Prospect of Whitby

Meg and her staff were so lovely. They are obviously understaffed but did everything they could to make our reservation nice - thank you Meg! The food on the other hand was genuinely laughable it looked like a school dinner. Not the staffs fault they’re just making what’s prescribed but DO NOT come here for a nice roast. The burger looked okay but genuinely 2/10 for food.

Lovely huge old pub, plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs and you can sit outside near the river when it's warmer. The food looked lovely but we had already eaten elsewhere. The pub has a lot of history which you can see inside, there's lots of photos and information. I'd definitely recommend a visit, it's lovely

Really nice traditional pub. Haven't been here in years, but shouldn't leave it so long next time. Wonderful Historic atmosphere, well kept ale and always nice to have a glass with a handle. Decent food at not over the top prices. Starters were excellent; vegetarian burger was very pleasant. Crab burger looked fantastic if perhaps not as flavoursome as I was anticipating, but nice.

Beautiful old pub steeped in history, sailors and pirates 🏴‍☠️ stories. It has been serving patrons for over four centuries. Wood panelling and doors from the 18th & 19th centuries. The character has been maintained into the present day. Didn’t eat on this visit but the food did look 👀 inviting. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and fantastic views of the working Thames. Worth a visit

if these walls could talk.... ....they would say this is a great place. obviously there's a lot of history because this has been around for over 500 years, however, the inside has been updated and looks modern. The restaurant has two floors as well as outdoor seating. The ambiance is nice with just the right amount of noise to add to the atmosphere. Tables are a good distance apart and comfortable. The food is exceptional and the serving sizes are more than generous. everything is well cooked, seasoned, and the sauces were plentiful. ait's not a large menu, which is good, generally it means the food is freshly prepared. there are fish, chicken, beef, and some veggie options as well. The service was helpful, patient, and attentive. it is a unique place and definitely worth trying.

I love coming here. On my last visit, I brought relatives from overseas who enjoyed all the history. We had an early dinner, and actually I think they could have given us a table upstairs when I called up, because when we went up, it was pretty empty, booked for people coming later. Instead, we managed to come early enough for a table downstairs. I definitely prefer upstairs, but don't mind being downstairs too. It does feel like pubs are getting busier. They are a cheaper option for going out and I do think they are an important part of our community, so like to support them. If it's your first time, check out the signs on the staircase and upstairs. Also, it's lovely to go to the outdoor area both upstairs and downstairs. The history and views are wonderful.

A very interesting place to visit, as it is so old ! A nice selection of beers and great view on the Thames river. The beers are totally fine. We did not eat because we came here in the middle of the afternoon so I can't comment on the food.

I only went there for 1 drink. Such an amazing place. When I asked what time the kitchen closed, it was already too late. The young man behind the bar immediately recommended the italian restaurant nearby. Great service. Great history

London's oldest - and quite chill - riverside pub It dates back to 1520 , and you can tell - from the funky windows, to the restrooms, to the undulating floors, to the. Pepys Room, to, we'll, everything. But..., the view is good (seriously good. Especially at high tide), so's the beer, the food ain't bad, and, well, it checks all the "local pub" boxes. All in all, worth it...

Oldest pub in London. Amazing place for lunch, so glad we took the chance to come. We had perfect fish and chips with a side salad. Everything was super fresh, the French fries crisp, lightly salted and wide plank style, the fish was light flaky cod and crunchy, the salad came with a lovely little vinaigrette. They even garnished with a grilled lemon. Portions were generous. The view of the old pub was so classic from the inside with the wood beams but the view of the Thames from our window was the best. The door to the balcony was open and we could hear the tide creaking below us. Justin and Liberty were both very attentive and checked on us several times. Also for anyone with mobility challenges we had no problem navigating the ground floor where we were.

Very old traditional pub along the river. Managed to get a seat by the window though you have to go to the bar to get your drinks and order your food. Unfortunately the Sunday Roast had run out. Food was decent and reasonably priced.

Craig Hockenberry Cincinnati The pub had amazing food, views, beers, and people. It was several hundreds years old and and located in a very cool place in London. The staff was great. This was my local pub that I've been going to on a bi-weekly basis since moving to the areas two years ago. We made the mistake of going here time and time again, bringing friends and family because of the beauty of the building and nice view from the 1st floor balcony, rather than the quality of the service. Before I get into my long winded anecdote, I have to say there are 2 or 3 staff members that work here that do a fantastic job. Unfortunately, multiple other staff members have been rude on occasion, or we've witnessed poor form. From witnessing staff picking their nose while on their shift serving food, or staff giving us terrible attitude when they overcharged us for something that was their fault. On that note, a few of the staff have a pretty general negative attitude/vibe, making interactions awkward and unwelcoming. Unsurprisingly, after our most recent and last interaction there, this may be down to the awful management, which is the most important issue facing this pub. We went with our friends who were moving away so we thought the local pub might be the nicest place to have a British goodbye. After eating a meal (*which are generally fine/acceptable and nothing more (would chose to eat at other local places anyway)), we had a round of drinks. One of our party ordered a cocktail that two people were sharing, so we poured it across two glasses. Both agreed they didn't like the taste after sipping it a couple of times. We then all tried it to give our opinions and none of us liked it (0/6). So one of our party took the glass it was originally poured into down to ask them to remake it or get us something different. One of the staff tried it and didn't react like it tasted good/like it was supposed to but the manager said that because we had apparently drank most of it, they refused to get us something different. Outright refused to remake a drink. She had no apology for us not liking it, no other reasoning, just said ''next'' as she then proceeded to ignore my friend. I've worked in the food and beverage industry for years previous and even if someone drank half a drink and asked for a different one, of course I oblige in making them a new/different , or otherwise you'd be inferring your customer that has spent multiple thousands of pounds over the last years is trying to swindle their way to a free drink. It's bemusing that the MANAGER of all people was the person who was acting this way. When I went down and asked to speak to the manager she also acting all high and mighty as she said ''Yeah sure'' and stood there proudly. There is a reason this pub, despite it's beauty is seemingly on the decline, Green King/ the management of Green King pubs in London really needs to consider getting shot of this manager so they can have a better trained, professional staff that treat their customers at least decently. If you're in the area AVOID. You'd be much better suited to walk 5-10 mins down the road to Town of Ramsgate for much better food, river views and fantastic staff that are positive, energetic and will look after you and make you want to go back there time and time again. Just go read reviews on that place and compare. For beer drinkers the newly opened Wapping Tavern has the best selection of local and international beers on tap (though it's a bar), and for those wanting a good british beer, take your money to The Captain Kidd, where you can also have river views and have a much better time.

I live in the US, and when researching my trip to Europe a customer at the bar where I was working told me about the Prospect. I wrote it down and I'm so glad I remembered it when we were in London! I said in a previous review that we just don't have anywhere near the amount of cozy pubs so this could be my charmed self talking, but I enjoyed everything about the Prospect! Great beers and so many things to choose from on the menu. I wish we had this kind of meat and potato comfort food cuisine in the States, but you can't find it as good as this! The atmosphere is incredible and I love that even though we were in a room full of people it still felt like it was private! When I come back this side of the Atlantic (hopefully sooner rather than later), this will be one of my first stops!

As far at atmosphere, Pub decor and vibe.... this is a 5 star Pub. Off the beaten path as you round the cobble streets in the historic interesting Wapping area, just follow the side streets near the Thames River. You can feel the history here in Jack the Ripper stopping grounds, eek! Once inside the Prospect however, it was very Cozy, busy in just the right way and great ambiance with a lil fire stove in the front bar along with great hand pulled cask beers, towards the rear there are nice wooden round group tables in the restaurant area. This place was what I dreamed a London pub would be! What is great is that although it would seem Touristy due to it is the Oldest Bar and has all this historic"Hanging Judge" old photos and Memorabilia.. it did not feel touristy just rather like a regular cozy fun vibe pub. While the Pub is five stars I'd say the restaurant food was just A-OK, the fish and chips was tasty and rather authentic but the Shepard's meat pie seemed like it was possibly older and reheated? It was tasty but just ok. You should make a point to visit the Prospect of Whitby if you are in the Wapping or White Chaple area while visiting London, worth a stop for a Proper Pint!

I love this cute little pub. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, the Prospect of Whitby is in a residential part of Wapping, right along the river. Its fairly quiet, but cosy, and I liked the fact that there was very low level lighting as it adds to the ambience of the pub. We decided to eat here, however we only ended up having starters of a baked camembert and cod goujons. The baked camembert came with a red onion chutney, crispy toasted bread and some cucumber and carrot sticks. It was utterly delicious and definitely a great winter warmer! The cod goujons were piping hot and really tasty as well, served some tartare sauce. If you're looking for a cosy pub which is slightly off of the beaten track but still pretty central, then definitely check the Prospect out!

An absolute amazing British pub right on the water. The place is bursting with history and the staff are eager to share this, the whole feel and look of the place is old and rustic but looks amazing. The food is very British and looks and tastes fantastic, literally the best pub I've ever been to.

I'm a big foodie. I wasn't impressed with the food. Went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too packed. Ordered the classic fish and chips. My mushy peas had been sitting out for awhile and the fish was very oily. I just ate the fish inside and that was cooked great. Great atmosphere. Great selection of drinks. Lots of beers on tap. Great view.

A very nice old pub the peaceful yet atmospheric revamped Docklands area. It's a large pub with plenty of nooks and crannies - my friend had his birthday party in a room upstairs. A buffet was provided which looked fairly generous, although the remnants were far from delicious (nachos made with small heavily seasoned packet tortilla chips normally don't work well). I second another review (from 18 months ago) about the poor state of the ladies loos, which had a very wet floor on this occasion. They serve Big Tom which is always a way to my heart and I probably should have paid more attention to what else was available but according to the website it involves cask ales (also the website says it has been visited by Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys, Whistler and Turner...and PIRATES!). I wouldn't necessarily travel here again but it's a great local asset.

I'm officially old. I'm writing about the floor I've just seen. Yes, the floor in this pub is impressive. It's flag stone and pretty damn old, dating back to the 1500s. What use to be a drinking hole for pirates and smugglers is now a generic boozer with standards drinks, poor quality mircowaved pub grub and a potentially chavy clientèle. Don't let that put you off though, they have a few lovely outside areas looking over the Thames and a hangman's noose dangling in the wind. I like this pub, it's in a funny area that is partly locals and some purposeful tourists wanting to explore London's history. Is it work the trip? Maybe...

My family and I went here while on vacation in the UK, and it was awesome. Not only was the food great, but it just had so much history to it. I forget the schpeel the guide gave us, but it's been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. There's even a noose still hanging out on a pole on the wharf where they used to hang people back in the day. The food was delicious and they have an excellent beer selection. A little on the pricey side, but it's totally worth it. Plus you get a nice view of Canary Wharf across the water.

Its a really old pub, apparently the oldest in London ( i'm sure there are lots that say the same ). It has history around smuggling which is quite fun to read about. There is a great outside area ( which is a bit small ) but it has wonderful views of the Thames! Also outside is a hangman's noose. Morbid but pretty fun! Didn't have any food, but it looked and smelled nice enough. All in all a great pub out of the way in London. The walk along the Thames is amazing as well!

For some reason, I can't seem to upload my photo. We had the fish and chips, a fritter of chopped fish and chips, and the baked Brie. Also a few drinks. This place was really hopping, very busy but we enjoyed it and I would recommend this place.

Loved everything about this pub. Out of the way on a cobblestone road, overhanging the river, with a boisterous but cozy atmosphere inside. This is the quintessential English pub and it definitely warrants stop for a pint. We went with a couple pub classics while we were there - fish and chips and Sheppard's pie. Both were great; we especially loved the pie, but we later found out that this is the *exact* menu served at multiple pubs throughout the city. And I don't mean "URYBODY serves fish and chips and pie," I mean everyone was serving this exact fish and pie. I guess it's a sort of chain owned by Greene King. So that's a bit disappointing. But that said, the pub was fucking fabulous and I still recommend it as one of the top historical pubs in the city.

This is a great little pub right on the Thames in Wapping that goes w a a a y back. Back before its most notorious customer, Judge George Jeffreys, England's "Hanging Judge" and James II's Lord Chancellor, was found hiding here after the Glorious Revolution in 1688.* A wall of the pub is devoted to memorabilia of Lord George, rest his tyrannical little soul. But this pub is a pleasure in its own right. Its waterfront location provides excellent views of the Thames and its South Bank, and there are spacious decks on two levels, as well as dining rooms nicely partitioned to provide a sense of intimacy. The bar area is cozy and screams Old England, but the noise levels, like the clientele, are moderate and well-behaved. The food is a bit standardized, as befits a corporate-owned place like this one, but it's substantial and good. The beer selection is wide and prices are very reasonable. Transit: London Overground to Wapping Station, then either a short walk of less than 10 minutes or an even faster bus ride on the 100 or D3 line. _____ *Some claim that Jeffreys was apprehended in the nearby Town of Ramsgate (TOR) pub, equidistant from Wapping Overground station in the direction opposite from The Prospect, but since that structure was not built until the 1750s, that seems impossible. To resolve the controversy, hoist at least one pint in each pub and then decide! And, after doing so, I can state - however shakily - that while the TOR is a nice pub in its own right, The Prospect has the better patio, deck and view. If Jeffreys wanted to lay low, though, maybe he did resort to the TOR after all. Drink more, and then decide!

This is one of my favourite pubs. In Wapping by Wapping Stairs/Execution Dock where pirates were tied up to let the river wash over and drown them. A favourite place of Judge Jeffries the Hanging Judge. A snuggles den and from around 1600's Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens are said to have drunk here. Ok so it can be touristy but not always. I love the terrace in summer and watching the river traffic. It has a pewter bar which is pretty unique. Recently I dicovered stairs and a metal ladder at the side and went down onto the beach the tide was out. The boathouse is still there underneath. Once, in winter, it was very quiet and I went to the bar to get drinks. Started chatting to the landlord and he said if I could tell him what the name meant my drinks were free. Told him and that I had a photo of the reason on my wall at home. Free drinks :0)))

We visited this restaurant on the last night of our holiday in the UK. We had reserved in advance online not being sure how busy the restaurant scene was going to be. We particularly wanted to go here because of the history and the location (literally hanging over the Thames). The service was really amazing. All the staff were friendly, attentive and service was fast. They came to check on us regularly, and made sure we had all we needed. They even chatted us up about where we were from, and what we had done during our travels. The food was delicious, the location really lovely. They have a terrace to sit outside and enjoy drink/food by the water (too cold for us in October). Highly recommend this location, the food, and the people. Thanks for making our last night memorable and delicious!

The fish and chips here is amazing! Love the garden out back. I love this entire section of London since it's not touristy. This pub is wonderful and charming with its old floor, historical notes throughout.

We visited the pub on a very frosty December Saturday evening. It was quite mobbed and literally not a seat to be had. I suppose to be expected with what looked to be several formal holiday parties and a few informal ones in progress. We arrived from an excellent Wapping walk, down the High st from St Katherine's and then up around the Shadwell basin with great Canary Wharf views. Coming around the corner and seeing the Prospect of Whitby literally glowing in the distance was a fun experience. I had noticed along the way that the Town of Ramsgate, another interesting, very historic riverside pub was relatively empty and so was a bit surprised that PoW was so jammed but I guess it is much more on the tourist/local/London map as a destination. The Prospect is of course a fascinating historical site besides being a contemporary working pub. We were in our cold weather gear from the walk and so decided to sit outside in the small but delightful garden area under an expansive old willow tree. My one negative comment is that the main bar really seemed to be greatly understaffed for a busy Saturday evening. There were just a couple of bartenders and a transient person for what is a pretty substantial length of (original pewter) bar. That seems questionable management particularly when you know there will be thirsty holiday parties going on. We waited patiently in quite a disorganized scrum and eventually got drinks, wine for my wife and a very tasty vanilla/chocolate stout for me. By this time the garden was actually getting a bit crowded - even in the frigid temps with no heaters, etc - but we found a decent spot and it made for a memorable drink. The pub interior is very interesting and there is pretty extensive signage noting particular historical aspects which is nice. I'd highly recommend putting the Prospect of Whitby on your historical pub tour even on a cold winter night. It must be very nice - and also perhaps equally crowded - on nice spring/summer days when the several balconies overlooking the river would be prime drinking real estate. Cheers!

Friends literally live on this street where this pub sits. There's something about the flag stone flooring dating back to make this the oldest pub in London or along the Thames or something along those lines. It's ok, it's got that "charm" that tourists love. The service in here is pretty dire so when it's busy be prepared for a long wait. Food is ok but nothing exceptional. There are 3 outside spaces which is nice in the summer. The small balcony is quite an amusing spot where you can watch people walk down to the tiny beach below and see them slip where it says beware slippery steps, I know it's not funny but it is a little!

This pub could be the best pub in London. Only it's really not. The building is gorgeous, lots of old rabbit warren rooms all over the place and no less than three outside spaces. Almost everywhere in the pub looks out onto the river, and even Princess Margaret used to like coming here. The first fuschia brought to England was traded here So what's wrong with it? 1. The food. It's very expensive and really sub-par. the snacks are all £10 each and are tiny. The main meals are just not very high quality and the only thing worth having are the chips, which are also very expensive for the tiny bowl you get. They are tied to a brewery, which means that they serve Pepsi instead of Coke. (Pepsi is waaaay too sweet for me). 2. The service. They didn't have enough people on, and there was only one really nice person behind the bar. everyone else was a little officious and a bit curt. Perhaps they were overworked. 3. The cleanliness. The ladies loo downstairs was a fright. There was loo roll everywhere, the floor didn't look clean and the hand dryer was not working. I told a chap behind the bar, who just looked at me blankly, didn't say a word and went to walk away. I had to check that he had understood me! Oh, and I had to come up with the plan to put napkins in the loo as a temporary fix for the broken hand dryer! 4. The smoking policy. Fewer and fewer people are smoking, but lots of people would like to eat their meal outside. With three outdoor spaces (one a kind of rail that you lean on) it would be easy to designate just one as a no-smoking space. I suggested it to the day-manager who told me that it was illegal to do that. I think she needs to check her grasp of the law! So, it has HUGE potential, but right now, I really wouldn't bother.

Enjoyed my visit for the history, location, atmosphere and buzz of the place. My friend, Charles Dickens,knew it well because he lived up the road at the Grapes while writing 'Our Mutual Friend'. Sitting on the Thameside terrace, the setting was picturesque, with a weeping willow tree for shade, and looking past the big lamps (could they once have been gas?) at the wide sweep of the Thames across to Canary Wharf. Service was swift and friendly- an excellent chicken and chorizzo pie with good veg and a small jug of gravy sauce (which I found fascinating to dunk everything in, while it remained hot),With a pint of good lager to swill it all down, the bill was surprisingly inexpensive. I look forward to my next visit.

Every summer some friends and I walk from Greenwich to London, following the Thames path. The Prospect of Whitby has now become an essential part of our journey. It is a small pub on the path which offers spectacular riverside drinking. The pub is rich in history and character, summed up best by the stone floor which is one of the first things you notice when you enter. Outside in the beer garden you can see a noose and gallows which represents the pub's association with executions in the past. We normally stumble across the venue in the afternoon and we enjoy a really chilled out drink. The bar staff have always been friendly and courteous and we really look forward to our next visit. This is a must visit during summer months.

The Prospect of Whitby purports to be London's longest established riverside tavern. This claim is debated, but one can hardly deny its pedigree. Tucked in beside an historic set of stairs leading down to the bank (stairs which are, in charming London fashion, half submerged at high tide) has at the very least been around for quite a while. Courtesy of a new interior design on the main level, The Prospect of Whitby is no longer quite as 'rustic' feeling as it once was. Never by any means ramshackle, this new, perhaps Christmas inspired, shift into the swank has me a little bit disturbed: surely I can still pretend I am living way back then in some remote corner. Alas. Where once high stools stood at high tables, affording views over the Thames below are now arm chairs and love seats, candlelit and cozy. Yes, this is likely a better fit for the Wapping locals and the Limehouse/Canary Wharf trickledown, but from my humble perspective it's ultimately boring. It is, most certainly, a lovely living-room-like environment for quiet afternoon and evening chats, and perhaps this is what I am ignoring. I shall edit my review accordingly if I eventually find it to be so. In the mean time I will sulk foppishly in favour of the lickspittle atmosphere of yore.

Prospect is my local pub, I love it and all it's English pub charm. Wapping is a great area and this pub adds to its appeal. They have a wide selection of cider and beers on tap. Menu has a lot of variety if you're after a burger or a baked Camembert evening or nachos to watch the football in their TV.

This pub is reputed to be one of the oldest in London. It is an excellent place on a warm day as it has two decks for plenty of outdoor seating. The upper floor provides plenty of seating both inside and out and we've never had an issue finding a table for our group. The bar is well stocked with both liquor and a variety of beers and ciders including Crabbies! Food-wise, the Prospect holds it own with 4 specials (pie, sausages, roast, and veggie option) changing every day although I think this repeats somewhat on a weekly basis. The regular menu goes beyond the usual pub grub with excellent seafood options and a variety of sharing platters. Every Wednesday around 8.30pm, the Prospect hosts a pub quiz for 1 squid a person. There are 6 rounds which take the quiz through to 10.30ish by the time all things are said and done. 1st prize is 25 quid, second is a bottle of wine, and 3rd is usually some sort of snack. The questions range in categories but are challenging making it overall a fun time.

Pubs in this part of London sure have a lot of history. This one dates from 1543 and lists outside and inside all the Monarchs under which it has served up alcoholic beverages. It is one of two pubs on the street to claim to be where the notorious hanging judge Judge Jeffries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Jeffreys,_1st_Baron_Jeffreys) was caught. The pub is lovely, with a number of different sections inside and out. It is however well known so you might struggle to get a place outside on a nice day, if you arrive at the wrong time. You might even struggle to get a drink full-stop if you are unfortunate enough to arrive just after a bus full of tourists (either that or a load of random French people happened to be there at the same time!). The interior looks pretty nice and olde, at least to my uneducated eyes They serve a decent pint of ale. I had something called Titanic. Their chips are quite nice too. Haven't tried the rest of the food. Like another lovely pub nearby, (The Town of Ramsgate (http://www.qype.co.uk/place/831341-The-Town-Of-Ramsgate-London) ) this pub changed it's name to the more boring Prospect of Whitbey (named after a boat moored nearby) after a fire gutted the much more interesting Devil's Tavern, in the 18th century. Shame. I like the more colourful name.

This pub is cozy and has a warm gas fire and beautiful Thames views. However... this is not a free house, alas, so Prospect of Whitby is associated with one alcohol and food provider. This is generally thought to mean bad food and alcohol, though my beer was just fine. It is also not quite as old as you'd think - it only dates to the 19th century owing to a fire. However, the floors do indeed date to the 1500s, so think of all the pirates and thieves and prostitutes who walked on them over the last 500 years!

I love The Prospect for three reasons: 1. Pewter bar 2. The Greatest used to drink there 3. The best views of the Thames on the river 3.1 probably the best Guinness I've had in London for a long time There are huge amounts of historical reasons alone to visit the Prospect - it used to be a smugglers den, it housed the first prizefights in London, the noose outside was really used - but in terms of everything else, you'll find solid pub food (better than a Wetherspoons, not quite a gastropub) and really, really good beers on tap. There is a fantastic barman, not sure of his name but he's Italian who is always joking and having a laugh with the clientele as well. Beyond this, despite being on the Thames it has only a few tourists heading to it every week; this works out well if you're a local and don't fancy heading to The Dickens Inn for a decent beer in the area which as it's part of St Katherine's Docks is typically rammed with tourists. Prices are standard London prices, but really you're coming to The Prospect because of the views. Or possibly becaused The Greatest drank here.

Actually pretty impressive although we did find ourselves there when no tour parties were present. The bar staff were polite and helpful. The beer selection was exceptional, including local breweries and a personal favourite of mine - Dark Star! And the beer was well kept too. Food was your standard pub grub, but it couldn't be faulted, a decent portion of cod and chips with my guest opting for a fresh looking ham, egg and chips. A few drinks and lunch came to £45 so fairly reasonable overall and impressive.

What a place! From incredible food and amazing views from the upstairs terrace. Staff are friendly too. Glad we found it!

To be avoided! It is the quintessential London tourist-trap, serving over-priced school dinners type food to naive elderly tourists. To be fair, I've tried this pub several times over the past few years and have been sorely disappointed each time. Service is slow (sometimes non-existent) and you are guaranteed to be vastly out-numbered by German OAPs fresh off their tour bus. If you're in the area, try the Captain Kidd instead, or the Town of Ramsgate, both within walking distance.

One of my favourite pubs in London and really well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. It is located a short walk away from Wapping station and is situated down a cobbled road lined with warehouses. The pub itself looks small from the outside but is roomy inside with tiled floors, exposed beams and an open fire. The ambience is extremely cosy and friendly and you could happily spend a lazy Sunday here or have a relaxed gathering with friends. There is also a back garden, which is excellent for drinking in the Summer and has a great view across the Thames to Canary Wharf. I had a birthday party out there once and it was really good fun so they are fine with groups descending on them!

Enjoyed my visit for the history, location, atmosphere and buzz of the place. My friend, Charles Dickens,knew it well because he lived up the road at the Grapes while writing 'Our Mutual Friend'. Sitting on the Thameside terrace, the setting was picturesque, with a weeping willow tree for shade, and looking past the big lamps (could they once have been gas?) at the wide sweep of the Thames across to Canary Wharf. Service was swift and friendly- an excellent chicken and chorizzo pie with good veg and a small jug of gravy sauce (which I found fascinating to dunk everything in, while it remained hot),With a pint of good lager to swill it all down, the bill was surprisingly inexpensive. I look forward to my next visit.

Incredible food, historic atmosphere, super friendly staff! Ask for the local, east London brews and pies!!!

It's a great old pub for a lazy afternoon and the views over the Thames are stunning. The quality of drink and food are quite good and I would give this a higher rating if only the service was a bit quicker. When the place gets even slightly busy it can take ages to get a drink and even longer to receive a food order. Go on a Sunday and eat at the BBQ, the wait is much less for the food fresh from the Grill.

Not my favourite, and not worth going to more than once. When I say "touristy" I'm not scoffing at going somewhere popular with tourists or with a bit of history; it's more that this place assumes it can get away with having surly bar staff, underwhelming food and high prices, because tourists won't know any different. For shame! (P.S. Walk 2 mins down the road and visit the Captain Kidd instead)

Steeped in history. A favourite place of mine. My relatives ran the pub in the 1940s and history just seeps out of the walls. Build right on the river bank with great views of the Thames. Near to execution dock with numerous stories with regards to its past. A must to viit for a drink or two and see whats on offer.

Great pub,great river views.Decent pub grub. I like it. It's a little out of the way but worth the effort to find. Nice outside space and wonderful inside 'ye olde worlde' charm inside.

I absolutely love this pub in Wapping. Its a pub for drinking and making use of the views on a sunny day. However, I don't believe its a place that should be known for its food. Ive been back plenty of times however. Can not fault the service, the drink, the bar itself. Its great!

Such a nice pub in a lovely part of London. I called to book a table for 20 people, when I got there they had no record of my booking. The staff were fantastic and put us in the function room as all other areas were busy. We had a lovely quiet room which made it easy to talk. We also appreciated the great views as it was all windows. The food was good and we were very impressed that they went out of their way to ensure our group was comfy. Would recommend for large groups or just meeting up with some friends. The noose is a nice touch!

This place was filled with amazing history and was a good representation of a good ole pub! The outer deck will be busy on a nice day but don't worry, you can take your beer to the riverside if you like!

Tourist hell. People from all over the world come to visit this "traditional" old pub, often delivered by coach. Building itself is old, quant and historic as one would expect from one of the original London docker's pubs with lovely riverside views, original suspension-wrecking brick paved streets and multi-million pound apartments created from former wharf warehouses. For people expecting traditional, home-made pub food - you may be disappointed. Looks like mass-produced, pre-made and cooked on premise type fayre that one gets in the Harvester. By all means visit as the history can't be denied and is a great spot for a pint but please don't think that this establishment offers the height of achievement in terms of "pub food". Pricey - for what it is.

Great building, location and river views. Pretty good selection of beer here too. But don't eat here, food is expensive, average quality and it took us over an hour to get our Sunday lunch. To be fair they did tell us it would take 45mins but not sure why as the place was not very busy. Anyway at the end the waiter told us that I could pay his gratuity (tip) though my credit card or he would accept cash (seriously)..... So to summarise, great place for a beer but eat elsewhere.
