Sister Pie Sets Summer Pop-Up Schedule as Lauded Bakery Plots Next Move | Eater Detroit

"The award-winning bakery's founder, Lisa Ludwinski, is running a phased "summer interlude" (announced in May) rather than closing: she asserts this is no farewell tour and says some of the online conjecture has "amused and frustrated her." One person even asked how retirement was treating her. The pop-up events and a staggered reopening are intended as a period of reassessment — Ludwinski says the next two months should help shape her plans as she writes what she calls "the final draft" of the bakery's future — and she is taking her time amid uncertainty from federal tariffs and other variables that affect the cost of running a small business. The bakery popped up at a Hamtramck brewery the day before it planned to reopen for breakfast; the reopening/staggered schedule runs through early September. Schedule: Tuesday, July 22 — Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Friday, July 25 — Lunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday, July 26 — market appearance; Tuesday, August 5 — Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Friday, August 8 — Lunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday, August 9 — market appearance; Tuesday, August 19 — Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Friday, August 22 — Lunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday, August 23 — market appearance; Tuesday, September 2 — Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Friday, September 5 — Lunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday, September 6 — market appearance." - Ashok Selvam

Detroit’s Sister Pie Announces Temporary Closure | Eater Detroit

"Founder Lisa Ludwinski — a cookbook author and 2019 James Beard Award finalist who previously worked for Christina Tosi’s Milk Bar — is pausing operations at her acclaimed pie bakery, which debuted in 2015 and quickly earned national recognition (including an Eater Young Gun nod). The shop will temporarily close to the general public, with Saturday, June 8 listed as the last day in its present incarnation, so Ludwinski can undertake “a period of rest and radical reconfiguration” amid concerns about a looming financial crisis and recession and her view that the business isn’t working in its current state. Although the duration and ultimate form of the relaunch are unknown, the space will still host occasional events and pop-ups, fulfill special orders, and offer baking classes, and she’s encouraging supporters to visit before the closure to help her staff." - Ashok Selvam

"Sister Pie is a nationally renowned Detroit bakery with a fresh rotation of pie flavors rolling out monthly. Expect the unexpected in seasonal pie flavors, ranging from Michigan strawberry, rhubarb, and lavender; toasted marshmallow butterscotch or the crowd favorite, salted maple. The shop, helmed by Eater Young Gun Lisa Ludwinski (2015), emphasizes the needs of its employees and surrounding neighbors by hiring from within the community and regularly checking in with customers to find out what they wanted to see stocked in the bakery. Take a seat in the eclectic dining area featuring cute vintage dishes and seasonal floral touches throughout the space, courtesy of Coriander Kitchen and Farm. When planning for the holidays, be sure to pay close attention to Sister Pie’s pre-ordering process so as not to miss out on the most popular pies in the city. Vibe check: Be your own pastry chef at home by learning some of the tricks of the trade by attending one of Sister Pie’s classes. Learn how to make all-butter pie dough, savory hand pies, and more." - Serena Maria Daniels
