"The Self-Realization Fellowship Church of All Religions was founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920 and is based in Los Angeles. As the story goes, the Lake Shrine Temple emerged after development created a basin which naturally filled with spring water and Everett McElroy, a construction supervisor for Fox Studios, purchased the property in 1940 and began to develop it with gardens, a windmill, and house boat. An oil executive bought the property several years later and had a vision instructing him to sell the property to Yogananda, who went on to build out the property as a holy site for the Self-Realization Fellowship, opening it in 1950. The site includes a sarcophagus which holds the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi and a new temple finished in 1996. While there are regular services and meditation hours, it's also a great place to just hang out, enjoy the gardens, and read a book." - No Style Studio

"Tucked away in Los Angeles’ wealthy Pacific Palisades neighborhood is the sprawling Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, a ten-acre campus devoted to peaceful natural vistas and spiritual enlightenment which has played host to a number of pop icons as well as the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi.  The site was founded in 1950 by famed yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, which brought the teachings of Eastern Philosophy to countless Westerners in the mid-20th century. Despite the bustling neighborhood surrounding it, the shrine sits on acres of quiet land that features lush gardens and its very own lake, inviting guests to take a step back from the fast-paced chaos of modern LA. The are also a number of constructed features on the grounds such as a windmill that was left by the previous owners of the land which has been converted to a chapel; an inclusive monument honoring some of the world’s major religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism; and possibly most remarkable, the relatively simple tomb-shrine of Mahatma Gandhi which actually holds a portion of his remains. Operated by the Self-Realization Fellowship, the lake shrine has played host to some of the biggest names in pop music of the 20th century. The King, Elvis Presley is said to have visited the shrine and become so enamored with it that he struck up a lifelong relationship with the president of the Fellowship. In addition, the funeral of late-Beatle George Harrison was also held on the grounds as he was a devotee of the Fellowship. Today the lake shrine is still open to visitors who need to step away from the smog and noise of the city, so next time that life-changing audition falls through, take a stroll through the grounds and realize that all will be well." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

From coastline nature-vibe to Fine dinings. Los Angeles has the luxury of Rodeo and the tranquility of coastal nature. It has the bustle of downtown and Hollywood, and the harmony of Malibu and Palisades. This melting pot is a mixture of various races, cultures, and extreme collisions. It is colorful and beautiful. This place, I was hesitating to come because it is a little far away from me. But, this is one of the best places I had been in the world. Tranquility does heal! The harmony that is beyond the human world has magically healing power. The light reflects those naughty sparkling on the river while the ducks are just sliding on its surface, I was so moved that I was watching all this happened in my eyes. The leaves of bamboo swings in the wind at the same time, I can hear not far away the springs making beautiful sound. And The ripples on the lake were as dazzling as jewels under the sunlight. Just as I was intoxicated by this, two ducks paddled across the lake. They seemed like creatures from another world. They were so innocent and cute. I had a fxxking great afternoon dating with myself here! One of my best days. Wow. A great great place. Entrance fee is free too.

One of my favorite places to visit. Been coming here for years. It’s such a peaceful place that centers you and is a great place to come relax and meditate. The lake is great, the walk around it is wonderful and the whole vibe is serene. You need to make a reservation before you come so make sure you do that a day or two in advance.

It’s a beautiful zen garden! You need reservation. They have limited hours. If you get there late, the gates are closed. We were visiting LA for one day. They let us in. We did not visit inside the temples. They have group meditation if one is interested.

Thank you Guru Yogananda for this beautiful place you created for people of all regions to come and meditate here. The good energy here is immense. You will feel immense gratitude and peace. Part of Ghandi’s ashes are entombed here. Definitely recommend 100%

Beautiful and peaceful place to visit. It is free to visit, you just need to make a reservation ahead of time. It honors many walks of faith, with plaques and iconography for them. The lake is full of HUGE koi, turtles, ducks, and swans (Please don’t feed them). There are also many beautiful trees and flowers. There are many beautiful benches to sit, meditate, and enjoy the views. It also feels very cleansing to the soul to be there. You can meditate in the houseboat. The area around the ashes of Gandhi is especially powerful. It can be almost overwhelming (in a good way). To me, it feels like God’s presence. If you have any spiritual sensitively, I highly recommend coming here! There are bathrooms on site, a small gift shop with items from India, and a small museum about the history of the shrine and fellowship. Area is small; you could walk around the lake in probably 15 minutes easily, but I would encourage folks to stop, sit, and soak it all in. Looking forward to our next visit

Tucked away in the bustling heart of Pacific Palisades lies one of Los Angeles's most enchanting hidden gems - the Self Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. This 10-acre spiritual sanctuary offers a transformative escape from the city's relentless energy, proving that peace can indeed be found within LA's sprawling metropolis. The moment you step through the entrance, you're transported into what feels like a carefully curated slice of paradise. The centerpiece is a natural spring-fed lake, its surface dancing with koi fish and the occasional family of swans. The walking path that circles the lake takes you through meticulously maintained gardens featuring flora from around the world - from towering palm trees to delicate lotus flowers. What sets Lake Shrine apart from other meditation gardens is its unique architectural elements. The gleaming white Gandhi-King World Peace Memorial contains a portion of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes, lending the space historical gravitas. The authentic Dutch windmill chapel, golden lotus archway, and Mississippi River houseboat add unexpected whimsy to the spiritual atmosphere. Each structure tells its own story while contributing to the harmonious whole. While the Lake Shrine welcomes visitors seeking both spiritual connection and simple relaxation, it maintains a monastery-like quietude that demands respect. The staff and volunteers do an excellent job of preserving the contemplative atmosphere while remaining approachable and helpful. Be prepared to encounter moments of unexpected beauty: sunlight filtering through bamboo groves, the sound of wind chimes carried on ocean breezes, or the sight of meditation benches positioned for perfect lake views. These thoughtful details reveal the deep care invested in creating this sanctuary. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, a harried Angeleno in need of peace, or simply someone who appreciates masterful landscaping, the Self Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine offers a profound reminder of how urban spaces can nurture both body and soul. In a city that often prioritizes spectacle over substance, this sanctuary stands as a testament to the power of stillness and contemplation.

I visit the Lakeshrine whenever I’m in LA to pay respects to the great teacher, Paramahansa Yogananda and the lineage of gurus who came before him. The Shrine is a beautiful and serene place where one can spend a good hour or two in quiet and peace. There are two gift shops on the property as well which are worth visiting.

A profound and important place. I visited her while in the midst of grieving for my father, who passed away just before we travelled to California from the UK. I will forever treasure the tranquility of this place (despite being surrounded by the busy Sunset Blvd and its constant car noise) and for the critical role it played in my healing. There are plenty of benches and quiet areas in which to meditate and reflect. My favourite was on a lawn next to four palm trees, pictured below.
