous and only uses 3 ingredients: egg yolk, flour, and sugar. The dessert was delicious, but I could only eat so much. The texture and flavor was a little too unique for me. I did think the Crème Brûlée was better. Overall, this place is a must visit if you are in Salzburg!

Jessica D.

Yelp
Love the food and the atmosphere. We stopped by for a late lunch. The food, while not inexpensive, was really good. I had the pear soup and bread. Yes, you really only get ONE piece of bread if you order it separately = this isn't your budget-friendly touron restaurant. (People who want big, American-sized portions and low prices should go elsewhere.) Service was fine and fast too; friendly, which isn't often the case in Europe. I really loved the soup and the cool atmosphere. It isn't often that you have the opportunity to eat at one of the oldest restaurants in Europe. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an Austrian meal.

Bo B.

Yelp
We came in November but this place was already heavily decorated in cute Christmas decor. This restaurant is quite expensive charging 34 euros for the veal schnitzel but it was quite good. There are many private rooms and banquet rooms in this place. Service is generally good.

Julie C.

Yelp
So glad I went ahead and made a reservation, even though I was only in Salzburg for the day!! it was absolutely magically decorated for Christmas, so warm and inviting. The food of course was great but the highlight was the dessert. It is worth spending $25 and having something once in a lifetime. If you're hesitant about going here... Don't be. Totally worth it.

Jim W.

Yelp
Amazing to eat in undoubtedly my oldest restaurant in my experience ! The atmosphere is unmatched, and as we sat in grotto cut out of the mountainside, the room was rich with history! Service and the singers who performed standards from Sound of Music were outstanding! The singers were opera level qualified, and their performance was special for our visit. We enjoyed backed chicken with a side of Austrian styled potatoes with Carrots and it was piping hot and arrived quickly! Our dessert were meringues over a think cranberry glaze! Highly recommended!

Felicia C.

Yelp
Service was impeccable from the time we walked into the door until we left! Every little touch including the celebratory dessert and singing was wonderful!

Chelsa Zimbelman Z.

Yelp
I was so excited to eat at the oldest restaurant in Europe.... What a let down. We paid $450 for three people for a set Christmas dinner menu. The food arrived cold almost like it sat back in the window forever before it was brought out. The drinks arrived half way thru our meal. Our server was inattentive and never asked how our food was. THE FOOD WAS FOR THE MOST PART DISGUSTING!!! Literally I have never had a dessert I didn't eat... until St Peters. The restaurant it self was nothing to write home about. It was meh... SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

Jamie S.

Yelp
A little difficult to find because it's in a small section of the square, but we asked around and found it through a small entryway. Wow! The decor is absolutely amazing and very modern with pop culture vibes. Knowing this is one of the oldest restaurants IN THE WORLD piqued my curiosity and we could not leave without stopping in. The beer was beer. Served in a beautiful glass, and cold. But the dessert that is nothing but meringue designed to pay homage to the three largest mountain in their region was mind- blowing. Extremely sweet so they serve it with a very tart raspberry preserves to help keep it balanced. It was delicious and should not not be attempted as a dessert for one! Look around while you are there. Looks the age of the building, you can see the original architecture and it's beautiful.

Giorgio S.

Yelp
Food: perfect... as described ..maybe better Service: Perfect. Really kindly and available on every request Location: Everybody has to visit it...

Jill M.

Yelp
My husband and I have dined in MANY high-end restaurants in our lives, too many to count. St Peter was in the TOP TWO. Every need/want was met before we even had to ask. Our server had an amazing professionalism and sense of humor and delivered such a personalized experience. Not 2nd to the service was the food and the beverage service. Every bite was as a good as the last. The food was so "whole" and so flavorful and was absolutely made with love. The atmosphere was cozy, warm, and modern but not "trendy", rather it was unique and the vibe was "Good Vibes Only" ( you will see what I mean when you go - look above the bar!). When I did get a bit cool, our waiter even wrapped me in a blanket! Again, one of top two dining experiences in my 51 years!

Richard W.

Yelp
Great ambience under the shaded protection of a cliff side and decorative overhangs. Tables are close but separated by small cute trees. Wine list is deep and wide and a great opportunity to try little know Austrian varietals like St Laurent or Blaufrankisch. Prime boiled Salzburg organic beef - tender although appearing well done. Comes with creamy bread horseradish, cream spinach (more like a sauce), apple horseradish and chives sauce. Veal goulash - so glad for this one. Zesty and soul-warming. Served with beech mushrooms and a wonderful red smetana sauce. Spinach spaetzle on the side - I guess everyone has to try once. Don't expect a lot of flavor. Homemade tagliolini Creamy truffle thick glue like consistency. This dish was overbearing and the only one I definitely wouldn't order again. Think: heart attack on a plate. By a sizeable margin, the quality here outpaces all that we tasted and experienced during ten days in a Germany. The service, presentation and cleanliness are outstanding. A highly recommended find!

Yelp
Where to begin? Okay...so, I read the many reviews of this place and knew what I was getting ourselves into. Honestly, I even debated with myself whether I'd even show up or just go back to the beer hall from our dinner the other day. However, I decided to give it a try considering the history. Let me just say that ---- I ate here, the oldest restaurant IN THE WORLD! Who knew? I still can't get over how that's even possible. Besides that, everything else was a blur. Ambience was weird and food was overrated. However, service was quite impressive. (Btw, the bread and butter is "mandatory" (LOL!) and charges you 6 euros per person whether you like it or not) Would I go back? Ummmmm

KJ O.

Yelp
Tik tok showed me St Peter's the day before arriving in Saltzberg and I needed to check it out. It had a funky vibe with neon lights, foliage, and twinkle lights. We had a fabulous waiter and the food was alright. My biggest surprise was that they made an excellent smoked Manhattan and an aperol spritz, both of which I'm not a huge fan of. The smoke gave the drink such a smooth flavor, almost like a wine. Could this be the beginning of my love affair with a good Manhattan ? Only time will tell.

Michael B.

Yelp
They've been around since the 800s so it makes sense that they'd have good food! The restaurant opens for lunch, closes, and then opens for dinner. I highly recommend you make reservations for your visit because it is very popular. For lunch you can walk in for a table without trouble. Dinner, you can't. The seating is pretty much all outdoors but covered by a concrete or uncovered in a courtyard. It's all open air. If you don't want to pay the high menu prices stick to deserts because they're very good, especially the apple strudel. Skip the soups. Staff is nice and does speak English.

Lauren G.

Yelp
Highly recommend coming to Saint Peter's, if you aren't able to do their Mozart's dinner, the restaurant below is absolutely fantastic. This is a claimed to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, so a fun fact you can share with your friends when you go back home. Not only is it the oldest restaurant in Europe, but they also offer fantastic service and food. I had two separate reservations, a party of four and a party of five. Went an hour before our reservation and asked if they could combine the two tables together, they said they could. They placed us all at a large table inside and were super accommodating. The service was fantastic. Our food and drinks came very fast. And at the end for the birthday boy they even brought out a dessert with candle which was super sweet. The food was very good every one of us ate our entire meal. I would definitely come back here! Pros: service, food, atmosphere Cons: none

Scott F.

Yelp
While on a river cruise along the Danube, an optional tour brought us to Salzburg. We probably had 50-60 people in our group and serving that many people at once is a challenge, but they handled it very well. A hot soup took the chill off before the main course of schnitzel and potato's. Eating the worlds oldest restaurant ( been around since at least 803 A.D.) is not something I had ever considered before this trip. Check that of my list!!

Tiffany C.

Yelp
The interior is a little tacky and gives off Miami vibes. It's cute and fun but not really what I imagined the inside to look like. I would've liked it to be more classy and traditional but I guess lawn chairs and gorillas coming out the walls are good too. It took a good 5 min for a host to come and help us get seated. A cute older couple was waiting before us, so who knows how long they were waiting. The service was nothing amazing. They were very short-staffed and when you are sitting in the back corner it's hard to get any attention from the servers. There was one amazing server with great suggestions BUT once it got busier he wasn't really around anymore. The food was good, the tomato and burrata were amazing. My boyfriend got the steak that was overpriced for how small and thick the cute was, and not cooked to his liking BUT the hollandaise sauce was delicious with the steak so it made up for it. I also had some truffle salt with me that I sprinkled on top.

Matthew H.

Yelp
This place is full of history. They turn this place into a small Christmas market during the holidays. This is also considered to be the world's oldest restaurant.

Dionne L.

Yelp
Wow!!! This place is incredible. I had the traditional Salzburg dessert and it is a must try while you are in the city.

Felix B.

Yelp
I am forced to write reviews because many reviewers have no clue about rating food. Service: For a high-end end restaurant you expect great service. The waitress we had was pleasant and very attentive, 5 Stars. Ambience: For the oldest restaurant in Europe, there was high hope. The decor was disjointed at best. You would have no idea that you are eating at an Abby, except for the super uncomfortable chair and bench that is offered, 1 Star. The food was terrible. Let's start with the mandatory bread at €6. It was 2 cold pieces of rye bread. Like you would feed to pigeons in a park. That bread was served with some strange whipped sweer butter. Apperiser were oysters with some sweet foam. They had two other un appetizing options instead of the foam. Main course was Monkfish wrapped in bacon with gnocchi and Shnitzel with small whole potatoes. Horrible, somehow the bacon was dry with no flovor the monkfish was not seasoned, then the gnocchi was a big blob of uncooked flour and potato. Then came the basic Shnitzel. NO seasoning on the crust. This thing was dry and the potoes were basic. Desert was same as the rest of the meal. We had apple strudel that came with whipped cream, which had no sweetness or any hint of flavor. The vanile ice cream was just basic. Now for the strudel: the dough was dry and flavorless. The filling was not fresh. My rating is Zero Stars. Save your money, time and taste buds.

Shari S.

Yelp
This was an elegant restaurant with charming Austrian decor which served traditional specialties. We really enjoyed the homemade bread served with a variety of butters and afterwards I had roast chicken with creamy polenta and roasted vegetables which was delicious! The atmosphere was something out of an Austrian fairytale with cozy corners, crisp white linens and polished dark wood. It was beautiful during our February visit so I can only imagine what it must be like at Christmastime!

Mary H.

Yelp
Good ambiance, doesn't feel like it's that old though. It was a bit weird. I thought the food was good but way too expensive. I'd pass on it if I went back to Salzburg.

Bailey B.

Yelp
Incredible ambiance and beautiful decor. My group of 10 came when they opened and we were able to get a table without a reservation. The food was wonderful as well. Don't pass on the bread!

Marida G.

Yelp
The food and the service were awesome! I tried to order the same food as Mozart or Christopher Columbus ordered, unfortunately the server didn't know.

Nicholas K.

Yelp
It's not just about the food, which was tasty, but this was about the chamber orchestra and opera singers, who were all top notch. The acoustics in this place rival the most intimate convert hall, and having dinner with period music is probably the best way to enjoy a cultural dinner experience. It was incredible all around, from the sound to the ground, the food and the mood!

Lenny L.

Yelp
It's a one of a kind experience. Hearing that this is the oldest restaurant in Europe intrigue me. This location has been a restaurant or a food establishment since 803 AD. Important minds and creative artists have been in this space for centuries so to be partaking food in a place of this significance was satisfying for me. It can be intimidating walking in, no one was there too assist me but I persisted and someone came and helped me and sat me quickly. Being the oldest restaurant I was expecting the decor to be traditional but everything was quite modern, it was beautiful, and a counterpoint to having a claim of the oldest restaurant as their walls where adorned by modern art. I asked the waiter for his recommendation and he recommended the prime boiled beef. It was different and I wouldn't find that easily in other places. It was simple in taste, and you need to dress it up. I had a glass of cuvee. The service is slow so keep that in mind if you're in a hurry. But, such a unique spot in the world. I'm really happy to pretend I traveled in time and dined with Mozart.

Markus D.

Yelp
To me, this is one of the coolest restaurants in Salzburg specifically for the ambience there. I don't think there is any more beautiful restaurants even in the whole country. A more than 1000 year heritage combined with modern luxurious design is something absolutely unique and very well done here. The food is great, and you can try some local specialties. I absolutely recommend to make a reservation here.

Christina L.

Yelp
For the price, I was really disappointed by the food and presentation here. I ordered the pike perch (a white fish) for 35 euros, and a tiny piece of bland white fish with literally 6 leaves of raw spinach arrived on a plate. The plating and presentation was terrible for a "fine dining" restaurant. My partner ordered a wiener schnitzel, and he said it tasted the same as every other schnitzel at other restaurants. I know we were paying for the ambiance and the unique setting (the fact that it is rumoured to be Europe's oldest restaurant), but I did not expect the food to taste so mediocre. Too bad! Btw, they charge 4 euros cover fee per person.

Brittany S.

Yelp
If you're not familiar with parking for this area make sure you find paid parking in Parking Garage B. It took us a while to locate, but the staff was helpful when we called to ask for directions. Definitely use a map app to help direct your walk to the location. The food and service were great. The atmosphere was intimate, warm, and cozy!

Nette T.

Yelp
Yes it's a bit touristy, but this was our first time in Salzburg so of course we had to go. This is a restaurant within the walls of St Peter's Abbey and is considered the oldest restaurant in Europe when it was mentioned in 803AD. Apparently Emperor Charlemagne, Christopher Columbus and Mozart dined here too. The room we were dining is upstairs and had candles and chandeliers. We were served from a menu from Mozart's time which consisted of a soup, chicken and dessert. Not memorable but decent enough. When the lights went down the quintet and opera singers came in, dresses in 19th century clothing and sat down and started playing highlights of Le Figaro in between courses. They also played Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for those who aren't familiar with classical music (like SO). I really enjoyed our night here, I didn't mind at all that is was touristy. Listening to classical music in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart was worth it.

Nancy F.

Yelp
I am so disappointed and was honestly looking for an amazing dining experience in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. What I received was subpar food, abysmal customer service and being made to feel like the 'ugly American' throughout what felt like a pretentious tourist trap. We sit down and there is this extremely loud party in our area of approximately a dozen people. I understand they are celebrating and boisterous and I certainly do not want to ruin their experience. We ask the server if we can be moved to another part of the restaurant but we're told there is no other part. I said to my husband I was surprised that the restaurant was so small. Well, when leaving the restaurant we come to find a beautiful section of what must have been the original part of the restaurant. We pass a staff member to ask why we weren't moved and he says, "But you would have eaten all alone. I told the party to try to keep it down." 1) maybe you should let the customer decide their preference rather than lying about there being no other space in which to sit. 2) you pinned it on us to the other customers?! I wanted to order their specialty veal or fish, trying to determine pricing and was a little confused about the description of 'please enquire with our staff for our daily offers'. I understand it may be lost in translation but I asked about their special offers. The waiter flipped my menu to the main course page and told me he thought their menu was perfectly adequate. As if I were looking for a blue plate special at a diner. Ok, so we order (by the way, the one excellent recommendation was the wine. Thus 1 point. Pricey but delicious). Silverware is placed and we're now instructed as to the proper order to use our silverware. Are you kidding me?! I could go on and on about even more incidents but I'm sure you're tired of reading if you made it this far. I'll top things off with the food quality. The soup could easily be mistaken for canned College Inn broth, veal was extremely fatty, and the Crème fraîche served with our pumpkin dumplings was curdled and spoiled! (See photo)By the way, I have a perfectly adequate palette and this was not a matter of preference. At this point I dare not complain and further risk admonishment from my server. I've dined in the finest restaurants around the world and have never been treated in this manner. Avoid like the plague!

Yelp
One of our best experiences ever. Anywhere. We were welcomed and seated at a beautiful table right on our reservation time. Our waiter, Attila was FANTASTIC. Somehow, he recommended menu choices that fit each of us perfectly. We adjusted his suggestions a bit because we weren't particularly hungry...and then he suggested some fantastic wines. We shared a mussel entree for our appetizer, and my wife had a cream pasta topped with shaved truffles, and I had an impeccably prepared duck breast. The entire staff (shout out to Valentina!) was pleasant, and never acted rushed, even though you could see them very busy both before and after a visit to our table. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.

Yelp
An altercation here the day after Christmas: My mother had paid for a drink and specifically asked if she could give a deposit for the mug. This lady in the photo I attached said OK and then asked for an extra 3 euros for the deposit. She even wrote it down. After we had lunch inside, my mother returned the mug to the lady but she wouldn't give back my mom's money, claimed it never happened, dismissed my mom entirely, kept speaking German etc. Her boss was of no help. My dad, sister, mom, aunt and I spent 30 minutes explaining what happened and this lady just kept denying it. Finally we went to the supervisor of the restaurant who reprimanded the lady, gave us our money back, but still claimed that we were wrong. This was obviously not about the money. It was about bad practice especially towards tourists. It didn't help that this assistant to the lady kept trying to grab my phone when he thought I was taking a picture of them. While the supervisor partially corrected the situation, he really should have apologized on behalf of the restaurant and the lady. We had spent a lovely 2 hours eating lunch there for 6 people, and it ended with a battle that lasted 30 minutes of our time. We left effectively feeling violated and completely disregarded by the Austrian staff. My advice is to avoid this place if you want to be treated with respect.

Yelp
The Mozart dinner they do here over the Christmas holidays is hands down one of my favorite experiences in Europe. Period. (And I've been to a lot of different places in Europe.) It's absolutely magical. You'd think it would be touristy, but you see a lot of locals here for special occasions like birthdays, too. And as soon as the mini orchestra starts playing and the opera singers start singing, you don't care if it's touristy. The baroque hall is absolutely beautiful, the decorations for Christmas are amazing, and the food and wine are also fantastic. I highly recommend the VIP option, which includes just slightly better food, a complimentary glass of champagne, and seating in the first 2 rows (so you almost feel like you're at a private concert). Instead of spending your money at fancy Michelin-star restaurants or other expensive adventures, save it for this. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This historic spot on Salzburg has the famous Mozart dinner and Sound of Music shows upstairs. It also has a gorgeous and historic restaurant with set menus or a la cart specialties. It is a fine dining spot but didn't feel stuffy or pretentious. The service was great. We came for diner and enjoyed Austrian specialities in a perfect fairy tale setting. My friend had her small Austrian wedding here. It's definitely a special occasion spot. Highly recommend making a booking. A special experience in Salzburg!

Yelp
Everything we ordered was very salty. Not worth the price tags. Nice ambience though.

Yelp
Fabulous food and a totally wonderful evening My wife and I went with our tour group recently to St. Peter Stiftskeller for an incredible evening of delicious food and gracious hospitality. From the moment we arrived, the staff were very courteous and welcoming. Then came the food. WOW! Each dish added its own enhancement to our meal. Although I had already had wiener schnitzel the two previous meals (I had to choose my entree for this dinner before we came on the trip), it was nonetheless delicious in so many ways. The schnitzel batter was not overly cooked and the chicken was juicy and delicious. For our dessert we were treated to their famous Salzburger Nockerl. The dessert had a lingonberry base topped with 3 scoops of meringue style mounds. It was quite good. We learned that if you were to order on a chance dining with them, it could take up to 30 minutes to prepare. Nice to not to have to wait. Everyone had a delightful evening as well as a fantastic meal. I would most certainly recommend coming here for a meal if you happen to be coming to Salzburg, or you live in the area and simply have not been there yet.

Yelp
A genuinely don't know why anyone is rating this negatively. It's not a place to go if you're pinching pennies. It's a place to go when you want fine dining and excellent service. Make a reservation, do it right, order everything that looks delicious, and you will have a wonderful evening.

Yelp
This place is so amazing for so many different reasons. The oldest restaurant in Europe. 803 A.D... No really. It's carved into the stone at foothill of a small mountain. It's gorgeous on the inside and on the outside. A word of caution though... Do not try to use your car navigation to find this place. You will fail. The food was as good as the ambiance. The staff was professional and nice. I tried both the chicken and the steak and was very pleased. Dessert was a bit sweet for me (but I'm not a dessert kind of guy to be honest). This is another must dine spot if in Salzburg. Be sure to tour the monastery and see the fort as well.

Yelp
This was the best food I have eaten will on my trip to Europe. If you don't come her whole in Austria there is something wrong with you. Awesome food, drinks, and dessert. Everything was perfect. I definitely recommend this too everyone!!!

Yelp
I really wish I would have listened to the reviews regarding discrimination towards Americans and not went here for dinner. As soon as we sat down the hostess asked the table beside us if they would like to move to a different table. They were confused by this question (as were we) and said no. I asked the waiter for a dirty martini (I had a few during my time here, so I thought it was a commonly known drink) he told me very loudly and angerily that they could absolutely not make that drink. I was visibly upset with tears in my eyes, so he was very friendly the rest of our time there. The food was absolutely fantastic and I didn't feel the tourist trap vibes at all. I just wish everyone would have been a little nicer. :(

Yelp
St. Peter's OK the restaurant maybe established from 803 AD but they do NOT know how to cook risotto. Doesn't the chef taste his food. Auff. Yes, the presentation was fine but the quality not so.

Yelp
1. They claim to be the oldest restaurant in Europe which is fun and definitely worth a stop. 2. The food is good and the service is friendly, try and get a table back in the cave if possible. It is much cooler there on a hot day. 3. For men definitely recommend wearing something with a collar and ladies something on the nice end as well. We felt pretty underdressed when we went here for lunch, but this is not something that should stop you from going in if your on a walking tour or something.
