I went here for the first time yesterday looking for several plants to add to my patio. I had a specific design in mind and was looking forward to having a healthy variety to select from. Unfortunately they were out of large rosemary and didn't carry any varieties of old garden roses...which I actually couldn't find anywhere near central LA.
As a first timer here, I was a bit confused as to how to go about selecting and purchasing. From the time I walked in and during the 20+ minutes I spent browsing the grounds I wasn't acknowledged by any staff. I saw several people who appeared to work there but they just quickly walked by me. I eventually went back up to the main level and waited in line to ask the cashier. I was told to reach out to one of the staff working the large grounds so that they could create a list for me to take to back to the cashier.
After doing that I was eventually approached by a guy in the succulent area who asked if I needed anything. He was pretty helpful and answered all my questions - seemed very knowledgeable, and helped me select some nice options.
Ultimately, I spent $200 on 5 medium sized (5 gal) plants & grasses, which I thought was a little pricey. I also wanted to grab a couple interior plants, but the prices were outrageous. Regarding pots, they were all very overpriced (large pots $300+). The other garden center I usually go to has nice, large clay & ceramic pots for $175 or less.
When I started potting the plants at home I noticed an alarming amount of ants, spiders, and other bugs. I know bugs are difficult to avoid, especially if inventory is kept outside; however, I didn't have that issue with the plants I purchased from the other garden center which has a dense selection, all kept outdoors. The critters were excessive to the point that I panicked and immediately sealed off my patio to finish potting and thoroughly clean.
I'm not sure if I'll be back, but it is a beautiful place to peruse.
