"Where to See Gold—and Spend It—in San Jose San Jose's Pre-Columbian Gold Museum has an impressive collection of gold objects, yes. It's remarkable to see a collection of sculptures, tools, and jewelry made with this coveted metal, some of which date back to 500 AD. There's even Costa Rica 's first gold coin, minted in 1825. But the building contains other treasures, including the national coin museum, a high-end gift shop, and a pretty plaza that was a welcome relief from the city's sooty grayness."

Fascinating set of mini-museums including a currency museum (numismatic museum), temporary art installations and a beautiful collection of pre-Colombian gold artifacts. If you are visiting the national museum of Costa Rica or the Jade museum this one is just a short walk away. You could do all 3 in an afternoon. Worth a visit!

If you happen visit nearby National Theater, it is no-brainer to visit Gold Museum that is right around the corner. It is primarily archeological museum on the basement floor dedicated to native art and coin/paper money museum of Costa Rican currency on ground floor (middle floor is mix of pre-columbian gold art and modern art exhibitions). Lockers on the ground floor are handy to leave your backpack and pass the security check. Should take under an hour to check all floors.

I recommend you go to this museum. It is extremely interesting. It goes through how they found gold, what they made it into, what they used it for. It’s very interesting. The cost to get in is $16.50 approximately.

We had half a day in San Jose and chose to check out this museum. It is fantastic. Very educational, great collections, and interesting architecture for the building. It is an inverted underground pyramid. If you have time, make this stop.
