"Disco Inferno on Ice For an urban musical ice-skating experience, check out Switzerland’s largest pop-up ice rink. Every winter, Locarno - near Lake Maggiore, in the district of Ticino - welcomes skaters of all abilities to glide (or stumble) around on the disco-ball illuminated ice. The rink sits on the beautiful Piazza Grande: the city's main commercial and cultural center. Four large transparent igloo bars skirt the rink and serve drinks, food and even host live music. Children can skate for free and lessons are available. Even for non-skaters, the wintery square proves a popular hang-out and shopping destination."

Piazza Grande is the central square in old town Locarno. It's a pretty big square adorned with beautiful Italian style vivid color houses. A famous summer film festival is held here. Place is cool to walk and sip a drink in one of outdoor cafes, however it's deserted at night

During the film festival, the square was the centerpiece.

We came in the summer from Ascona to Locarno by local bus to explore its famous Piazza Grande and the surrounding old town. Our idea was to have dinner somewhere in the mazes of the old town. In the evening the magnificent Piazza was already quite empty, so we could admire it very well. The Piazza is bordered by rows of colorful three-story houses. Narrow streets go off in different directions. Nice compact old town.

Spacious town square. Got there around 8 and everything close except restaurants. Very few pedestrians. In Swiss, most things shut down after 8pm so it feels like ghost town. Be very careful when walking here. Its easy to twist your ankles.

Pleasant square, surrounded by well preserved old buildings and various shops and restaurants, with streets leading to old town. However, nearby Ascona somehow felt more pleasant and cozy, if I had to choose between the two.

The vibrant heart of charming Locarno, bustling with shops, restaurants, cafes, hotels & more. Overflowing with chairs and celebrity buzz during the prestigious annual Locarno International Film Festival! 🏞️ 🛍️ 🥙 ☕️ 🎬

Yelp
One of the most beautiful places in TI! Simply awesome, I was super-impressed when I was here for the first time! You got plenty of cafés and restaurants on the Piazza, in summertime, it is so relaxed here and simply like the atmosphere between the coloured houses. Also, during summer, there are several events on the Piazza, if you got the chance to attend one, do so!
