Oakville Grocery, a Napa institution since 1881, delights with fresh sandwiches, gourmet salads, and an extensive wine selection in a casual outdoor setting.
"Oakville Grocery, right off Highway 29, is the slightly less glamorous version of Dean & DeLuca, with a fanbase that consists mostly of tourists and their drivers. It’s a rustic-looking mom-and-pop-style stop filled with gourmet snacks, sauces, and souvenirs. If you’re not careful you might end up spending as much as you would at a sit-down restaurant up the road, since the majority of prices are slightly inflated and quietly hidden at the bottom of each item. But if you need to grab breakfast quickly on your way to an early tasting, or feed a group of 15+ for lunch on a tight schedule, this is the place. Among the bakery items and pre-made food to-go, is a deli full of high-quality sandwich options (hot and cold), wood-fired pizza made fresh in the oven outside, and sides to please even the pickiest of eaters. Space is limited and consists strictly of outdoor seating, but you can sometimes snag a spot by avoiding the lines and ordering ahead online." - Jasmine Alexandra
"This venerable sandwich shop and deli sits conveniently along Highway 29 and has soothed the soul of many a hungry traveler. The restored historic grocery — which has been in operation since 1881 and claims to be the oldest in the state — makes great sandwiches (the muffuletta is locally famous) and wood-fired pizzas. While you’re there, shop for high-end coffee, desserts, wine, olive oil, and other pantry provisions." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff
"It’s impossible to miss this classic spot en route to Yountville, with an endless line that starts at breakfast for favorites like the boysenberry danish and the Rutherford sandwich with applewood bacon, eggs, and cheddar, and doesn’t let up until closing time. If you’re here for lunch, try something from as many of the counters as possible—we like to get the Thai crunch salad, the toasted chicken gruyere sandwich, and a chewy, crispy spicy sausage pizza. While all food is packed to go, the true Oakville experience is to eat on the patio overlooking some of the most famous Cabernet vines in Napa Valley. While you’re there, make sure to check out the wine museum next door, filled with artifacts, vineyard maps, and a dizzying display of Baccarat chandeliers. " - christina julian, andrew steinthal
"Pack a Picnic from Oakville Grocery Take advantage of the Mediterranean-like climate in Napa Valley (it rarely rains between May and October) and pack a picnic — without compromising on the quality of your cuisine, of course. The Oakville Grocery on Highway 29 has been supplying travelers for over 100 years, although under its new owner, Leslie Rudd of Dean & Deluca, the offerings have become decidedly upscale. Specializing in California cheeses, charcuterie, a good selection of local wines and nicely prepared seasonal salads and sandwiches, pack a picnic for your next tasting appointment or enjoy the impressive view of Opus One from one of the tables outside the Grocery."
