"Follow the Smell of Warm Chocolate Croissants This historic pastry shop was founded in 1868 as an aristocratic teahouse, one of the few public places where women could go without the company of men. Inside is a room that serves as a restaurant, but this shop is more known for its delicious croissants. You will notice the smell of warm chocolate croissants, made from a secret recipe. (There are other filling choices, too.)"

While inexperienced tourists may be seduced by the Brasileira next door and its Instagrammable appeal, they would be missing out on the jewel next door. Where else in Lisbon can you ask for a croissant au chocolat and be served a sliced croissant that was freshly filled with the patisserie’s own chocolate fondue? Well, they also serve lunches and their dining room is a time capsule you can't miss! Bring a friend but tell no one 🤫

Wonderful cafe/bistro with ample outside dining space. Food including pastries, empanadas, are all very good. Inside restaurant is very well done and comfortable. Great location to have a cafe and bakery foods.

Coming from a family of French bakers and canners, Elie Benard settled in Lisbon - now found this place as Croissants in Google. We had a cup of coffee and a red wine.

A cute pastelaria located in Baixa / Chiado. They have a massive selection of pastries, including, of course, the legendary pastei de nata. It's a pretty classic cafe, with both a nice counter for a quick bite, small outdoor seating area, and takeaway option. I stopped by shortly after my flight landed in Lisbon, and it was a great introduction to Portuguese pastries. My friend and I decided to split a mini quiche and pastel de nata (in an effort to be ~somewhat~ healthy). The mini quiche was solid, with a decent texture and a nice little crust on the outside; it was a lovely and much-needed savory bite before a long day of sweets. The pastel de nata was also good, with a nice creamy, custardy interior and flaky shell. It trended a bit too sweet, and the outer shell wasn't quite as flaky or crispy as I would have liked. However, it had been sitting out for a while, so it's possible that we just missed the optimal timing for peak freshness. It was also a smidge touristy and overpriced, which, I suppose is to be expected for much of the Baixa / Chiado neighborhood, especially anything close to major tourist attractions like the Bertrand Bookstore. All in all, Benard is a great spot for a quick bite, but if you specifically want an amazing pastei de nata, there are plenty of other shops that specialize in the pastry and can give you one far more worth your euro.

Love the old time classic cafe! We went to Bernard for coffee 3 times during our 5 days trip in Lisbon! It’s a very old, classic style cafe in the heart of Chiado. We opted to sit outside to watch people and look at the old bookstores next to the cafe. It’s very busy but at the same time relaxing! Great coffee and pastries!

Antonia is an excellent server. He works very hard to insure the guests needs are met. Antonia was the only server on the patio and was quite busy. Even though it was stressful, he maintained his composure and provided great service. The burger bun was probably the best I’ve had. Not a type I’ve seen back home in the USA. Love this place.
