"Upscale Gifts with Island Flare The Red Door Boutique is a relatively new gift shop to Rincon. You can find all sorts of handmade crafts and upscale items for host gifts or trinkets for yourself. Nautical and island themed, this is a great place to find something out of the ordinary—not your typical souvenir. The shop stays open most days during the tourist season (Nov - Apr) and sporadically during the off-season, like many other places around town."

"Rincón Surf School, a serious educational center that opened in 1999, is staffed by coaches who offer private, group, and private group lessons, along with guided tours. They can work with every skill level, so need to worry if you've never stepped foot on a board before. Rincón is a laid-back surf town, and these lessons broaden your understanding of the city's culture. Be sure to reserve in advance." - Alicia Kennedy

This was an absolutely magical experience for our entire family, we are from the Boston area. Our two sons ages 14 and 15 took a private lesson with Jasmine at Domes Beach and it was phenomenal. Jasmine spent about thirty minutes before they entered the water discussing safety and things to prepare for. She did a very thorough job assessing their skill level and athletic ability (which is low to moderate) and I felt very confident in her ability to take them out. Jasmine stayed close to both boys the entire time, she had her eyes on them always and gave clear instructions. She helped them feel confident. My husband and I watched along from the shore with our four year old who had such a great time on playing the beach. Both boys got up a handful of times, they were pumped. They are beginners, have taken private lessons twice before and do a lot of boogie boarding in the summer but this was definitely their most successful surfing endeavor thanks to Jasmine. Jasmine was so skilled and just amazing to watch, the boys loved working with her. She was part no nonsense and part celebrating when they rode a wave, just a great combination. The owners of the school are awesome. They are very organized and helpful and respond quickly to emails. Their surf shop is fantastic; updated, clean, organized and has tons of options to purchase if needed; gear, clothing, hats, sunblock, food, toiletries etc. Their restaurant above the store is just perfect, laid back and chill, they had live music at dinner, great food and drinks and a really cute, chubby dog who hung out. Our kids loved it. Their hotel accross the street is wonderful. Rooms are clean, spacious, high ceilings, well air conditioned, decorated in a modern surf vibe. This was a total immersive surf experience, we couldn’t recomend it more. We felt very safe in Rin Con. Plenty of parking, food options, well marked roads. The beaches are just beautiful. We will definitely be back!!

Google
Rincon Surf school was fantastic!! From booking our private group online to getting us in the ocean surfing! Our instructors were professional surfers and were awesome matching the different surf skills of the group. Chacy our main instructor was amazing and by the 3rd day was part of our family. Epic surf lessons, great surf stories and Travis the owner invited us to the street party by his surf school and bar "Big Kahuna", what a blast. We miss the whole surf school gang! Memories forever!

Can’t say enough about our experience at the Rincón Surf School. All staff were wonderful and Bella was a phenomenal instructor! The kids had a blast with her, she’s truly amazing! Thank you!

Our guide was great and patient. The only issue was that is was not the best day to go and the waves were not excellent. Not the fault of the surf school. We went to Domes beach and I've heard that the weaves there are great, but on this rainy overcast day, the guide had a hard time finding great waves for us. He was very patient though! It was also a bit of a bummer as the day was so overcast (and it had been storming recently) that the water looked grey. The guide said normally you could see the bottom and the water was blue. My daughter and husband were able to catch a few and "pop up" but I only got up once and my son did not get up at all. (This was not his thing apparently!) The only suggestion I have in future would be to perhaps switch beaches if the waves were not working, but other surfers were there and doing fine, so it was likely just us.

Google
Best surfing experience of my life. Stayed with the folks at Rincón Surf School for 5 days. We had a variety of skill level surfers from beginners to intermediate surfers in our group. By the end of our stay we all upped our surf game. The surf, guides, and instructors created an experience well beyond my expectations. While out of the water the resort gave us everything we needed to rest, relax, and be ready for epic surf adventure. PR hospitality at its finest. Definitely be doing this one again, and again…

I spent 4 days with the Rincon Surf School and Casa Verde. Overall, an excellent experience- I would certainly go back and would recommend for others interested in a surf getaway. The staff are great- including Derek, Yamali, Alex and others. All very interested in making sure I had a great trip. My surf guide, Yasmine, was terrific, taught to my level, and helped find the right waves. I especially appreciate how everyone accommodated the changes in surf conditions and took things in stride. Thanks for a great trip and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Best surf trip of the decade! Being an old surfer with multiple surgeries/ailments being recuperated, I was excited to try some Mid sized surf with a local guide… Henry turned out to be the best surf guide and friend you could ask for. When a spot was too big for me to make it out, he happily relocated us to a more protected beach. He always pointed out the hazards and helped get me into position to catch good waves. I caught a few… and they were gorgeous, powerful waves with a nice open shoulder! Unfortunately I tired out after a couple hours each day but he was cheerful and understanding! Our room at Casa Verde was comfy and roomy with a nice bathroom and a big balcony with an ocean view. Across the street (and same owner) was Big Kahuna bar and restaurant with a handy little beach/surf shop below. Our gracious hosts, Travis and Asia greeted us warmly and Travis listened to my story of injury and recovery and suggested a good longboard from his quiver… he was kind and supportive and treated me like a friend. Unforgettable. Manager Alex was helpful on several occasions getting things situated for our busy days and nights and the location made our stay easy for us without a car. Jacks Shack is a 3 minute walk and has incredible breakfast burritos and fish tacos for lunch. Casa Isleña was a beautiful dinner spot with elegant staff on the beach, and their Tuna Skewers were epic. We surfed local spots like Domes, Maria’s, Dogman’s, and all were powerful waves with beautiful beaches. I’d call this an area best suited for intermediate to expert surfers. There are a few submerged hazards and you need local knowledge to be safe here. My favorite was getting burgers and drinks at Big Kahuna at night. Prices are reasonable and the food is well cooked and generous. The bartenders are friendly and pour the best drinks in town (although I was sticking to non alcoholic beverages, my partner had Sauvignon Blanc which they brought in just for her I think!) We’ll definitely be back again to visit Puerto Rico and will most likely stay with Travis and Asia at Casa Verde where all good things happen all day!

The hotel did a great job setting up the class for my wife, daughter, and myself. Our instructor was incredible and did a fabulous job teaching three people who have never surfed. At the very end of the lesson, on the way into the beach, our 12 year old daughter was hit by a breaker and knocked her off her board. She came up in front of the board and the next wave pushed it into her. She was in obvious pain. Our instructor stayed calm and did a fabulous job getting her into shore and assessing her. She required medical treatment. During the entire time and process, everyone at the hotel was amazingly helpful and genuinely concerned about her. So much so, even though we were do to leave then, we stayed and extra several days to give her time to recover. We would highly recommend taking a lesson here, whether you have ever surfed or not.

Yelp
This is a hard review. The owner, Travis, did us a favor by getting us in for a surf lesson. I've surfed before in several places. The problem we had was the surf instructor. There was a language barrier and an instruction barrier. His name is Manuel and his nickname Unca. We just didn't jive. That said, I thought two or three other instructors seemed great. We were all in the waves at the same time. I'd recommend the school but not the instructor we had.

Yelp
Made a last minute, after hours request for a next day private surf lesson for me and my two daughters. I knew it was unlikely but figured we'd go for it anyway. The next morning at 6am, I get a "Good Morning!" text from Alex at Rincon surf school letting me know they got my request and they have a coach available! She was very helpful. I needed a new cell phone charger and had to stop to get one on the way. Alex found/mapped out a Walgreens on our route! That's customer service and beyond! We hustled out the door and met Daniel Queiroz, our surf coach, at Survivor Beach ( no waves in Rincon this day). We cannot say enough good things about our experience with Daniel! He is upbeat, positive, motivating, patient and encouraging. His energy is very zen. He really works hard to make sure you have a great experience and a lot of fun. All three of us had never surfed before and we left this experience feeling like we were surfers. With Daniels great coaching and encouragement, all three of us were able to catch waves! A pretty awesome experience, all around. If you are looking for a great surf school and a great coach, these are the ones!

Yelp
So we were here for a wedding and was looking to take some surfing lessons in September and the hurricane season. My GF does basically anything on a board and wanted to try regular surfing for a change. Myself 42, 100kg and 193 cm tall never been standing on any kind of board. So this was a challenge worthy Rincon Surf School. :) We found the school online and got it recommended by Billy at Casa Verde Hotel as well. Since we were here for 10 days we wanted to talk to the people at the surf school straight away so on the second day we went passed the school and talked to Whit. Whit he's the typical surfer dude skinny, around 175-180cm maybe, long dark hair with highlights, kinda look like Ryan Gossling with long hair. Lol Anyway, when we told Ryan... Whit about our plans he started with booking us for one day and also since I didn't know the basics, he went through everything in 30 mins with us about the waves, places, safety and some rules all for free. Then on the day we met up with two teachers Mike and Johnny and some other students, they even picked us up at our hotel at 07:00. Then told us that we're heading down to Middles to surf. Mike, who's a smaller version of Whit is the nice talkative guy. He knows a lot and want to tell you everything as fast as possible leaving you with a pair of sore ears afterwards. :) Johnny, also a copy of Whit with the highlights and everything, but a bit taller was our teacher. He told me that he will get me standing in 3 lessons. And i'll tell you at Middles, that was a real challenge for this guy and my GF she was like killing everyone from the first to the last wave. First they told s a little about the beach, currents and waves. The went through the entrance and exit spots and some safety if you got tired. Johnny told us to keep a lookout for him in the water since hes got this Xray surfers eyes and spot all the waves heading our way. So I keept paddling back to him every time I feel for some feedback. He kept coaching even though I looked like a hopeless, he's humble and in some way understands what you are going through. So eventually after first day I caught 2 waves in the 2 hours we were in the water. We got a ride back to the hotel after this and Mike was telling us all about food places along the road. The second lesson was also at Middles and basically went the same, I manage to catch two waves in the 2 hours and also learnt how to place my selfband even sit on the longboard without falling over in the water. Also didn't swallow as much water as the first lesson. Last lesson with Johnny was today and we went to an awesome place called Surfers Spot, where we saw this old guy with a helmet hehe. Today there were lots of surfer in the water and we shared the waves. Today Johnny told me to try to grab the sides while trying to stand up, and to my surprice i caught all waves except two, just as Johnny had promised in the beginning. We had an amazing three lessons and would recommend this school to anyone coming to Puerto Rico for some surfing no matter what your level is. These guys are amazing and I really like Mike and Johnny so I you can choose take any of these two teachers and you will end up happy and safe. :) On our way back we got to talk to Travis, the owner of Rincon Surf School. He's really cool, a bitnolder that the others and all blond, laidback and cool. He knew everything about our 3 days and what waves we've caught. We got a really good price for our 3 lessons and apparently they can even help with cheap lodging for those who only want to surf. Grwat place and we leave happy heading back for Sweden with some new experience. Don't wait, book now!!!

Yelp
My brother in Miami decided to spend a long weekend learning to surf in Rincon, PR with Rincon Surf School. He heard of them through word-of-mouth, called me up in NY and we met in San Juan the next day. We both grew up in Miami, FL so we are used to ocean conditions (waves, currents) but we had never tried surfing, so why not? The drive to Rincon is a little less than 2 hours from SJU. It wasn't a bad ride, but I suggest you have a GPS navigator. AND, look at it while navigating, don't listen to it because you'll never understand the translation of the Spanish-named roads by the computer voice. We had a hard time and we are both fluent! Rincon Surf School provides you with GPS coordinates for exact directions to their surf house. It was very easy to get to if you are staying in Rincon. Once there, the house-converted surf school is wide open and all the instructors are extremely nice and helpful. They have you read and sign your waivers as soon as you get there. No waiting. And then you head to the backyard to learn basic terminology and techniques, get a sense of what type of beach and conditions you'll experience (rocky, sea urchins, etc), and what to expect from your instructor during the training. By the time the 15min walk-through was over, I really felt comfortable with what we were about to experience. We met Ben who would be our instructor for the next 2 days and we followed the group to the beach. About a 30min ride to a private beach just for us. No crowds. It was perfect. The beach was exactly as described. On day one we were so exhausted from paddling. Ben tugged us on several occasions to help us get to the right spot to catch the waves. By the time we got there I was thinking 2-3 hours wasn't going to be long enough, but I was so wrong. It was plenty of time for the first day. I was spent after the first hour. Recommendation #1: If you have the time, strengthen your lats and deltoids a bit before your trip. I was so tired from just the paddling alone that I could only get 2 attempts on day 1. Pre-trip me would've thought I was a quitter. Post-trip me is still completely fine with the decision. No joke that was one of the hardest upper body workouts I had ever done. Recommendation #2: My brother says to wear a light shirt to prevent chaffing of your chest while paddling. The guys at the surf school let him borrow one for day 2. I had a long sleeved dry-fit snug top on. It was perfect. Didn't get in the way. I thought I would be too sore to even attempt day 2, but surprisingly, we were energized and didn't feel too bad at all. The paddling was so much easier on day 2. We easily each caught about 6-8 waves a piece and were successfully popping up on the board and getting to our feet! What a great feeling to finally figure it out!!!! Ben was even so excited for us when we did stand up. I'm pretty sure he was also glad he didn't have to tug us as much lol. We had such a good time. We took turns going out to shore and video taping each other. Recommendation #3: Have a good camera that will zoom in real good if you want action shots from the shore. We used an iPhone 5 and i would've still liked to have gotten a bit closer. I forgot to bring the GoPro, which would've been perfect cause it's water resistant and we could've shot it from out in the water. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone. They had another family with 2 kids that were about 7-8 yo and I was surprised to see the kids standing up even on day 1! So take your kids too. They'll love it.

Yelp
RSS is 2.5 hours away from San Juan. So keep in mind you have to be there early morning to get best waves. The drive is not bad but it's worth it. Once we got to the school an small cottage on a small road we where greeted by our instructor. After consent forms he immediately started to explain basic techniques to paddle, lay on the board, and more importantly how to get up. I went with my daughters that where ready to start surfing. We drove for 30 min to the beach and got on the water. The beach was a secluded surfers only spot. My oldest daughter got up right away. My youngest took one try. The instructor was very patient with me. It took me 4 tries for me to get on my knees. Either way I loved the experience. I recommend them Highly. I want to thank my wife for the pictures and video.

Yelp
Great day riding the waves!! Ross was the best teacher. Our nephew had never surfed before and he got up the first time. They rode at least 40 waves. Ross did an amazing job at getting them in the right spot all day. They did the private lesson for 2 people. Even though the waves weren't big they had the best day and Rose so many waves. Rincon is about 2 1/2 - 3 hours from San Juan but it is well worth the drive. Go to Rincon Surf School if you want to learn to surf.

Ben P.

Yelp
I surfed with them in March, and they were absolutely fantastic! I booked at the last minute, but they were able to accommodate me, and I surfed with them for four days. The first few days were fairly flat near Rincon, and so the instructor Brian (Beemo) went out of his way to suggest that we drive to spots a bit further away which were perfect! He was a great instructor, and overall a super person to be in the water with. I've surfed a bit before, but was able to catch so many more waves, really improved my technique, and had such a better time overall, because I went with Rincon Surf School. I highly, highly recommend them.

MATTHEW P H.

Yelp
A middle aged guys' getaway brought five of us to the Rincon Surf School for two days of lessons. I never surfed before. Brian and James Morse were our instructors and they were fantastic. They were patient, encouraging, conscientious, and a lot of fun. I highly recommend. Cheers Boys!

Yelp
I arrived on Saturday morning the surf wasn't superb so the owner set me up with a hotel room On his dime just so I could fully receive the Surf experience. Travis then took me around and showed me the town and gave me his snorkel gear to spend the day in the water. I then Spent the Sunday on a one on one with Dave an instructor there, I've never surfed before but by the time I left I was riding by myself. The instruction was perfect and the experience was overall very educational. This experience was exactly what you want out of a vacation the men and women that provide surf lessons are top notch. Thank you Rincon Surf School!

Carolina C.

Yelp
I took a 3 hour group lesson. We started in a "classroom," where Whit did a great into to surfing. We practiced popping up twice. From there, it was all downhill. We spent an hour driving around to find a suitable surf spot. At that spot, our guide Billy, took off to surf. My two cohorts and I watched him surf. He wasn't interested in helping us learn, correcting our form, and helping in any way was out of the question. We realized we had to approach him to ask for help, or get his attention in any way. In 1 hour in the water, he led me through three waves (telling me when to paddle and pop up). The rest of the time, he was surfing on his own. The owner was very responsive to my complaint, and I'm grateful for that. He said that that is how group lessons go. Billy had told him we weren't interested in instruction (really? Then why did I pay $90?), which is why he wasn't helping us. I can understand being a surfer and wanting to surf. But if you're being paid to be an instructor, instructing should come before surfing.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Nine of us headed to San Juan for a bachelor party weekend, and taking a daytrip to Rincon for a surf day was an excellent choice. Dave and Ben were great instructors, who provided a quick lesson and got us out into the water quick. They were really patient, helpful, and humble in their instruction - considering only two of our crew had experience, they kept us motivated to keep trying, and most of us got up by the end of the day. We all had a great time. Thank you, again! Bonus - they also have great local recommendations - ask and they'll point you in the right direction. (Thanks for the tip about the waterfalls, Dave!)

Yelp
They were amazing! I've tried surfing once before with a friend to no avail. I wasn't sure if I would be able to stand up at all, but by the end of the morning I was riding a wave almost every time, and riding a few all the way in. Tito was our teacher and he was great! Very patient and gave excellent positive constructive criticism and made us feel very good about all our attempts. Sent us out on the best waves and was super encouraging. I would highly highly recommend them.

Yelp
My friend and I visited for a long weekend and had a blast. She'd been to Rincon the previous year - stayed and surfed with the Surf School - and raved about it. She was right on! Brian was our surf instructor, who was awesome. Very chill, friendly, and approachable, which was great for me as a beginner surfer. Everyone at the Surf School was awesome - friendly, helpful, and responsive. We also arranged massages with Scott set right by the ocean - amazing. A magical experience. Highly recommend surfing with them and staying at their property! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Nega and Julia were the absolute best ..!! My wife and I were in very small group of 4 which was perfect! We had an amazing time and learned everything we needed to get started. From when to start paddling to when to stand up on the board . Before we knew it we were both riding waves ! I recommend Rincon surf school to anyone new to surfing . Great people and and great time

Chrystarie H.

Yelp
Had an amazing time with these guys :) Ben is the best and was very nice in explaining how to catch a wave. We had a small group so we had a lot of one on one time with our instructor. I caught two really good waves. So exhilarating!! It's like your on top of the world on a board. Keep ridin' my friends

Brad N.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time this last week with these guys, and our two sons ages 25 and 17, and our daughter age 14 now consider themselves surfers. All the instructors were very patient and thorough in their training, and we felt very comfortable turning our "kids" over to them for lessons. Note that we came to Puerto Rico based on the reviews for Rincon Surf School alone; we had planned on going to Costa Rica. An excellent decision, it turned out. These are great people, who offer great training, in a gorgeous setting. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Nathan D.

Yelp
Had two great days of surfing with Oli. Usually just rent a board and hack it out, but the lessons really improved my technique, and it was great to have a friendly guide in new water. I would definitely recommend.
