"Sloping Off Lesser-known ski fields are often run by clubs and have the benefit of thinner crowds and the opportunity for skiers and boarders to glide and carve where others haven’t. Rainbow Ski Area near Nelson on the South Island is great for boarders and offers lessons from novice to expert. Further south, Porters Ski Area outside Christchurch features such runs as the appropriately named Big Mama and other trails that cater to intermediate and advanced riders. In the North Island, try the Manganui Ski Area on Mount Taranaki for cheap no-frills skiing (meaning no gear rentals on-site). And on the eastern side of Mount Ruapehu, there’s the friendly club-run Tukino ski field, which is often open when the rest of the mountain is shrouded in clouds."

More impressive in person but we had cloud bullies the day we were there. If the clouds spoil your view you can still enjoy the trails which are impressive in their own right.

Mount Taranaki—majestic, brutal, and absolutely worth it. The climb tested every muscle, but the views rewarded every step. Steep scree slopes? More like nature’s treadmill in reverse. That final push—pure grit, zero comfort, 100% satisfaction. Summit sunrise? A front-row seat to Earth’s masterpiece. Legs screaming, heart pounding, soul soaring. The descent? A thrilling mix of sliding, stumbling, and laughing. Every ache forgotten the moment I looked back up. Taranaki doesn’t give its summit easily—but that’s what makes it legendary. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

Mount Taranaki is in many ways the iconic feature of this part of New Zealand and it dominates the landscape for dozens of miles around. Seen from space the Egmont National Park presents as a perfect circle around the volcano (still active) of untouched native bush. There are a number of famous viewpoints for photos but you can see the mountain most days from just about anywhere.

You have to wake up early in the morning.....I never give up...but here I had to...too windy...thick fog....and didn't have good shoes...it was slippery....small rolling stone when you have to go on all four...so good mountain shoes are necessary...cap as well even in summer:)

Nice half day hike on the Pouakai Tarns trail, and rewarded with spectacular views if the clouds are cooperating. Highly recommended.

The hike is too steep to do without fitness, but the view at the bottom was great. The cloud is unpredictable so we were very happy to see the mountain.

Stunning mountain. It’s always been inspiring. Started hike at 4 am a pleasant sunrise and the best weather to reach the summit. Shark tooth, the lizard, scurry field, the tower ❤️♥️
