The castle was amazing, the place was equally awesome. We didn't manage to find tickets to enter the castle but it's said that the castle looks better from outside than on the inside. I would say winter isn't the best time to visit the castle, the bridge which has the best view of the castle is closed for the winter. And the approach roads are extremely slippery, one would need hiking shoes to be confident on the trail.

This castle was enormous, but the way the castle was built was absolutely beautiful inside and out. We were lucky that day that there was a shuttle bus taking you from the bottom to the top to see the castle. If not, it's a 40 minute walk, which is quite hilly. Either way, definitely purchase your tickets online before showing up because they sell out. It had amazing views from walking up the hill to looking down at the village.

This is a beautiful place. The visit to the castle is stunning but not the place not thing to do here. There are many walking and hiking trails on the Castle grounds. When the weather is nice, take the hike out to the bridge. You won’t be disappointed by the view. The people are friendly and take time to visit one of the delicious restaurants. You can’t go wrong with any of them. They are just down the hill, walking distance, from the castles. Worth the visit but give yourself the whole day.

In a word: magical. Pro tip: it's a long and steep walk up to the castle, so I recommend the horse-drawn cart going up and a leisurely walk coming down. My friend and I went on a tour of the castle and we rode a bus up and a horse carriage on the way down. The best part was finding the bridge and seeing the amazing view of the castle in the distance. Our tour guide, Stephen was great, he told us a story about a dragon which was cute and he was very detailed in his answers. You are not allowed to take any photos inside the castle and there was a water closet right when you walk inside and that is the one you should use or you will be waiting until the end of the tour after the gift shop. We had a timed ticket and needed to scan it in a hurry. I did find the inside part of the tour to be very rushed which was highly disappointing.

Beautiful castle, worth the visit but no plan your day around this, the audioguide tour is only 30-40 min and you only see a small part of the entire property. It is incredibly beautiful what you see though, however, pictures are not allowed inside… It’s a bit tricky to get there if you are in winter. The are carriages that takes you the way uphill but, as you should know, this place is insanely crowded, so waiting lines can be long. The way up is only 20min and it is stunning, there’s a waterfall in the way up worth to admire for a few minutes. Get your ticket in advance and try to go early in the morning or be ready for the mass of tourists

Schloss Neuschwanstein located in the southern part of the Bavarian Alps is the inspiration behind the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland. King Ludwig II of Bavaria initiated construction of the castle in 1868. When completed it was a staggering 213 ft tall and perched on a hill it provided for quite an imposing site. Getting to the castle from Munich was quite the challenge as the closest town to the castle is a small German town called Fussen. It's about 2.5 hours by train from Munich and one may have to switch trains multiple times. Once in Fussen there is a bus service that will take you to the visitor center at the castle, the bus departs once an hour and is about a 20 minute ride. The alternative is to drive to the castle, parking at the castle when I went in the summer was 12 euros. I was worried about missing connecting trains so I hired a driver to take me to the castle. Once at the visitor center, one can either walk up to the castle (40 minute hike on an incline), take a horse carriage ( €5,50 = $6 USD), or take a shuttle to Mary's Bridge ( €3,50 = $3.85 USD) and then walk down to the castle from the bridge (10 minutes). Tickets to go inside the castle can be bought at the visitor center and they are timed tickets, so you have to be there on time, and usually have to purchase time slots in advance. No pictures are allowed inside the castle and they only allow you to see 13 rooms. Overall, the castle is a beautiful site to see. I didn't have the opportunity to go inside and I had heard from other tourists going inside that it was not worth it. Plus it was completely unpredictable what time I would arrive at the castle, especially since there is an allotted time slot. I delayed the day I went because it was raining, I still did encounter some rain, but the area is beautiful and I highly recommend visiting the castle and hiking around the area.

Pros: The decor on the outside and inside was absolutely breathtaking. You'll be able to look at waterfalls, trees, hills, and both the city from outside and inside the castle. In addition, inside the castle, you can see what the Mad King created -- a world of majestic wonderment. Audio translators are provided for your language upon request. To note: If you're driving a car, you'll want to park in the parking lot of the neighborhood right beneath the castle and take the shuttle bus up for just $3 and up AND down for $5. The bus can get full quite quickly and if you stand, you may want to lean against something because there are plenty of twists and turns going up and down the mountain to get to the castle and the drivers drive quickly. In the castle, be prepared to climb a LOOOOOT of stairs and if you have a backpack, you have to wear it on the front. You can't take photos inside of the castle unfortunately. Order your tickets quickly so they don't sell out. Overall score: A+

When entering the ground stops to get a timed ticket. Around the parking lot of the castle there is a museum, some shops, and some restaurants. Because the castle isn't accessible-friendly, these offer an alternative to those who are physically unable to experience the castle. To get to the castle, it's a 30-minute walk uphill on a paved road unless a shuttle is running, then it just a 10-minute walk uphill from the shuttle drop off point. Once inside the castle, you take the stairs up several floors. No photos allowed in museum. Audio tours available in English and German (not sure about other languages). Tour is just over 30 minutes. This is a worthwhile visit if near the area!

WOW! The beauty of this castle left me speechless. I love that Walt Disney was inspired to create the Disney castles after he visited this castle. We first saw the castle from a very high bridge along the trails around the castle. We did not know you had to have tickets to tour the inside of the castle, and we got so lucky that a lady was selling 2 tickets right outside. We got checked in 2 minutes before the tour started. This was meant to be! They asked what language we spoke as we began the tour, and then they handed us an item you had to hold to your ear like a phone to hear a guide in your language inform you of the history and displays throughout the castle. I was so amazed that a king once lived in such an extravagant castle with such breathtaking views. The place felt like a maze with all of the different rooms, floors, and spiraling staircases. The tour was very well organized and I would recommend it to anyone who is in the area! Just make sure to buy tickets in advance!

A beautiful castle. So ornate and well decorated. It is the inspiration for the Disney Castle. Sits up on a hill and sparkles in the sunlight. The tour is an audio tour with a guide. It takes about 30 minutes and you climb around 200 steps but not all at the same time. Incredible architecture as well as ornate Rococo and gothic design. Every room is completely different and entirely over the top with marble, gold, wood, tapestry, etc. a few great stories along the way. A great stop.

This 2nd stop of our 3 castle adventure was the most highly anticipated, perhaps due to all the hype surrounding it. Interestingly, it was also the most disappointing of the 3 for several reasons. We purchased our tickets for the 2 castles at once & were given a booklet with our tour times written on the front, only to discover the written time was incorrect (granted, we should have double checked the actual tickets)... thankfully, the information desk was willing & able to get us on the next available tour - unfortunately, it meant we needed to kill another hour. Note, these times are EXACT. No early entry and no late (5min+) entry. Having a tour guide was baffling as you listen to a device on the walk-through. It is rushed with little information & even less rooms to visit. No photos permitted. The tour was about 20min. We opted for the 8 euro carriage ride up. You're given a ticket for half off the return. I'm not sure when they quit running, but they were done before we were. The queue to board was orderly until it was time to board, then it was madness - people who just walked up jumped in, leaving the front of the line standing there confused with nothing to do but wait... again. In short, this felt more like a money grab than a walk down history lane. I'd recommend walking the grounds and skipping the tour, personally. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely to look at, you just don't really get time to.

The Disney castle in real life was majestic. I highly recommend walking to the bridge for a posterior view of the castle. The views of the landscape even without the castle were stunning. We booked a tour, which I do not think was worth the price as the interior was very unassuming and not at all like other lavish castles and palaces.

If you are planning a trip to Bavaria, no trip is complete without a visit to this fairytale castle! Easy to get to by train and bus. You'll know you're in the right place because thousands of tourist make this trip every day, every year. It's free to roam around the castle grounds so no need to pay entrance fee unless you want to see what it is like on the inside. But the grounds and exterior of this castle are its focal point. Neusweinstein castle has been inspiring all the castle drawings we've known today. Just know when u get to the castle, you can either trek up the mountain or take a horse and carriage up for a fee. Best part?? You get two for the price of one castle when visiting here.

This is a gorgeous stop in Germany, said to have inspired the castles from Disney's Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. When we arrived, there was a set time to go to the castle. It was a good distance away, so we had some free time in the town of Schwangau before ascending to the castle. It is a cute little town to explore and also see the Alpsee Lake you can walk down to for a bit. There is also another castle called Hohenschwangau Castle that you can see from the outside. Once it was time to head to the castle, we started the steep hike up to Neuschwanstein! I'm a pretty healthy/active person in my 30s, so the hike itself wasn't too bad for me - and we had some older people in our group too who made it just fine - you definitely can take your time! There are also stops all along the way for the to see see little bits and pieces of the history of the castle and of Ludwig II. When we arrived, we had a set time that we were allowed into the castle. There is a lookout when you get to the top of the mountain and you can see out onto the valley below, so we did that and had a rest before we were let into the castle. The interior was very pretty, but you aren't allowed to take photos inside. Once we were done with our castle tour, we headed back down the mountain (lots easier than the way up!) It was a very full day of activity and beautiful sights to see - I highly recommend it!

To get there from Munich: take train from main Munich Bahnhof (Central City) to Füßen. Direct train is about 2 hours. Cost is about 20€ round trip for one. They run hourly. Some of these trips you will have to switch trains so verify with clerk prior to departure. Once in Füßen you will take bus 73 or 78 to the castles. It's 5.20€ round trip per person. Bus drivers take cash only. Tickets online are 17€ plus 2.50€ processing fee for Neuschwanstein Castle. However if you take the chance and get your ticket in town it runs about 15€ for same day. If you are pressed for time this may not work for you. Also check when buying kid tickets as they could be free when purchasing online or in person compared to using a tour agency. You can take the horses up and down or just one way. Going up is 8€ per person. Kids are probably cheaper. Cash only. We took the horses up and walked down. Depending on your group size going on your own may definitely be cheaper and you are on your time and not someone else's with a tour company. Once you get to the castle you will have to wait until your entry time comes up to enter. They have lockers to put bags, coats etc. as they don't allow big bags inside the castle. There is an area to sit. Also a great area to take photos of the entrance to the castle. There's also a shop there to get souvenirs. I also believe they had snacks. Because I've been here before I expected more from the tour. Now they do the audio guide so there's no question and answers nor any extra tidbit info you would get otherwise from a normal tour guide. Of course there is a gift shop but at the bottom of the hill before going into the castle there are shops plus shops are in and near the train station. I would browse those before the castle gift store just to know price differences and options. Castle itself is still beautiful but I hate that you don't actually have a tour guide throughout. So if you are a true history buff and really want to know more recommend doing your research rather than expecting this tour to give you those details. You will be provided an audio guide and as you enter certain sections there is a worker that will play the recording and tell you to listen.

Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most well known castles, as the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland is modeled after it. There are several options for getting to the castle. You can walk, take a shuttle, or go on a horse-drawn carriage. We opted to take the shuttle uphill and walked downhill after. After getting dropped off, we walked to the Marienbrucke- Queen Mary's Bridge. There was a line, but it moved steadily. Once we got to the bridge, I only managed to walk halfway across before my fear of heights got to me. The bridge provides you with a view of the castle from a distance. We made our way up to the castle after. We only walked around the outside, as we opted out of the tour. On the side of the castle, I noticed a set of grotesque- uniquely carved heads. On the way down, there is a viewpoint where you can take a photo with the front of the castle in the background. I'm happy that I had the opportunity to come here while I was in Germany!

Some people come here and say it's not that impressive... I ask them then, what castle do you own that you're using for comparison? This place is ASTONISHING. If you've ever seen Lord of the Rings, Willow, any fantasy movie and thought, "this is really cool" this is where you need to come. The sheer size of it alone, and the setting around it are enough. You could even skip seeing the inside and just use your imagination instead based on the exterior alone. The surrounding area is simply gorgeous as well. This needs to be on your bucket list.

Well let's start by saying this is a beautiful Castle. But it is not run properly. We arrived at the castle on time but no one is directing you to the turnstile where you scan your ticket. There were 6 of us and one of us scanned the ticket to go through and the rest could not get through because the 4 minute time frame was up..The group we were in was slow in scanning their tickets .We had to go to the information desk where the lady was very rude. We had to wait 30 more minutes to start our tour. There are a lot of steps in the castle. The first group of steps were 61. The next one had over 30. Get to the turn stile 10 minutes early. The tour is 25 minutes and all you see is "3" rooms This castle was not finished. Mind you the 3 rooms are spectacular... Waiting for the horse drawn carriage was joke. There was no one keeping people in line so when the buggy arrived it was a free for all. We used Viator and they spent more time at the palace first and we had too many issues with the Castle

I love this castle! Fun fact, this is the caste Disney used to model the Disney castle. I've been here about 4 times during different seasons and it's always beautiful! There is another castle across the "street" do you really get a 2-for-1! This is not handicap accessible, just FYI. If you get the time to go over to the bridge, you can get a great photo with the castle in the background.

To be honest, the place looks better from aerial shots. It was a bit underwhelming and I was questioning all the effort just to get here. Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful and you can still get some nice photos from the ground, but it just was not as magical as I had imagined it would be. I think there is a lot of hype and marketing, especially when people say it is what inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty's Castle. I took a horse and carriage ride to/from the castle from the visitors center and that was cool other than all the horse farts that flew in my face. Maybe I would've liked it more if the Queen Mary's Bridge (Marienbrucke) was open when I visited because from there I can think you can get the best pictures of/with the castle. Also, the interior of the castle was pretty lame and tour wasn't that great. The king liked swans apparently (it's in the name). You don't really need to enter the castle but might as well if you're making a trek all the way there (best to book tickets in advance). I think you really just need access to the bridge! Otherwise, I guess it's worth a trip since it is very beautiful from bird's eye view, but honestly it was just not as majestic as I expected it to be.

Be prepared to be fully vaccinated plus boosted to visit the interior of Neuschwanstein now. We originally booked our castle tour for 11/30/21 but due to the regional COVID outbreak all museums shut down and castle tours had to be canceled. I am still trying to get my refund back as I am writing this review but to their credit, management has been responsive trying to resolve the issue. We drove our rental Audi A4 from Munich to Fussen which took about 90 minutes one-way with little to no traffic. We parked in one of the main lots which cost 8EURO for the day. The drive was easy and relaxing. Despite Marienbrücke (the famous suspended bridge) being closed we still found a beautiful spot for photos. The surrounding area had snow so the trails were extra slippery. I won't leak the details but the spot we took cliffside photos can be found online if you do some research. I would not recommend this photo spot for the faint of heart, especially with slippery snow on the trails. Have micro spikes on your boots to be safe. The snow made the castle and surrounding area extra fairytale-like. Definitely looked more grand and beautiful from afar compared to being right next to the castle. Neuschwanstein is a must-see if you're in Bavaria and if you're a Disney fan you must witness the castle that inspired Walt Disney himself. If we go back next time we will have do the interior tour.

When you're a kid, you read fairytale books and then slowly grow out of that magic as you age. Neuschwanstein Castle brings that fairytale back. We were truly speechless as we approached this jaw-dropping, magical-beyond-belief castle. We visited in winter time, as snow was slowly falling and the path up was covered with sparkling flakes. The path to view the castle from across the mountain (where you can get that photo of the entire castle in view) was closed due to the weather, as that path gets slippery. However, we could still climb up the hill for the tour of the castle, so didn't mind at all. You can get tickets before you arrive or when you get there. I recommend getting them beforehand, as this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I wouldn't want to risk it. Tickets are only 13 euros for a guided castle tour, which is 100% worth it. The rooms were gorgeous, with the windows looking out at incredible views. One tip is that if you go during winter, be sure to be wearing waterproof boots. I was wearing tennis shoes and didn't realize that there's about a 20 minute uphill walk to get to the castle that was covered in snow. My shoes were soaked through, so I eventually took off my socks, put my warm gloves on my feet, and hobbled down for the rest of the way (LOL). Sometimes I can't believe that this place exists and that I was really here. I'd love to go back in summer to see it more clearly and in different scenery. This is truly a bucket list experience!

I went on a rainy day and did not tour the castle, I only did the trails around it. It was fantastic and well worth it even with the rain. I look forward to going back again and will do the tour next time, possibly in the fall when the leaves are changing. The forest around the castle is fantastic and there were still a lot of wildflowers in bloom. The waterfalls were a highlight!

The Schloss Neuschwanstein is a beautiful castle. It is well known for being Walt Disney's inspiration for Cinderella's Castle. You need a ticket in order to go through a guided tour so it is smart to order your tickets ahead of time. Tour times are very strict and if you just show up with plans to purchase tickets you will most likely have to wait for hours to get in. Once you pick up your tickets it will take about twenty minutes walking uphill to get to the castle from the road. You can rent a carriage ride if you do not want to walk. The scenery up the hill is beautiful and the trees help keep you cool. Along the way you will pass by a gift shop and opportunities to grab a drink and a snack. The tours are given in German and English. Before the tour you are asked not to take photos of the interior. It's an honor system that the majority of people appear to respect. The tour guides are loaded with information that is scripted but enjoyable. I was surprised by how well kept and clean the castle is. The rooms still have the original furniture and paintings on the walls. The tour took about an hour and left most of us wanting to see more.

This place is amazing and will live up to all your Disney fairy tale childhood dreams. The place could be a bit more organized but it is still worth it. We arrived at 2:20 and our tour had booked us on a guided tour at 410. Since we wanted to go up to the viewing bridge, we decided to take the shuttle up and then walk up to the bridge (less than 5 min). The shuttle line was very long and we had to wait for two full busses to leave and then got on. After seeing the bridge, it was 325 and we went down to get some food, which is easy to get at the base of the castle. There were no cheesy pretzels left but the prices weren't bad considering the location. The actual tour is 35 min and we barely made it back to the bus. This place doesn't run tightly enough to be super comfortable when you are on a time limited tour. You can't take photos because the king who made it didn't want reproductions to be available. It makes it feel much more exciting, I think. I loved the grotto, and the little patio off it. The weather is actually pretty similar to Munich.

Absolutely gorgeous castle and pairs with the equally beautiful Hohenschwangau castle just next door. Fascinating stories of the Bavarian Kings, specifically Ludwig II. Some notes if you're going... 1. Go early!!! We had the earliest 9:00 tour and 11:45 second tour of the castles and it was still packed. 2. You can get tickets in advance online or last minute at the ticket center down in the town valley. 3. Walk up to Hohenschwangau but go for the horse drawn carriage up to Neuschwanstein for €7. Then walk down for free. 4. No photos or video inside but I might have seen a person discretely using a GoPro to catch the fascinating history. 5. The views from the top of the castles are EPIC! So take a moment to soak them in. 6. The town of Füßen about 6 minutes drive away has a very cool old town with lots of shopping, hotels, and restaurants and is beautiful at night.

Beautiful castle and Cinderella castle at the Disney was modeled after this place, so I was told. You may want to get a ticket in advance or wait in queue like me for one hour. To get here from Munich, take a train to Fussen. From their take a bus to Neuscheanstein. If you don't know which bus to take, just follow the fellow tourists or ask a bus driver. Be sure to get Bayern-Ticket at the first station in Munich to save money on train. Bus here is also included. Audio tour is available in English and several other languages. They don't let you in if you arrive early but they have places to sit and eat. One of the fried bread was so tasty, I went back to get more after eating one. I suggest arriving as early as possible as they get really busy here. To get up here, if you don't want to walk, they have a bus and horse carriage available for small fee. I walked up and it wasn't bad at all. I was wearing comfortable walking shoes and my body needed after eating so much

Words can't really describe how beautiful this castle is. The wait and the cost to tour the castle is worth it. The walk up the hill is a slight challenge but also worth it. It's even neat when you're walking along the path, people are selling glühwein and pastries. The smells are amazing. The castle is unfinished. So you only get to tour a couple of floors, but it is pretty breathtaking. The throne room, the bedroom, the ballroom... It is all outstanding. I especially loved the bedroom. The wood work is very impressive. Drive out of your way and visit this incredible place.

Loved making this day trip out to see this castle. The tour was very nice and informative. When you get to the castle be prepared to either walk up the road to get to the castle or you can pay for horse drawn buggy. If you're walking watch out for the horse . Also, make sure you book in advance as this place was pretty busy (pre Covid). Once you are done with the tour you can walk around the surrounding area and do some hiking. This is a nice day trip to make if you're in Munich and highly suggest it.

What a great day and adventure! You are able to see the reasons Disney Castles are based off of this place right away. It made me feel transported back to the time of these Kings and Queens. Learning about Ludwig II and the sketchy way that he passed was all part of the lore. The views are amazing and the town you go through to get there had all you need. The walk up to the castle can be tough for those that do not like a little work out. I walked and was fine. It did not seem worth it waiting for the horse carriage. The bus tour to the place was part of the fun. Easy to meet them in Munich and then take the trip.

I don't know. I mean I get why people want to come here. Disney, castle, blah blah blah. And believe me, I love castles but this one left me pretty underwhelmed. And it wasn't the renovation. The scaffolding was only at the front and didn't impede on the whole structure. It's just... I don't know, I wanted more magic. Everyone in reviews tells you how magical it is. How majestic and gorgeous. The Instagram pictures inundated my feed with it's glory. It's a grey building built on a hill with some interesting turrets with huge groups of Chinese tourists screaming the whole time. All I can say is do your research and go with your gut. If I could do it all again, I might choose another of Bavaria's amazing vistas.

This is unforgettable! Wear comode table shoes and be ready for different climates. If the weather is snowing or icy, the bus will not be running and creates a long line for the carriages. Be ready for a steady climb up, though it can be done at a casual pace if plenty of time to make it for the time on the ticket. Don't forget the tickets have a time and after five minutes there is no entrance. You'll have to return. Part of the way up to the castle there is a vendor with donuts and fried cheese, good on cold days, but do plan to have a snack. The buses run regularly to and from the train station making it easy to arrive and depart. Lines tend to move quickly at the ticket counter, but found already having a reservation to be convenient. The only downside is not being able to take pictures, it is beautiful and unforgettable. Don't be afraid of stairs, because there are plenty.

When you see it up on the side of the mountain it looks quite small, but don't be fooled. The castle truly is large and beautiful in- and outside, and I can see why it was an inspiration for Walt Disney. Your tour time is given to you when you purchase your ticket, and you have the option of a guided tour in English or German depending on your timing. Tour groups are VERY BIG, which is unfortunate, and the next tour is right on your heels. That said, the castle rooms are beautiful and the views are stunning. Is it worth the money? I think so. Other tips: while you can book a ticket online in advance, you can't do it more than 3 days before your visit. Your reservation must also be before 3pm local time the day before your planned visit. If you miss that window, you can show up the day of and hope for a good time slot. If you're driving, get there early and be sure to park at parking lot 4 (P4) since it's closest to the ticket office. Be sure to also purchase a round trip bus ticket up to the castle if you'd rather not hike up/down the mountain or pay for a horse carriage ride. Give yourself some time to get up top since you'll want to take photos while you wait for your group to be called. Also, if you're visiting during winter, note that Mary's Bridge will be closed due to snow and ice. If you choose to also visit Hohenschwangau Castle, you'll have to do this one first. If you need to kill time in between, the local sit down restaurants are always packed, so grab a coffee or a drink at the Ameron Resort & Spa's bar instead.

What can you say that would go it justice? It's every bit as magnificent in person as in the pictures. First of all, be prepared for EXERCISE, because, even if you take the horse-drawn wagon up (which I HIGHLY recommend), you're still going to do a lot of climbing. We did walk in & back out from our hotel (see Hotel Schwansee) but we logged 8.6 miles and 47 flights worth of climbing... but it's worth every step. There's a good number of people on each tour (even during off season) but we didn't feel like we missed anything and our guide was very good. Don't leave without making the extra walk to Mary's Bridge (Marianplatz) - the view is incredible and the sound of the waterfall just adds to the charm.

An absolutely beautiful castle that is a must visit just remember to get your tickets in advance if you want to enter it as they do sell out. I went via a tour group so the tickets inside where included and it was pretty amazing to visit inside but outside is where all the beauty is at. When you go to the bridge behind the castle to get those million dollar shots just expect to wait on a line since the bridge is narrow and everyone wants to take amazing photos up there. The does move at least fairly fast so your not feeling restless there.

I was excited to see this castle after finding out that Walt Disney designed the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland after Neuschwanstein Castle ( and anyone who has visited Disneyland will easily see the resemblance). So, the reason for my 4 Star review is that for right now at least, touring the castle is a bit of a hassle. Online tickets are sold out for weeks. We could have paid for a Day Tour, but that came at a cost - $60.00 each for the tour and $30.00 each for the tickets . Instead, we booked a train ticket from Munich for $15.00 & toured the area without visiting the interior castle. We didn't regret this decision, because we had flexibility with our schedule, and we saved a lot of money. It was somewhat annoying that online tickets weren't available, but yet the day tour companies had them to sell. We wanted to visit Queen Mary's Bridge, but it is closed right now. This castle, built by King Ludwig 1869-1887, IS stunning and we had lovely views of the exterior. We rode by train from Munich to Fussen, and then our train ticket also worked for the shuttle bus ride to Hohenschwangau, where the castle is located. There is plenty of shopping and dining options in the area.

This place is literally out of a fairy tale and well worth the effort to get here! I took a tour from Munich that also included a stop in nearby Oberammergau. However, the highlight of the tour was obviously Neuschwanstein - if you can, you need to go to the top of the hill to the bridge that spans the canyon for the picture-perfect view you see on all of the postcards. It is absolutely breathtaking! With the tour, tickets to the castle were included, so that made things much easier. The tour of the castle is short but also well worth it. There are a lot of great elements to the castle interior that you won't get to see elsewhere. If you are in the Munich area, do not pass up the opportunity to see this unique piece of history!

Of all the places in Germany we knew we wanted to see - this castle was a must. After all, it's the real life castle all the Disney castles are based upon. There are many ways to get here. A tour group. Train and bus. But in the end we rented a car for the day and drove from Munich so we wouldn't be rushed. Driving in Germany is a breeze and they are great drivers. No stress and it was easy to find with GPS. We barely made it in time to see both - nabbing the last tour of the day for Neuschwanstein - but we made it! You wait for your allotted time to tour the castle and then are provided with a self-audio tour in your chosen language to put up to your ear (bring your own headphones). You are free to roam around the grounds and explore until your tour time. There is a bridge and there are some trails that have stunning views if you have the time. We were there during the winter (on Thanksgiving day 2017 actually) and so it wasn't overly crowded - but apparently during the summer it gets insane with hours-long waits to get tickets and tours selling out. You can buy tickets in advance online (we didn't) and you should if you are going during the main tour season because we just got lucky. It's normally sold out in advance for days/weeks during the summer or you'll wait for a few hours in line the day of. Last tours are typically around 3pm or so and they give you tickets for 1.5-2 hours before and you MUST be ready to enter when your allotted time pops up on the screen. The castle itself is at the top of a pretty high and steep hill. You can ride a bus to the top which is another $2 or so - it's not included in your tour price. It stops running about 20 minutes after the last day's tour ends. If you miss it you'll have to walk the 20 minutes or so to the bottom. Parking was also $7. This castle is STUNNING outside - it's also stunning inside but for me - the outside was the real draw. I'm glad I got to see the inside of this castle - the decor, the grotto, and learn a little more about the "mad king".

You can't go to Germany (Munich ish) without visiting this castle. Why pass up the opportunity to see the castle that inspired Disney's Cinderella castle??! We ended up booking our transportation via a tour company (Viator) and it was well worth the money. The drive itself to the castle (and two other locations in the package) is a long drive. You also learn about the history of King Ludwig II and his crazy interest that inspiration for the imaginative and definitely over the top decor. The only down side is not being able to take photos inside the castle (like many/most of the palaces and castles you'll visit in Europe). Another plus about going with a tour group is time management. We research going by train and bus to get to the castle, which would already take most of the day. Purchasing your tickets separately and guessing what time you will make the hike up the castle seemed a bit tedious for a vacation excursion. With a tour group, you get an assigned time that correlates with enough time to plan a meal, take scenic photos, and make your scheduled tour time. The castle on the outside is breathtaking. Don't skip Marie's bridge, that's the best view of the castle (right out a children's fairytale). It was very achievable if you pay the minimal fee to ride the bus option and hike down to the castle. Whichever way you chose to get to the castle (hike, bus, or horse carriage), you will still have to walk a good ways, so bring some good walking shoes!!

Why 5 stars? Because it was definitely about as majestic as you'd imagine it would be. --- --- --- Review #1800 for me, and I'm using it to write about a super memorable experience! Months ago, when my wife and I were planning a trip to Europe, we knew that we wanted to visit Germany, but were undecided on which city we'd go to. My wife started researching Neuschwanstein, and decided that she was going to make it a required stop on our itinerary. Since Munich was the closest major city to this castle, our decision was made. It was about a 2-hour train ride from Munich, which was enjoyable because we had been walking so much on our trip in Europe, that we were happy to sit down for a while and stare at the mountains out the window. When we arrived, we took a short bus ride on a very crowded bus, and then hopped on another bus to get up to the top of the mountain. We had the option of walking up the mountain, but we elected to spend a few extra bucks to make our lives easier. The best photos of the experience came right at the beginning, as we stepped onto a bridge and saw the castle from afar. If you're afraid of heights, you might not love the bridge - it's crowded and wobbly, but just remember that thousands of people stand on it every day. It is quite high up above the land below, and offers breathtaking views of the castle and the surrounding area. You're not allowed to take photos inside the castle, which is kind of a bummer, but it was interesting to see. It's kind of crazy that they never ended up finishing building this castle, but you do get to see what was finished before the King died. From the outside, you'd never know that it wasn't done, because it looks impeccably nice - almost like they pressure wash it daily. The coolest room inside was the room that the King made to do most of his sitting in - it's all gold. You'll definitely know it when you see it. 1.3 million people come here every year, so expect big crowds, but it was definitely worth the trip from Munich!

This is the famous castle in Bavaria. This is the castle that Walt Disney drew inspiration from for his Sleeping Beauty Castle. There are a ton of Tour Groups available that can take you to Neuschwanstein Castle. Or you can do it yourself by taking a train from Munich or just driving there. The train actually takes longer than traveling by road. I suggest you come without a tour. I did it with a tour group, and I didn't think it was worth it. There is a ton of stuff you can see and do around here, and you don't want to be on a time crunch. Speaking of time crunches, make sure to arrive on time for the Castle tour. Like all of Germany, they run on strict punctuality. If you're 1 minute late, they close the doors and you can't get in. So make sure to arrive 15 minutes before the actual tour starts. The castle tour was short and sweet. No photos are allowed inside. They have this phone thingy they give you so you can hear the tour guide better. I like that technology. The inside of the castle, as you expect, is pretty extravagant. I wish we could take photos inside, but oh well. None of the Ludwig's palaces and castles allowed photos. The walk up to the castle is about 15-20 minutes. So bring your walking shoes. The hike isn't too bad. An average person should be able to do it. If you're too lazy or can't walk up the mountain to go to the castle, you can take a shuttle or a horse carriage. But the wait time could be long, so I suggest you just walk up, unless you're physically unable to. During non-winter months, you also need to go to the Marienbruke. That's where you can get the iconic Castle shot that you see in sooooo many photos. From the Castle to Marienbruke is another 15-20 minute hike. The bridge is popular, and there will be a line to get on. So plan accordingly if you have to get to a castle tour. The bridge closes during winter, so if you want to get on the bridge, and I suggest you do, come during the warmer months. The village beneath the castles is Schwangau. There is a nice lake there. And there's even a Swan at that lake! How appropriate. Schwangau is your typical Bavarian looking village catered towards tourists. There are a few decent Bavarian restaurants there if you're hungry.

In a nutshell: ** if you haven't purchased tickets through a tour group you can do one of two things: 1) Make an online reservation/purchase no sooner than 2 days before your visit. This will assure that you will get a time slot that fits your travel plans. 2) Same day visit with no reservation means you will wait in line and take a chance as to what time your tour will start. **No photos allowed within the castle. **Best views of the castle is from the Marienfeld Bridge...quite scary if you are afraid of heights. **Ultimate best views of the castle require a small hike up a mountain (follow the trail) and capture that view. Not crowded but also not recommended for families with children and/or people with physical disabilities. As a note, if you want the full castle story best to also visit the original castle which is seen in the distance. This castle is the newer of the two and is the "moving on up" castle style. At the ticket center or online, you can get a small discount for viewing both castles. Also this IS the castle that inspired Disney's Cinderella Castle.

You will be going up a large incline for 3/4 mile (if you choose to skip the horse ride) and going up multiple flights of stairs inside Reserve your ticket and skip the 30+ minute wait in line! Reserve 2 days in advance before 3pm Make sure you arrive to the tour area early-you have a 5 minute window to enter your tour. Leave early if you plan on getting to the castle by horse ride (€4.50/person) as the carriages take awhile and there aren't a lot. In my 20 minute walk up the hill not a single carriage ever came by. About 10 people can fit per carriage. I made it up to the tour area in 25 minutes with a bathroom break, no photos and no stopping. The brouchure says 40 minutes and that would be an easy pace Bring headphones so you don't have to hold up the audio guide in order to hear throughout the tour Tour is 35 minutes long but I stayed in the area for nearly 4 hours Stay in the back of your tour group and that way you can go at a slower (but still too fast) pace There's a café after the tour ends, as well as multiple restrooms (free) and 2 gift shops. The café has fountain sodas for €3.30 and sparkling water for €2.20. The cheesecake is a reasonable price, but not that great. Definitely skip the calories. After the tour is completed there will be several things to see still. The first gift shop has postcards for €0.90 each, the second one has postcards for €0.30 with the original stamp. Additionally, there is a café and balcony with great views. The WC that is nearest the parking lots charges €0.50 for entry. Restrooms are kept up fairly well considering how much they are used. No hook for your belongings. There are coin machines in case you only have a €2 coin. Bring cash! Paying for tickets and parking:: You buy your tickets about 3 minutes walk from the parking lot. Go uphill (turn right if by the WC) and continue. On the right you'll (likely) see a huge line waiting outside. The ticket will have a tour number and time. Adults are €13 each, although you can get numerous combination tickets. I would definitely have enough cash on hand, as half of the cash registers today were only accepting cash. Make sure to pay for your parking prior to getting to the gate. You pay at a small wooden building (€6) in the parking lot. Bring cash! No photos or strollers inside

cool castle to check out! this is the inspiration for the disney castle :) can't photos inside so I just have some shots from outside the castle. Do get the tour tickets early, the wait time is crazzzzzy! Super popular and quite crowded, make sure you have some water with you as you wait in line (snacks would be good too). You can take a bus up to the top to see the view from the side (I'd recommend this so you don't have to hike up too much), and take a horse carriage down if you happen to see one on the way. Quite an interesting experience. This is not too far from Munich, but make sure you buy a flexible train pass so it's easier to catch a different train back if you miss your time!

Schloss Neuschwanstein is absolutely incredible (and magical). This historical castle inspired the Disney castle and with good reason- it looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. WHAT TO KNOW: -Make an online reservation through their official website prior to visiting, and complete your payment upon arrival. -Many Yelp/TripAdvisor reviews state that the inside of the castle isn't worth visiting, but my friend and I personally enjoyed learning about the history of the castle. Note that no photography (even with your phones) is allowed in here! The tour is very brief. -The best and most popular spot to photograph the castle is from Marienbrücke Bridge. After getting dropped off by the provided shuttle, the bridge can be reached after a short walking distance. GETTING THERE: -Reaching the castle requires an entire day trip from Munich. It's a 2-hour drive / about 3-hour "public transportation" travel time from Munich. There are a handful of online articles detailing how to get there using the train.

I am a huge Disney fan so I was very excited to see this castle in person since Walt Disney designed the Disneyland castle after this castle. We did the tour inside which was so cool and interesting. Not sure if thats the factor or if it's booked up or if we even should have had thorough info, of which my husband planned this event or lack of info and planning rather... There's restaurants and souvenir stores and a Swarovski Crystal Store as well. A couple other castles to purchase tickets. We're here for the Cinderella Inspired Walt Disney Castle called Schloss Neuschwangua. It's beautiful over in this area. Buses everywhere, horse Drawn Carriages to ride or you can hike. I DON'T THINK SO. I've had enough of these European Hikes and Hills!!! Lol. #SoSeriousThough. Currently in the car writing this review. It's just after 3pm and still got a ways to go. There's nothing interesting enough for me to be walking out in this beating sun and these 2 hours are a killer. So not my cup of tea. But anywho... The ticket salesman said we'd have to be at the bus stop an hour before our tour, if were catching a bus up to the castle. Later I'll find out the price for the bus and hopefully the Carriage Ride. It is the number one tourist spot in Germany. Don't get me wrong, but, I don't quite understand why. It's a gorgeous area and I love coming to the area. The lake is beautiful and the castle exterior is also beautiful. As you drive towards it the view is special. Perched up the mountain it looks quite small from the distance. The castle during winter and snow for me is my favourite view and it's truly magical. The tour is ok and generally rushed. You only see a part of the castle on the tour and it's about pumping volume through. No photos allowed on the inside. The opulence and excess of the King is certainly visible as you walk through the place. I come here often as all our visitors wanna come here. I am sure I will be back again in a few months ;-))

These two castles, Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein, are very interesting sites, especially for those who are traveling in Bavaria for the first time. The castles are very different in style and "feel," so worth seeing both. Tours are available in English as well as German. The tours are scheduled for specific times, and one must be punctual so as not to miss the time. The walk up the road to Schloss Neuschwanstein could be difficult for those not used to walking long distances on inclines, and especially tricky when snow-covered. If you take a horse ride up the mountain, be sure that you finish on time to ride back down. On our way back down the mountain, we encountered a women who was having an extremely hard time staying on her feet as she tried to make it down again. She was traveling alone and Russian, so she had a language barrier. She somehow missed the last horse cart down. My husband held her tightly by the arm and helped her down that long and icy road back down the mountain. I am not sure what she would have done had we not offered to help. The castles were beautiful and worth seeing, but the tour groups were large, and sometimes the number of people blocked us from seeing everything, and the tour guides moved quickly, often speaking before the rest of the group could catch up and receive the audio transmissions. We missed hearing what was said in several rooms just because it took s while for everyone to get to the next stop. The tours just gave a brief overview, not in-depth, so we were left with many questions that were left unanswered.

I think enough has been said and written about this place, so I don't need to elaborate any further. I visited Schloss Neuschwanstein on my last trip as a Philly-based Flight Attendant. I was fortunate enough to get a trip to Munich, so I made a mission to visit this place. Schloss Neuschwanstein has Picture-perfect setting and gorgeous views combine to make this an unforgettable experience. It took me two hours by train to get here, so I had to haul ass as soon as I arrived in Munich. It was a rather cold, and dreary day when I got there, but it didn't stop me from seeing the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside, the mountains and the tiny towns/villages below me. You'll find plenty of perfect spots for some great selfies and profile pics. The only downside is there's not a lot of vegetarian-friendly restaurants here, so be sure to pack your food!
