Warning. This review is completely biased because I LOVE HELLO KITTY. I came to Puroland 9 years ago and visited again this year. I think any and every time I visit Japan (which is not often), I will have to visit Puroland! My husband and I spent the ENTIRE day (from opening to close) at Puroland and I still felt that I could have spent more time there to shop.
Getting to Puroland - Getting here is a bit complicated from central Tokyo. We had to transfer trains 3 times to different lines. We had our hotel concierge help us map out the trains we had to use. It took us about an hour to get to Puroland. When we got off the train, it was an easy walk to find Puroland. Check out all of the features at the train station when you reach Puroland! You'll see Hello Kitty and her friends all over the Tama center station!
Rides - The amusement park is completely indoors and has 2 "rides" tailored to small children. One ride is similar to Disney's "it's a small world" boat ride and lasts around 10 minutes. The second ride is a photo op ride, which I don't think it worth the wait unless if you want to take 6 photos during the "ride" which is less than 5 min long. And then pay for said photos at the end of the ride.
"Fast pass" - If you don't want to wait in line for the rides or wait in line for activities you can purchase passes for each ride/activity to cut the line. For example, the wait time for the boat ride was 50 minutes and this wait time didn't get any better from 11AM onwards. I didn't want to waste time in line, so I ended up paying ~$5 USD per person to cut the boat ride line during the next available time window. Note that the pass is only good for that one feature/ride for a given time window (e.g. Boat Ride from 1:30-2:30) and you have to buy separate passes for each feature/ride if you want to cut the line for.
Shopping - There is TONS of shopping to be done and tons of shopping spots. Basically after almost each feature, you exit to a shopping area. There's a main store at the front entrance, however there were items at the smaller shopping areas that I couldn't find at the front entrance shop. So my shopping method was basically, if I love it, I buy it immediately so that I don't have to back track. The main entrance shop has a lot more candy and snacks to purchase such as Hello Kitty shaped almond cookies, rice crackers, etc. However for example, the shop after the Hello Kitty house tour had Sanrio shaped sugar cubes and men's ties that I couldn't find at the main entrance shop.
Visiting Hello Kitty - If you go through the Hello Kitty house tour (see her tea area, bath, bed, closet, etc), the last part of the tour is taking a picture with Hello Kitty. You have to wait in line to go through the house tour, and then before you exit, there's a line to take a picture with Hello Kitty. I don't know what you'd do if you didn't want a photo with Hello Kitty - perhaps you just have to ask someone to let you out? Anyway, while you're in line to take a picture with Hello Kitty, you can purchase a flower to give to Hello Kitty. In return, when you meet her, she'll give you a small gift. These gifts are limited each day, and the gift I received for the flower was a Hello Kitty puroland pin/ribbon. After your photo session, you can purchase your photo in the gift shop at the exit.
Gudetama airplane area - This was a bit too crowded for me to fully enjoy. We waited in line for this and walked through the game area and photo op area, but the games had long lines that we weren't interested in waiting for. These games were geared more towards young'uns.
Little Twin Stars area - The line for this was short! So I waited, watched a short video (it had English subs) and then we got to go into Little Twin Stars' house which was a fun area to take photos, lay on their bed, etc.
Shows - There's a lot of shows, I've just never had the time to watch them. There's a main show in the center of the amusement park like a parade. It'll get crowded so you probably want to get a seat or balcony spot before it starts, otherwise you might be stuck behind a lot of people and end up seeing nothing.
Food - Have low expectations. I only tried one place at the food court because I saw kids carrying around a Puroland souvenir lunch pail! I had to buy a meal ~$15 USD to to get either a souvenir plate or lunch pail. I ended up picking the plate over the pail, but both were cute. The hamburger itself wasn't the traditional McDonald/In & out burger so I didn't care for that, but the fries were good and the rest of the meal was ok. There are other restaurants on the upper floors, so you might want to check that out before you head to the food court.
Definitely stop by the silhouette booth by the food court and have Gus cut your silhouette out of black paper! He's been working there for over 9+ years and he's probably the only one there that speaks fluent English. I still remembered him cutting my silhouette 9 years ago!
