"The PIC: De-Bunking Myths about Amsterdam's Sex Industry Ever wondered how it feels to sit behind one of those curtained windows in Amsterdam 's Red Light District (RLD)? Find out from women who've been there at the Prostitute Information Center (PIC), near the statue of Belle on Oudekerksplein engraved with the words, "Respect sex workers all over the world." Founded in 1994 by former prostitute Mariska Majoor, the PIC offers a glimpse into Amsterdam's infamous sex trade while working to reduce prejudice and misunderstanding about window prostitution. In its furnished mock-brothel room, soak in the vibe of a place dedicated to satisfying prurient needs for a price. Learn about Amsterdam's intriguing sex industry in the mini-museum and check out Jaap Majoor's paintings of prostitutes and his haunting mural depicting the RLD. While Mariska's father abhorred the idea of his teenage daughter working as a prostitute, painting enabled him to portray some of the beauty of sex-for-hire and to work out his feelings about Mariska's chosen profession. The PIC offers walking tours of the RLD, as well as presentations about prostitution aimed at providing an accurate view of the world's oldest profession―a practice that's been legal throughout the Netherlands since 2000. Pick up a book about Amsterdam's sex industry, a painting or other souvenir of your visit to the PIC in the Wallenwinkel, adjacent to the center. Purchases help the PIC survive, as it receives no governmental support."

"Walking tours of Amsterdam’s Red Light District aren’t hard to find, but no other operator tells the story of the notorious neighborhood from the perspective of sex workers. Run by invaluable non-profit the Prostitution Information Center (PIC), walks aim to encourage an open debate about the misunderstood industry and increase respect for sex workers (the term preferred by prostitutes). Turn up to PIC’s community center, café, and exhibition space a few minutes before the tour—or come earlier to consult the sex library over coffee and cake. Guides are either ex-sex workers, ready to open up about their own stories, or researchers on the industry who are able to answer literally any query from how much money you can make in a shift to the ancient origins of the trade. Given PIC’s mission to change hearts and minds, there’s absolutely nothing rote about the delivery here—this is a real passion project for guides, and you might find yourself shedding a tear." - Clodagh Kinsella

I was only in Amsterdam for a day, and wanted some insight into the red light district and prostitution (in the Netherlands). There is a lot of good information here, it is a wonderful space, and Bear has been one of the most gracious individuals I have met on my travels (with a plethora of knowledge both about sex work and good general tourist recommendations). I'm glad I managed to swing by for the 30 minutes I did (and I love the mini comic and postcards). Thank you 🙏

This was by far one of the best parts of my trip! Our guide was so inormative and provided such a progressive and thorough explanation for everything. It was worth every cent. Skip all the other red light district tours! This is THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT tour to do.

I joined a super interesting “walk and talk” lecture led by a sex worker who works at this non profit center. It was super interesting and included historical information, discussion of regulations, ethics, and more! Plus there was a little scavenger hunt around the red light district. A highly recommended experience as an addition to simply walking around on your own to learn something new. You can buy a ticket online.

I was taking a tour with them and it was very interesting, informative and respectful. We learned a lot about the history and current situation of the people working in this business. It was a great tour, thank you very much for that!

Two friends and I did the Walk and Talk with Nat and loved it! She was so open and informative. I learned so much about the history of sex work in Amsterdam and Nat answered all of our questions. She sent us on a short walk around the red light district with a list of things to pay attention to. It was very personalized and she spoke in detail about what we wanted to know more about. Highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants to learn more about sex work or the red light district.

Nat was amazing! Super interesting information and personal stories about the history and realities of sex work. Highly recommend.

We went to the prostitution information center today with a university class. The talk was informative, yet it was very biased and some facts were untrue or just anecdotal knowledge. Her statements lacked foundation claiming that sex workers have a lower probability of passing on an STD than a random person you meet in a club, sex workers always use a condom, violence is not a problem and etc. I think if you want to really INFORM then this is important. I would have wish for a critical conversation about the work.

This was my first time in Amsterdam and I wanted to gain some more insight on the Red Light District, so I came here which was a fantastic choice. I loved that it's a nonprofit that's run by some of the sex workers and they help other women connect with each other and they also participate in advocacy causes. The tour is set up as a "walk and talk", where you can talk about and discuss some of the history of the region as well as what the current regulations are, before they send you out to walk around the Red Light District on your own and you can come back and discuss what you've seen. My guide was Phoebe and I was the only person in my scheduled time slot, which I thought would be awkward at first but she was so straightforward and open that it made it easy to talk to her and ask about anything that I was curious about, and it definitely gave me a different perspective on the Red Light District!
