The 10 Best Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal to Book Right Now - AFAR

"Set in an 18th-century palace on Rua das Janelas Verdes opposite the National Museum of Ancient Art, this small property preserves historic character without feeling stuffy. Sixteen uniquely decorated rooms range from wood-paneled suites with carved-stucco ceilings to a former chapel lined with original hand-painted azulejos; the hotel’s three tiered courtyards culminate in a highest level with a small heated outdoor pool shaded by a majestic palm and offering distant Tagus views. The residence’s storied past (notable historic guests) and proximity to major art collections make it especially appealing to culture-minded travelers." - Laura Dannen Redman

"Palácio Ramalhete has the soul of a historic property—Manuel II, Portugal’s last king, and Britain’s Duke of Windsor were once guests—without any of the attendant stuffiness. Situated in an 18th-century palace on the Rua das Janelas Verdes, each of the 16 accommodations has its own unique character. The Oak Suite, for instance, features handsome wood wall paneling with an ornate carved-stucco ceiling, while the spacious Dove Room, which occupies the palace’s former chapel, is lined with original hand-painted blue-and-white azulejos (ceramic tiles). There are three tiered internal courtyards, the highest of which has a small heated outdoor pool with a massive palm tree for shade and River Tagus views in the distance. Art lovers, take note: Just opposite the hotel is the National Museum of Ancient Art, filled with important Portuguese works that include Nuno Gonçalves’s Panels of St. Vincent."

Palacio Ramalhete, Lapa, Lisbon, Portugal - Explore & Book

"History seeps from every corner of this 18th-century mansion. It’s set in the peaceful, gently Bohemian district of Lapa, long a favourite with writers and artists. It was this very palacio which Madonna took over as her Lisbon home during 2018-19, and keen book worms might recognise it as the setting for author Eça de Queiroz’s classic 1888 novel Os Maias. But even if you know nothing about the Queen of Pop or Portuguese literature, we wager that you’ll be seduced by the elegant architecture and serene ambiance here. The rooms and suites have been skilfully woven into the structure of the old house - all are different, and all are packed with original features. One is clad in handsome oak panelling; another sits in the former kitchen, with sofas beneath a huge stone hearth. There’s also a trio of azulejo-lined lounges, a bar serving the kind of sophisticated drinks you’d expect (including 10 different takes on the G&T), and even a secret passageway hidden behind a revolving dresser. Perhaps the biggest draw is the tiered courtyard outside, where daybeds and glowing lanterns are scattered among pots of fragrant roses and jacaranda. Crowning it all is a small palm-shaded pool on the upper level, where you can lie back, gaze out over the rooftops to the River Tagus beyond, and completely forget you’re in one of Europe’s busiest capitals. Highs A wonderful respite from the noise and heat of the city - and it’s one of the few boutique hotels in Lisbon with its own pool The feel is refined, romantic and authentic, yet far from stuffy - this is a place where you can really unwind The delicious breakfast spread - one of the best we’ve tasted in Portugal. There's also a selection of tapas-style dishes - ideal with cocktails or a glass of wine The renowned National Museum of Ancient Art is just down the road, and nearby Tram 15 will whizz you downtown or to the historic sights of Belém in 10 minutes Warm, welcoming staff who are clearly passionate about the building and its past Lows This is a quiet, residential area a little way from the city centre - not ideal if you want to be in the heart of the action There’s no lift, so you’ll have to climb up several flights of stairs to reach the top-floor rooms (though staff will help with luggage) The pool, and its deck, are small - get there early if you want to nab a lounger Only a couple of twin rooms (it's best suited to couples), though there are extra beds and baby cots for little ones allowed in the Suites" - Abi Dare

Palacio Ramalhete Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal) 47 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Palácio Ramalhete, located amongst the walkable, narrow streets in the old Lisbon neighborhood of Janelas Verdes, is a tranquil place decorated with little more than courtyards, views and sunlight, that and the occasional touch of geometrically patterned tile-work. The hotel’s name translates roughly to “palace of flowers,” but it’s anything but flowery — it’s a reference to a single depiction of sunflowers in a panel of tiles at the base of a stairway. The sunflowers have been nearly rubbed away by a couple centuries of footsteps, which is fitting enough anyway, as they were intended as the placeholder for a coat of arms that the original residents of the 18th-century palace never finished." - Tablet Hotels

Unassuming from the street view, this accommodation will impress those with the highest expectations ! This is truly a beautiful boutique hotel with large rooms, appealing decor throughout, a graceful dining room and a choice of sitting rooms (inside or out). This 300yo hotel includes a bar servicing inside and out along with shaded outdoor gardens and a rooftop pool. The staff are friendly, helpful and keen to ensure you enjoy your stay. For the older generations, there are a lot of stairs, so book a room near the front door. It is rumoured that 'Madonna' once stayed at this wonderful accommodation!!

Wonderful staff, interiors and location. Perfect for a romantic weekend. Situated in a quiet area just a 5 minute walk to the bohemian bars and cafes lining Rua de Santos O Velho (visiting these is a must, we recommend nearby Yallah and Bloom). Hotel interiors are gorgeous, exactly what we wanted in a former 17th century palacio; marble, masonry and tiles tastefully restored. Candles line the stairs at night. The weather wasn’t quite right to test the pool but its courtyard looked lush for a warm summer’s day. Our superior room was well sized and decorated, the bed was comfy though the bathroom was dated and the towels / dressing gowns were also tired which let the room down; given the overall experience is luxe, I’d have expected higher quality. There was just one mirror in the bathroom which made getting ready more difficult when there’s two of you. Would have been nice to have one near the vanity area. The service was impeccable; staff were polite, friendly and welcoming. You felt like a guest in a b&b which we preferred over staying in an anonymous hotel. Breakfast is served in a lovely room with a small but considered and balanced menu. Very happy.

Well meaning staff but felt scripted particularly as English speaker. A nightmare for us checking after dark. Only a small brass sign behind bush, no busser hrelying on the evening staff, 1 person, seeing you in a monitor apparently. He didn't see us, we got in only after another guest arrived from dinner is how we got in. The hotel is by a set of steps which that evening had a homeless person going through a trash barrel next to the hotel door. Gorgeous work of the decorations, a series of connected structures with an exposed patio is lovely and rooms are nice comfortable and functional. Pillow were typical, soft HOWEVER There were 4 sets of stairs, 2 of which were very dark to get to our room. One was narrow with a 90degree turn and is not lit at the corner. You will be on stairs to get anywhere in this place. The shower handle fell off when turning it on and likely still has my workaround fix.. That was all our first 40 minutes on property. Our room was never made up the next day. We had a nice patio and few, perfect for breakfast, but no room service available. Best thing about the place? hmm 🤔

I would describe the Palacio Ramelhete as quiet understated luxury with an old-world feel. The historic hotel is located in an ideal location between Belem and the Lisbon waterfront with easy access to both by bus, tram or Uber. We walked around the local neighborhood near the museum and found several good restaurants. Our room was the Grand Ramelhete Suite which was large and luxurious. One of the best things about the hotel is the included full breakfast with several treats on the menu. ||We were met by the friendly professional staff at the door who took our bags and the hotel manager provided us with some refreshments and introduced us to the hotel, amenities, etc. We knew from that moment that we were in good hands from attentive staff committed to our comfort. Note: Other reviews mentioned the need to carry luggage up and down stairs. We did carry our bags down some stairs to the reception area for checkout and a staff member helped us carry them to the street. Given it’s a luxury hotel, they would have taken it from the room if asked.

We called the day before asking about parking and were told there was a place 2 minutes away. On the day we arrived, we got sent a location 15 minutes away, so we had to carry our luggage across town. When we arrived, the door was locked and no one was answering the door, phone, or WhatsApp.After waiting for 15 minutes, we got an SMS with a code to the door but arrived to an empty reception.Another 5 minutes passed before a guy appeared to check us in.The next day we asked for a late check-out to compensate for the issues and were told they wanted 20 euros per hour of late check-out. We were shocked but accepted before going out into the city.At the time the original check-out was supposed to happen, we got a message that we needed to check out at the expected time because someone needed the room, and we had to rush back to the hotel to get our stuff. One of the most unprofessional staff experiences we've had

Location is perfect, mixture of services and local life close by the center. Hotel is in historical building and decorated with antique and modern style, it is truly beautiful. Even though you are in the city, you don't hear much noise and inside the sound proof is good. Also, the hotel is small so there is feeling of privacy. We had a bath tub, it was really nice room with a small view to the sea. Breakfast is high quality, the guest can choose from a rather large menu. And let's not forget the good customer service, the staff is available.

I researched many Lisbon hotels and am very glad we chose the Palacio Ramalhete. The hotel is a bit out of center in the Lapa neighborhood, away from the noise and traffic of the main tourist areas. Yet, as it is close to the river, it was always very easy to get around. The decor throughout is absolutely charming, retaining the feel of a private palace. Our room was huge and gorgeous but the rooms vary considerably, so it is best to book directly where you can see all the options. There are many attractive public places as well, including a terrace and rooftop pool, where one can relax. Breakfast and staff were excellent too. I would classify this place as a hidden gem.

We were recommended this wonderful hotels a year or so ago, and we had been trying to stay since then .. Finally we managed to book there last room for three nights in early September.. From the outside it could be a normal door into a typical Lisbon home..but once inside you are transported in a world of splendour and calm ( pre warning …there is no lift and plenty os stairs ) check-in was very relaxed and biscuits and drinks were plentiful. Our room was right at the top of the palace, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We usually stay in central Lisbon, so this district was new to us and very fun.. lots of cool cocktail bars and numerous restaurants within walking distance.. the outside terrace of the palace was wonderful to sit in early evening, whilst enjoying a local wine. Breakfast was very well presented and service was just right. Fresh coffee and freshly squeezed OJ was always topped up.. Overall.. if you’re visiting Lisbon and they have availability “stay” you will not be disappointed.. we will be back

Yelp
We loved this property for our short stay in Lisbon. It is very peaceful and the staff are extraordinarily nice. We booked a basic category of rooms but were upgraded to one of the biggest suites for our stay. Our suite was larger than my first apartment I think. There is a very good daily breakfast and the mini-bar in the room is also good. This is the perfect property to stay at if you do not like chain hotels and are looking for something a bit more elegant.

Yelp
This is a lovely boutique hotel set in a quite neighborhood within walking distance of Barrio Alto and the train station for Cascais. They offer an excellent continental breakfast. The staff is very amicable. The furnishings are excellent and well suited to the boutique setting and historical aspect of the hotel. For those that are interested in literature, Os Maias by Portuguese author José Maria de Eça de Queiroz is set in the Palacio Ramalhete.

Yelp
Wonderful 'palacito' of 12 rooms that felt more like staying in a private house than a hotel. The staff was caring and charming. We took the cheapest category of rooms and yet it was very comfortable. The hotel is stunning with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The location of the hotel, between Belem and Bairo Alto, is ideal for tourists like us. The outdoor pool is a significant advantage - it is facing the sun. Would recommend to anyone

Yelp
Great hidden gem, Palácio Ramalhete is a small enchanted oasis in the middle of the Historic Lisbon area.
