"The Best Gelato in Florence, Italy? On a cool night in November, walking alone from an outdoor food market in the center of Florence , I decided to indulge my sweet tooth yet again. I stopped for a "snack," one that I would never eat just before dinner back home yet couldn't get enough of in Florence...gelato. Eating gelato, with its creamy texture and multitude of vibrant flavors, is certainly one of the food highlights of being in Italy. Florence has plenty of excellent gelato shops, or gelaterie. Perché no! was my favorite choice because of its convenient location right in the historic center, between Piazza della Signoria and Piazza della Repubblica, and because of its flavors. This combination of persimmon and dark chocolate made eating gelato outside in the cold just before dinner seem perfectly normal."

"Far from fancy, Gelateria Perchè No, one of the oldest gelato establishments in Florence, is a family-run shop with an ice cream counter dominating the space; "Perchè No" is written in cursive neon lights, which helps passersby identify it from the street. Founded in 1939, back when proper refrigeration was in short supply, Gelateria Perchè No started experimenting with egg-white spumoni and other cool-but-not-cold whipped sweet treats. Today, those creations live on in the form of signature semifreddo offerings." - Bridget Arsenault

More a 4.5 than a four. Most of the flavours were standard but well executed. The almond granita was extremely refreshing on what was a balmy night in Florence. When you are in Florence try Vivoli first and if you are still left hankering for more gelato then Why not!...

Google
This is a must-try for Gelato in Florence and more! Prices very reasonable. The 3 euro cone/cup for 2 flavors is big enough for me. The quality of the Gelato is very good. I have tried many different shops, like any other tourist. And this is the best and their quality is consistent. In the summer, you can easily recognize it by the long queue outside. Even then, their service is excellent and they will allow you to try it before buying. Yes you can also sit on a bench and eat your Gelato. I do that sometimes in the winter. Do browse and know what you want and be ready to order when you get to the front. If you want to taste, you can request but don't be offended when they serve others who know what they want first. They have a business to run too. Why should they make a buying customer wait to serve someone who may not buy after they taste? Or who don't even know what they want? Tell whomever is available what you want and get your money/card ready to pay! And you will enjoy good and fast service!

Google
Great Gelato spot in the tourist area. 3 euro for small cup or small cone. Many different flavors and they swap some out daily, but keep the standard flavors daily. Pistachio is delicious.

Google
I got a cup with 1/2 Stracciatella and 1/2 Cream Gelato Firstly, the portion size, and this cup was pretty large. Finishing it all required a good amount of effort I thought the Stracciatella was pretty good - albeit more liquidy than I would like. While the chocolate specks inside stayed solid, this scoop began to overflow slightly the second I received the cup. I prefer the gelato more solid, like the one I'd had the day before The crema was fine. I didn't think it was particularly special, and mostly just tasted like a really soft vanilla. Overall, decent-to-pretty-good gelato, but nothing special. 8/10

Google
A must for any gelato fan, this place is amazing! I had the sesame, fior do latte and honey, and the rice which were unreal. Good amount of choice and the flavours are really impressive. Highly recommend!

Google
We really liked Perche no! and found their gelato to be very good. See the menu as you walk into the gelateria so you will know what traditional and creative gelatos are available on the day of your visit. We tried pistachio and hazelnut, both creamy and delicious. Caffe was pretty good as well but a bit less enjoyed on the day. Seems Perche no! has been around since 1939. That makes sense. Their gelato is really good.

Google
Best ice cream in Firenze. I've been going to this store for the past years because it's simply delicious and they use very high quality ingredients. Try the pistaccio, nocciola and fragola.

NSLondon

Google
Some of the best gelato in Florence. The queue moves quickly so don’t be put off if a tour group has shown up. The pistachio and salted caramel were both great but many other flavours are on offer.

Yelp
There's no shortage of gelaterias in Firenze - there are so many that in fact it was almost overwhelming to decide which ones to go. I consulted my friends who had been to the city before as well as Yelp to compile a list of ones to try out. Perchè No! made the cut, and since it was across the way from where we just had dinner - it was only natural for us to check it out. Off the bat, Perchè No gets bonus points for having a neon sign. While the interior was somewhat generic in decor, that exterior was a nice touch that drew me in. The flavors were there as expected as soon as we entered; there are a variety of sizes in cups and cones, and ultimately I went with a cup of stracciatella and cream. I enjoyed both gelati - they had good consistency and were creamy; gelato is generally better than ice cream IMO, and my argument held up here. Service was good - we were taken care of promptly and overall I had a solid experience at Perchè No. Amongst the sea of gelaterias in Firenze, they are worth seeking out.

Yelp
There are plenty of gelato places in Florence, but do make an effort to try this one! It's on a side street but just off the main touristy street and within short walking distance from other major attractions, so it's not really out of the wait. You do have to wait in line but it's worth it. They have their flavors of the day posted outside the shop so you can make your choices as you wait. They do have quite a lot of flavor to choose from! Once it's your turn, the staff is extremely patient and helpful with you, like you were the only customer in the store, they answer your questions, offer samples, and don't try to herd you through so they can tend to the next customer. Totally delicious and very natural tasting. If you see the sesame flavor, get it! Though I doubt you will go wrong with any. There's not much seating available; a bench inside and maybe a table outside.

Sandra H.

Yelp
Friendly service and fabulous gelato. We tried other places but this was our favorite and we came here multiple times. The small choices are bigger than you think and they let you choose three flavors. Hazelnut was my fave. Yum.

Ally W.

Yelp
Must. Get. The. Sesame. Gelato. The sesame gelato is a milk and honey gelato with crunchy sesame brittle mixed in -- so creative with flavor and texture. For something refreshing, you can try one of the summer fruit flavors like cantaloupe or peach. The store is small and narrow, so order quickly and get outta the way!

Joanna R.

Yelp
Yep! As good as everyone says! Tried a few flavors and loved them all. The speciality sesame one was really interesting. Lots of sorbet and fruit flavors.

Paula W.

Yelp
It was suggested to my best friend and I to visit this place when in Florence. I was NOT disappointed. The best gelato I have ever had! The service was awesome! I can't wait to return to Italy so I can visit here again! Thank you for a wonderful experience!!!

Ramesh D.

Yelp
Nice gleataria in Florence and the best flavor and lord of people and small queue. It's totally worth the wait and price. Located closer to the cathedral and clock tower. We tried the mango flavor and water melon flavor, and both flavors tasted real fruits. There is no seating but easy to get in and get out. Definitely recommend this place , the best

Yelp
A must stop in Florence for Gelato. While there are tons of fake gelato places out there, this is authentic and really great treat if in florence.

Vicki S.

Yelp
There are many, many good places that make gelato in Firenze but this one, this one is a true contender for the top spot. There's a list on the wall of flavors available that day - what's in season or freshly available. The gelato is artisanal and the flavors aren't wild or trendy but I have on special occasion seen some very creative offerings. Once I was lucky enough to stop by when they had made gelatos from sweet wine, chewy, salty cheese and pear. I had a cup with all three and it honestly was the best frozen treat I have ever had. When I am in town I stop by several days a week to see what they have made and sample as needed. It's usually pretty busy, the locals live this place but the line moves fast and the wait is always short. Five stars!

Curt T.

Yelp
The gelato here isn't bad. Not the best in Florence but not bad Service was good as well

Arnold T.

Yelp
First gelateria I found to have cake! You can have gelato and cake on the same cup. We had the coffee crunch plus tiramisu cake and matcha. I like all flavors and I have to say that it's one of the best tasting tiramisu I had. The 1 star deduction was for the price. 6 euros - 3 flavors but the cup is smaller. Also it was a bit too sweet for my delicate taste buds.

Yelp
Stop two, for us, on our gelato tour of Florence involved a stop at Gelateria Perchè No! Why not! Perchè No! regularly appears on "best" gelato in Florence lists. It's one of the oldest shops in town (founded in 1935) and specifically what brought us here was to try their recreation of Buontalenti, the original gelato flavor. Perchè No! won a contest to recreate chef Buontalenti's 1565 recipe and it's been permanently on their menu ever since. So if you're on a gelato tour, and you want something connected to the actual origin of gelato, this is the exact spot for you. The gelato was fantastic. It was a whole other level to taste what the original flavor may have tasted like. They've got dairy free (vegan) flavors if you need them, and a whole bunch of really well done classic gelato flavors to try in a cup or cone. We were super happy to be there and eat this gelato and bummed that the only way to have it again is to travel back to Florence from Los Angeles. (BUT WE'RE WILLING!) Thank you, Perchè No! for the delicious gelato history in our mouths!

Lisa S.

Yelp
We asked our guide for the best Gelato and she directed us to Perche. It did not disappoint. While there were so many beautiful colors and options, I chose my fav which was caffe. It was so good. I noticed others were mixing multiple flavors into one cup. I was kind of wishing I would have tried that and added the caffè mousse. Gives me another reason to head back there. Staff was quick as there was a line out the door. There were some nice planters nearby with benches to sit and people-watch and enjoy the sweet treat. It was fun to see the Yelp sticker on the door!

Yelp
Delicious gelato, great atmosphere, friendly staff. This spot was a great find, my new go to for gelato!

Amanda C.

Yelp
{Overall: 3.5; Gelato: 3.5} Service: 3.5 One of the more popular gelato shops in Florence. All in all, reflecting on all the gelato I had throughout this trip, and in general in life, I wouldn't say this one particularly stood out to me. It was good, but the flavors were definitely more on the mild side. Next time in Florence, I would try a different spot.

Hossein J.

Yelp
Absolutely THE BEST Gelato I have ever had. In the US good ice cream places are rare to find, the biggest issue I have is the level of sweetness, everything in the IS is just TOOO sweet. In Europe things are much less sweet overall but this place is just perfect. The Gelato is made daily fresh, so a lot of the flavors you can't get 2 days in a row. Everything is just delicious and delightful that you can not get enough. When I usually eat ice cream even at other most of the gelato places, I leave feeling heavy and not satisfied, regenerating why I had some and I usually can't finish a small order on my own. I don't have that problem here. After eating my ice cream I leave feeling great and wanting more. 10 out of 5 for Gelato 4 for for service. 4 for location and ambiance If you ever visit Florence this place is must have, you will not regret it.

Joe P.

Yelp
After a heavy dinner at Perseus, mija & ITC still wanted gelato. I wouldn't normally get anything, but it was our last night in Florence. We stopped by Perchè No (Why Not) at the rec of our taxi driver. Its located near Piazza Uffizi, where there is some good sightseeing. I ordered a milk honey and it was very good. The flavors of gelato are so much more intense vs ice cream, and they have less air and fat: Its Healthy! Hahaha There is no where to sit so we just sat in a public area, and enjoyed our treats while people watching on a hot night. The line was long, but it moved quickly. The staff was very friendly, and like most Italians, spoke very good English. If you are near Piazza Uffizi and have a gelato craving, hit up Perché No. It is literally a why not decision.

Yelp
"Be the flame, not the moth." - Casanova It's almost sacrilege to rate iconic Gelateria's in Florence, Italy with anything less than one-hundred. After all, the heavenly modern Gelato was invented, discovered in this great city. Debatable, I know, but the proud Florentines insist that the origins started here! I won't argue with these beautiful people. Gelateria Perchè No! was one of my first bookmarks when I found myself on an Italian train to Florence. When people ask me.. "Eric, why Italy?" My answer is History and Gelato! And Gelateria Perchè No! is the best of both worlds! Family owned and founded in 1939 it is one of the oldest artisanal Gelato shops in the world! The reviews over social media raves about the high quality ingredients and authenticity of this shop. I had to experience this for myself! After settling in my Italian Bed & Breakfast is when I decided to take a stroll to the Duomo. After being amazed by it's incredible beauty is when I decided it was time for some Gelato! For me, it wasn't just a random shop I was looking for, but Gelateria Perchè No! which many consider the best in Italy! It didn't take much effort to get to my destination as it's located just a stones throw from the Duomo. I lucked out with only a couple standing in line. Upon entering the small, yet charming Gelateria is when I was greeted in Italiano. I quickly perused the menu, but instead asked the scooper (probably a family member) what was her favorite (I recall this advice from a reel on my Instagram). Without hesitation she said "Crema & Caffe" on Cone! Si! Si! And Crema & Caffe it is! Cost only 4€ (5€ with tip). Crema & Caffe Gelato firmly in my hand is when I start licking away. For me, I taste Italian Gelato the way Giacomo Casanova showed me. Start with the tip of your tongue, let the Gelato slide to the back of your mouth, pucker your lips and enjoy! Really! :D In the end, I highly recommend Gelateria Perchè No! if you're lucky enough to be in beautiful Florence. Ok, was it the best, ever? I'll first say it was insanely delicious! Incredibly smooth! And of the highest quality! However! However! Hmm as delicious as it was it was not my favorite in Florence, for starters the scoops not as generous as other shops I visited, and the flavor not as intense as the next Gelateria I visited! And my Gelato Italia story continues... Ciao;)

Eryn M.

Yelp
Stopped by for some gelato and really liked all the flavors! Lots to choose from and in a really convenient location. There wasn't too long of a line and we ordered pretty quickly

Owen G.

Yelp
Perchè No! offers some of the best gelato I've ever had. The flavors are fresh, unique, and perfectly balanced. The staff is very friendly and inviting. A must-visit in Florence!

Shannen B.

Yelp
Ordered tiramisu and crema. Love the option to be able to order tiramisu or mousse or even whipped cream with your gelato. Lots of great basic flavors you can't go wrong with! Only 3 euro for this cup size

Audrey S.

Yelp
My favorite gelato shop we went to in the city!!! The strawberry was so fresh and delicious. I miss it so much

Jenny T.

Yelp
Honestly the best gelato I've ever had. I tried Watermelon, Cantaloupe, and Peach. I loved Watermelon and Cantaloupe so much, I even went back for the same flavors later in the day!

Gab G.

Yelp
Great gelato spot. Hazelnut and watermelon flavors were both tasty, though my favorite thing was actually the lemon granita. A small will run you around €3.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
We found this place through a really good food tour. Great quality. I loved pairing my gelato with whipped cream!! The translation is; Gelato, why not?! Si se puede!

Nicolas L.

Yelp
Perche No serves authentic quality gelato. I had the Stracciatella and Amaretto Gelato on a recent visit. The gelato was perfectly milky, creamy, sweet and flavorful. The Stracciatella was filled with crisp chocolate chiips and the Amaretto had a rich almond flavor.

Sophia B.

Yelp
Best gelato we had on our trip to Italy, and there was hardly a line. Gelato had great consistency. Also offered the milk and cherries flavor that my husband loves.

Alisa B.

Yelp
Of all the gelato places I tried in Italy, this was my favorite one. I got the Stracciatella and it had such a beautiful creaminess to it. It wasn't too heavy and it wasn't melting too quick despite the hot weather. It was the perfect way for me to start off my day exploring the city. Be warned, it's tucked away in a narrow alley, so it might be a little hard to find. My friend who studied abroad in Italy took me here and said it's the most underrated place. Not sure how this place has such little hype, but I'm all for it if it means no lines! I'll always think of this place when I think of gelato from Italy.

Juan B.

Yelp
This was rated as the number 1 gelateria place in a few travel blogs and now I know why! Hidden on one of the small offshoot streets in Florence, this small gelateria has one of the creamiest and boldest flavors I've ever had. My absolute favorites were the sesame and the crema with mascarpone cheese. This is an absolute must visit place if you're doing a gelato taste tour around Firenze/Florence!

Julie C.

Yelp
This is the best place for Italian gelato!! The gelato is made fresh every day with no preservatives, colorings or additives, just simple ingredients like milk, cream, sugar and eggs. It was so good we went there two days in a row!! Lol!! The first day I had chocolate, the second day I had the coffee and hazelnut gelatos. There is always a line, but it moves quickly. The prices here are extremely reasonable unlike other gelato shops. Small cone or a cup is €2.5. Other places a small is €8. I highly recommend! Your stomach will thank me. :)

Laura H.

Yelp
My daughter and I tried several different gelaterias and this was the best. I was hoping for more unique flavors, but it was off-season. I had the honey sesame, which was delicious, and the coffee crunch, which I didn't care for (the "crunch" is chopped coffee beans. Definitely worth getting artisanal gelato rather than the tourist junk sold on the main strip!

john v.

Yelp
Definitely a must taste when in Florence , loved the name and of course the gelato was quite savory

cindy s.

Yelp
Came here after reading reviews and numerous other recommendations. Just OK. If you want the best go to Vivoli.

Brian T.

Yelp
I come fom the States and this was the first Gelato place I stopped by after arriving in Florence. The Gelato here was very soft and full of flavor. The softness was just perfect, it was made to melt in your mouth after one chew, but at the same time it's not runny like yogurt. The portions they give are generous as well. I got thier small cone which still consisteed of 2 large scoops of ice cream. I could choose any 2 flavors from their large selection of flavors. I enjoyed this delicious dessert after a long days walk so it defintely helped end my day just right. There are gelato shops in almost every corner in Florence but I hear this is one of the better ones around the area. The only minor inconvenience of this place was that the ice cream was so stacked and soft that it started dripping all over my hands after a few bites. But thats hardly anything to complain about when you got that sweet sweet gelato!

Katherine F.

Yelp
In a sea of second rate ice cream ... this was The Best gelato in Florence! Close to our hotel and the Carousel. DGD the Younger and I fell in love with Crunchy Coffee... Very hard making a once-a-day event! So yummy!

Shelley C.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the gelato here! The ladies working behind the counter wear white lab coats which is fun too. Although they are not the friendliest, which is fine. I did see them help a Japanese man with flavor recommendations which was nice! I got the coffee and milk with honey and sesame. The coffee was great and the milk with honey and sesame seeds was amazing! The sesame seeds added a nice little crunch and overall tasted like a Chinese rice cake. Loved it.

Stefanie C.

Yelp
I'm not much of a gelato connoisseur, but my husband said this is the best gelateria in Florence. We went here twice in five days on our honeymoon, among other gelaterias (is that a word?) and it was perfectly refreshing both during the day and at night. I tried the mint chocolate flavor and later the coffee gelato. Both were creamy and light. Apparently that's what differentiates gelaterias from one another. Anyways Perchè No is also open late at night for all your sweet tooth cravings. Service is fast and friendly. Not really sure how to compare gelaterias in Florence, but I'm partially writing this review so I remember I came here in the future. For those reading, this was a worthwhile destination, so come check it out if the line isn't too long.

A M.

Yelp
Surprised at the 4.5 stars. It's ok, but in my experience, there's basically no gelato in Italy that's not at least ok. We had gelato from here our first night in Florence and it was too icy and nowhere near how I remembered Italian gelato. It had been five years since my last trip to Italy, so for a minute I worried maybe I had hyped Italian gelato up too much in mind, but the next day we went to Gelateria dei Neri, and I realized that, no, I was not overhyping it at all and gelato in Italy was exactly as good I remembered.

Karen D.

Yelp
Great gelato spot in the heart of Florence! Check their facebook page, as they have erratic hours (hence the 4 stars). I tried the lavender and chocolate with orange and rum flavors here, in a cone. Good service and great gelato! It gets packed here, but the line moves fast.

A R.

Yelp
Good gelato and gluten-free cones. Recommend!!! Standard flavors plus some innovative ones. Closes early.

Isabella B.

Yelp
Literally "why not?". Florence, being the town of at least 3 tower climbs, justified my step count behind my philosophy of eating whatever I wanted in the city. This translated to at least a serving of gelato for every tower conquered. This was the second gelato I had in Florence. Their focus is on "il gelato artigianale" (natural gelato) and passes all the requirements for serving up high quality product (seasonal flavors, no artificial colors/flavors, proper storage conditions for gelato). According to gelato lore, having been established since 1939 they created the semifreddi (whipped cream but somewhat more dense) and was the first gelateria to showcase their flavors inside a glass case. I had a cone of their pistachio and hazelnut. While it wasn't "knock-my-socks-out" delicious, it was a solidly smooth and creamy gelato that appeased my sweet tooth after a long day of walking. My sole regret was that I got a boring flavor and I would've done better had I gone for a more unique flavor such as "honey and sesame". Guess I have to make a return trip to Florence again should I want to try more flavors...

Christy S.

Yelp
This Gelateria was recommended to me by a local, and I was not disappointed! It is a small shop, and I'm not sure I would have stopped at this one since there are so many gelato shops around. What drew me to this one was the fact that they actually make their own gelato in-house. I tried the lemon gelato and the raspberry. Both were fruity, smooth, and delicious! I really got the taste of real fruit as opposed to just a lemon or raspberry flavor. I highly recommend giving this place a try if you are in Florence.

Eliza N.

Yelp
My family were tourists staying in Florence, and we got gelato here everyday of our visit! The gelato is amazing, best I've ever had. I would definitely recommend!

Maggie N.

Yelp
This is the best ice cream I have had so far in Italy. What monsters gave fewer than 5 stars? It is so so so good. It's worth flying here just to eat it.

Clarice H.

Yelp
I really liked Perchè No! It is on the main road but hidden on the side edge so that it's not too crowded. Once again, all of the tell tale factors of a good gelateria were present here, so I went ahead and ordered. I got the second smallest size with two flavors-matcha and yogurt. I love that they have matcha, becasue it's one of my FAVORITE flavors ever and it's pretty uncommon in gelaterias in Italy/Europe. And better yet, it tasted awesome! Very umami like matcha should be and not too sweet. The yogurt was refreshing as well. Though they piled on less than some others and the prices were a bit higher, I thoroughly enjoyed coming here because of the lowkey vibe and the kind service offered by the owner, who stands behind the counter and scoops gelato just like his employees (who are his family members by the way!).

Kip P.

Yelp
Specifically walked to this place because I saw it listed in a couple of lists for best gelato. Small little shop but super friendly and attentive staff. My favorite was probably the hazelnut but the pistachio was really good too. The coffee crunch was super good too, so many good choices. I don't know if it's the best because I haven't had much to base it off of but man the bar is set high now.

Helen Y.

Yelp
Cute gelato shops that makes gelato in house fresh everyday along with other italian pastries. Food/Drink: We came here after reading about it in various articles on the best gelato shops to visit in Florence and we weren't disappointed! Although the gelato flavors seem pretty classic to me (nothing too inventive) they were definitely fresh and you can taste the quality in something as simple as the pistachio. My partner also got a granite which is basically like a slushie in the coffee flavor and the coffee flavor was really strong! Price: It's like most gelato shops around the area and priced at 2.50 euros for a small and the granite was 3 euros for a small. Atmosphere: Very casual atmosphere, I liked how there are benches inside for you to sit (not as a big group though) as well as a little terrace area outside with a bench on it as well. The shop itself is tiny though so certainly expect a cue if a lot of people go at once. Tips: would recommend trying the sorbet flavors on a hot day, especially the lime!!

Amy K.

Yelp
The BEST gelato place we went to in all of Italy, by far. The overall service that we received from the staff here sets it apart from the rest. Mariangeles (Mari, for short) was the kindest person who has ever served us gelato. We had already made our choices, but she gave us a sample of their pistachio which is made from a very special pistachio. It. Was. Amazing!!! Of ALL the times I don't get pistachio (I got it literally every single time except here). She was nice enough to give me half of a scoop for free, since I was so sad lmao. When we were almost done with our gelatos, she came over with samples of their hazelnut as well. Wow!! We ended up getting another cup to go, cuz their pistachio was literally the BEST I've had in all the gelaterias in Italy so far (and I've almost always gotten pistachio at all the gelaterias). We paired it with Mandarin which was SO light and refreshing. Mari said it was literally the Mandarin oranges and water, and we totally believe her cuz the flavor was so strong. You MUST come here!

Thomas M.

Yelp
Sub-par gelato, didn't taste fresh and the flavor was flat compared to other gelato I've had in Italy. Take the walk to sbrino if you want outstanding gelato.
