"Grøften Inside Tivoli Grøften is a restaurant situated inside Tivoli Gardens and has been serving up traditional smørrebrød since 1874. A visit to Grøften is steeped in history. While the restaurant has been expanded over the years it retains much of its original look and feel. You can also trace its history through the drawings and pictures which decorate the restaurants walls. While far from the cheapest smørrebrød in town, the restaurant's location inside Tivoli offers an exciting ambiance. This location also means that the restaurant opens and closes along Tivoli's seasonal schedule. Since Tivoli closes several times a year for re-decoration, make sure to check if you'll have access to Grøften during your visit. Image Source: Krista (scaredykat on flickr)"

Booked in here for lunch on Saturday as had been recommended. Had their Theatre Platter to try a bit of everything and was not disappointed. Delicious food and friendly service. I booked into the Theatre Cafe which is a bit quieter than other areas of the restaurant. Note that you need a ticket to Tivoli Gardens as it’s inside, but the gardens are worth a walk round to work off lunch!

First Visite of Tivoli and the Restaurant which was surprisingly good for an „Amusement park“. Nevertheless, you should be Award that it is really Noise, crowded and the staff takes quite some time and is trying to do their best to deal with the huge amount of guests.

Traditional Danish cuisine, Good service, quite expensive. Personally, the crispy porc is too salty..... Good beer and the male toilet is quite unique.....

The cod was amazing! Cooked perfectly! About $150 for 2 people, cod and coffee.

We raised a concern about the vegetarian lasagna, which unfortunately tasted quite bland—almost like paper. However, the restaurant manager insisted that vegetarian food is supposed to taste somewhat artificial, which I respectfully disagree with. As someone from an Asian background, I know how flavorful and satisfying vegetarian dishes can be. It was disappointing to see the manager dismiss the feedback rather than take it as an opportunity to improve the vegetarian options.

I went here for dinner with my family to celebrate my sister’s birthday. The food is delicious and the waiters are very friendly and accommodating. The don’t have a high seat for babies but they have a baby chair that you can put on the chair. It’s very nice to sit in the outdoor area . It’s fresh and nice to see everything going around. I would definitely recommend it to anyone! We are very glad to have eaten here.

We celebrated my sister's 70th birthday here on June 7, 2025. I was the host but because live in the US, my sister conducted all of the arrangements. We had 16 guests. I ordered Det Store Frokostbord for each person. Everyone was delighted with the food which was fresh, delicious and well-presented. It was a glorious celebration. I give credit to our server, Giovanni, for facilitating and streamlining the party. He was gracious, very helpful in setting up the decorations and ensuring that all the guests received professional and charming attention. He was amazing! I am so grateful to him. I hope that the restaurant realizes what a gem they have as an employee. I place lower stars for the atmosphere simply because the venue was crowded, noisy and not as intimate as I had hoped.

Yelp
Always sublime! I come from New Jersey periodically over the years as Tivoli - I went as a child as did my mother and her mother before her It's a tradition of joy. And Grøften? A fave. Not like that charade of an eatery in Søllerod. Here real Danes with hearts and souls staff this long time beloved restaurant. Vi sies e Grøften is a phrase I recall happily from childhood right up to 2017 when I last visited in a rainy, lonely Easter's Eve and promptly shattered by left arm slipping on Strøget cobblestones. Ugh. But this night of August 29 was a cozy triumph! Smask! Unable to get a full plate of my cherished frikadeller, I was able to get a children's dish of them! Hurrah! Then beef tenderloin! My blonde waitress, every centimeter a Dane, exuded the polite affection I've been swaddled in since a boy! I Regaled her with my tale of my mother's 2nd happiest night of her life right behind us outside Tivoli in Rådhuspladsen- Town Hall Square. It was the night WWII ENDED AND DENMARK WAS FREE! My mother's friend Uffe climbed up into the Tower and got the electric working and the entire square was flooded in light, love, weeping, singing and dancing! My darling waitress reflexively swept her one hand over her other arm's forearm and beamed: "that gave me goosebumps!" I assured her it was because she was a Dane and truly understood what it was to be free! Ah the food, the Danish aura, my GRØFTEN!!

Yelp
This is a great choice for a sit down restaurant in Tivoli that is family friendly and has good food options. I had a nice salad and some fries, nothing crazy, but it tasted good and my kids were happy and treated like they were very special! My husband had some fish selections and said he enjoyed them a lot. It can feel a bit big and loud in some areas, but we were seated in a calm space in the back and it was nice. The bathrooms were clean and had changing facilities. Pros: good food choices, family/kid-friendly, very attentive, welcoming atmosphere, clean facilities Cons: some areas feel louder and busier, no outdoor service (understandable but still worth mentioning)

Yelp
I made reservations to dine at Gemyse, a vegetarian restaurant located inside Tivoli but we ended up dining here because we ran super late and arrived to the prior establishment after their kitchen closed. Still, this was a good enough of a restaurant to stumble upon because they had a vegan option for me to eat (and my non-vegan husband also enjoyed his meal and giant beer)! As for their vegan options, they only had the vegan lasagna, which I ordered. Honestly, I am not in the best place to give objective advice because I was famished and devoured everything in minutes, but in my husband's words, they were "the healthiest lasagna [he's] tasted". The salad wasn't in its freshest state with no dressing and was topped with sun dried tomatoes and olives instead, but the lasagna itself was pretty good.

Yelp
Located inside Tivoli Gardens, Grøften is a Danish restaurant with a classic, casual atmosphere. The service here was absolutely outstanding, and our friendly server Giovanni made sure we had a great time! We started with the Groftens cold-smoked salmon, and an entire fillet was brought to us, carved tableside, and plated with dill, ryebread crisps, and creamed horseradish. The slices of salmon had a deliciously oily, creamy texture, and they went nicely with the light, airy horseradish cream. Next, we got the Groftens Theater Platter, a sampler plate that came with a number of different Danish foods. There was pickled herring with capers, red onion, and dill; a fried fillet of plaice (a white fish) topped with creamy remoulade sauce; a creamy chicken salad topped with crispy bacon; a slice of Kamsteg (Danish roast pork with crispy skin) topped with red cabbage; and Frikadelle, a Danish meatball. Every item on the plate was delicious, and I made my own little open-faced sandwiches using the dense slices of Danish rye bread served with the meal. It was hard to pick a single favorite component, but I especially liked the smokiness of the salmon, the creamy chicken salad with the crispy bacon, the crispy/salty skin of the roast pork, and the flavor of the meatball. Though somewhat pricey, this was a dining experience in Tivoli Gardens that was well worth it!

Yelp
When I was a boy the ashtray on my fathers desk was from Denmark, from a place called Restaurant Grøften. When I myself got married I took my new wife on a mid December honeymoon to Paris (for the cuisine), Sweden (to visit family), and Copenhagen - so that we could go to Restaurant Grøften. Restaurant Grøften is located in the heart of a huge Gilded Age amusement park and garden, Tivoli. In fact, Tivoli Gardens was the first amusement park ever built. A young Walt Disney came here in his twenties and he was so impressed with the integration of gardens, rides, and the storytelling of it all that he began designing a park of his own for America, based on the cartoon characters that he himself created, in the same way that Tivoli Gardens was based on the characters and stories of Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. It took Walt & Mickey decades to bring the idea to life in the States, but when they finally did it in 1959 his creation became the greatest amusement park in the world: Disneyland. The truly huge element that Disneyland lacked that Tivoli Gardens actually had were really good places to eat. And the first of these to open at Tivoli was the now iconic Restaurant Grøften. Eating here is like taking a step back in history (or a mouthful back there). And because it was a favorite restaurant of my fathers long before it was one of mine, I feel that special taste of history very personally. My wife and I even took our daughter there just a couple of years after she was born. And then again, and again until I got a divorce. Thus the course of my marriage seems to be irrevocably tied to my relationship with Restaurant Grøften. And that's okay, as long as I get to eat there again. Come here for Danish food, hands down. I've posted all of the menus. And while you are at it get a bottle of Aqua Vit for the table. It's the Scandinavian version of Schnapps, only not sweet, and it is flavored with caraway. Restaurant Grøften is open all year round, but my favorite time to go to Scandinavia is just before Christmas. Although it may be cold there - it is just so beautiful.

Yelp
We spent the day inside Tivoli Gardens and saw this place and decided to eat outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful grounds. The atmosphere was amazing with great weather to match. There were 8 of us and were able to be seated without much hassle. All places were crowded and 8 were hard to seat, but they were very accommodating. We tried the Danish sampler, fish and the pasta. All were very good. Service was excellent with our waitress very good. She took time to explain all the dishes as most of the selections were new to us. I would recommend it highly.

Yelp
This was a great find in Tivoli for us. Away from the hustle and bustle of the food hall, no loud music, no celebrity chefs, just a cozy atmosphere with quality food and great service. Wife and I sat outside and enjoyed the evening, split a bottle of wine, and ate a delicious dinner. She ordered the whole plaice, which was a fish neither of us have eaten before and it was phenomenal. I ordered the steak tartar and it was amazing. Both dishes were very large portions as well. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is a tourist trap and they take full advantage of that. The Plaice fish was good but you had to bone it yourself. The server was efficient and actually helped me bone the fish. My husbands meal was pretty bad. Over cooked French fries, and a tasteless hamburger steak. The prices were about twice as high as they should have been. The ambiance was ok except there were too many tables smashed together. THIS PLACE US A RIP OFF!

Yelp
This place was a lot of fun! The vibe inside is great, very festive and decorated. I appreciated they brought a big jug of water to start. I ordered the salmon and a glass of rosé and it was amazing. Much better than expected. I also had the rice pudding as a dessert - the best part of the meal! Definitely recommend if you're visiting Tivoli

Yelp
Of course when in Tivoli Gardens any length of time, you get hungry. Being here for the first time, it was a decision where to dine. What to do? Yelp to help plus a line at the front door did it. We had charcuterie and a few beers. The food was excellent and the view was superb. The only drawback was the price was not commensurate what we ordered, a minor glitch that was finally straightened out. When in a foreign country expect the unexpected. But all in all a nice experience.

Yelp
Everything started out so well with the extremely friendly and helpful host who gave us a few recommendations and seated us with a smile. Atmosphere is cute casual in Tivoli and was pretty poppin. We wanted to try some authentic danish food so we ordered the combo 2fried fish and poached fish and the platter for one which came with things like meatball, brie cheese, fried fish, pork roast and some fish as a sauce maybe? The fish in the little dish was super salty overall the entire plate was fairly salty. The meatballs were good but my favorite was the cheese, fried fish, potatoes i think, smoked salmon and pork roast. Pork roast reminded me of the roasted pig you get chinese style with the crunchy and salty skin delicious. We did not know the fish would be the same as our entree so it sounded like the platter included some of the entree options which makes sense since its like an appetizer. Fried fish was perfectly cooked and breaded. Comes with a piece of bread underneath and tarter sauce. Also had some shrimp which tasted like the cocktail shrimps out of a freezer though or overcooked not really sure, wasn't great. Biggest issue was our waiter seemed to be in a hurry or not sure if it was a language barrier but when we asked some questions he either ignored my friend or did not understand what he was saying even though our question clearly referred to what the menu said. We also got charged for water which came in a bottle not sure how that happened. I saw others had a pitcher or water which i will assume was free/tap. We even asked for no 'gas' or carbonated as well which was kind of annoying. My friends were so annoyed with his manners that they did not bother ordering another dish since he cut them off before they finished.

Yelp
Being in Tivoli Gardens, we wanted to stick with traditional Danish food. This place was fantastic. It is part of the original Tivoli Gardens so the decor was quite funky. There is a lot of outside seating as well. One word of warning, the portions are HUGE!. We had a stew with mashed potatoes so they served it family style. It was for two of us and it could have easily served 4-5 people. A lot of waste. It was so tasty though. The other in our party had the fish which was also outstanding and also huge - it came with boiled potatoes and again, there was probably enough for a family of four rather than one person. Our server was definitely not friendly but was not rude. Just sort of indifferent. The prices were certainly reasonable - think it is one of the cheaper ones in the garden. We would highly recommend.

Yelp
We did NOT expect much from this restaurant, nestled squarely in the touristy Tivoli Gardens. It kind of felt at first like we were sitting down in the Norway exhibition at EPCOT... but it was cold; we were hungry... and lo! --it was GOOD. The service (as in most places in Denmark) was a tad reserved, but the food was superb! It wasn't a cheap meal (none were!), but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Reservations advised but we had no problems getting seated.
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
Fun and delicious, with excellent service. The food portions are HUGE! We ordered way too much. We ordered an olive / cheese platter which was enjoyable, the bread (which had enough bread for 20 people), salad, and main courses. The setting is within the amusement park. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather.

Yelp
Well, what can you say? It's a classic Danish restaurant that serves Danish fare, such as smørrebrød (for lunch) and some classic dishes like Stjerneskud (shooting stars), flæskesteg and the likes. I guess this place most attract tourists as the locals would prefer somewhere else outside the amusement park. Pricewise, it's obviously more expensive than restaurants outside, although God knows why it's like that considering we've paid entrance ticket to Tivoli already, but service is good, they're bunch of old men who'd make you feel that you're in a real "kro" (literally translated as inn, but more like pubs in English). If you happen in Tivoli for a visit and want to try Danish fare, I guess this place is alright to begin with. Do have your smørrebrød with snaps, that's how the locals do it.
google avatar

Jimmy H.

Yelp
We went here for lunch on a high recommendation. One of the Danish traditions is to enjoy herring and schnapps, which we tried here along with other open faced sandwich staples. For those not in "the know" you first start with the herring and schnapps. Once you've had that you then move on to the fried fish (more herring?). After that it's free game. Eat what you'd like. I never felt like more of an American after I filled my plate with everything (and I mean everything) before being told the "order of operation". It's a neat tradition that everyone should try and enjoy. What are you waiting for? Hopefully this review will save you the embarrassment I had!

Yelp
Came upon this place while wandering Tivoli. I am vegan so the Vegetarian menu is what caught my eye, and got me to go in to this restaurant. The menu says to ask for their vegan options...which makes it sound like there is more than one option. The waiter had to double check with the kitchen, but he made it clear that there was only one vegan option, the Baked Portobello Mushroom without cheese. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very cute, so I just went with it and ordered the only vegan dish available. I was expecting a large stuffed Portabello mushroom with a possible side salad, but what came out was a salad with 3 small mushrooms on top stuffed with quinoa. It was good, not amazing, but good. What was even more of a shocker was the price... 245kr which is $36 usd for a salad!! I just ate at a Michelin star restaurant the night before, and my dish wasn't even that ridiculously overpriced!

Yelp
We had a party of 9 show up and they could accommodate us immediately, which is a +1 star just to start. The inside is casual and friendly. The waitstaff is totally professional; this place is a turn & burn and the servers know their stuff and get the orders right, even on a huge party of people speaking different languages. The food is good. Not earth-shattering, but solid stuff. Great atmosphere, good food, super service. Can't go wrong.

Yelp
Everyone pays to eat here as you have to get i to Tivoli first. ,amy older generations will gladly do that whether by season pass or normal admission as they can get the food of their youth. Grøften serves the food of tradition. Our server. Martin was awesome in that he helped us pick some dishes and also explained the traditions behind them. Roast beef smørrebrød, mashed potatp/bacon/chive/beetrot, and an aquavit for safe measure. Ecerything was delicious. This was knowing i had dinner resys coming up. Maybe one of the few places in town that you can get solid examples of traditional Danish lunch and dinner. 4.3 stars

Yelp
My husband and I ate dinner here while visiting Tivoli Gardens. We LOVED the pickled salmon appetizer with Rye bread and spicy mustard sauce. It was so yummy that we ordered 2! We also had the cheese plate which was great. I ordered the tomato soup which was tasty, and my husband had the fish of the day which was some kind of Bass, and he enjoyed it. We also had a bottle of white wine. Everything was delicious. Our waiter, Martin, was amazing. Incredibly personable, friendly, and happy to recommend items to us. Definitely ask for Martin. Next time we return to Copenhagen, we will be sure to go back to Groften for the open face sandwiches! I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Was here for julefrokst with some colleges just before Christmas. This was my first visit to Gröften and also my very first julefrokost :-) The place was packed to the very limit. Me and another college arrived a bit after than the rest (12 people in all) and we couldn't almost reach our seats and whenever somebody at the table behind moved slightly you got an arm or an elbow in you. The julefrokost was nice, assortments of danish delishious smörrebröd and different toppings. I like the way that they served the julefrokost, on trays of different levels. The risalamand (spelling is prob wrong) was absolutely fantastic, was the highight of the evening. The place was decorated in a fantasiic way, not sure if the entire decoration was just for Christmas or if it was regular..
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
Good danish meal. We ordered the Christmas set which is as Danish as it gets and it was very good for lunch. Quality Christmas beers as well. The service is impeccable, the waiters really lifted the place up. Overall and excellent place to grab lunch!

Yelp
Lovely restaurant in the middle of tivoli gardens. Potato soup was delicious and my friend and I both really enjoyed our open faced sandwiches. I had the Danish meatballs & he had the roast beef with fried egg. I wish American amusement parks had the same quality of dining!
google avatar

Jerry L.

Yelp
Way overhyped... The servers were rude and the recommended food was simply disgusting. He could not explain what the fish of the day was and made no effort to try and find out what the dish was. I was recommended to eat some sort of fried fish (some popular item he said that many others enjoyed). The dish was disgusting, bland and not worth it. My friend's dishes (Lobscous and lamb shank) were also not up to par with the price and service. Please go somewhere else to eat.

Louise L.

Yelp
Amazing danish traditional food, great service with a smile and a relaxed cosy and funny place. Food was great and huge portions. Love it.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, bustling and colorful with local people and cuisine. We loved the attention to detail that Morten M provided. The food we ordered was colorful and tasty. Your couldn't leave hungry. This restaurant is for the traditional and the creative eater. Thanks for the adventure!

Yelp
This is a very nice restaurant in the Tivoli. Very comfortable athmosphere inside. Heating-lamps make it warm when the weather outside is wet and cool. The variegated menu let's everybody keep smile. The meals are very delicious and the service is well. You can spend here a nice time with friends, family or colleagues.

Thomas G.

Yelp
I have been to Grøften 3 times now. Of those 3 times I have sent my food back to the kitchen 2 times. Once a steak way over cooked. Second time a really bad wienerschnitzel. The food also comes after very few minutes which is not okay for the price you pay. If it was not situated in tivoli this restaurant would not exist. Go and enjoy tivoli, the beautiful garden and all the rides, and then go have dinner somewhere else.

Yelp
Flad mad oplevelse, langsom upersonlig service og i forhold til hvad man får et alt for opskruet prisniveau.

Nat A.

Yelp
I realize this may be a local favorite and that this can sometimes run counter to foreigners with different palates But I'm going to suggest foreigners proceed with caution here First, there is a huge smoking/dining area. They tried to seat us here without even mentioning it. The service was friendly and helpful, till it wasn't. The potato soup was delicious, but I wish we had stopped there The two main courses were inedible. And for 200+ dkk each I would have expected better. The waiter described the vegetarian as saffron rice with asparagus which seemed pretty basic for 235dkk. I'm not a fan of cod so when I ordered the plaice fish. it is huge but is basically a full bone fish deep fried. The inside was slimy and the outside semi crisp. The potatoes were good, I wish there were more so I could have made a meal of it. The Danish hash my companion ordered was more like a stew and he said you couldn't really tell between the meat and potatoes All in all I wish we had gone someplace else. Having said all this the locals who were eating here seemed to be quite enjoying themselves.
