Yelp
BAKERY:
Natale Bozzo started this family owned bakery in 1969, which is now run by his three sons, Ed, Nick and Robert. You can't miss Ed the head baker; he's a really big guy (as in workout big) with a heart of gold! In addition to their infamous donuts are cakes, breads, sandwiches, hot Italian dishes and gelato. There is a full service espresso bar, small grocery section, and the bakery was on the Food Network show "You Gotta Eat Here."
DONUTS:
Their donuts are so popular that by 9 am certain varieties are sold out. The bakery is super busy, especially on weekends. You can order donuts online the day before, but it's best to call about their cutoff times as I noticed they changed it a few times, and it wasn't reflected on their website. The donuts are sublime - soft and fluffy with generous fillings. They are a lot bigger than the franchise store variety, and definitely not as sweet. One bite and you'll be hooked!
PRICES:
Donuts - $2.15 each, 6 for $10.99 or 12 for $19.99
Mini donuts - $1.50
OUR VISIT:
We found out by chance they were open on Good Friday, so we woke up super early and arrived just after 8 am. The place was packed! Despite the staff doing their best to organize the lines, we found it quite chaotic!
We managed a quick chat with Ed since he was busy and had not slept for days! A lot of preparation went into making the specialty cakes, flans, tarts and breads to celebrate Easter.
We always buy a few slices of their pistachio ricotta cake and lemon cheesecake. Unfortunately, on this visit, they were not available ... so sad.
By the time our number was called, they were already sold out of lemon meringue donuts, and I thought I was going to have a meltdown (okay that's being dramatic), but I was told more would be coming in 10 minutes. The girl that was helping us even waited so she could add some to our box before closing it. We really appreciated her patience. Everyone was actually very helpful and doing their best to ensure the line was flowing.
PURCHASES:
Coconut filled - we received the wrong donut and only noticed when we got home, but this one (chocolate coconut) was quite good
Lemon Meringue - you must try this donut, especially if you love lemon meringue pie!
Nutella - this is a very popular one and sells out quickly. There is a generous portion of Nutella inside and on top
Boston Cream - my husband's favorite, much better than the franchise variety!
Blueberry Cream Cheese - this donut was okay, but I prefer the Key lime filled
Sfogliatella a.k.a. lobster tail - extremely crunchy, but flaky, the filling, which I think is pastry cream, was rich and creamy. $2.99 each
Strawberry Mousse - this was a miss for us. It was very tangy, so I think yogurt was a key ingredient. It was quite pricey at $4.50 for just a few bites.
Easter Egg Cheesecake - the cheesecake is a creamy version. It's very rich and can easily be shared. $4.75
Lemon Tart - tender crust with lemon filling. $3.50
Pear Ricotta Cake - the top and bottom layers were starting to get a big soggy, perhaps from the generous ricotta filling. They were out of the pistachio version, which is my favorite. $3.50
Deep Fried Cheesecakes - there were three flavours and we tried the caramel apple and dulce de leche. I liked the cheesecake filling and the dough was quite different ... definitely not pie crust or phyllo. If I had to guess, an egg roll dough or tortilla ... $3.99 each
Lemon Danish - what a ginormous dollop of lemon filling. We ate this the next day and it was a bit soggy by then, so we crisped it up in the oven. $2.50
Deluxe Custard Tart - this tasted like a Portuguese style tart filled with Nutella. $2.49
SANDWICHES:
On our way out, we stopped to pick up some sandwiches, but they were not all available yet. Did I say how sad I was? We were almost late for donuts, but too early for sandwiches.
FAVORITES:
Lemon meringue and Nutella donuts, pistachio cake, assorted cold cuts with caramelized onions on focaccia bread.
OVERALL:
I don't know how we walked out with over $45 of pastries, and it would have been more if I hadn't stopped myself! We certainly had our sugar rush during the long weekend and were literally bouncing off the walls. My husband said, "Please, no more sweets for a long time." Are you kidding me? Dessert lover here! I have a craving for a donut right now!!!
