"Located on the eastern side of the Queen's Domain, the lush landscapes of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are home to 6,500 varieties of plants, including more than 400 Tasmanian species. Wander the peaceful Japanese garden, be awed by the incredible conifer collection and then picnic on the lawns or grab a bite at the Succulent restaurant. Don’t miss the Subantarctic Plant House with its incredible array of rare flora."

Such a great place. You can really see the effort they've put into the conservation, labelling. Its a huge place, with large varieties of plants and different parts and gardens. Be sure to check out the Sub Antarctic house - super cool (And kind of cold too). Really enjoyed our time here. We parked down the road, was easy enough to get a space. Great for families

The Japanese and French Courts at the Royal Botanical Garden showed the significant effort it took to manicure the landscape. But I was particularly keen to see the Sub-Antarctic Plant House, possibly the only such display in all of Australia, if not the world. The maintained a subzero temperature. We saw mostly green, low-laying growth, at the most some short shrubs. There were not too many species of floral on display, and it was not surprising to us. We enjoyed the greenhouse very much. We then visited the conservatory with an amazing display of orchids. They were in all color spectrum and shapes. This is a must-visit site in Hobart, in my opinion

We went to the gardens for a walk, construction was going on when we visited the place. Kept in good condition and is clean. Beautiful old trees add to the vibe of the garden. Statues are present which is good to take photos. This place is also great for a family picnic. Fortunately, there was a food truck selling coffee and food. You need good 2 to 3 hours to fully explore the gardens.

The botanical garden is absolutely stunning. We spent several hours exploring and were amazed by the variety of trees and flowers, all labeled with their origins. The weather was perfect, which made the visit even more enjoyable. The highlight for us was definitely the Japanese garden – it’s truly breathtaking. The facilities are well-maintained, with clean restrooms, and there’s an information center at the entrance where you can also purchase souvenirs. The staff were very friendly, provided us with a map, and even helped us find a lovely spot to relax. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and we highly recommend visiting this garden!

Parking Tip: Three different car parks there. I recommend car park # 1/3. This is closest to the entrance. The botanical gardens were free and nice to visit. Big trees everywhere and wide paths. But not much in terms of flower gardens in summer. Best to come in Spring for that. Some shaded walking parts in the entrance part but then exposed to the sun elsewhere. The Japanese Gardens were my favourite to see. There is a building they are still renovating which will contain toilets and a cafe. The staff member at the front entrance was really kind and helpful. She explained what we can do and where to walk to maximise the little time we had to explore the best of the gardens.

A stop on the red bus tour - well worth the visit. If you have any interest in the beauty of nature, this is a must. Of personal interest were the vegetable garden and the Japanese area.

Really nice place to relax. They have plenty collection of plants. I love the subarctic plants the most, while my kids like the japanese garden. We couldn't finished all the collection in a day simply because it's so massive interesting collection they have there!

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in Hobart is a wonderful destination to explore nature and relax. Established in 1818, it is Australia's second-oldest botanical garden, offering over 200 years of history and charm. Spanning 14 hectares, the gardens boast beautifully designed landscapes, rare and exotic plants, and colorful seasonal displays. Highlights include the Japanese Garden, the Subantarctic Plant House, and the tranquil Lily Pond, providing a variety of attractions for all visitors. The gardens are ideal for a leisurely walk, a family outing, or a quiet picnic. While the main café is currently closed for renovations, visitors can bring their own food and drinks to enjoy. Don’t miss the Food Garden, which showcases an impressive variety of fruits and vegetables. For those planning events, the gardens also offer event halls, making it a perfect venue for weddings and other functions. With free entry, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is a must-visit spot in Hobart, combining natural beauty, historical significance, and a serene atmosphere.

Yelp
Just outside the CBD near the domain are the Botanical Gardens. Not as big as some other capital cities gardens, but it's in Hobart- which isn't as big as other capital cities. It's plenty big if you take your time- several "zones", including a pine forest, Japanese Gardens, Antarctic coolhouse, succulents and Fuschia house. A lot of it hilly, but there is plenty flat to explore if mobility is an issue. There's a cafe in the centre, you can grab a full meal or just grab a takeaway from the takeaway window. As a local, you almost forget it's here once you've been here a few times but considering it's free and very well maintained, there's not much negative to say about it!

Yelp
I was not thrilled with these gardens, and I'm quite familiar with botanical gardens in Australian capital cities. These were a bit far from the center of the city (and the one bus was way off schedule and a real pain to deal with). They are near the water, but there is a wall and a freeway between the gardens and the river, which is a shame. The plants and features themselves were perfectly good, but the site was underwhelming. I wouldn't categorize this as a must see, more of a quiet place to hang out.

Yelp
Small selection of wines by the glass to be shared with a cheese plate to share . No line on this glass.

Yelp
I really like Hobart's botanical gardens - even if they are a bit smaller than those you might find on the big island. A great calming oasis really close to the CBD there is actually a surprising among that goes on here - check the website regularly for the schedule and you will find events such as; Shakespeare in the Gardens, Concerts (like a day on the green), kids days (like the Teddy Bears' Picnic), special dogs days, horticulture courses, exhibitions and more! The gardens feature a reasonable restaurant with a great outlook over the gardens and is popular as a wedding venue. My picks - lounging on the grassy hills picnicking, the Japanese gardens, the conservatory and the fernery.

Yelp
These gardens are beautiful and I would be delighted to go again. I saw my first ever blossoming apple here. Has a very english feel but there are many local tasmanian botanics.

Yelp
We walked through the gardens and worked up an appetite. We also welcomed the shade. We were seated on the terrace, with a great view. Service was fine. The food was fine, albeit overpriced. We shared a crumbed trout with salad and chips. Everything was tasty, but the serving size was a bit small for the cost. Slightly pretentious, but amazing view!

Yelp
The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit if in town for a few days. Tasmania has its own climate and topography, so if you're really into gardens, it's a priority. Otherwise, some of the other Botanical Gardens in Australia and more spacious, more varied, and more memorable.

Yelp
Outstanding gardens! Formal gardens, veggies incorporated into the decorative gardens which really reflects modern gardening trends, Peter Cundell's Veggie Patch, and outstanding Japanese section, native section well labeled, lots of area for picnics, etc!
