We met up with a friend that's been living in the Bondi area for the past few years so we let her choose where to eat. This ended up being Neighbourhood, a local hipster spot, which she's been to several times for drinks.
It was pretty bumping for a Wednesday evening (around 7:15pm). We were able to snag a more secluded table between the kitchen and backyard area. This place is loud and there were lots of large groups but it made for a good atmosphere. Just be prepared for the noise and music.
The menu is split into daily deals (Monday nights are burgers & beer for $15.00 AUD), drinks (cocktails, wines, beer and cider), small plates, mains, sides, burgers and desserts. Apparently, there a Sunday roast ($30.00 AUD) that sounds promising. FYI: there's a 10% service charge on Sundays and holidays. Staff were friendly and continuously brought out water jugs.
- Mac 'n' cini ($12.00 AUD for 5) - came with a side of blue cheese sauce. Actually, not too heavy, lightly fried but I wouldn't want to eat this if it was just me.
- Marinated eggplant san choy bau ($12.00 AUD for 3) - gem lettuce cups, mixed herbs, house pickles, Sriracha mayo and crispy shallots. This was a better small plate. A tasty vegetarian spin on lettuce wraps.
- Black angus rump steak ($15.00 AUD for 250g) - I added a glass of red ($5.00 AUD) as this was their Wednesday special. Pretty good deal in my books! Came with a small piece of roasted corn and potato fries. A bit weird that they didn't ask how I wanted my steak cooked but it all worked out. A tender, just before well done steak with an addictive jus sauce.
- Alabama slammer ($14.00 AUD) - southern fried chicken with burger cheese, bourbon BBQ sauce, blue cheese mayo and slaw. I had a bite and the sauce is on the sweet side. Decent but not the biggest burger. Doesn't come with any sides either.
It's casual but a pretty reasonable spot to grab a drink and a few bites in the Bondi hood. 3.5 stars.
