In January 2025, upon learning about our trip to St. Louis, our friend immediately recommended here. When we arrived, we waited for 1hour. The space felt warm and inviting, with charming décor. Sitting at the counter gave us a view of the staff preparing drinks.
We ordered coffee served in mugs featuring the city flag, avocado salad with fried avocado—crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and surprisingly meaty in texture—and it was absolutely delicious. The Carne Adovada, a New Mexican-style stewed pork dish, was paired with green chili and red chili sauce, served alongside tortillas. The sauce had a hint of bitterness but was incredibly flavorful. It was our first time trying cornmeal pancakes, which had a fluffier texture and a taste similar to corn cakes, with a natural sweetness from the corn. We also tried pozole, a Mexican hominy soup that looked spicy but had a surprisingly light and refreshing flavor.
The staff was enthusiastic and welcoming. Although parking was a bit challenging, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. After adding a 20% tip, our meal totaled $52, which we felt was very reasonable. If you’re looking to explore Southwestern cuisine, Southwest Diner is definitely worth a visit!
