Google
Coming from New York, and being a child of the vinyl age I was transported!!! There's no shortage of record stores or thriftspaces to find black gold in NY. PEOPLES RECORDS The pleasure was mine watching my daughter picking vinyl and vibing with the OG's in the store. The owner is silent but filled with knowledge and the in store dj's are silky smooth playing unique sounds, and they also have a motown "girl" on staff. Be ready to spend some time when you visit this Detroit gem 😎

Google
I came to People’s Records for a rare find, and staff here went through great lengths to help me find it. They also gave some great local recommendations for coffee and street art. The selection of 45s here is unmatched, and the digging here is truly endless, you’re sure to find gems. I’ll definitely be back when I’m in Detroit!

Google
Down to earth record shop with an amazing selection and at amazing prices... We bought a variety of Blues, Funk, Soul, Rockabilly, and even some Electronic. If you're into vinyl, this is a must stop spot! Don't think twice, just go... You won't be disappointed.

Umberto R

Google
Peoples has an enormous selection at great prices. I'm a 45 head so it's literally 45 heaven. They have big selection of dollar bin and all genres. They also have a listening station .best value for vinyl in Detroit

Amanda Brown

Google
This place was Awesome! I could be in here all day. Stopped in for my first visit on my birthday. So many records, all organized and the prices were great! I bought a stack of my collection. Bonus: There is a coffee shop next door, so you literally could be there all day!

Cornelius Rice

Google
I've been shopping at people's records since 2003, back when they were located in the basement of the forest arms apartments. They have a great selection of albums, 12 inch singles, and 45, as well as used 8-tracks and cassettes.

Corbin Palmer

Google
Really cool shop. Amazing selections, could be in there for hours looking through all the different options.

J Charles

Google
No matter what style or era of music you're looking for, they've got it. The bins are stuffed with a great selection at excellent prices. Lots of obscure stuff, not just the same old same old. Definitely worth the trip.

Paul H.

Yelp
Peoples is an institution from what I understand in Detroit and has a good mix of all the major music genres along with a section of dance and electronic based music. I would say it's about 95% used from what I saw and the largest selection of 45s that I've ever seen. There were two turntables available to checkout records already open/unsealed which was nice. You could easily spend a few hours here as I did. I walked away with an Amp Fiddler and Will Sessions album that I had been looking for so all the digging and listening worked out in my favor. Prices here are very reasonable and the store personnel are super nice. There are some. I've murals on the buildings just across the street so be sure to check them out. Glad I got the opportunity to stop by on this trip to "The D".

Jeff B.

Yelp
One of the best record stores on the planet!!! Well organized, decently priced, knowledgeable staff, incredible selection. Go next door for coffee and incredible pastries and maybe even a performance! One of my favorites in the country...

Shante A.

Yelp
After experiencing my first record store two weeks ago, I was excited to visit People's Records, in Detroit. I also realized how insane it is to find the 5th Dimensions of vinyl. However, I am thankful People's Records had one in their new arrivals collection -- for $2. Wow! They also suggested another artist group but, I my heart is sold out on The 5th Dimensions. The guys who works here know their records and is quick to help you find what you are looking for. I must say it seems as if they have their store organized as much as possible and MASKS ARE REQUIRED. LOL!

Jason S.

Yelp
People's knows their stuff. A good spot for collecting soul and funk. Jazz selection is good and prices are good. I was happy to find some reggae other than the usual selections. I'd like to visit more often.

Deanna B.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I didn't anticipate how great this store would be, knowing Motown was made in Detroit... but alas, I was pleasantly surprised! This record store has a huge selection of Motown, funk, and soul music. All the records were affordable (like I think the most expensive one was $8), and were in good condition. There's a huge 45 section in the back corner as well. Now a big heads up, this place didn't have a ton of NEW artist, or records. This definitely was a more of an "I've been looking for an old school record from the 70s" versus "Man I'm looking for an artist from the Millennium" type of place. Also a thing to note--- is that masks are required. This was one of my favorite record stores I've been too. If you are into old school music, this is the spot for you. You'll find some great stuff, at affordable prices.

James M.

Yelp
Haven't been to a shop this well stocked in decades. Lots of variety of the stuff collectors want and at decent prices. No to mention the walls are covered in original posters and pictures of all the Soul and Jazz greats.

Jerry C.

Yelp
Excellent experience all around. Will definitely continue to do business with these guys

Jessica V.

Yelp
This review is for a visit pre-covid. We LOVE record stores. Top on our list of things that rank a record store high are diversity of selection, range of prices, bargain bin, and the most important: friendly and knowledgeable staff. This store is located near Eastern Market, so if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. The aisles were a bit narrow for my wheelchair scooter, but it worked. You head in and are COMPLETELY blown away by the offerings! There are two main rooms: a front room (bargains to the left) with the cash register, and then the back room with a listening area and the bulk of the vinyl. We bought WAY too many records, which I note was caused by two things: selection (!!!!) and the extremely interesting woman that helped us. She found records we were searching for, some we didn't know we needed, and gave us tips on other vinyl on our list, and added TO our list. THIS? She is the hallmark of a great store, and the main reason we'll be back!

Quintin S.

Yelp
Nice spot for records, they accept PayPal which is nice, also their new arrivals section is great.

Sarah B.

Yelp
I'll just start by saying that I only had time for one record store stop when I was in Detroit, and I couldn't be happier that I chose Peoples Records for that stop. The basics: * Ample street parking, although it is metered * Mask policy is actively enforced * Employees are knowledgeable and helpful, but don't linger over your shoulder unless you ask for assistance (love this) * Huge selection of Motown records, this is to be expected in Detroit but if you're looking for them in particular as I was, this store is a great place to go * Very chill vibe, the employees were spinning some great vinyls while I was there * Did I mention a very good selection? I would have come home with way more than 5 if I wasn't out of room in my suitcase for the next day. Bonus? Very cute paper bags, which I definitely plan to keep

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Be careful where you park. The city of Detroit welcoming committee left me a $45 parking ticket while parked out front on the street.

Joe P.

Yelp
cool store, friendly staff and I found some things and picked them up. Decent prices overall. My only gripe is there good stuff is not in the store but on discogs.

a.d. r.

Yelp
my teenager and i decided to buy some real vinyl, and we like this area so we checked them out. they had most of our favorites artists (and even a book by Aunt Alice, who's also a grammy winner!). i just wish they weren't so far away from where we live!

Daria D.

Yelp
Love coming down here for some new sound experiences that can really set my mind on a new path of thought and engagement with the world around me.

Doug C.

Yelp
One of the great record stores of Detroit and Michigan. Particularly for used soul/jazz/hip hop and techno vinyl. Also great selection of rock and indie vinyl. Primarily all used though they also stock new vinyl releases by local artists. Also they have a good art/music book selection and an insane 45 section.

Charles S.

Yelp
Very knowledgeable staff that offer fair prices on used vinyl. You can easily spend a couple of hours here. I came across a few gems to add to the collection.

Alex R.

Yelp
After a day of jury duty in downtown Detroit I saw People's Records on my way back home. I have to hit up any record store with vinyl I come across. This is an amazing shop. The owner is super laid back and always up to taking music with anyone who comes in the door. He also will work with you and give you a good deal. The other employees are helpful and easy to talk too. They have a great selection of vinyl, and specialize in jazz and soul music. But they have a big selection of other genres of music. They have a cool selection of dance music too and good selection on 12" singles. This is a place to just dig through stacks of records. It is a good old school record shop. I can spend a lot of time digging good through the stacks. I recommend this place to any one who is a vinyl collector. I have been there two more times and each time coming home with some cool records

Joy M.

Yelp
Legit. Staff is informative, helpful & friendly. The vast array of merchandise is organized in a fun & creative manner. They have sweet record players with speakers set up and ready to purchase out the door! Two thumbs up.

Mark F.

Yelp
What an easy place to kill a lot of time sorting and sifting through years of albums. The selection was pretty expansive to the past (I didn't see a ton of recent stuff). The staff was really friendly and kept a steady stream of browse-worthy jams playing in the background. As an added bonus (though I probably wasn't supposed to), the store's dog was incredibly friendly and fun to pet! :)

Anthonie J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, wonderful selections and can't beat the prices. Found everything i was looking for and then some. The vibe throughout the whole store was very welcoming, when in Detroit must stop in and cruze thru their extensive music collection of vinyl, cd, and much more.

Neal R.

Yelp
I love this store. Great prices good vibes, good people.

Sara G.

Yelp
What Detroit needs, besides a never-ending spate of responsible leadership, is more records stores like this one. My feet led me from an empty street into a room stuffed with music. Love when that happens! I stood still for a minute or so, flanked by boxes and boxes of vinyl records, getting my bearings as I inhaled that sweet sweet old-record sleeve smell. And what of the flanks? Lots of LPs, TONS of 45s, all genres. I have never seen so many 45s! Soul, jazz, R&B, rock. Dollah bins with Patsy Cline and other jewels (if you're a DJ like me). Plus, the boxes are quite attractive in their own right, each boasting a colorful and eclectic paint job that identifies what treasures lie within. For crate diggers, this place is a joy. Particularly if soul is your thing. Brad (the owner) is a cool guy whose knowledge of soul music is prodigious. ...and here is where I admit my weakness for in-store pooches. Sigh. This one was friendly and non-intrusive. It was hard deciding whether to continue petting her or dive into the free jazz section (it only took a minute or so before I predictably dove). I really hope more shops like People's sprout up amongst the scattered empty lots that are all too numerous in Detroit.

Morgan G.

Yelp
This is the best record store in Detroit, brad is a great guy who not only gives the customer a great deal, but also is completely honest and very genorous with those who come in to sell their records to him. This isn't something you see very often in most record stores, especially when there are records worth hundreds or thousands of dollars involved... most buyers will give someone who doesn't know the value of their rare records next to nothing and then sell it on eBay. Everytime I am in detroit I come to people's right away and never come out empty handed.

Alice M.

Yelp
When you first walk in the store, they have 1 main room with racks & racks of 45s in these separate white shoe boxes with different titles like "Pop/Vocal, Doo Wop, Garage, Punk, Indie Rock"). They have a very nice jazz section, but don't forget to look around your feet because there's more vinyl down there too. They have an entire wall with Motown 45s, too. Then, there's the upstairs portion of the store where you have 3 separate rooms full of vinyl (1 room is huge, the other 2 are like the size small bedrooms). The 1 huge room is loaded with stuff that isn't sorted much, but from my inspection of it today, looks like it's mostly early dance music and r&b. Only go in that room if you have a whole hour to spend looking. The other 2 rooms are sorted much better and in 1 of them you'll find a cool section of psych rock & punk. It's small, but it's really cool stuff in that room! Overall, I would recommend only going to People's if you're looking for Motown, jazz, and obscure punk music. If I was in the mood for punk right now, then I would've bought the whole crate (full of bands that I haven't heard of). Personally, I won't be going to People's very often because their selections are very limited. I found a lot of Chicago, Bee Gee's and jazz LPs, but I couldn't find the stuff I wanted like Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath, or even The Doors. *FYI, they only have a few new LPs. This isn't a negative to me, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Matthew D.

Yelp
Full disclosure: High Fidelity is my favorite movie of all time. Today, at People's Records, I just had a real life High Fidelity experience (minus Jack Black, maybe next time). After getting buzzed in, I had a great conversation with the two guys working there that ranged from the local real estate, bars to hit and of course music. After reviewing some likes and dislikes, they took me upstairs where the records over $10 are (this used record store is a total steal, amazing stuff). I walked out with four Beatles albums to add to my slowly growing collection. Now they focus mainly on the local oldies, lots of jazz, blues, soul, etc. with an emphasis on 45s, so when classic rock comes in it moves pretty quick, but they always are getting more in. To Recap: The Good: Take the earphones off and go retro. Dust off the record player, sit in your dad's old lazy boy, smack your girl's rump as she walks by and jam out to some classic vinyl. There I just saved you $150 in therapist fees. You're welcome. The Bad: Great local selection, I would love more rock, but the dude abides. The Band This Store Most Resembles: Echo & The Bunnymen. It is perverse not to own some of this stuff. Get out there and enjoy it!

David F.

Yelp
I don't even know where to start with the compliments. I am pleased, excited, and proud to call People's Records my favorite record store in the United States. And after four years, and eight migrations from the Southwest back to the Midwest, I have seen a lot the United States has to offer for 45's (most of it involves every bad record by Lionel Ritchie). All of it pales in comparison to Brad and Andy's generosity, patience and talent in the identification of classic and rare 45's. Especially in a day where a small number of people that are actually collecting 45's in the states. People's Records loyalty to Detroit and to their customers is honorable. I have picked up many records from People's that I have spent years searching for (mostly Jazz and Soul). Now, of course there are a lot of records in this small business. And they are not entirely sorted...but do yourself a favor and offer a hand to go through the records. Grab a pile or two! There might be some gems in there. I guarantee you will get a screaming deal on some very hard to find records! With that, if you have not checked out Peoples. Do it. Brad and Andy have always been accommodating and easy to talk to. If you come in with a great unpretentious attitude, you can expect the same in return. This is one of the few record stores left, where the owner actually cares about his store and his clients. Thank you Peoples for providing me with wonderful records for the last four years. Haters get to steppin'

Christopher S.

Yelp
UPDATED REVIEW: I will admit, that I was a bit harsh on People's in my original review and after a few more visits, my opinion has changed. I have, in the last three of seven visits, bought quite a few records from People's...maybe I caught the store on a bad week originally. The selection has become increasingly better with every visit to the store. On my last visit I purchased "Spillane" by John Zorn in perfect condition, probably only played once. Brad, keep-up the good work and keep buying. You have definitely created a very nice store in the new location and I am happy to be a customer...and find me some Art Ensemble of Chicago records!!! OLD REVIEW BELOW: (2 Star Rating) One of the more disappointing stores that I have visited in the area, People's Records has been hyped and over-hyped to death. Though they have a decent sized jazz section, it boasts little variety and caters mainly to bop, straight ahead and big band. Having heard that it was such an amazing store by so many people, this was a pretty big letdown. Not even an Anthony Braxton ECM standards record...sad. The classical section was pretty much garbage. Don't waste your time. If you are looking for soul, gospel, R&B and rock; you will not be disappointed. They have quite a selection and there are many unsorted boxes to dig through. I'll probably visit this store if I am in the area and have nothing else to do, but I would not go out of my way to visit.

Ko M.

Yelp
So if you're trying to find new records or records that are ultra popular, People's is not the place for you. If you are a music fan, looking for great records that few people have even heard, this is the place to go! The owner, Brad Hales is so knowledgeable and friendly! You'll never know who you might run into at People's, many DJs (local, national and international) come here to comb through the store. Prices are good, especially if you're buying lots of records. I love people's, it's almost a museum of music that people should hear with a focus on Detroit 45s.

Rojin J.

Yelp
Been collecting some records in the dream of mixing them someday, the day has yet to come but this place has always been there for me. Could literally spend hours here. Also got a 15 dollar discount without even asking for it.

Sara A.

Yelp
If you heart some vinyl like I do than People Record's is your joint. Newly located on Woodward after the Forest Arms Apartment Building fire People's is back in action and I am beaming with excitement and glowing with happiness. Owned by DJ extraordinaire Brad Hales People's isDetroit's best record store by far. Why you ask? Well, Hales is always kind, helpful and freakishly knowledgeable about music and vinyl. What I love about People's is that they will always find you a gem that you never knew existed making you're record collection radder and you a bit happier. The albums at People's are well organized and reasonably priced. They carry jazz. R&B, soul and more. But instead of me telling you about the fantastic rows and rows of wax, just go there yourself. NOW!!

Eric K.

Yelp
People's records is a great little place that will not bust the wallet. You have to press a buzzer to let you in. Has a good selection of music. Great jazz and r & b.

Aaron M.

Yelp
Picking one record store in Detroit would be really tough, but most of the time I have to do just that (unless I'm planning to spend an entire day driving all over the place). People's is a GREAT shop, and it is as central as it gets re: record stores. If you are looking for a good place to make your first foray into the 313 record shop world, this is a solid starting point. Staff are extremely nice and tend to give you a deal if you are buying multiple things. Nice dollar bins, organized by style (including 80s and punk).

Leigh A.

Yelp
Peoples is located near the eastern market. This place is a treasure trove of assorted vinyl. They didn't have any tshirts or trinkets to purchase. This is vinyl and gear mostly. We were looking for some Motown to add to our collection. They had a large selection of Motown and a lot of jazz too. I found some great stuff in the 99 cent bins. You will need to do lots of digging to find the good stuff. Always check the condition of the records before purchase. They provide record players so you can test them. But, the $1 records are not allowed to be played at all. So you take your chances with the cheap records. They do have other genres of music, but they are more sparse. I would have given five stars, but I was put off by one of the employees. I had a huge stack of records and they were getting in the way (and heavy). I asked if there was somewhere I could set them down so I could continue to look. He sighed and said normally you hold onto your records but you can put them here, as he pointed to a record player on the counter. I almost walked out because that's pretty sh*tty. Anyway, this place redeemed itself in the end. We had $55 worth it records picked out and he let us have them for $45 cash.

John S.

Yelp
The store doesn't have the same space, flow or easily searchable dollar bins that it had at their previous location, but Peoples has lost none of it's killer selection of jazz and soul vinyl. That's thanks to Brad and the rest of the crew who keep the everyday junk out of their bins. They list some of the rarer vinyl on Discogs and eBay like most of the other record stores, but, unlike Record Graveyard, that stuff is still on the shelf, so you still have a chance to snag it if you walk in. The staff is pretty much hands off unless you ask for help, but they're super nice and really know their stuff. Plus, they have been known to give a deal if you're buying a stack of records. Not a huge selection of rock, but if you're into jazz and soul (which you better be if you're from Detroit), Peoples really gets it done.

Matt Y.

Yelp
This record store is really a glorified curated record section of a thrift store. You'll likely find LPs you're looking for but in absolutely terrible condition. I'm sure a primary resource for them are local drunks and addicts coming in with whatever vinyl they may have acquired (by whatever means). The taciturn clerk on duty when I went didn't help with my impression of the place. Seriously, is there a for-profit school somewhere that trains these people in the art of being both condescending and listless at the same time?

Blair W.

Yelp
EVERY birthday/holiday/random day I need a gift for a friend this is my GO-TO spot! Brilliant staff, great selections and a genuinely rad environment. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING PEOPLE'S!

Mike S.

Yelp
I am brand new to Michigan and since my move in January, I've been trying to find a record shop with great selection and minimal douchebag owners. Ladies and gentleman, People's is hands down one of the best record shops I have been to period. It almost surpasses my favorites back home that became weekly haunts. Let me break it down for you. SELECTION They have everything. Jazz, Rock, Blues, Soul, Country, whatever suits your mood. I collect 45s mostly, and I found a lot of great singles at an even better price. They literally have boxes and boxes of 45s lining the walls over the LP bins. At least 20 boxes of just motown, another 20 of classic soul, and an entire wall of early rock and roll. STAFF The guys I met (I shopped on a Saturday morning) were the opposite of every record shop employee I have ever come across. They were friendly, knowledgeable, not hung over/reeking of booze, and playing great music on the hi fi. What really impressed me, was when I asked a question about Little Walter, I got an answer about Little Walter, not 20 random trivia points about the blues to prove how much more they knew than me. I love early rock and roll and 60s rock, so a lot of times, when I bring my Beach Boys/Beatles/whatever else mainstream music I like to the counter at other places, the douchers behind the counter scoff. But here, they don't care, they just seem happy to see people enjoying vinyl still, and that's what a record store should be. Not some "look how cool I am, I bought this record to show my friends and never actually play it" place, but a hangout to chat about what you love. and I love vinyl damnit. PRICES Great! Not only did I get quality, original releases of some fine records, I also got them for no less than a couple bucks, most for .50 cents a pop. Also, since I bought a stack of them, the guy at the counter took five bucks off the total. Even though I unsuccessfully haggled for a few original Little Richard 45s, the discount for buying in bulk totally made up for it. People's, I want to thank you for doing what you do. Even though I live over an hour away, I plan to make regular trips to your store, just because you know how to take care of customers. Keep on doin' what you're doin' Oh, and P.S. thanks for having an awesome dog in the store. It kept my girlfriend occupied so I could get at least another ten minutes of digging under my belt.

Morgan D.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! So many incredible records I never knew existed. The folks who work here really know their stuff, and they are so friendly. People's and Hello Records: http://www.yelp.com/biz/hello-records-detroit are the must-go to record stores in Detroit for every DJ or musician I know who visits Detroit. I've never been here without picking up something amazing! I've found some unbelievable gems among the 45s and 78s. Can't wait to go back soon. And the Hermon Weems signs? Beautiful!

Athena K.

Yelp
wow, this place is getting five stars from everyone, I hate to be a downer but.... their prices are just so freaking high. I bought a record here for nearly 20 bucks that was on ebay for a penny plus 3.99 S&H a week later. And maybe I'm just not hipster enough to shop here but always ignore me when I come in. I guess really, when it comes down to it, if you like music you could easily buy anything you'd get here off of ebay for a bit a less.

Mitch J.

Yelp
This is by far the best record store I have ever walked into. Their selection in all genres is impeccable, particularly in Rock N Roll, Soul, and Jazz. Coming from Toronto, I'm used to seeing unreasonably high prices for vinyl. Not so here, I found some timeless classics for under 10$. Their bargain bins are astonishing, and as a Jazz fan who knows how hard it is to find quality jazz at low prices, I was floored to find albums by the liked of Lester Young, Stan Getz, and Oscar Peterson for 94 cents a piece. Owner was friendly and informative. Without a doubt coming back next time I'm in Detroit !

Laura W.

Yelp
People's is a first class record store. Used vinyl treasures (both LPs and 45s) cover virtually all available space with hand painted, colorful signs directing you to different genres and subgenres all around the store... Depending on your level of vinyl adoration, be prepared to browse for hours. They lean more toward jazz, old Motown and soul, but across the board they have their genres covered. I have found several gems here, and love being able to shop for records right on Woodward in Detroit. The staff is super and they obviously love music. I mean, LOVE it. Which is exactly what you want when you go to such a place. Prices are reasonable and everything I've picked up has been in great shape as they obviously take a lot of care when it comes to buying used stock from those looking to sell their collections

Prashant V.

Yelp
One of the best record stores in the midwest. Period.

Oliver J.

Yelp
The majority of the records at this store are common records you would see at any record store in the city. The only good thing about this store is the 45 selection which is extensive. The lighting is poor so I would advise taking records by the window and looking at them or test playing them before buying. But before test playing them, ask an employee for a microfiber cloth to clean the record. A G+ sounding record after a good cleaning suddenly sounds like a VG+ record.

Jane S.

Yelp
Really enjoy this record store. I find their selection unique compared to a lot of other stores. This is a store for folks looking for older records, if you're looking for something Urban Outfitters would carry, this is not your place. If you're looking for jazz/blues/gospel and the like, make sure you stop by. Have found some great gems while digging around here.

Robbie L.

Yelp
People's Records is one of the best record shops I've ever visited. The selection, quality, and prices are unparalleled. I think the best thing about the store, however, is owner Brad Hales' extreme honesty, friendliness and amazing recommendations. Peoples is a great spot to browse, look for records, or to learn about new music. This spot is truly a gem.

Jason D.

Yelp
These guys are really nice and they have a good selection of dance and disco. I found about 8-10 records last week. The only problem is their bins are getting too full of records a little overpriced. Hence their sale, but they need to advertise in the windows they're having a sale. 50% off would move a lot of stock out. And a once over with the vacuum/duster would help. I hope they stay in business, I'll visit them if I'm ever back in Detroit.

Joe B.

Yelp
People's is an alright record store, but its not my favorite. It's a great location, but the space is very small and can get crowded with as little as two or three other people inside. I just started collecting vinyl not too long ago, and I'm more interested in LPs than 45s. If you're into 45s, then this place is probably a gold mine. No other record store in the area even comes close to the amount of 45's this place has. As far as LPs go, their R&B/Soul and jazz selections are decent sized, but the rock and other selections are fairly underwhelming. What I like is that their prices are pretty fair on a lot of stuff, and I can usually get a good stack of records for fairly cheap. The staff there is also really friendly and if you buy a bunch of records, they will usually round the price down and give you a little bit of a deal. What I don't like, and others have mentioned this in their reviews, is that anything of decent value that comes it goes directly online. I've heard one of the guys say this to a customer who was asking for James Brown LPs. They have LPs from some of the more popular artists, but its usually not the albums you are looking for. I understand that the whole point of the business is to make money, but it takes away from the experience of going to a record store vs. going online if a lot of the really good records are never even made available in the store. Still, I've found some great stuff in the under $5 range. Most of the records are around that price, but I've seen some garbage quality stuff marked for $10+ just because its a popular group or album. I don't mind paying a decent amount for a good record, but not for a good record in poor quality. My word of advise would be if you find something you really want, make sure you inspect it well and listen to it on their turntable in the store before you buy it. Its great that they let you do this, as some shops don't have that available. I've probably picked up close to a dozen LP's in the two times I've been to People's and the majority of them have been fine, but I've had a couple that I blindly bought and once I listened to them at home and heard how awful and crackly they sounded, I really regretted not giving them a preview before paying for them.

Yelp
This place is amazing (specifically the new location). Tons of cool Detroit 45s of all genres, great collectible jazz at reasonable prices, and the most badass collection of 78s I've ever seen. Seriously, they have a stack of Blue Note 78s from Miles, Monk, Bud Powell... just awesome. Also saw a copy of Bud Powell on Roost in V+ condition... didn't ask the price because I did't want to be tempted.

Yelp
How wild you are about this store depends on how into 45s you are, particularly rare 45s. If you're looking for LPs, look elsewhere. On a recent visit it was a struggle for me to come up with a handful of records I could buy. People's is heavy on 60s and 70s R&B and Jazz, which I like, but many times when I could find an LP I liked in the racks, I'd have to put it back due to condition issues. Lots of badly scratched records, records with evidence of water damage, pretty beat looking records in general. I suppose some folks are okay with that, but I'm not, and I don't have to settle for it with used vinyl. Shopping here, it is also pretty clear that a lot of stuff just goes to eBay or Discogs. I actually heard the clerks talking about that too, so I'm not pulling this out of thin air. I'm sure many of the more desirable records, or anything that would sell for more than $10 gets sold online. When record stores do this, there really isn't any reason to me stopping in, because all the good stuff has been cherry picked out of the racks. I understand the store has a second location in Detroit that may be a different experience altogether, but shopping here didn't really make me want to go through the trouble of checking it out. For R&B and jazz vinyl, I'll just stick to Street Corner in Oak Park.
