"Maiko doesn’t offer a wide selection of ice creams, but what it does offer — earthy, borderline savory matcha soft serve — is worth an order. Offered straight or swirled with vanilla, the soft serve also appears in parfaits, topped with shiratama mochi and layered with matcha chiffon, or as a float on top of an iced matcha latte. Normies can stick to plain vanilla, but why would you?" - Michelle Lopez, Janey Wong

"The Cesar Chavez Boulevard location of this matcha chain is primarily known for its soft serve, but its matcha-happy shave ice is just as tasty (and, admittedly, often involves ice cream). Flaky, matcha syrup-drenched ice supports toppings like adzuki beans, shiratama (a type of mochi), and/or matcha-vanilla soft serve. The earthy notes of the matcha balance the sweetness of the additions, making it a nice, almost savory approach to the treat." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"3416 SE Cesar Estrada Chavez Blvd. The Portland outpost of this matcha chain serves a lovely ujikintoki, a specific Japanese shave ice made with matcha and adzuki beans. Little squishy shiratama dango, or mochi balls, stay perched on the side, with condensed milk for sweetness. For those seeking a little ice cream as well, Maiko offers a variety of sundae-esque shave ice options with matcha soft serve at the center." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"Located off of Southeast Cesar Chavez and Powell, Matcha Cafe Maiko is a Hawaii-based franchise that serves all the matcha things, from a simple matcha soft serve to a decadent matcha parfait filled with toppings like candied chestnuts and matcha chiffon cake. One of the highlights of Maiko is the freedom and flexibility of adding said toppings to anything on the menu, including the springy shiratama mochi balls. Favorite place for all things matcha! First time coming here on Mothers Day! I’m sad I didn’t discover this place sooner. We loved it so much we went back for more the next day, and let me tell you, we drove 30 minutes for this place. The ratings are accurate on here. Yay- another place from the Bay Area has now made its way to PDX! This is my favorite place for a matcha drink (so far). We’ve been to a lot of boba spots, but I am a fan of their matcha quality. Just a tad sweet and more bitter, just how I like it. You can really taste the quality of the powder/tea. Other places, the matcha drinks are too sweet or watered down. We’ve tried their iced matcha, matcha frappe, matcha ice cream in a waffle cone, and matcha with jelly. The matcha ice cream and frappe are so deliciously creamy, oh my. Warning: you may get addicted! It’s creamy but isn’t overly sweet. My daughter loves it! I’m not supposed to have dairy, but I treated myself to that frappe and thoroughly enjoyed my treat. If you’re allergic to dairy, I suggest getting the iced matcha drink. They can’t substitute for milk alternatives, so that’s a good option. I like that they feature new flavors for a limited time to keep things fun and interesting. I can’t wait for their ube items to come back! This is a popular spot though. So plan for it to be a little busy on weekends. The staff are friendly!

Absolutely loved our visit to Premium Matcha Café Maiko! We tried the Ube and Matcha Soft Serve ice cream, and the flavor was spot-on — rich, earthy matcha with just the right amount of sweetness. The soft serve was incredibly creamy and smooth, and the addition of mochi and red bean paste gave it an authentic Japanese twist. The chewy mochi balls were fresh and soft, giving each bite a fun, satisfying texture. The roasted matcha powder sprinkled on top added a nice touch of bitterness that brought everything together. Prices were fair for the quality.

Google
Summary - cute place to come eat some matcha desserts or drinks. Apparently the best matcha place to go to in Portland? Food/drinks - A lot of options to choose from and depending on what you get, it can either be balanced in sweetness or not. Matcha itself wasn’t overpowering so it doesn’t taste like that herbal smell. The pricing can also be worth it depending on what you get. Service - just depending on when you go and thankfully for us, our stuff came out relatively quick but that could’ve been bc we came in late at night. Location - can have a little weird parking situation but the area itself does provide a lot of spaces. Interior wise, seating can be limited if it’s crowded but is decorated cute and aesthetically overall. My main issue with this place is the menu. If the second flavor, aka vanilla, isn’t going to be available, the menu should be changed to “rotating second flavor” instead. This was my second time here and again, I experienced being told how vanilla wasn’t available anymore. If that was the case, please just let it be known that the second flavor will just depend on the day/week/whatever.

Google
This spot is spot on! a real hidden gem. If you’re a matcha lover, you’re in for a treat. They specialize in all things matcha and offer an impressive variety: lattes, shaved ice, soft serve, frappes, floats, parfaits, and even in-house mochi. We got the Maiko Special, which came with green tea ice cream, chewy mochi balls, matcha cake, and sweet red bean. Everything was so well-balanced and delicious. You can really taste the quality in each component, especially the mochi, which is made fresh in-house. Can’t wait to come back and try more!

Google
Im so happy that there is a Cafe Maiko in town. Ive been to a few others and love the matcha. The ice cream here is a little.sweeter than Im used to but nice and creamy. Alao the service is very friendly and helpful. The parking lot has a lot of spaces.

Hana

Google
Very kind service, always a smile on the smaller cashiers face. Delicious matcha, plenty of fun options, and 🤌 matchaaaa. Everything was fresh. And there are alot of options for toppings, so you can DIY your matcha!

Mae H

Google
Best matcha spot in town! Comfortable and inviting seating area, nice staff, and many different drink options..this has become a weekly stop 🌱🍵.

Google
The BEST matcha ice cream Ive ever tasted. I got the matcha float but honestly next time I would just go for the ice cream because after having the ice cream the latte underneath felt mid, but this place exceeded my expectations a million times. The workers were also extremely sweet this place is a 10/10 for me.

Yelp
Black sesame is back! I still like the ube best though :) - left one is bumper - right is a soft serve with mochi balls and cake add on

Yelp
Matcha Maiko is one of my go to spots for a sweet treat! I've been here more than I can count lolll. They keep things interesting with rotational flavors and currently is black sesame, but in the past, they've featured ube, cheese, strawberry, and sakura. Every flavor I've tried has been really good. The space inside is bright, clean, and spacious, with plenty of seating, making it a good spot to catch up with friends. It's also a popular hangout spot for locals and tends to get crowded on weekends, but if you're lucky, you might snag a table. While the pricing isn't the cheapest, the quality of the matcha and desserts more than justifies it and I believe they handmade both mochi cakes in house as well. Highly recommend checking it out.

Yelp
If you're craving or looking for matcha, here it is!! I'm picky when it comes to matcha but here you can taste the quality and texture of delicious matcha. Not too sweet. Just a perfect balance. The place is located in a little plaza which can be a little hidden. You'll be surprised where it's located when you look it up. There's a decent amount of parking but lucky when we got there we got a parking right away and it wasn't crowded. Service was great. The place is pretty big inside. Plenty of seats. Good hang out spot or to chill for a bit with your friends. I will definitely be back when I go back to Portland for some delicious matcha! Highly recommend this place!

Jason C.

Yelp
I mostly just come here for the soft serve. It is a lot of ice cream I find in one serving, so I always feel filled with the soft cream afterwards in a good way. The flavor is beautifully matcha with a pleasant, earthy bitterness. The texture is perfectly creamy. Definitely best matcha soft serve in town!

Cheryl L.

Yelp
My half Japanese companion was craving matcha ice cream. I was yelping and saw this place which got great reviews. The matcha soft serve photo got us. It is located in a strip mall, very usual for it to be in there. I was quite surprised that the place was bigger than I thought. It has plenty of seats. It is a local hangout for folks to study or as they call it, "the 3rd living room." The matcha soft serve was delicious. Just the right amount, however a bit pricey at $7. I would come back if I lived there.

Danni N.

Yelp
I love getting matcha from here. I tend to get the matcha latte with oat milk to keep it simple, but the black sesame is pretty good!

David T.

Yelp
We love this place and always end up coming here after a little dinner date or when we have guests fly in to visit us. Cute little shop in a plaza with decent amount of parking. There is seating inside, but does get crowded and busy at certain times, but it's worth it! My wife loves the matcha here and we normally do the soft serve in a cone. I will usually get the swirl, which can come with vanilla or sometimes they have a seasonal (ube or strawberry) that are excellent choices as well! Their lattes are also very good and the matcha taste is perfect. Would recommend if you're a matcha lover to try this place out!

Carmela G.

Yelp
If you're craving for anything matcha, they have it here! If you're looking for a dessert place where everything is not too sweet, you've come to the right place.

Samy S.

Yelp
Premium Matcha Cafe does not miss at all!! It's one of the best matcha cafes that I've had in Portland. The cafe is so cute and had table and chairs to sit to enjoy your drinks or soft serve ice cream with friends, family or your partners!! They also have limited flavors that they serve like ube flavor or strawberry matcha drink!! Service was very friendly as well. You just order at the cash register and they will call out your number to pick up the yummy ice cream or drinks!! I always get the soft serve matcha mix with vanilla ice cream and the cheese matcha latte. The cheese matcha latte is my favorite! The cheese on top was chefs kiss! It add a salty element to the drink which I love! The soft serve matcha was yummy as well! You taste the matcha and it wasn't too strong! I got the opportunity to try the strawberry matcha drink (which was for only a limited time), and it was delicious!! I come here often and will continue to do so!!

Sam L.

Yelp
Whenever I'm on the west coast I try to go to a cafe matcha maiko. Chicago has some great spots for matcha but this place just offers so many things and theyre all delicious. Their matcha ice cream is super flavorful, and they also offer delicious matcha and hojicha teas, along with some really unique creations. Definitely will be back next time I'm in portland!

Naly S.

Yelp
I love matcha! This is the best place to go. It's my family's favorite "sweet treat" after meals. Service is always spot on. The staff is always nice and conversational. The menu can be daunting, so don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. :) The place itself is small. Parking is kind of horrendous even for it being in a plaza. Be prepared in warmer days that the lines inside get crazy and then the back seating is almost always full to the brim. This place is consistently delish, I always recommend my family from out of town to try it before they leave!

Danny L.

Yelp
Drinks: - The Hōjicha latte (hot) was very good. I got 50% sweet, which surprisingly not sweet enough for me. I usually have the opposite problem where the drink is too sweet, but in my opinion leaving the sweetness be is the right move here. I don't think they offer 75% sweet. If they did, I think that would be perfect Food: - The Matcha Float is a must try. The matcha isn't too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment for any dessert). It's served on top of what seems to be an iced matcha latte, so you get a free iced drink out of it basically Ambience: - The ordering area is decorated to kind of feel like a street vendor counter which I thought was cool - All the furniture is wood and gives a nice warm vibe - There's lots of seating here Overall: The matcha here is so good it's literally the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. Honestly I don't think there's anywhere else in Portland that can compare in terms of quality to the matcha here (at least I haven't found it yet). The drinks and desserts didn't take too long to come out. I've already been to Cafe Maiko multiple times and I don't plan on slowing down my visits to this place

Shauna F.

Yelp
This place was popping on a Saturday night. Went in before going to studio one and so glad we did. The matcha latte and float were both amazing. Great flavors! Will be back

Sy C.

Yelp
I've tried the shaved ice and it was yummy but too much for a single person, or at least for me. Next time, I'll have to ask for a smaller option. Unfortunately they do not offer plant based milk options. I hope this changes because their matcha is tasty!

Miki M.

Yelp
I am always down for a matcha delight! Their menu offers both matcha and hojicha items. Since I don't see much hojicha in other cafes, I do tend to order a hojicha item for myself. My husband likes their matcha soft serve so that's his go-to. The servers are always calm and patient when we order. I got the Kokuto Hojicha Latte with soy milk while my husband got the Matcha and Vanilla Mix Soft Serve. My drink was great with the soy milk as the non-dairy substitute however the sweetener they use contains dairy. I like the silky brown sugar jelly in the drink, it adds a nice caramel flavor to the overall bitter roasted flavor of the hojicha. The flavor of the soft serve is great however the texture isn't as smooth as it could be, there's sometimes some icy bits in the ice cream. But that doesn't distract from enjoying it.

Jeanie N.

Yelp
It's matcha madness here. If you love matcha it'll be heavenly, if not then there's basic vanilla. The folks here will guide you towards options you can pick if you need some support. We like getting the #2 large Maiko Special. It has soft serve, cornflakes, sponge cake, red beans, matcha powder and mochi balls. Friendly folks that own the place. It's pretty busy on weekends but service is fairly quick. Plenty of outlets if you need a workspace and a lot of tables. It's great for a small group of friends especially after a movie at Studio One. Appreciate that they are open until 10

Xand G.

Yelp
I really wanted this place to be stellar. We did go near close of business during a weekday, so maybe it wasn't as good as it could have been. The matcha in the ice cream was gritty and not super good. The place seemed a bit dirty but again it was likely after a rush that we arrived. I will try again and hope it will be better!

Amanda M.

Yelp
First time trying Portland's Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko. I've had it at other locations, but came here to try their Sakura soft serve mainly as it's a special they have. The Sakura soft serve was really light in flavor as expected but not that floral. I think it's because the matcha is a much stronger taste that it kinda hid it. I shoulda have gotten full Sakura instead of mix, oh well. Soft serve was good. The matcha soft serve had nice matcha taste. The mixed Maiko special was probably my favorite, lots of soft serve with a mixture of different toppings adding lots of different textures. The Maiko special had sweet red beans, mochi, cake, lychee, some brown sugar, and corn flakes with the soft serve. The orders were made quickly and good amount of seating. There's also parking on site here too.

Daphne S.

Yelp
If you know what good matcha is, this is even better. Do not skip this place!! It is soooo good! My family and I come pretty often for holidays and celebrations. The matcha is so rich and balanced. Parking is a bit difficult here I will say. It's in a busy area. The inside is pretty spacious with seating. The menu is HUGE and there is so much to try! I LOVE the matcha float but wish it had less ice and more ice cream.

Alex B.

Yelp
Ordered a regular float but 90% of the drink was ice. (see photo). I'd be cautious ordering any iced drinks here. Not cool.

Nicol L.

Yelp
Their matcha tasted and felt like quality matcha! I've tried a few matcha places through Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, and Cafe Maiko exudes that kind of vibe. I love the matcha teddy bear. Some matcha places have a grainy feel or are mixed with too much milk, but theirs is very sweet and perfect. They are pretty expensive though!

Megan C.

Yelp
overall: 4.5/5 service: 5/5 ambiance: 4.5/5 food: 4.5/5 as a matcha enthusiast, my visits to matcha cafe maiko have always been welcomed! i've been coming to this establishment for a few years now and am now just finally writing a review. here's what i usually order: the matcha parfait (i believe is #2 on the menu), the matcha ice cream in a cup, the matcha latte float, and the matcha cheese foam drink (#42)! the rising prices are a bit painful, but matcha is always a nice treat to have while spending time with friends or just to treat yourself to. i do wish that there is less ice used in the drinks, but that could just be me. i love how the matcha tastes without being too sweet or overpowering, just the right amount! so far, they have had ube, strawberry, cheese foam, and the black sesame flavors. i would recommend coming by to try the ube flavor when they have it! always a good time at matcha maiko :).

Yeonji S.

Yelp
Drove from Washington to Oregon for this Matcha shop 5/5 premium ceremonial grade matcha. The BEAR was sooooo cute. Tasted like bingsu! The cheese+ matcha icecream was SO YUM!!! Tasted like caramel and matcha. Cone was soft and creamy.

Paul K.

Yelp
Matcha; a match made in maiko. I thoroughly enjoyed the matcha soft serve. Each bite was potent and splendid. I think everything on the menu has matcha in it, which makes it unified. Overall, there was plenty of seating for both a larger group or more intimate setting. This would be a great dessert spot after lunch. Because the items are either frozen or liquid, the service is quick as a cheetah.

Yan W.

Yelp
3.5 this time!! First of all, it was fairly busy but it seemed like most customers got their matcha goodies, just a couple people in front of me. There was no AC, especially the heatwave started, without AC in the room, it felt very stuffy, especially with a good amount of people. Yes, ice cream can cool you off but it just felt very warm still. I ordered their soft serve matcha for $5.80 with extra matcha powder on top. Though the server was very friendly and commented on my Pokemon case (thank you!), the service was very slow. Making ice cream and adding a few mochi and toppings shouldn't take too long but they were on the slower side. That's why it felt extra stuffy while I waited. Ice cream: very smooth, strong, but not bitter gross. The flavor stayed in your mouth and tastebud for awhile. It was addicting and you can't get any better matcha soft serve than here!

Austin N.

Yelp
A great place to check out if you are a fan of matcha! This specially shop offers a wide variety of matcha desserts! The menu can definitely be a bit overwhelming with all the matcha items on there. I really enjoyed the flavor of the matcha soft serve, it has the right amount of sweetness and bitterness to make it taste authentic. I've tried a handful of their other options as well but wasn't too crazed on the various specials and shaved ice with toppings. Ambiance is quite nice with the decor, with a good amount of seating inside. The service was nice and helpful when trying to order something for my parents that do not like sweet drinks!

Joanne S.

Yelp
Best matcha place in the area. Love that the place closes later than a lot of other coffee shops. I come here to study frequently. Today there was a limited drink flavor: matcha with strawberry foam. It was good! They offer Hojicha along with matcha which is super nice! I come here way too much! I also really like how they have a seasonal ice cream flavor. Ones I've had is sesame and ube.

Cassidy N.

Yelp
Coming in on the weekend was pretty busy. Luckily when we came in everyone had already ordered. There were so many options on the menu. I wanted to try the parfait since it had a little bit of everything. The ube and matcha combination worked out perfectly. The matcha was not that sweet and the ube was perfectly sweeten. There were a couple of tables for indoor seating. The parking lot on the weekend was crowded but on the other side where you can get you car washed is where you could find more parking. I would like to try their strawberry soft serve the next time I am back.

Adam P.

Yelp
This is a very interesting spot for the area, for sure. Awesome selection of matcha deserts, ice cream and drinks. Server was very friendly and the interior space is very simple and cute. We tried the mixed (matcha and vanilla iced cream) parfait which was very unique with layers of cake, jellies, red beans and of course iced cream. Second we tried the chocolate matcha iced drink. Both had great flavor and were not overly sweet (that's what we look for).

Maria V.

Yelp
If you love, Matcha and ice cream, this is your spot. I have come here various times and everyone is always nice. It can't get kind of loud depending on if it's the weekend or not. The space itself is big perfect if you want to study and they rotate their flavors, so you'll always be able to try something new.

Mia G.

Yelp
perfect bev !!! i love the seasonal flavors sm ;) i'm a picky girl when it comes to matcha and i absolutely loved it!! The workers are so kind too.

Sim L.

Yelp
It's always been consistently good no matter what time of day, time of year, or who that's working. The inside is always bustling and the service is always friendly. It's hard to not like this place.

Lisa P.

Yelp
So dang good. Speedy service & delicious matcha! There are plenty of tables inside for seating for small parties.

Chelsea J.

Yelp
This place undeniably has every right to claim that they have the best matcha in the world, because WOW. Absolutely the best matcha I have ever had. The moment you walk in, it smells like heaven. The employees working were very sweet as well. If you like cutesy Japanese dessert shops, you have to check this place out. They also give you all black hello kitty spoons to eat your ice cream with and they are so cute.

Michaela D.

Yelp
Beautiful i love this place it is always delicious! My go to for whenever I am craving sweets. The workers are very nice and always welcoming!

Dat T.

Yelp
Would probably give this place 3.5 stars. Imperfect review, as I think I would have given it 4 stars if I had chosen a different menu item. I got the matcha latte kokuto float, which comes with a brown sugar jelly at the bottom. The swirl matcha soft serve was delicious, and the brown sugar jelly also tasted great - however, I was very disappointed that there was barely any latte component at all. The drink was almost entirely ice, surrounded by the brown sugar jelly on bottom and soft serve on top. For $7, I definitely think this was very pricey, but I do think the other menu items would have been much better. I would be willing to return to try this matcha place again, as it does seem that their matcha is high quality, and their other ingredients (like their mochi) are made from scratch. The cafe itself is pretty nice, with plenty of open seating and tables. Would be a good quiet spot to study or get some work done.

Sophia L.

Yelp
I love their hojicha lattes with the kokuto jelly!! Decided to splurge with a combo soft serve float. Perfect sweet treat if you're craving matcha.

Ben C.

Yelp
I love matcha but not this mucha. Parking is horribly tight in the strip plaza. Excited to indulge, walking was not what you expect ~ felt like a deserted empty clinic with leftover plants and sun-faded posters. The front ordering counter is a cluttered confusion and silent blank stare greetings makes one wonder what to do. The old printed photo menu in Japanese was not helpful in trying something here for the first time. The mochi mix ordered was a mush cup of sample sized mini bites. Latte was green. Nothing zen inside of this tea house unless you enjoy relaxing in a plain dark room with Costco foldable tables and chairs. Purely a to-go stop for a quick matcha fix. Wakatta for Portland but expected more of an energy boost from this green tea experience.

Becky G.

Yelp
I've always been impressed with the endless amount of premium matcha items on the menu at this cute little cafe, but this is the first time I've made it in when ube was in season. I've been dreaming about trying the ube matcha swirl and it was everything I hoped it would be! On top of that, the service was extremely fast. I was in and out within 2 minutes. So glad I made the stop today!

Yajaira R.

Yelp
The service is fast and the matcha float I got was really good 10/10 experience. I would come again they also have various items to try.

Pin E.

Yelp
I've been to Matcha Maiko in Seattle & New York and I didn't think there's anything special about it! This location though is amazing! Thanks for giving us high quality matcha soft serve! Comparing to Nana's Green Tea in Seattle, the matcha flavor at Matcha Maiko is stronger and is less sweet. They also have plenty of space to sit and work with good wifi!

Anthony C.

Yelp
The Matcha in here is made fresh, mixed into their ice cream's, and other delicious desserts. This place has amazing options and is one of the best Matcha places to go to if you love that kind of flavor and are into that kind of thing. I highly recommend coming here and trying the ice cream, first of all, and may be a little extra something like mochi balls on the side. Parking is a little crammed but that's probably because it was the weekend and the staff here is very accommodating and kind.

Tatum J.

Yelp
Im so excited that I foubd this place! I LOVE matcha! And its so hard to find good quality matcha places anywhere! I moved to Oregon from LA where i was spoiled with great spots so im really happy I found a good one in Portland. The place was packed when I went so I had to wait a little to order but thats ok. I got one of the matcha ice cream bears and it was so cute! I will totally be back!

Julie T.

Yelp
I ordered a ice matcha drink and it was just the right amount of everything! The jelly on the bottom added a nice texture to the drink. The workers were friendly and provided excellent service. The shop is so cute and very spacious. I arrived at 6pm and the parking lot was pretty full due to the other businesses around. I was able to find a spot, but at that moment it seemed like I got the last one.

Derrick D.

Yelp
This is the first time me trying anything matcha. This is a cute place with lots of options, all made using matcha. See my ratings for things we got below: 5/5 - Mix vanilla matcha soft serve - very yummy and loved it. 5/5 - Maiko special - it has some cake, corn flakes and red bean kinda thing which was unique and overall goes really well. 3/5 - Matcha chocolate float - it was okay. Overall would say 5/5 for the uniqueness and good tasting items.

Diana X.

Yelp
Such a cute shop! I love everything matcha so this place was definitely for me. Can't wait to come back and try more things on the menu.

paramaed k.

Yelp
The taste are great, i try both float and ice cream with waffle cone. I totally love it!

Kiara Mae S.

Yelp
I love love love this place! I am a huge fan of matcha so this place is definitely a go to. My favorite flavors in their rotation is the matcha and ube combo. My go to order is the Mochi Bumper with mixed ice cream. The facility looks small from the outside but they have a nice seating area in the inside. A great place to talk with friends or study. They also have bathrooms open for customers. They do get busy later in the day and especially on weekends. But it is worth it!

Maisie K.

Yelp
First time trying this placed based on a friend's recommendation and it was busy on a Saturday night, right up until closing. I didn't have a lot of stomach space to try more than the matcha soft serve, but was glad that I did. The texture was firm without being icy. You will probably need to like matcha if you're going to enjoy their ice cream, as it's fairly strong. I actually think the matcha level could be dialed back slightly with a little more sugar for better flavor balance. The amount of matcha feels just a touch overboard, as it starts to toe the line of bitterness. It's still good (and I do love matcha), but I'm also quite picky with how the flavors finish on your palate. Overall, I'd recommend trying it... and will come back for the matcha and vanilla swirl or ube, when it's back from the seasonal menu.
